After finding parking in the residential area, we walked to the restaurant and got seated right away. Note for parking: there is a lot available for all the restaurants in the complex ($10/car) but it may be difficult to find parking here during peak meal times. If you're willing to walk a bit, park up the street near the apartments. We chose to seat at the bar and had a wonderful experience talking to our sushi chef and Tiger, the manager. We were told that our sushi chef was one of the best chefs from their Japan branches, and that was evident in all of the sushi we ordered. Every cut of fish was consistently thin and crafted with expertise. We ordered quite a spread (spicy tuna crispy rice, albacore with crispy onion, eel nigiri, sweet shrimp nigiri, agedashi tofu, wild cod nigiri, etc.), and every dish was on point. The fish quality is unlike anything I've ever had before. In fact, Tiger told us the tuna is brought in from Japan. I had an amazing experience at Sushi Zanmai in Los Angeles for a special omakase night hosted by Kiyoshi Kimura also known as the "Tuna King". This was actually my second time meeting him, which made the evening even more memorable. The menu was thoughtfully paced and beautifully executed. We started with a refreshing welcome drink featuring orange and plum wine from Wakayama, followed by a light and flavorful cold shabu shabu with red snapper and rock shrimp in a creamy spicy sauce. The tuna trio and sashimi were incredibly fresh and paired perfectly with their signature sweet soy. I wasn't super hungry today, so I just ordered a chirashi don and a cucumber salad. The don was really good, the fish was very fresh with no fishy smell at all. A bit disappointed by Sushi Zanmai, but happy I visited. We decided to stop in here after hearing news that this Japan-based restaurant chain broke the world record by paying ~510M JPY (~$3.24 million USD) for a single bluefin tuna at this year's annual New Year auction at Tokyo's Toyosu Market (which is the largest wholesale fish market in the world). With their recently opened Los Angeles location serving up limited pieces of it, I was pretty excited to have an opportunity to get a taste of sushi history. For those that don't know, Sushi Zanmai operates about 50 restaurants throughout Japan. Los Angeles is its first overseas location. Often referred to as the "Tuna King" of Japan, CEO Kiyoshi Kimura is often the highest bidder at the Japanese new year tuna auction. This comes with a lot of publicity that helps the business. To eat, we each ordered a couple pieces of the coveted "Hatsuseri" tuna. In addition, I ordered some Otoro, Chutoro, and Red Snapper. Overall, I thought the sushi was pretty good. This definitely isn't a high-end sushi bar with the highest quality, but the prices are reflective of that and very reasonable. While I enjoyed the special "Hatsuseri" tuna, the red snapper and chutoro admittedly weren't the best. The chutoro was particularly chewy and I had to spit some of it out. Food aside, service was pretty nice and the ambiance was lively. They don't serve alcohol yet, but they have plenty of food options sure to satisfy. I came here as part of a Koreatown food hop during lunch on a Tuesday. Sushi Zanmai was my first stop. We still made a reservation on Yelp just in case we needed it. The restaurant was pretty quiet and empty on a Tuesday at noon. We sat at the bar and no matter where you sit, you order your food off a tablet. Nigiri is sold by the single piece, and the prices are amazing. As part of the grand opening special, a piece of chutoro nigiri is $3.98 and the quality was amazing. The special for the month is uni/sea urchin and one piece is $8.98 and a unidon was about $45. We only ordered nigiri, and everything was fantastic except for the toro negi gunkanmaki. The minced fish in it was really, really fishy in taste, and it took a lot of ginger to get the taste out of my mouth. Our Japanese sushi master and the entire wait staff are incredibly hospitable. At the bar, your nigiri is served to you as it becomes ready. The sushi master spoke enough English to guide us on how to best enjoy the pieces that didn't need soy sauce or the uni was to be eaten after touching it to some salt. He also asked if we wanted the rice in the nigiri to be big, regular or small in size. Regular was perfect for me but my friend started leaving behind half of the rice toward the end of our meal. I ate the nigiri with my fingers so could feel the rice was just slightly warm and melts away in your mouth. The size of the fish is cut thinner but longer than at a spot like Sushi Gen but it's fair given the price and didn't compromise on the enjoyment of the delicious fish. The menu does have cooked dishes, meal sets, desserts and other goodies I'll have to sample on a second visit. Chapman Plaza where Sushi Zanmai is located offers $4 parking, and there are street meters out front that cost $1.50/hour. In case you're curious about the next stop of my food hop, it was to Hangari Kalguksu across the street for some noodle soup but sadly, they close on Tuesdays (boo) so I got back in my meter-parked car and drove to a food court. This location is in the heart of downtown Koreatown, so parking will always be a challenge. We made a reservation online for 6pm on Saturday and were seated right away when we arrived. We ordered from a tablet and everything came out fresh and delicious. Parking: Parking is $20 at their plaza or the nearby structures. If you're extremely lucky on weekends, you might find a metered spot on the street. Service: Amazing. Our server explained how to use the tablet and shared recommendations. Our food came out quickly and they checked on us often, very attentive. The oyster was fresh and briny while the tuna was buttery, so tasty I ordered another 3-piece tuna set, complemented with a salmon set. The fish was high-quality and nicely priced. The menu has many options, and I finished the meal with a water jelly mochi. Yum! There is metered street parking along Sixth and nearby streets, as well as a paid lot in Chapman Plaza. Enter through the door from the lot and you are greeted by a smiling statue with open arms. We walked past the statue of Kiyoshi Kimura. That's as close to him as I'll probably ever get! I missed coming here for the Grand Opening where he cut into a sizeable tuna! The interior is sleek & casual. There are large schools of tuna murals. We sat along the wall away from the sushi counter. I could still watch the sushi chefs working. There are servers, but they don't take your order. They will answer your questions and bring you what you need. You order using the iPad on your table. It's pretty simple to use and complete with pictures. We ordered: Tuna Nigiri Medium Fatty Tuna Nigiri Fatty Tuna Nigiri Uni Nigiri Yellowtail Belly Nigiri Tsukiji Roll Seafood Tempura Everything was done right. They usually come in pairs & quality was not good at all. Salmon 3pc didn't taste fresh, crispy rice had no flavor, dragon roll had too much rice & avocado on it which made the texture mushy with no taste. The toro set was a 7/10, the only good thing on there was the less fatty tuna. Still not worth the money tho, you're better off going to AYCE sushi. LASTLY! I used to love Sushi Zenmai when I was in Japan so when I heard they opened a location in LA I had to go try it. The tuna here is honestly incredible. So fresh, fatty, and full of flavor. We got the tuna set and it was perfect because you get to try some of their most popular items all in one go. Every single piece was high quality and melted in your mouth. The service was beyond amazing. Everyone was so kind and helpful. They took the time to explain the menu and even gave recommendations. You order everything on a tablet which makes it super easy and efficient, and the food comes out really fast. They don't have their liquor license yet but it's coming soon. Parking is valet, though if you get lucky you might be able to find street parking nearby. Overall, I loved it. It reminded me so much of the experience I had in Japan. The quality, the presentation, and even the vibe were all on point. I'll definitely be back once they start serving sake. read more

Great ambiance, fast service, and prices were decent. Loved the quality of the food. Crispy rice appetizers were delicious. Loved the crispiness and flavor. Fried soft shell crab is my favorite. Crispy, textured, and airy. The tuna nigiri tasted super fresh and delicious. Chicken kaarage was also executed perfectly. We order on the iPad and the food came out pretty fast! This place was recommended to us by a foodie friend. It did NOT disappoint. The service was outstanding! Yes, it is slightly higher priced, but the quality is great. We have been here twice in two weeks. We chose to sit at the bar the first time and the sushi Chef Minoru was very friendly and attentive. He suggested several items and best way to eat our food selections. We returned for my boyfriend's birthday and they recognized us, greeted us by our favorite food choice and ensured we placed our order in before it sold out. Saw this Sushi place, branch from Tsukiji Tokyo and eager to try. The experience itself is different. Japanese style dining from Tokyo. They offer some recommendation of certain sushi. Of course their specialties are Maguro/Tuna. So we did order the set to try. They have some promo to lower the price point. Sushi was fresh and good. The price is on higher end. They only bring one set of ginger and wasabi for table of 4, why? We asked for one each. Like some review mentioned you can get high quality sushi at better price points in LA. So many competition here. Service was fast and line is long. You either come early at the opening, make reservation and wait 45-60 minutes from our experiences. read more
