Great place, friendly staff and very accommodating even if you don't have a reservation! Good atmosphere with cool setting and lighting.

My husband and I came here on a Saturday night. 5 stars for our meals and 4 for the environment! This place is great! Only complaint is how close we were seated to the kitchen which created a lot of traffic around our table. Other than that we really enjoyed our time! So-lots of great reviews for this place but I thought it was just okay. Service was quick and friendly. Restaurant was small and the admittedly overbooked reservations and our first table for our group of 5 was really only suitable for 4 ppl. We had to ask to be moved and there was some hesitation but we were moved to a slightly larger table. Appetizers were not the norm-which was good but they didn't bring any appetizer plates so hard to eat. Entree of short ribs was a huge portion but I found the meat flavorless. Others in my group had the burger -rave review for this one -and kids meal of chicken which looked good as well. Overall it was fine but I probably would not return. read more

First, may sound like pub by name but don't be deceived. Menu is not normal pub food, is interesting and notes gluten free selections; ambiance is modern, clean and attractive and there is a dog theme to the place.. First visit with our usual monthly dinner group and zero complaints among the five couples. We have some wine enthusiasts in the group and none were disappointed by choices available or the selections made. I had the Cajun Shrimp over pasta and it will be hard to return and not order the same thing as it was excellent. Service was attentive and the Chef stopped by for feedback. Quiet night so hard to tell noise level if the place is full. Television on a wall but not a distraction as it provides a continuous fireplace video. All in all, a very good choice and a welcome newcomer to Williamsburg. We intend to return. read more

Nice restaurant. Food was very good, service was nice. Wife and I shared four dishes: the beat salad, pear and blue cheese salad, fried shrimp and avocado, and duck. Portions were spot on and everything was well prepared and flavorful. We had the wine on tap (house white and Malbec) and enjoyed them both. Definitely return in the near future. read more

My husband and I went for dinner for the first time and fell in love! The atmosphere is inviting, cozy & creative. We loved all of the dog inspired art & touches on the restaurant. Service was perfect and our food was even better. We started with the Brussel sprouts, which I highly recommend, however it was so hard for us to only choose one appetizer! My husband got the burger & I the risotto... both excellent! (The whole menu was hard to choose!) We ended with a cheesecake, which from the first bite was amazing & evident it was made in house. We will definitely be back! It's a great spot for an evening dinner date or with a small group of friends. read more

The best place I've been to in a long time! For the first time ever, I had my burger done exactly how I like- well done- and most places don't like to do that. There was a crab stuffed tortellini and a street cooked corn, something like that, and they were phenomenal. The service was great. Very cute, fun restaurant. We are from Pennsylvania and were in town for a couple of days. Never been in the area before and was looking for a local, non-chain place to eat and hang out. We found it with the Hounds Tale. Awesome food, great drinks and our server, Crystal, was on top of everything. Highly, highly recommended. We will definitely be back next time we are in town. We visited on a Saturday evening without reservations, It was very busy so we sat at the bar, where we had excellent service. The menu looks amazing with a variety of choices, which I look forward to exploring on return visits. The pierogy appetizer was ample, tasty and well-presented. The entree was Mushroom Wellington, which although delicious, was smaller than the appetizer at more than twice the price. I am sure the pastry and wild mushrooms play into the pricing, but would suggest listing it as an appetizer since it was not enough food for an entree. I don't think this is typical as other diners had entrees of a usual size. read more

My review is mostly about the rudeness of the owner. For the majority of our meal we were happy: everyone's food was good and our waitress was amazing. But then, the owner came over. She asked if we were done, and we told her we were waiting on our dessert. She then asked us if we had reservations, and said that people that had reservations had been waiting for our table for 15 minutes and were angry. Mind you we had been seated right away before it got crowded, and also had been there only an hour. We had not been holding up the table for hours. We offered to go sit at the bar, (which in hindsight we shouldn't have had to) and she got even more flustered and said, "Well there aren't any seats there!" Wow. Our poor waitress was mortified about the owner's behavior. We have never eaten somewhere with poorer customer service. It doesn't matter that we didn't have reservations. You seated us. We were paying customers just like anyone else, reservations or not. What started off as a meal where we were planning our next visit turned into me writing this negative review and making sure we take our business elsewhere, as well as encouraging all our friends and family to do the same. read more

First, if you're an animal lover, then this is a can't miss. The decorations and ode to mans best friend throughout the restaurant is unmistakeable and part of the charm. They've gotten the details just right, even serving bar popcorn (which is yummy) in a dog bowl-- I promise it is better than I am making it sound. Secondly, The wine and beer menu is extensive and the food has all been excellent. The only reason I hesitate to give it five stars is that bc sometimes the service can be extremely slow-- no fault of the waiters but, on a crowded late night, the bar tender can fall behind quickly, especially with mixed drinks. Took almost 25 min to get a mixed drink on a weekend recently.... But definitely worth the wait. Outstanding and not stuff you find everywhere. If you're sticking to beer or wine when it's busy, this is significantly less of an issue! It's become one of my favorite happy hour spots and a favorite place to take guests visiting in the area. read more

Stopped here while vacationing, and despite it being July 4th and busy, the service was friendly and attentive. The dog theme and ambiance were cute and quirky. Amongst the four of us in our party we agreed that the common theme in the dishes was that there was just too much going on...rather than a harmonious depth of flavor, there was an onslaught of competing flavors. One in our group had the carrot ginger curry coconut soup, and by the third spoonful her throat was burning. We all tried it, but none found it palatable. I was excited to try the Parmesan Brussels sprouts--as they are a favorite of mine. I could have done without the white sauce on top, or the tomato sauce on the bottom--or preferably both--overall it masked the appeal of the Brussels which is the sweet nutty flavor and crispy layers of the veg. The skirt steak was a disappointing portion size for $22--more like a 4 oz tapas portion-- and again, between the chimchurri, and the potato shaved Brussels sprout hash and the strong lemon aioli it tasted both harsh and tasteless at the same time. A subtle rebalancing of flavors would go a long way here. read more

The food, service and atmosphere were superb! My husband and two kids came after a day touring Colonial Williamsburg based on Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is cozy and inviting. We came early with reservations on a Saturday night and were expected and seated immediately. Our waiter, Ray, was very helpful, knowledgable and present. We were surprised by the 'wine on tap' and asked about it, but weren't sure we wanted to go that way. Ray offered samples and we were very pleasantly surprised and ordered a the white blend and the Malbec. My husband and I ordered the poached pear salad to split and the duck and the scallops. The kids ordered the veg. risotto and the shrimp tempura and a side of sauteed spinach, as well as the spicy fries. So many different flavors on the table and every single thing was prepared to perfection. The salad was brought to us already split and it was a very generous portion. The scallop dish was not large but very flavorful. Ray was sure to tell us the portion sizes for everything in case we were very hungry or not too hungry. The duck breast was also a continental portion size but a little more filling. Also delicious. My daughter's risotto was very filling and she only ate half. My teenage son ate only half of his tempura (which was a starter) and half of his spinach. He loved it all, but was full. We were thrilled the kids were fully satisfied and we could devour the rest of their dishes. We all went away happy. Geri, the owner came over to process our check as the restaurant filled. She was super social and you can tell she loves her job, her people and is very proud of her chef and restaurant. I only wish we lived closer, it would be our go-to place. So much variety on the menu and so many different options such as homemade pasta and pierogies as well as beef tacos and rich vegetarian dishes. My food experience at Hound's Tale was very positive. For an appetizer my father and I split the fried brussel sprouts which were very tasty with a generous helping of the sauce on top. I also ordered one of the beers they has on tap. A local Aleworks brew that I have tried a few times before at the Hair of the Dog bottle shop. For our entrees we both got the burger which was very juicy and full of flavor. We really enjoyed the cheese mixture that they topped it with. This was my first time eating at the Hound's Tale since it opened and you can tell it is a newer restaurant. The service was fine, but nothing memorable. We got there a little after it opened so perhaps that is why things seemed a little frazzled. Overall the atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice. I am hoping to return soon perhaps during a busier hour to see if we receive better service so i can give this place the whole 5 stars! read more
