Been going here for years and the food has always been solid. My favorite thing is the fries with cheese and gravy. Their onion rings with cheese and hotdogs (both plain and with toppings) are great as well. The food is made fresh and is savory. I think the plainest things on the menu are all of their burgers. For any of you who've followed me over the years, you know that I'm constantly in search of the perfect hot dog joint. A couple of my friends and I have traveled all over New Jersey looking for that perfect spot, and in our constant search we have yet to find a place that we all agree about. One of my friends decided that The Hot Grill was our next stop in our search for the perfect hot dogs. So we jumped in the car, headed towards Clifton, fought our way through a little traffic, and finally arrived. We hopped out of the car and our excitement was as palpable as the hunger pains we were feeling since none of us had eaten breakfast. We jumped in line as the aroma of the place overwhelmed us as we studied the menu a little. Damn this place smelled good. I always try to get the same thing at a hot dog place so I'm comparing apples to apples. So here I ordered a chili cheese dog, one hotdog all the way; which was chili onions and mustard. I also ordered a burger all the way, and chili cheese fries for all of us to share. The dogs here are either grilled or fried in oil it was hard to tell because I didn't get a plain one, but they were good-very good. The chili cheese dog had a nice snap to it and they didn't use cheese whiz they used a white cheese, probably American, that was melted on the dog and covered in a chili that was much sweeter than I'm used to on a hotdog. The hot dog and burger all the way was just as good with the raw onions and spicy brown mustard giving it a nice sharp flavor. I asked the counter guy what they used in their chili to sweeten it up he said he thought I was tasting the cinnamon they use. My one negative here was that the fries weren't so hot. Your normal pre-frozen fries, but they weren't cooked to a crispy enough texture for me and with the chili and cheese over-the-top of them they were pretty much a soggy mess. I would probably give this place 3 1/2 stars if I could, but I'll bump it up to four only because of all of the Mets memorabilia and pictures on the wall. If you come here at lunchtime be prepared to wait for a parking spot. The lot is really tight and apparently people who frequent this place don't understand that your car is supposed to go BETWEEN the lines. So we will continue our quest to find Jersey's best hot dog joint. The Hot Grille put forth a GREAT effort, but it wasn't perfection...I'm wondering if I'll ever find my Hot Dog Utopia. read more

I've had the hot dogs here before, but this review is strictly for the burgers. I got a few with the chili sauce and cheese. Although they are somewhat smaller than your average sized burger, it was very good. The chili sauce was pretty sweet, and it paired well with the cheese to make a great chili burger. Gotta admit they have some good juicy and filling dogs!!! Seems like a good dog with toppings can set you back $2-$3 greenbacks. I stopped in yesterday as I was running some errands in the area and needed a quick bite. The parking lot is big, so it's easy to pop in and pop out if needed. A lot of tips rave about the "all the way" but I'm stubborn and ordered 1 with onions ketchup and 2 with chili and sour kraut $8 total! Again the hot dog was simply juicy and flavorful. I would have preferred grilled onions, but they were nicely diced and raw. The chili was ok, not spicy as I hoped for so I didn't really get a spice and sour I was looking for with adding kraut. The buns were nice and in the end it all tied in together as a filling quick bite. I will def return to try the "all the way"! We are talking about good old comfort food. Burgers, dogs and fountain sodas. I grew up in the area and spent many late nights after going big at Hot Grill. The cheeseburgers are awesome, simply delicious. Cheese fries and gravy, a miracle "drug" ensuring no hang-over the next day. Chili dogs all the way, risky @ 2 am but fabulous after a ball game in the afternoon. This place is a landmark. An absolute must for any foodie. The service is classic, fast and loud! Pretty good hot dogs. If you like chili with your dogs this really is the place for you. Chili seasoned well, not spicy but still flavorful. I'm not a fan of thick-cut fries so I can leave the gravy and cheese fries out for next time, but they should satisfy those who like this variety. I really preferred the onion rings - they were absolutely delicious. Price is definitely right, and service is speedy, even if not the warmest. I like getting take-out because even just one minute in this restaurant has you coming out smelling like a greasy diner. Between this and Rutt's Hutt in the same town, I personally prefer Rutt's for its more diversified hot dog options (and it just tastes better in my opinion). But it's all subjective. I have continued my north jersey hot dog tour this week with a stop at an old classic, the Hot Grill. It's been a long time since I was here and a good chance some adult beverages were involved last time so thought I would try again. Very similar to Jersey Johnnies but I think they are an offshoot of hot grill. Hot grill is much bigger but the dogs all the way tasted exactly the same, same bun, same chili and onions. Slightly sweet so I don't love it but not terrible by any stretch. Ketchup was way better but the fries was a pretty small helping. Cash only joint but there is an atm there. Sauce not as good as McCobbs but this is an old school jersey favorite so worth a stop if you are in the area for sure. This is a hot dog joint, and one of the best around. I'm gonna say it's top 5, all jersey team. Been there many times over the last 20 years. I always get the same thing: One mustard and chili with raw onions, one with mustard and kraut. Add a side of french fries with gravy, and you couldn't ask for a better reason to go off your diet. My BF raved about this place and I was like "ok sure," me being the snotty New Yorker I am, I was like its nothing like Cliff Dogs. And yes it's not but it has it's own charm of a mom and pop shop that has being doing business for years. Something has to be said about those shops that have been in business for years. First off I'm not a huge hot dog fan but I do have my occasional cravings and this did sufficed my craving for a hot dog. I had "The Works" Dog which had onions, mustard and chili, it was ok, I really don't have chili on my hot dog, I guess I'm really plain with my condiments... Also had the french fries with gravy, when I heard gravy I was like hellz yea!! But I forgot I'm in the Northeast and gravy is not all created equal. In my mind gravy is one of two things, brown gravy such as your gravy smothered over pork chops, prime rib, mashed potatoes or anything to make it heavily. Then there's white gravy, a thick creamy goodness that dressed chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes or even the base for biscuits and gravy. This gravy was well... a cross between watered down brown gravy and maybe bits of their chili? I'm not sure... I didn't want my french fries swimming in that... sorry me thinks not. The service is fast, so don't worry if there is a long line or a crowd when you come in. I will say it seems like a place that would yell at you if you don't know what you want so step to the side, make a decision and then get in line. It's a bunch of barking orders to the kitchen so treat the experience as if your at the bar and you need to make the order quick! CASH ONLY!! And rightfully so, you can eat like a king under $20 don't make the place pay your credit card charge for laziness. Plus there's an ATM conveniently situated at the door. A family established restaurant, who's legacy is now carried by the family if it's founder. for a quick bite to eat with a nostalgic atmosphere u absolutely cannot go wrong by stopping in here... we live in a world where people reward others for having never done a thing. often we place our support for business and people who aren't deserving of any of it.. here is a local family owned restaurant that is still here two generations later and in a post covid world that's seen major franchises close their doors.. family owned operations tend to be able to devote more time to each of their customers. i met one of the owners here, and quite frankly, never been treated more graciously and kinder during a dinner outing... i look forward to another great dining experience next time im in jersey read more

During the week from 3-6 PM they have a buy one get one deal for hotdogs and hamburgers. I usually go for a cheeseburger all the way (sauce, onions, mustard) and it's by far the best cheeseburger I've had. Can't go wrong either the hot dogs either, but I'm particular to the burgers.
