I had the clam chowder and it was pretty good! My husband had a burger and he said he wished he had gotten the chowder but it was still good. Easy to see why they won the The Peoples Choice Award for four years as best seafood in Curry County. We were staying at Harris Beach State Park in May 2017. We ate at the Hungry Clam over and over trying every seafood they offered. All priced right, fresh, very well prepared and served, fast very friendly service, clean (including restroom) and easy parking and access. We'd suggest the Clam Chowder Bowl in sourdough or the combo platter of oysters, shrimp, clam strips, calimari strips, fish and fries, or the fantastic scallops, or the fish and chips or halibut and chips. It was,all good as was the fresh brewed ice tea. There is a great selection of other beverages too. We will be back next year. read more

So first off I'd like to say the food was great and the chefs did a great job, but the service from the cashier and the other girl with grey hair and braids was terrible. I came into the restaurant and ordered 3 clam chowder bread bowls and after I paid the cashier asked me where I was going to be sitting. I told her, "the bench outside to the right." She responded with, ok I'll find you." 25 minutes later I come back inside to find cold food sitting on a table with flies on it. The cashier said she couldn't find me even tho I was 15 feet from the door where I said I was going to be. Also, the soup was in plastic bowls instead of bread bowls. So I nicely went to ask them if they could fix it for me and they just replied with telling me I was wrong and I ordered plastic bowls instead of fixing the problem. They weren't concerned at all that I was unhappy with the bowls and when I said "never mind I guess I'll be unhappy" the girl with the grey hair just responded with "ok bye." I work in a restaurant and I would never treat anyone this way. They have no concern for customer happiness. Very disappointed. read more

Every trip to Brookings we look forward to the Amazing Halibut fish and chips, So when we were they this last Memorial Day weekend we have our hearts set on them. I place our usual order but this time to go. We received our order and took off down the coast line to find a place to sit and enjoy our mouth watering fish and chips we were so looking forward too. The clam chowder here is great, best I ever had I think. My husband and i like to visit here everytime we are in town. We get a bowl of clam chowder and a 4 piece fish and chips. After waiting 45 minutes in line and an additional hour after ordering, we finally received our food. We noticed there was favoritism because the lady taking orders was switching tickets around so people weren't getting their food in the right order. I went there for my 56th birthday and I was well pleased! It doesn't look like much walking up to, but the food and service were great. The clam chowder was the best and I really like the garlic battered sea food dipped in their seafood sauce, just a touch of horse radish. Typical coastal (shore) restaurant - very informal; outside seating (and inside); no atmosphere (other than the fact you're a few hundred yards away from the ocean!), but EXCELLENT food at a VERY fair price. In town for fishing trip and wanted seafood for dinner. Buddy checked yelp for something close to harbor and found this dump or pizza right next door. Decided on this place and pizza for lunch next day big mistake. Food was horrible and the dining room was teaming with flies. Had to keep swatting them away from food and landing on me. As for the food I tried the "home made" chowder and it was from a can no doubt. No potatoes, no celery jus a few clam pieces and parsley. 2 of use tried the special which was shrimp ceviche tostadas. I've had better off the lunch coaches by my office in Oakland. No flavor, bland with what tasted like frozen salad shrimp. The portion was embarrassingly small maybe 10-12 shrimp on a 5" tostada and you got 2. My other friend tried the shrimp and crab melt which look good when delivered. He said one side had no flavor what so ever and the other half was salted to death. Never seen anyone put ketchup on sandwich before but that was the only way he could get it down. The flies where real bad, and just topped off the experience. They even had a fly light in dining room about 4ft off ground next to table to try to help. Might have worked if someone would have bothered to change the glue board inside. It was covered in dust and old dead flies, yum. We ended up at pizza next door to get a slice and a few pies for the next days lunch. read more

We were traveling through Oregon and I was craving clam chowder. I asked a clerk at a store where to go and she suggested The Hungry Clam. What a pleasant surprise! There was room for us inside but there are a lot more tables/seating available outside. The chowder was wonderful... thick and tasty. My husband had fish & chips which was also very good. Reciently moved to brookings from So. Cal. I went to Yelp to get info on my new home and read some bad reviews about the Hungry Clam. I didn't go there for three weeks into my exploration of Brookings restaurants. BIG MISTAKE! By far, The Hungry Clam had the best clam chowder in Southern Oregon. Not a fancy steak house, just a very good fish-n-chips kind of place with excellent food. I go there once or twice a week for a bread bowl of chowder, or the great fish & chips. read more

My husband and I were in Brookings for a few days and someone recommended the Hungry clam and we decided to give it a try. The line was long but the staff was all over it. They were very friendly and fast. We had a bowl of clam chowder and it was the best I have had. It was so good we went back the next day for another bowl. We also tried the grilled crab and shrimp sandwich. You really can not go wrong at this small but awesome diner. If I am in Brookings again I will be at The Hungry Clam for lunch again.. read more

The food was good; the service was terrible. My boyfriend and I decided to stop here before heading back home after a day on the beach and he had loved it the last time he went. Firstly, they were out of several things, which I realize is not the staff's fault, however when I went to order some basic chicken strips, which were not on the original list of things told to us as being out, I was informed then that "shoot, those are out too." Ok. Fine. I found the bacon cheeseburger and fries on the menu and ordered those. My boyfriend got the fish tacos. Since this is a smaller establishment, a lot of things were serve yourself; there was ranch out on the counter and I attempted to self-serve a side dish and then was yelled at by the server for touching HER area. I apologized and was visibly upset. She then brought my burger to me and stated that the cook knew he had made an error by putting tomato on my burger (I asked for it without) as she was taking it out as she put my meal down in front of me at the table. Not usually a big deal at all for me, I can just take them off (I just try not to waste food!), but the fact that she had already berated me for her mistake of leaving server-only items out on the public counter space with other self-service items and then knowingly brought my food out to me incorrectly was too much. Very disappointing since the rest of the day was so lovely and I was nothing but pleasant to this woman and tipped well at the counter. After reading the other reviews we thought we need to try this place. Two of us ate and we both had the fish and chips and the zucchini sticks. We were going to try the crab sliders, but when we asked about them we were told they were crab cakes deep fried and served on a bun. I prefer to not have my crab cakes deep fried coming from the SF bay area! The zucchini sticks were the same as any other place, frozen then deep fried. The fish was decent with a light batter and good large chunks of cod. The fries were like cardboard. The frozen wavy fries that were overcooked and sprinkled with seasoned salt to try to cover the flavor....or lack there of. You are also served a side of coleslaw that KFC does a better job of making as the cabbage as chewy and bitter. The burgers looked good, but we were not in the mood to try the place again and when we come back to Brookings we won't be eating here again as sandwiches from Rays is a much better lunch choice. read more

There have been a variety of reviews for 'The Hungry Clam'. At first we decided not to go but when you read the reviews we decided to give it a try. So 3-Stars for Yelp means A-Ok. The Hungry Clam was okay for it's price and the food was good. You may as well throw out the French Fries from the get-go, they look good but once you bite into it the French Fry is mussy and not even ketchup helps. Our granddaughter's Hamburger was over cooked but she thought it was good and ate the hole thing but not the french fries. My wife had the Fried Fish and Chips. The fish was excellent, cooked perfectly and tender but she didn't eat the fries. I had the fried oysters and fries. They gave me a ton of oyster and they were fried perfectly and tender but guess what I didn't eat, right the French Fries. I also had a bowl of clam chowder, it was thick, tasty, and the clams were so tender. I enjoyed it but it wasn't the best I've had. The restaurant was small and very busy. The cook and the waitress were very nice. I would say, "Give it a try and you won't break the bank". It's okay, we liked it except for only the fries, and it fit our budget. read more
