We found this restaurant through a search after an intended restaurant was too crowded. It was Saturday evening, and all the restaurants were very busy. We were told there would be a 15 - to 20-minute wait. However, the hostess was working extremely fast to seat those waiting. We were seated within 10 minutes. Recommend reservations. Our waitress, Grace, quickly greeted us and took our drink orders. A few seconds later, a young man brought bread and honey butter. We both opted for the prime rib. We were amazed how quickly the waitresses, servers, and busboys moved. Orders were quickly coming out of the kitchen. Scott, the owner, even greeted people at their tables. The food was excellent and well prepared. Grace checked on us throughout our meal and kept our glasses full. The Mac and cheese was outstanding. Though they were busy and crowded, it was easy to have a conversation without raising your voice. Let me start by saying our waiter was AMAZING! The food was not impressive. If you like smoke flavored everything then this is your place. If not, head the other direction. Couldn't get a reservation until 8 then they proceeded to tell us their special (prime rib) was gone. The woman who seated us seemed to try to talk us out of eating there because the kitchen was behind on all orders. Things ordered at our table: Beef stroganoff: no flavor other than smoke, weird texture Mac&cheese with burnt tips: Smokey, no cheese flavor. Filet mignon: over cooked. Such a find! Went here on Saturday and the place is gorgeous and FUN!! Full on steakhouse with the owner Scott in attendance and touching every table. On a Saturday at the end of April we waited about 20 minutes for a table, that is nothing! Communication from the staff was excellent! We had the fried pickles to start with house made ranch and chipotle mayo, savory and tart! The pickles are tangy and more like tempura fried, which is not what we are used to but stayed crisp and delicious the whole meal. The bread, for us, was a throw away.. It came as a loaf with honey butter which was very, very sweet and the bread, while crunchy on the outside and a smoky flavor like it was cooked in the same oven as meat was smoked wasn't our favorite part of the meal. The Prime Rib was, frankly, AMAZING! No other words. It was melt in the mouth tender, smoky, rare and delicious. The Au Jus was beefy and savory but not too salty, exactly what you would hope for. The horseradish sauce is what I always knew as a child when it was homemade..... sharp, tangy goodness to place on the meat and clear your sinuses! It was awesome!!! And the burning wagon wheel I got?! Amazing! Fusilli pasta (spirals) absolutely sopping and dripping with homemade cheese sauce, sautéed jalepenos, sautéed mushrooms, and beefy burnt ends in a delicious BBQ sauce and green onions and bacon....I know, WHAT?! ALL OF THAT? Yes!!!! All of this plus the portions are HUGE! It fed us the whole weekend. And the price tag? Bread, appetizer, 2 sodas, 2 huge entrees for $58.00 before tip. Sooo well worth it! The staff was so very kind. Misty was our server and although she said she'd only been there one month she was incredible! It was our sadness that we could not stuff in a dessert. Going back next weekend to try the Tomahwak steak (highly recommended by Scott) and the butter cake and burboun pecan pie with ice cream!!!! This is a meal that delivers different things than what you expect. We kept tasting things that are typical at most steakhouses and thinking "do I like this? It's so different!" Headed up mountain to check on the cabin. Needed a good lunch. The normal place we go to was closed till 4pm. Boy are we glad they were!!!! Have not been to the Hungry Buffalo since they only opened 6 weeks ago. Ended up sitting next to the owner "Scott". He had the kitchen make a special order of cornbread and chili. AMAZING STUFF! Visiting family here in Pinetop they took us to the Hungry Buffalo. The restaurant was bought several years ago by the new owner, who's name is Scott. He has really fixed up the place. It has a rugged Wild West themed decor fits that fits in with the area's history so well. The antique bar in the first room you enter was brought in from Prescott Arizona and a must see. It's beautiful. There are 2 indoor dining rooms and an outside dining patio perfect for those beautiful Arizona sky evenings. I hear they also have music on the weekends. FOOD; Scrumdillyumptious!!! Seriously my Rib Eye Steak was cooked to perfection and had such great flavor that it did not need any steak sauce. Love a steak like that!!! The beef is local, so hurray for supporting your community! We also had 3 appetizers, loaded potato skins, calamari and the spinach dip with chips. All 3 were yummy. The salads were crisp and fresh. My hubs had Chicken Fried Beef Steak which he said was the best he'd ever had in his life, so I had to have a big bite. Holy cow he was peg on, the quality of the beef steak was excellent!! Tender and not string grisly parts and cut with a fork. Mashed red skinned potatoes we fresh, flavorful and homemade. Our comfort meal hit the spot for our hungry bellies!!! SERVICE; our server was fantastic!!! I can't remember her name but let me tell you this girl was on it. Drinks, appetizers and meal came to us promptly and hot. BRAVO!!! And y'all know I love hot food, never warm. I want to also mention Mr Scott. I notice that this congenial smiling man went to every table and spent time talking to them. I also noticed that he also gets in there and helps his staff, which let me tell you says a lot about a man and a business owner. This man is invested in his community and he genuinely cares! I went in to order takeout, the layout is a little weird but easy enough to figure out. What I mean by that is there are two entrances but the northern entrance (dining area) does not have hostess' so you have then walk through the bar area to see them to be seated. Not a big deal if you know that going in. Or just enter on the south side. The two girls working today were super nice and very helpful. Order was ready in a reasonable time. The only complaint is the menu was not very clear on the Slider of the week, which implies one slider, but is actually two. That was fair for the price but could have had the kids split on order instead of getting each their own. Plenty of food and could very well split meals or have left overs. This place was formerly the Porter Mountain Steakhouse so it has all the informal ambiance of the old West Menu is varied and unique and portions are large which justified the slightly higher than average prices. Well, we have eaten here before and have enjoyed our meal, but sadly, Wednesday night was a disappointment. We should have known better than to order beef during this time of O'Biden's great inflation as he tries to lead our country down the path to socialism, but when we heard the special was t-bone steak, we couldn't resist. Darn!! Hubby and i both ordered the t-bone (med rare) with fries and splurged an extra $6 for a side salad. Salad and bread were promptly brought to the table and we started to enjoy a leisurely meal. Nope that didn't work. Before we had eaten half our salads, the waitress brought our steak and fries. So, we had to leave the salad and eat meat before it got cold. Fries were delicious but the steak was 1/4" thick and cooked well-done. As thin as it was, the only way it could have been med-rare is if they just waved it over the flames. Sad to say but the meat was totally tasteless and about a third of the way through eating, the pieces of fat had cooled to that bright white color of cold fat. Until this government gets control of inflation, I don't think the common people are going to get a decent steak anywhere. Sad that this is going to hurt our local non- chain businesses. read more

Great food, great service, and fun western atmosphere. We were in Lakeside for two weeks and after we ate here once, we came back 4 more times. First the food is great. The best prime rib I have ever had (big statement for me) and available on Saturday only. All the steaks we had were flavored so good, and smoked just right. The jalapeño poppers are homemade and fantastic. We did the fish fry on Friday night, they had flakey big chunks of cod. The owner and his wife gave us a tour, the wait staff is awesome and so nice, and service is quick. It is worth going a little out of the way. I eat at expensive steak houses frequently and would take a steak from here over those $100 a plate places any day. Must go once and you will be back. We loved this place! First time visitors... My husband and I were excited to find The Hungry Buffalo steakhouse since we had not been there in all the years we visited the Show Low/Pinetop area. This restaurant was off the main highway which we loved. The atmosphere was great (we were seated in the bar area and enjoyed watching sports on the tv's). We arrived just after 4pm so it was fairly quiet at that time. The staff was friendly. The menu had something for everyone in terms of main entrees. Although we personally had our heart set on prime rib. The prime rib was good size, but had absolutely NO flavor and was PALE. We don't think they used any seasoning at all. For the restaurant itself, the drinks and friendly and attentive service, it's a four out of 5, but we were so disappointed in the prime rib that we gave it 3 stars. Also, when we looked at the dessert offerings online, it showed mud pie, yet when we asked what desserts they were offering, mud pie was not an option. We suggest you read the reviews and make your own decision about trying this place for dinner but, unfortunately, we cannot recommend their prime rib. read more

After years of visiting my Husband and I finally made the jump and moved to Show Low from Tucson. Every time we visited we meant to try Hungry Buffalo, but never got the chance. Well, it FINALLY happened. I am a steak and potatoes girl through and through. My Husband, not so much he would prefer a burger. Weird, I know. Anywho. We visited this establishment during the week, so it was a fairly slow night in the restaurant. If you plan to go on the weekend you must make reservations. I had my parents in town to visit this past weekend and since my Husband and I had raved so much about our visit there, they wanted to try it out on Saturday. We arrived around 730 and the place was packed. It was an hour to an hour and a half wait without reservations. Alas we had to sit other options(and learned our lesson). On our initial visit we I ordered the NY Strip and my Husband ordered the ribs. He wouldn't stop raving about them so I tried a bite. OH MY GOSH. These ribs are LIFE changing, I am not kidding. Like, I don't ever want to make ribs again they're that good. Don't get me wrong my steak was excellent. However, these ribs converted me (for this particular restaurant only mind you). The drinks, service, food and ambiance have made us lifetime patrons. My mouth is watering thinking about the ribs right now, can't wait to go back! read more
