This is my favorite restaurant in Fort Mill. It's where I go whenever it's my choice. The salads are fantastic. The hush puppies are perfection. The cobbler converts even the non-fruit lover. Stopped here while driving through South Carolina. Located in a cute area. Easy city parking lot behind the business. Went late afternoon and was able to be immediately sat. Valerie was our waitress and was everything you'd ask for in a waitress. We started with the pork egg roll. It was good. Came with two sauces, a Japanese white sauce and their Tong's Thai (like a sweet and sour). Their is also another sauce on the table that went well with it which is the spicy hoisin. For our meals we did chicken chow bar sliders. We're good but thought afterwards we should of went with pork. And then a platter with pork and sausage. For sides we had the mac & cheese, jalapeño cheese grits and sweet potato casserole. The mac & cheese and jalapeño cheese grits get special recognition. Meal also came with a hush puppy (above average) and pickled onion (delicious). If you were in the area and thinking about this place, I would recommend it. read more

Service was a 5+. Food was a 3. Really nice interior. Fun bar area. We had great service from our waitress and other staff members. Manager was visible, walking the floor helping the wait staff and talking to customers. Food came out quickly, was hot and correct. Zero complaints at all regarding service. However, unfortunately, the food was only okay. The appetizers (nachos and egg rolls) were really good so we were very excited for our meals. Menu is quite extensive and there are a lot of choices. We ordered bbq plates and I think that's where we missed the mark. The brisket and pork were okay, but far from excellent. Fries are not fresh cut and not even great for frozen. The cheese sauce on the Mac n cheese was kind of bland and grainy. It was all just very average. We did see some really amazing looking salads and other items go by. If we come back, I think we will try items that are not just straight up bbq and we will be more pleased. read more

We were visiting family at Lake Wylie, SC and I had a need for barbecue. Five of us hit The Improper Pig in the cute town of Fort Mill. They have a decent selection of draft beers as well as canned. I started with an IPA while perusing the menu. You can order a plate (one meat and two sides) or a platter (two meats and two sides). The regular sides are good, but there is also a set of upgraded sides, which cost a little extra. There is an odd management decision - the upgraded sides cost $1.00 more if ordered as side dishes, but when you upgrade on a plate or platter, each is $1.50 more. No rationale for that, but so be it... I had the platter with brisket and Andouille sausage (both are up-charges from the regular pork, chicken or tofu proteins), and for my sides I had the jalapeño cheese grits and the (up-charge) spicy green beans. The andouille was really good, and I paired it with the spicy mustard barbecue sauce, one of the six sauces available at each table. The brisket was cooked perfectly, and I tried it with two different sauces, one was a honey-based and both were good. There was some untrimmed fat on the brisket, which IMO should have been trimmed off in the kitchen. Maybe it's a Carolina thing to leave the fat on...? I like a little more kick in my barbecue sauce, and they had six different "pucker up" sauces by the bar, so I tried a watermelon Carolina Reaper sauce and it was wonderful. The jalapeño grits were good, and would have been great if they were served (temperature) hot instead of lukewarm and with a little more sliced jalapeño. If we have time to go back I would ask for the kitchen to hit them in the microwave and then gimme some more sliced jalapeños on the side. Pretty please. The spicy green beans were fantastic, and I think I'm going to call them to see if they will share the recipe. Fresh green beans in a very nice spicy pepper-flake sauce. Really special and really good. My wife had coleslaw as one side and it was meh. Really no different than the mayonnaise-based coleslaw you'd buy at the grocery store counter. She also had the sweet potato dish as a side and she loved it, though it was very sweet. Another relative had the pork and declared it delicious. Plates and platters include a hush puppy and some pickled onions. The pickled onions were very good, but it was a small portion - literally one forkful. I could have eaten a cupful of those, given the chance. Next time I'll ask for a heaping helping. The hush puppies were good - it's my first time having those, so they were sweeter than I expected. We went there on a warm August evening and they had the air conditioning cranked. It must have been about 68 degrees. I was wishing for a sweater, and I'm usually pretty tolerant of cold air. Be prepared and bring a sweater or light jacket. Their full menu includes nachos, wings, other tasty- appetizers, burgers, and more. The reason for our visit was the barbecue, and the barbecue was very very good. We shall return! read more

My spouse said she loved their green beans but ribs were tough and chewy, and smoked wings were too crispy (borderline burnt) and the Mac and cheese hurt my soul. A small group of us came here for my mom's 60th birthday dinner. Not only was the food AMAZING (get the nachos - honestly- who came up with putting pimento cheese on homemade potato chips with pork and chives?! I don't know, but God bless you). My mom wanted to do a "Mother and Daughter" lunch date so we did. I wanted to go somewhere new and mutual so we chose The Improper Pig. I was really excited because I've heard good reviews from others. From coming in and being greeted, everyone was nice and ready to seat us. We were seated immediately. Our server was well educated about the menu and made great suggestions. There was such a variety and so much to choose from. We started with the Pork Roll and it was good. We really enjoyed it. Next we both had Caesar salads before our entrees. The salads were definitely fresh. My mother order the salmon with sweet potatoes and I ordered the smoked half chicken with sweet potatoes and mac & cheese. That salmon was full of flavor and cooked to perfection. The half chicken was ok. I wasn't a big fan and wish I would have gotten the salmon. The mac and cheese and sweet potatoes are BOMB! Delicious!!! Terrible food and even worse service. My takeout bbq platter was served with a soggy ball of fried dough (meant to be a hushpuppy) and without a hint of bbq sauce. When I called to voice my concerns, the manager Dee was rude and extremely condescending. As a manger and a leader, you are required to lead by setting the example. After my conversation with Dee, the location manager, it's easier to understand why the staff lacks basic restaurant/hospitality skills such as quality assurance and attention to detail. Ate at Improper Pig this past Monday with my husband and brother and sister-in-law who were visiting from Pa. I ordered the pork bbq sandwich and about halfway through eating it I bit into a two inch triangle shaped piece of plastic wrap. Killed my appetite. Waitress took it away and a manager came and apologized and they offered me another meal, I declined and they did not charge me for my meal. My sister-in-law had ordered a burger medium-well and it came out rare and had to be sent back, so we did not all get our food at the same time. It was a disappointing evening out. We have been here quite a few times and, you might have guessed, have tried several items. Beet salad with each of their protein options (salmon, chicken, pork, or beyond burger patty), Southwestern chopped salad with chicken, California chicken Cobb salad, Mary B's bbq burger, and Hush puppies. The food was good. My husband absolutely loves their beet salad and switches up the protein. Do not wrinkle your nose at the Beyond Burger (vegan patty), it is very good and has the look and texture of an actual burger patty. We tried their Pork roll during happy hour. It is a single roll cut diagonally - $3 Happy Hour price, $5 regular. Although it was quite tasty, you are only given ONE. I did specifically ask if the HH portion was special for happy hour and was told that was the regular serving. On one occasion I ordered the Salmon plate $18 (market price) with 2 sides - baked beans and house salad extra $2.50. I was puzzled that it was market price for the salmon plate and for added protein for the beet salad it is $5, albeit a smaller portion, which was about half the size of the salmon plate. Overall, great place with selections to fit any diet and/or craving. Their salmon was a hit EVERY time we ordered it, on the salad or a plate. They have happy hour specials, just ask. Although they have beer on tap, you can also enjoy a cold one at the brewery next door and they will bring your order to you! read more

It was great. The notorious P.I.G are great! Hush puppy pigs in a blanket. Original. Great! Pimento cheese: Very very good! The pulled pork: BANGING. Perfect consistency for how i enjoy my BBQ, (moist, but not too moist) Mac N cheese: BANGING! I would eat nothing but the mac n cheese honestly. Very good. Not too creamy, not to little. Just right. Spicy green beans: Woah. Whole new experience with these bad boys. Perfect flavor. Perfect kick. Right amount of everything here. Highly recommend giving those babies a shot. Last, but certainly not least. The banana pudding.... first of all, you get a MASSIVE bowl of it. Second, even after eating all the things. I could eat a bowl of that by myself. So fresh. The food was great, I was able to share the Improper Charcuterie with my husband along with a side salad. The salad was delicious, I enjoyed the freshness of the greens, carrots, tomatoes and the cucumbers being thinly slice (nothing out of this world but it was so good). The charcuterie was big enough to share with my husband and I. Well I was not too hungry and a few bites of eat meat. The meat was perfectly roasted, the brisket was juicy with a bit of fat. The pickle onions were great to cut some of the flavor to transition from one meat to the other. I have been dying to try this place. I had heard such great things that I was very disappointed. Service was poor, she never even refilled our water and didn't seem like she even wanted to be there. As for the food, it was average at best. I ordered the platter. The pulled pork was good after I tried all 6 sauces. The waitress didn't explain any or even offer to. My pulled chicken was a large piece of breast meat someone didn't bother to pull apart. My macaroni and cheese was obviously old and dried out. The collars were very good if you like spice. My daughter had a burger. She said it was okay. The Mac and cheese on hers was dried out also and her fries were cold. I'm not very familiar with the area. So, it was a surprise to find only one street, with two bars and only the improper pig open on a Saturday around 3 PM. Of course, it was almost crowded. We were seated by Monika on a table, despite we weren't welcome or we wanted to sit actually on a booth. First time there, and told to our waitress, who asked if we had any questions about the menu.. (well give me some minutes to take a look to it at least, I thought). Asked her about what kind of sodas could we get (it was not shown on the menu). Coca~Cola, she answered quickly. Ordered coke zero. She apologized because they had diet coke. Cool! Then she apologized again because they ran out of it. The place is well decorated. Love the murals on the wall. Trendy micro brew environment restaurant. But, on the other side, you'll find the bar with a few tables for two persons more and you can take a view of the kitchen. I ordered the "Fort Mill Plate", comes with 1 meat (chicken or pork, or tofu) and two sides. Hubby had sliced beef brisket with chips. We liked the Queen B and Mary (something) sauces. My sides were the house slaw (nothing special) but hands down to one of the best sweet potato's casserole I have ever had! Love the 80's music as well. Reasonable prices. A few persons including the waitress came to check on us. So, if you are near the area, it's a must! I highly recommend the Improper pig. read more

I struggled whether or not to go 4 or 5 stars on this one. I simply ordered the wrong item. I should have known that you shouldn't order a hamburger in a bbq joint. To be fair there was little wrong w the BBQ burger there was just nothing that blew me away. However the nachos with the pulled pork were exceptional and I enjoyed that they used home made potato chips instead of tortilla chips. Others in my party ordered the bowl w Mac and cheese covered in bbq called the fern bowl. They loved it as well. The presentation of the food is good and the atmosphere is unique and inviting. The staff is friendly and my only complaint is my senior citizen mother was not allowed to order off the kids menu until she really pushed it and they finally let her. Plan some extra time to have a beer at the Amor Artis brewery next door. Loved the fact that they had toys for my 2 year old to play with while we had a pint. read more
