The staff here was very friendly and offered me complimentary tea while I waited for my Togo order. The food was amazing. Best Indian food I've tried in the area. So... I took the recommendation and went on a Monday night with my neighbor. We both love Indian food, so was excited to find something so close. We were the only two in the restaurant, however a lot of traffic for take out. The lady that brought our food was lovely, but the waiter who took care of us seriously needs some training... he kind of 'creeped' around, not leaving the table/always standing nearby, almost like he was listening to the point I told he could leave, which sadly he came right back. Now onto the food... don't get the poppadoms... I lived in the UK for a year and a half and they were by far the worst I have had, not to mention they don't come with the appropriate sauces especially for the cost. The rests of the food was good - sadly it wasn't hot enough. We had asked for medium hot to hot and it wasn't even medium. BUT the food was good, had great flavor! We ordered the Aloo Gobi, Saag Paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb vindaloo. The flavor was one of the best I have had, just wish it was spicier. Excellent food in a nice casual setting! Glad we finally got this place in Costa Mesa. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala with Naan bread. Everything was great, awesome sauce with succulent pieces of chicken breast meat! The food tasted fresh and was brought out really fast which was great since I was in a rush to get back to work after lunch. Since they also do Nepali food, it adds a few items on the menu that you don't see at a typical Indian restaurant, so I plan on trying some of them next time. I'll definitely be a regular! Staff is rude, I called in for a pick up order and when asked about my total I was left hanging. I kept saying "hello" until someone else picked up, finally. I thought maybe they were just busy, when I picked up my order the guy who helped me was very rude, like I was not a paying customer but a free loader instead. Mind you I didn't show up right after opening or during closing time, I was here at 2 pm so I really don't think I deserved that treatment. The food here tastes good and the staff seem nice, but I don't know WTH they do in the kitchen. I ordered a take out of Chicken Tika Masala, Chicken Vindaloo, and Garlic Naan. After paying and taking the food home, my wife and I immediately started eating. The food was very delicious, but as I was eating the rice, I found an inch and a half strand of black hair that didn't look like it was from a person's scalp - more like armpit or pube?!?!! Freaking gross! I told my wife but she said "what are we gonna do? go all the way back to the restaurant just to get the rice replaced?" It wasn't worth the trouble so I tossed the rice and continued finished the rest of the food. Besides the hair in the rice, we were pretty satisfied. But later that night, my wife woke up in the middle of the night with a major stomachache, feeling nauseous, and an urge to vomit. The kitchen people are definitely not doing something right. I'm really not sure why this place has such good reviews. Don't get me wrong here, it's not bad. But, it doesn't hold a candle to such places as The India Cook House or The India Gate to name a few. The good thing about the India Cafe is that it is close to me, so for take out it's fine. One of the major things that hinders the India Cafe's success is it's location. It's in that aweful strip on 19th and Harbor where nothing lasts long. There are a lot of homeless people in the immediate area. My first time there there was one sleeping on the sidewalk and he had wet himself. Not very appetizing. If the food was outstanding I might be able to overlook its location, but unfortunately it's not. Mediocre at best, worth a try if you're local. The price is on par with much better Indian restaurants. read more

I'm so glad my sister found this place and told me about it. After living in Vancouver BC, with loads of great Indian restaurants, I got spoiled. Tasting the food here took me back. Today was my third visit and I've tried about half the menu and haven't had one dish that wasn't amazing. It's small and out of the way, but they're super friendly and gave me complementary chai tea when I only had to wait 10 minutes. Can't thank them enough for the outstanding service and superb food. My friend found a Groupon for them and I'm sure glad she did! This is one of the best Indian places I've eaten at by far! The Naan bread here is oven fresh,piping hot at the table..I recommend the garlic Naan. The service is very prompt and friendly. Your water glass is ever empty and we were never looking around wondering where our server was at anytime. Their portions are deceivingly large, they serve in small pots but once you start eating, youll have take home bag for sure. I'll be going back again soon!! read more

It is good to see an Indian place open up in this location. I will definitely visit this place again. We got complimentary India Chai while we were waiting for our food. We did a family alacarte menu with shahi paneer, daal makhani, rice and a variety of naan. Both the food and service was good. I loved their naan's. Service was a little on the slow side...They had a full house. We were disappointed with two things. First, two of our selected dishes were out of stock...Waitress had to come back twice to let us know that they didn't have what we ordered. Second, we ordered "mild" spiciness, but one of thr dishes was extremely spicy with visible peppers. The rest of the food was average. The neighborhood was also a little dicey. Authentic as it gets... great food cooked with care by a friendly crew. I had the lamb curry and garlic naan, and it was fabulous, and I will come back for more next time I am in town (which is twice a year). I told him I wanted a take-out that would be easy to carry with me to the beach, and he obliged :-) I asked for a beer, but you can't buy a beer to go, and I was sad.. so he gave me a coke to go at no charge. We ordered the chicken tikka masala and the saag paneer with lamb biriyani. The saag was a little too watery and the masala was a little too sweet for my taste. But the biriyani was WOW, so good. It was onion loaded and so flavor packed. I would come back just for that next time. We came around 9 pm and there were quite a bit of shady people around outside and it was completely empty inside the restaurant. Ambiance was not the greatest.
