the best thing was the server and the music (except when the waitress that let out screeching whistles for the musician who was very good. they serve a flavored iced tea which was subpar. The food was cold, the salad bar was lacking things like tomatoes, cucumber, mushrooms or green peppers (basically anything besides iceberg lettuce and spinach). the food was under cooked. the meatballs were still frozen in the middle and it took forever for the cook(s) to get it out and then it was MAYBE luke warm. This is a great place with a good variety of items on the menu. Great service by the waitstaff. Keep an eye out for the owner, Scott Waddle...he's the guy in the cowboy hat You'll see him chatting with customers, bussing tables, running drinks, and making sure that everyone is taken care of. My fiancée and I are visiting from Tucson, and we loved it! The restaurant had a great western-esque, and was very cozy. The server was very friendly and attentive But most importantly, the food was great! I had the Fish Tacos (beer battered cod) and my fiancée had the Salmon. I ordered the Fish Tacos. Perfect cod with avocado and tomatoes, purple cabbage, and delicious crema! Best on the mountain! Our server was fast and observant . It was like he had skates on. Very professional. We sat in the bar area and enjoyed watching everything. Beautiful bar. Scott Waddell stopped to check on how dinner was. Stopped in while in Show Low on a Girl's Trip for my birthday and WOW!!! I really enjoyed the atmosphere, friendly staff, and the rib eye Medium Rare was so tender and juicy. Ok ok ok. We have been looking for our "diamond in the rough" for 2 years (we come for rodeo). This.is.it. the Buffalo bite appetizer was amazing. The margs? *chefs kiss*. We eat there on 10/5/2024. It was Saturday night. The special for tonight was prime rib. I got the 16oz with a baked potato, mac & cheese and side salad. It was all very delicious. I found the 16 ounce to be a little bit more than I can handle so I brought the rest of it home. I would definitely recommend this place. Our service was excellent. If you are looking for a QUALITY chicken fried steak go no place else in Show Low than the hungry buffalo. They do it right. Starting with real steak they pound it out, then double coat it, then fry it to a golden brown. I have tried other places in show low and all I have gotten are frozen products that are passed off as quality and they are pathetic especially when compared to the time and effort the HB puts in to their product. Try it, you wont be disappointed. Only thing that would make the meal better is if they had fresh cut fries. Service was excellent, including the owner coming by several times to check on us. This was not the worst but also not the best place I've ever been. We were here with a group for a birthday celebration. The atmosphere was nice with a ranch house style with wooden beams and buffalo sculptures. Service was hit and miss. It started great but turned fast. We ordered waters and calamari strips for an appetizer for $12. The calamari had a good crust though different from what I've usually had. It came out as a huge order making it worth the price. I did have to get up to get the attention of our server, who was in the back folding napkins (it appeared) and chatting with another server, to order wines. the seared scallops ($22) and scampi ($17). The menu said the scallops were seared but when we got them they came out in a plate of juice with tomatoes. My husband even double checked that they were seared when he ordered so why would they take a beautifully seared scallop and plop it in some buttery tomato sauce? We mentioned it to our server who replied " That's how we serve them in this restaurant." The servers reply took me by surprise as you should never argue with a customer. Well, if that's how they serve them, they need to put that in the menu. My order: Both the scampi and the side of broccolini were cold. They took them back and seconds later brought them back warm-must have used a microwave to reheat them. I even clarified when I ordered was in butter and garlic with lemon but the sauce had no garlic or seasoning of any kind. We asked for lemons so we doctored it up with salt, pepper and lemons. Others orders: A friend had the chicken fried steak who said it was good but it wasn't really hot either. The gravy was even already sheened over from the fat cooling. Someone else had the Ruben which was good and another said the steak was good also. The Hungry Buffalo is out of the way for us. I wouldn't make the drive to try it again although, I'm sure some menu items would be better than what we had. I wouldn't return to a place that I rated 3 stars and had to make the drive from town. read more

We have been dining here for years!! There have been a LOT of changes over the years. Typically, we have a great experience, occasionally it is just good, not necessarily great. But, hey, good is good enough and great is even better!! We really like the burnt ends and we ordered (for the first time) brussel sprouts. WOW!!! Their brussel spouts are the VERY BEST we have ever tasted!!! They were big, cooked to perfection and had amazing flavor!! We also like the jacked up mac and cheese that has burnt ends, jalapenos, mushrooms and scallions, maybe more that I am missing! It is very TASTY!! We order it almost every single time, even if we order it to go because we order dinners too!! The owners are VERY conscientious about pleasing their customers!! I felt bad because I thought the mushrooms in my mac and cheese were not as I remembered them. I like them grilled, but they were not. My bad, I looked back at a picture and they aren't necessarily grilled, but they are flavorful if you mix them in with the tasty mac and cheese!! A very major favorite of mine, for sure!! The owner responded with true care and concern!! The husband and wife team care above and beyond about the food AND your experience!!! I am loyal to Hungry Buffalo from the time they opened fast forward to now!! The atmosphere is AMAZING and enjoyable!! The place is HUGE, unlike some other options in the Show Low area. We have tried a HUGE variety of menu options and we always love the food and the experience!! They do have a super good Reuben as others have mentioned. They offer steaks and prime rib and more!! I LOVE that they have a LOT of side options at no extra charge (last time I noticed...I typically just order off of memory by now!!!)!! We LOVE this place and our 11 year old kid does too!! He always requests going to Hungry Buffalo when we mention we are going out to eat!! He has good taste and we value his opinion, so we are happy to oblige him!! ALL restaurant owners are having very difficult times right now. From turnovers of employees and cooks, to employees not showing up OR not even applying, they are struggling and we all need to show them our support and love!! My first time in Show Low town, and I looked for restaurants near the hotel, and this one was 13 minutes away, I recommend that you check the times and better if you make a reservation, we called but we couldn't make a reservation, we went without a reservation and they put us in the waiting room for about 3-5 minutes, not bad at all. They gave us complimentary warm bread with butter and cinnamon! I just love it! The service was excellent (I can't remember the waitress's name sorry) but she was amazing! She recommended Burning Wagon, the first time I tried it and I was so good! my boyfriend ordered Ribeye with potato and onion rings,and the taste was just excellent! We were so full that we couldn't try the desserts, I loved the place, the atmosphere, the decoration, the service, if I'm back in town I will definitely go back to this restaurant. read more

We went to The Hungry Buffalo on a recommendation from the Show Low Chamber of Commerce and we're glad we stopped! Absolutely LOVE the decor - very western, very clean and comfortable. We were there for lunch on a weekday so it wasn't busy which allowed us time to take the whole place in, enjoy a drink and some good food but mostly to enjoy the company of our amazing server, Sara. We tried the jalapeno poppers and then split a plate of mac n cheese, burnt ends and a twice baked potato. The poppers were really good and on the spicy side, just the way I like 'em. My husband loved the mac n cheese (I'm not a connoisseur and could care less about mac n cheese) - said it was creamy and super cheesy. The twice baked potato was nothing special as it was more like a loaded baked potato....still good, but nothing special. I have to say that while the burnt ends TASTED good and we were served a plentiful amount of cubed ends, I was disappointed that there was absolutely no char to them. It was more like cubed brisket instead of burnt ends. We ordered them with BBQ sauce but when Sara mentioned they can be served with chimichurri, that's what I really wanted. She was nice enough to give me a small bit of chimichurri to dip some of the ends in and it was delicious! The bar area is sports themed with various football helmets and flags adorning the walls. We spent a week tent camping near Show Low earlier this month. On our last day we went into town for dinner. The Hungry Buffalo was superb in service and food. The waitress was busy but she still managed to take our order within 5 minutes of arrival. The food was great tasting and we will go back again soon. read more

The meal tonight was PERFECT! We were seated on the patio per our request. Stephanie was our server. The patio and table was clean (may sound odd but during Covid-19 it was noticed.). The beer was nice and cold. She offered us appetizers and suggested the jalapeño poppers. They were very good. The calamari was crisp and hot the accompanying sauce was tasty not bland. She paced the meal perfectly. The steaks were perfectly cooked with a nice char on the outside. All meals came at the same time and were correct. We were offered dessert and I HIGHLY recommend the Bourbon Pecan Pie with Ice Cream and a great drizzle. I gave this 5 stars not only because of the extreme improvements but also the fantastic service, welcoming hostess and atmosphere. Will come back again. I've never heard of this place and honestly, it was off the main road up to St Johns, so I never would have seen it. So glad we went though! The locals know where the good food is! I ordered a Mac N Cheese dish that comes with some "burnt ends" on the top, jalapenos, a creamy sauce.... I have never had a better Mac N Cheese. I'm also lactose intolerant so Mac N Cheese is a gamble, but I saw the people across the way order this and I knew I had to have it. Melt in your mouth amazingness! This was are first time here so we didn't know they opened at 4pm we got there maybe 5 minutes before so we decided to wait. I went in for dinner last night and waited 40 minutes for table. It was sooo busy. When I finally got seated it took seriously around 55 minutes for my food. At this point there was probably only 7 tables in the restaurant. So service was good and food was good but with already waiting 45 minutes for a table and another 55 minutes for my food was a little disappointed. I felt like they started cutting the kitchen staff around 8pm and kind of forgot about us. The owner is a super cool guy and was checking on tables and talking with people. read more

If I could give this place zero stars after tonight I would. We had reservations and arrived 25 min early the hostess was able to seat us as they weren't too crazy. This is where everything went downhill. Our server Ryan was managing two very large party's and never should have been given our table we arrived at 5:38 it was probably about 20-25 for him to come and take our order. That we were ok and understanding about. What really set us off was 5-6 other tables who came in 40 min or more after us had their orders taken and came out ate and left. I asked how long it would be since my little boy started crying he was so hungry. It was a long road trip and we are now over an 1.5 sitting here. The more and more we sat around and watched the angrier everyone in our group became. I finally asked Ryan to get the manager he refused and just said they would take care of us. After 7 pm with two starving children we had to leave so I got up and said this is completely unacceptable! We've been here for over an 1.5 now! He just wanted to argue with us about leaving and that they had forgotten our order he even went to grab the tickets to try and say no but then put them back after realizing their mistake ? It's a shame this was one of our favorite places to visit and have several guests coming up and we had two more dinners planned here this week. The Hungry Buffalo has become one of our favorite places to dine whenever we visit the White Mountains! The food and drinks have always been absolutely great. The local owners make it their commitment to giving their patrons the best dining experience. Our server, Jason was excellent! His recommendation for the Kansas City Bone-in New York Strip was one of the best steaks I've had in a long time. I found out that their beef was actually from a ranch near Kansas City.
