Came here with some friends on our big field trip to Red Bank from NYC. We were promised an older school NJ vibe and great food, which is exactly what we got. The waitresses are extremely direct, but in a fun way. They will definitely joke around with you a little bit, which is something I like in my diner experiences. I ordered the Inbetween Half-Benedict, which is like Eggs Florentine with the added bonus of crispy bacon and a slice of tomato. Totally decadent, totally delicious, totally not something to order if you're on a diet. I see in the other reviews that the food is sometimes slow. That was not the case on the day we were there. Maybe the kitchen speed is hit or miss? Our food came SUPER quick. I've also seen that sometimes substitutions don't work out. I'm thinking maybe they read that and have worked on it because my friend asked for a cheese substitution for an omelette and it was done with pleasure. *shrug* Coffee was good and plentiful, something else I like in my brunch :) I'd certainly go again. read more

We drove down for a different breakfast choice that did not work out, so this was our second choice. Our second choice ended up being great! The place is cute and cozy, though most tables were 6 tops; no party of 2 joined our table so if it's busy (as it was when we left around 930 on Sunday), expect to wait. I was pleased to see not only coloring books, but also figurine toys for kids. Our food was great; my daily special crepe had me over the moon and with enough leftovers for a second breakfast. My husband loved his crepe, and the kids enjoyed banana pancakes and french toast. A good combination of typical breakfast place and unique items too, making this place special. Went here for the first time recently and will definitely be going back. It was quite crowded as you can imagine on a Sunday morning but we were seated and accommodated within 5 minutes. I have been to the in between cafe multiple times and I never been disappointed. The service is tremendous, all their staff are super friendly. Their California omelet is one of my favorites not saying their other omelets aren't amazing too. I recommend this place to anyone looking for good food and a good environment. My husband and I love going to diners and have been to all the local (and not so local) ones many times. Our favorite meal is breakfast, which we eat out both weekend days and most holidays, and we're tough critics. My meal of choice is two eggs over medium and, even though I'm almost always disappointed in the outcome, I keep plugging along every week and ordering it. To those short order cooks out there: over medium means the outside is slightly browned and the yolk is liquid, with no runny whites. Just yellow to sop up with your toast. The only places that consistently get it right are the Middletown Pancake House and now, the Inbetween Cafe. This morning was our first visit to the place and we liked it so much we decided on the spot to add it to our diner rotation. The eggs were perfect, the potatoes were great, and the toast was tasty. Not to mention the coffee, which was freakin' heavenly! Not like dishwater like another reviewer stated. The waitress was friendly, the food was served quickly, and the bill wasn't too high. On the negative side, the place was kind of cramped, but we eat early so that shouldn't be a problem. There was one co-ed bathroom; now THAT's gonna be a problem if it's crowded and I've gotta go. Other then those two issues, I couldn't find fault with anything else, and I'm pretty hard to please. To the guy who decided to put a ban on the place because they yelled at his kids: go eat at the Turning Point! My husband and I put our OWN ban on THAT place because it was kiddie-city. There's nothing worse than looking forward all week to a diner breakfast (or lunch or dinner, for that matter) and having it ruined because you can't have a pleasant conversation with your spouse due to a table of noisy, high-pitched kids. I commend the chef for looking out for the comfort of the other diners in his restaurant by asking you to quiet your kids down. It's his responsibility to do so. read more

Best Breakfast around. My favorite are the fruit crepes with homemade yogurt, and the pancakes which are among the best I've ever had. The chef is inventive and creative with his pairing. The food is fresh and presentation inviting. Looks like a diner inside, but far from diner fare. On return once again to the Inbetween, once again for breakfast... I have to say I need to update to as good as it gets. Aside from the attentive friendly service, I had the absolutely best omelet. Read so many bad reviews that I was nervous going here to meet up with friends. I couldn't have been more delighted! The food was great ( I had one of the special omelettes - maple bacon, spinach and goat cheese), and the service was excellent. I think I could've ordered anything on the specials menu (check out their FB page beforehand) and been happy with my choice. People complained about surly wait staff - I saw nothing but smiles. I don't write reviews often, but we just had a bad experience at this restaurant. Waitress was rude. It took over 45 mins to get our simple breakfast and it wasn't crowded. When I asked nicely, after 35 mins, when our food would arrive, one of the staff said he would let me know. But he never did. When I asked our waitress 10 mins later, she said it was about ready. She then rudely confirmed that it's always like this. I requested napkins and never got them. My orange juice glass was cracked and dripping. Food was ok. When I went to pay, the cashier told me cash only. So I then had to pay an extra $2 fee to withdraw $ from the ATM they have next to the register. I suggest you avoid this place. read more

I have been a long time regular at this small Red Bank luncheonette so while I do recognize the great work that goes on in the kitchen, my Yelp oath compels me to remain objective and report some of their unfortunate short comings out on the floor. I will start by saying some of the items on the menu are absolutely fantastic. The roast turkey that they serve on a fresh hard roll with american cheese, crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo is one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten, and most importantly it is true to form every time - very reliable option! To be honest, I haven't tried many other lunch items because every time I step inside I crave the roast turkey so much that I can't bring myself to deviate from the subconsciously chosen path. They have breakfast and lunch specials daily that range from gourmet french toast with fresh berries and 100% Vermont Maple syrup to interesting egg concoctions with brie, feta and goat cheeses. I usually opt for something a bit more simple like scrambled eggs with cheese, which the chef actually takes the time to blend together unlike diners that simply lay a piece of unmelted cheese on top of your eggs as they go out the window. Or eggs over easy (which are always cooked perfectly) with some breakfast potatoes, and some of their scratch made pancakes that always taste homemade. As some of the previous reviews have mentioned they do have great soups as well that go along famously with some of their great sandwiches for a light lunch. One of the noticeable drawbacks that prevent this place from being the local gem that it's food allows it to be is the lack of comfortable and convenient seating. They have six or seven small rows of three two tops each which are stacked right on top of each other that force everyone to either wait lengthy periods for adequate seating, or sit right next to other patrons. They also do not maintain any semblance of a proper system when it comes to waiting with your party for seating, there is no hostess so it's up to you to remember where you are in line and hope that everyone else is honest and courteous of others. Another draw back is the spotty service and general attitude displayed by some of the ladies that serve there. The wife of the chef is usually there and she is absolutely delightful; however, I have had bad experiences with some of the other ladies who are down right nasty and barely even break a smile. It is not uncommon to wait a while for service, or have someone walk by you numerous times without taking your order, and if your really lucky you can sit there starving while your breakfast sits on the ledge within eye view while you wait for your server to come back in from their smoke break right in front of the cafe. As I stated, I am a long time regular and I love the food, but all must be revealed on Yelp! Another side note is that the prices here are no where near as reasonable as some previous reviews have stated, in fact the prices are rather high. A simple lunch with a few iced teas can easily cost you over $24, which I tend to think is quite expensive considering the ambiance and overall feel of the cafe. The daily specials are also very expensive with an order of french toast with berries and syrup costing over $12 or $13 which makes it less of an option as a side along with eggs or something else. Overall this place is great because of the solid and consistent food but the lack luster service and occasionally uncomfortable seating arrangements do raise a few concerns. read more

My girlfriend ordered stuffed pancakes w/ cream cheese, strawberries and blueberries and I ordered the california omelet with avocado, spinach, sun dried tomatoes and monterey jack cheese. her pancakes were overcooked and very heavy. my omelet had entirely too much butter, the ingredients were just thrown in there w/ little to no care, and it was delivered in a very messy fashion. home fries were overcooked and obviously sitting out for a while. toast was saturated with butter. this and coffee amounted to $25 which in our opinion was terribly overpriced. not going back. read more

I wasn't impressed with the place, the service or the food. We sat ourselves and were served coffee. Our waitress came to take our order but we never received menus. It took quite awhile for food and considering it was breakfast it's usually much quicker. The hash browns were burnt. Crispy and charred. We waited and waited for coffee refills. I asked our waitress for more coffee and after a few minutes she grabbed the coffee pot and refilled other tables around us. I researched this restaurant before going and the reviews helped me with my decision. We were in town just one night and needed a good breakfast place. I was disappointed and should have gone to a basic diner. I always give the "hole in the wall" places the benefit of the doubt (they usually are a "hidden gem")... Not this one. My wife has been raving about this place for weeks so I finally went for lunch on Sunday. I was pleasantly surprised. It looks like an old school diner inside but the food is wonderful.
