First off, let me say that the food is delicious. My only critiques would be, the BBQ is that its slightly over-smoked. Ive been here a couple times and this seems to be the case. This is NOT a deal breaker and the sauces and sides are very good. THE EGG ROLLS are out of this world! I could eat 10! That being said, things are a little pricey for BBQ. Nothing crazy, but not a hole in the wall for sure. The atmosphere and decor are nice. This is a more upscale model bbq restaurant you can take a whole family. It can get busy so make sure you get there early because there might be a wait. Anytime I am visiting family in Ft Mill, I consider The Improper Pig. We were visiting the area and we went to "the happening place in town". The bartender Bridgett was great and very efficient despite the fact that she was the only bartender for the entire restaurant. The food was good although I've been to better BBQ places. I love the pork rinds, twice baked jalapeños which we had for appetizers. Then we all ordered our entree. The brisket sandwich with chips, chicken salad sandwich with collard greens, Fort Mill platter with chicken and beef, grits, hush puppies and green beans, and the Mary's BBQ burger. All were okay and nothing spectacular about it. Ambiance was nice so I will definitely go back again when I return to visit. read more

Have been to this location several times and while in a great location and like historic flair of the building, food and service are just ok. Pimento cheese nachos are excellent and worth the trip. Pulled pork, chicken and sides are good but nothing special. Sides are just average as well. Hush puppies with drizzled honey are also very good. Sweet tea very inconsistent. read more

Holy cow was this place amazing!! We got the bbq charcuterie board and got to sample some of the best bbq I have ever had. And I'm from Texas! Six kinds of bbq sauce, my fave was the vinegar based Carolina style, but we tried them all and loved them. The lovely staff even sold us a few bottles and are going to ship them home so we don't have to travel with two bottles of sauce. The pork roll was out of this world. Brisket melted in the mouth, pulled pork was succulent and flavorful, and the ribs. Dear lord those ribs will haunt me forever. Might have to swing back by to grab some on the way out of town. My daughter was going to have her husband's birthday dinner at another location but after she had called the establishment they said they did not take reservations. She told them that she needed seating for 24. They said they had tables. When we arrived they said they could not sit everyone together and it was going to be a 2 hour wait. So so good! When visiting my family, I always like to get some BBQ. Yes, I'm a vegetarian who enjoys going to BBQ restaurants. Still with me? Here's why. A good BBQ restaurant will have delicious sides, and side plates are not to be missed. Mighty Quinns is known as some of the best BBQ and NYC and their sides are trash. Improper Pig's side plate was INCREDIBLE. I got sweet potato casserole, mac and cheese, hushpuppies, and pasta salad. The pasta salad was refreshing and light with their tomato vinaigrette dressing. The hushpuppies were crisp and the outside and soft on the inside, and were a perfect pairing with the honey butter served alongside. The mac and cheese was also perfectly cheesy, and was just fantastic. The sweet potato casserole was my least favorite, but that didn't mean that it wasn't good, it just was more molasses-y tasting than what I personally prefer. My husband got the No Pig Sandwich and he loved it. He didn't feel like he was too full after eating it, and I was glad that this was a place that relied on something like a portabello mushroom instead of an impossible burger or beyond burger which, while vegetarian friendly, are not the type of thing most vegetarians are looking for to eat. Lastly, the sauces. Man the sauces. I tried all of their BBQ sauces and honestly it would be impossible to come here and not find a sauce for everyone's liking. We got beers from Amor Artis and sat out back and they came and brought the food out on the patio. Honestly I scarfed everything down so quickly I didn't even get a chance to take a picture. Highly, highly recommend the combo with Amor Artis or even just a visit here by itself. read more

Every single thing that we ordered was superb! The appetizers were mouth watering. Everyone tried a bite of everyone else's dish and they raved about each bite. I'm sure this is just a case of "working out the kinks" since the place has only been open for 4-5 weeks as of our visit, but I thought I'd leave this review nonetheless, knowing I can update it should we decide to go back at a later date. We went on Saturday evening, arriving around 6 p.m., and were told it would be an hour wait for a table. No problem - we knew it would be a long wait. We went over to the bar area to hang out and found two 2-person tables were just coming available with no wait. We opted to divide our party of four. Two of us sat at a high top, and the other two sat at the counter that overlooked the pass and kitchen. Service was very slow, but we were forgiving at first because the restaurant was packed. We eventually put in our order. We got the same thing (pork and brisket) with different sides. We also ordered the hush puppies appetizer. It took a while, but our food finally arrived. First, the hush puppies and the honey butter sauce they use were OUTSTANDING. We devoured them in just a few minutes. As for our side dishes, my asian slaw was decent. My sweet potato fries were decent. The jalapeno grits were delicious. But the star side dish hands down was the sweet potato casserole that my husband got. I think I ate more of his SPC than I did of my own sides. It was amazingly good. As for the BBQ and brisket, sadly they were both disappointed. The BBQ pork was stringy and dry, and the brisket was clearly the end of the slab and the portion was small. Flavor was fine (the BBQ sauce I used was their sweet tomato based sauce and it was nice), but portions were small and the meat in general was only average at best. What was most disappointing is that as we sat there eating our meal, we had an eye on the pass the entire time (it was right.there.) and we saw every meal that was being sent out to other diners. We saw HUGE portions of juicy, tender, thick cuts of brisket paired with a lovely pile of juicy BBQ pork going out. It made our trays of food look like an after thought by someone in the kitchen. I don't know if it was a matter of lack of quality control to make sure everyone got the exact same portion, or if it was truly the fact that our trays were made up of the bare-bones end of a slab. But we definitely didn't feel like we got our money's worth of quality meat on our trays. As for our friends at their table, they waited FOR EVER for their food. We were already almost done eating our entrees before their appetizer arrived at their table (and only because they reminded their frazzled waitress that they had ordered it). Our plates were eventually cleared by the wait staff and we proceeded to wait another 15-20 minutes for our check to arrive. We weren't even sure who we needed to get our check FROM because we had 1 person take our order, 1 person refill drinks and 1 person to bring our food. Interestingly, our friends received and ate their entrees AND got their check in the time we sat waiting for our own check to arrive. Will we go back? Probably - but not for a long while so they can work out their timing and QC issues to ensure that every guest gets the same portions and the same service every time - whether or not the place has plenty of open tables or is packed to the gills. read more

Awesome place! I've been dying to try this ever since I saw the name AND that they cater to vegan as well as meat eaters. Seeing as I have so many dietary restrictions, it's wonderful to find places that I can eat especially in my new home. I got the tofu bao buns with salt and vinegar chips and my husband got the half bbq rubbed chicken with spicy green beans and Asian slaw. We both really enjoyed our meals and will definitely be coming back. I can see us becoming regulars here. Also, our server was a ray of sunshine. We found our GO TO SPOT for everything incredible and mouth watering! Chicken wings were hands down the best! No sauce added but they have various bar b q sauces on the table that were the added dose of perfection. We had 1/2 rack of ribs that were the best food I've even had in any restaurant, in any state, or in any country. The Sweet Potato casserole will have you driving home and slapping your mama! Make sure to eat here if you're in the area! I ordered the DDD Improper Charcuterie which consisted of pulled pork, brisket, andouille, and ribs. The pimento cheese was the side item I particularly enjoyed. The meats were cooked to perfection and were made even better with the 5 available sauces on the table. I would recommend the eastern vinegar or Jeff's mustard on the pulled pork. The brisket was delicious with the Mary Bs or Queen Bee sauces. Try the pickled onion with the sausage...yum. Ribs were nice and tender - I'm sure they were cooked slow & low. Also, I think the slaw was tasty and had a good crunch. Excellent flavors. The banana pudding was amazing for dessert. Delish! We were in town for the weekend and tried it on Saturday night, it was so great we came back for lunch on Monday. Every foodies delight! Service is on point. Everyone is so friendly. The manager visited our table on Saturday and he was very passionate about the food and a coupon for a return visit is always a bonus! We ordered the pork bun tacos, and the mushroom burger the first night. Each dish was scrumptious. The bao was soft and tender. Perfect size too. Burger was cooked perfectly. Would have loved to taste more vinegar on the chips but just my preference. For lunch we did the salmon BLT, probably my favorite of all the dishes over the two visits. Be prepared to wait for a table if you show up at one of the typical lunch and dinner times (the price one pays for a successful restaurant). We ordered a mixed plate of BBQ (brisket, pulled and dry rubbed ribs), all were good, the ribs were outstanding, OUTSTANDING! Amazing dry rubbed ribs, will not find a better rib anywhere. The server while attentive however a little quick to pull the trigger collecting our plates, presenting the check and "gently" pushing us towards the door, at least the manager made a visit to ensure we were happy with the meal. Other than the server the only other less than optimum aspect was the brisket. Having lived in west Texas my expectations of brisket is pretty high, I would have to say that it was a little on the dry end, smokey and lean however just a tad dry. This is definitely a pretty good bbq spot, only reason it isnt 5 stars is because I have had better. However by no means does that mean it tastes bad. First off the hush puppies are pretty big and they're nice and fluffy. Then I had pulled pork, and with all the special sauces they had it was pretty good. Now for sides I had mac and cheese and collard greens. The mac and cheese was nice and creamy, however the collard greens were a touch bland, could definitely do with some more flavor. All in all great experience, food was definitely a 8/10 and service was a 10/10. Can't complain about that. Wouldn't mind going back to try other dishes that they offer read more

Went here for lunch. The food was disappointing. Really surprised by some of the reviews. We started with hush puppies that came with the sweetest honey sauce. It was too sweet to eat. Had a BBQ sandwich with Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was gritty and also not very good. The bbq itself didn't look like it had seen any smoke. None of the chopped pieces had any pink that would indicate it's been smoked. It was also very greasy. Thoroughly disappointed and won't be back. They have petitions separating all the tables and booths, which I get some people may appreciate but it for gives off the vibe that you're eating inside a COVID jail. read more

We stopped in around 6:30 on a Saturday evening and the place was packed, luckily we were able to snag a small high top table in the bar area (first come/first serve seating around the bar). Our server was informative, friendly and made great recommendations. We settled on Nachos with brisket, pork rolls and Mac and cheese. The nachos are ligit..... Homemade salt and vinegar potato chips, topped with pimento cheese, brisket and BBQ sauce... A must try that is large enough to share with several people. The pork rolls (think egg roll with BBQ inside) were wonderful! The Mac and Cheese was so-so..... I'd probably skip it next time. The restaurant offers great happy hour specials during the week including half price nachos, $3 pork rolls, and $3 OMB copper drafts! Their kids menu prices are completely reasonable ($2.99 for Mac and cheese with a side and a hush puppy). Great for A family meal or a date night! read more

This old building, renovated in Downtown Fort Mill, SC (just a skip away from Charlotte) has such an amazing ambiance with trendy lighting and old brick walls. The food had such a depth of flavor in each of the courses (and the owner was explaining how many of the sauces really are family recipes.) You can NOT head here though and skip the Improper Nachos: housemate pimento cheese dip over homemade potato chips, topped with a meat of your choice (if you want). The hushpuppies were a classic with an awesome whipped butter. For the meats, I really liked the pulled pork and andouille sausage best. However, this location has a wood fire grill and serves steaks and pork chops on it, etc. Their Moonshine Mule was a great beverage, and banana pudding a classic..... and I still want more nachos. read more

Very good BBQ and ribs! I ate at their food truck, The Oinker, prior to their opening in downtown Fort Mill and loved it, so of course the wife and I had to visit the store. Since they opened about 3 weeks ago, been three times already! Sooooo gooood! Sauces are good, house slaw is creamy, pork bbq is tender, I can't say enough. We waited about 25 minutes once we got there, which gave us time to try out the bar area. We're finally seated and get our orders placed. The food starts trickling out about 30 minutes later but only half the order arrived. The GM came over and explained that there was a glitch in the system and our orders didn't get placed. 28 more minutes and the rest of the food finally arrives. Our server was less than empathetic but the rest of the staff was helpful and truly apologetic. Positive note: food was amazing. Mac & cheese burger, pulled pork bowl, so good. Ahi tuna was actually decent. A lighter option if you're looking for something to balance your pimento nachos... drool. Tofu was really bad (I eat a good amount of tofu) but might improve over time. In time, if they figure out where to keep people waiting (the bar walkway gets pretty congested) and get their order system running they're going to kill it. read more
