    Chicken and Waffle Special
    Joey S.

Inviting atmosphere but poor food quality. When you think of a tavern you expect easy food, but good food. It's very evident this place has gone downhill in the past couple of years. $32 for a "cheddar waffle" that was clearly cooked too long. Hard, brick like exterior with a bland taste. The chicken was coated in an oat cereal. Tough, and bland. With the audacity to charge $32 for a dish that is barely edible is a crime. So much potential but lost simply to the lack of effort or care.

First time in last night and already can't wait to go back! Every dish that we ordered was delicious, plentiful and reasonably priced. Baby back ribs were tender, burger was juicy and flavorful and the shrimp poboy was so tasty. Onion rings are a must but make sure to share because they are filling. Didn't try dessert but we absolutely will next time. Loved the casual vibes and friendly service. As a local I can't wait to come all year round.

This was our first visit post covid. I love this place. First and foremost, their Covid safety measures are on point! Their glass dividers at the bar are effective and so unique!! Garrett & Eddie were bartending. They were attentive, friendly, we could not have asked for better service! Our dietary needs were gladly accommodated. I asked if I could possibly get the mini burgers with turkey as opposed to beef, and without hesitation, the chefs told Garrett it was not a problem. They were delicious!!! (See photo) We also had the arugula salad with fried goat cheese balls, of course we asked and ordered an extra side. They were amazing! Definitely a must try salad. The special rock shrimp tempura in lettuce wraps were also delicious. Our evening was safe, wonderful and fun! Garrett made our evening! Thank you to MJ Dowlings for a fabulous girls get together.

    Prime rib special Saturday 3/5

3.5 stars above average but nothing mind blowing. Decent food with decent service. If you are a local maybe you would rate it higher. It seems this is a regular spot for locals. Lots is TVs for sports action but definitely not a steakhouse vibe. Sport bar more like it. I had the sea bass and it was average. My husband had the prime rib. Prime rib looks big but it's actually very fatty. Two people with a glass of wine each $111.05 definitely not worth that. I would say a far price for what we had maybe $80. All in all it was not horrible but would definitely try something else before I return.

I hardly know we're to start so here we go, We decided to stop into M J. Dowling's on a Saturday night in December, I had not been here before and don't know why. We were quickly approached by a blond hostess who appeared to be the owner. After being seated in a very comfortable booth with nice back pillows we were greeted by a server who brought a carafe of water to the table. At this point I'm already impressed by service and the wholesome kindness of the staff. Our waiter approached us, took a drink order and gave a few moments to examine the menu. The menu is GREAT, WELL PUT TOGHER ABD FAIRLY PRICED. I ordered wings and a burger with mushrooms and onions. My wife had Nachos. The wings came out quickly and let me tell you there fantastic. The burger perfectly cooked was delicious and the nachos were excellent. During our meal multiple people stopped by to check on our table. For a Restraunte to be this packed and have the service and food dead on GREAT is impressive and a rarity in the Hamptons. Trust me there are popular Restraunte's here who are pethetic So MJDowling BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO WELL BE BACK.

Apparently this is a caesar salad

I got a pizza, which was good (not great), but I paid $15 for the caesar salad...wtf is this garbage?

We called the restaurant to either move our reservation to another day or cancel it, and were told that only the manager could assist us. However, we were told the manager was unavailable because he was busy speaking with regulars at a table. I asked if we could simply be placed on hold until he was available so we could find a solution. We were told no. Instead, the employee said they would "leave a note" and that someone would call us back if they were able to help. Meanwhile, we were told that if the reservation was canceled, we would be charged a $135 cancellation fee -- despite the fact that we were actively trying to work with the restaurant to either reschedule or resolve the situation. The experience became even more unacceptable when the employee eventually hung up on us and then stopped answering our calls. The restaurant only answered after American Express contacted them on our behalf. To be clear, I have no issue with a restaurant having a cancellation policy. What I have an issue with is the way this situation was handled: being told the manager was "too busy" to speak with us, being refused the simple courtesy of being placed on hold, having our calls screened, and ultimately being hung up on. That is an embarrassing level of customer service for an establishment of this caliber. I genuinely hope someone in management -- above the person working the restaurant that evening -- takes this seriously and addresses this behavior. A cancellation policy is one thing; treating a customer with this level of disrespect is another.

Our server (sorry forgot his name) was genuinely friendly - a rarity in the Hamptons these days - and made great food recommendations. The restaurant is one flight up with indoor and outdoor seating, even our inside table offered fantastic water views. Shared an order of burrata (a special of the day) to start, thoroughly enjoyed the creamy globe of cheese resting on tricolor sauce with toast points. My bouillabaisse, comprised of a large lobster tail, clams, mussels, and white fish, was well spiced with a saffron-based broth and served up with butter-slathered toast to mop it all up. Yummy! Partner's lobster rigatoni was made with plenty of fresh lobster meat and a well flavored creamy sauce. He said it was filling and delicious. Excellent experience overall, would definitely return when in the area.

For apps we started with the oysters and the escargo in gruyere cheese which were both fantastic and fresh. Dinner wise I opted for the Philly cheese special and let me tell ya, this can compete with the best of them. It was a triple meat sandy sautéed in a cheese blend on a fresh hero; it was so large I split it. Wine list was nice and ambiance is rather casual but not fully dress down. Id recommend reservations unless you want to sit at the bar, which is another nice option. Definitely recommend.

The seats were a hair uncomfortable but maybe that's because I'm older, no seat or back cushion though. I could not be hear without cupping by hand behind my ear and I needed to talk a bit loud to be heard. :-( Great news for my group--I really had nothing notable to say and was not in the mood to hear about how their Kid or grandkids got an A+ in coloring or naming shapes. The service was ok--not great. We waited a long time to get out check and became more tired than we were motivated to order dessert...so we gave our credit card as soon as we got the check and hightailed out of there. The escargot was not our cup of tea--they had anise and cheese in the l recipe and we just did not like it. We complained and they magnanimously took them off the check. the baked clams were very good. They had just the right amount of herbs and seasoning and were of perfect consistency. I could have eaten a dozen myself! That said just be aware that they come in an order of three (3) so if you are coming with a larger party it might be a good idea to take a count of whoever wants it over parentheses (n) and then multiply by 2 and divide by three so you order enough orders. Orders = (nx2)/3 The crab Caroline salad was a show stopper--absolutely delicious. It's a huge bowl portion that's very sharable. Tasty dressing and substantial lump crab with fresh and crispy greens. The bacon was a bit dry and under seasoned but holy cow was the slab thick and big! If I come back I might ask them to chop it up and put it in the Caroline crab salad--if I can remember! The sirloin steak was very good. I asked the for a "char of all chars" and they did not disappoint! It was seasoned just fine, and tender enough when I cut thinner slices. It was quite good. I'd get it again. The BV potatoes looked great and had a very nice crisp to them. They really could have used a ton less oil and a bit more seasoning. Way too oily from a technical point of view. Not sure if they used butter or not. The creamed spinach was excellent. Perfect amount of cream and steaming hot---might have been helped with a hair more garlic. So, the food was a solid 4 besides the potatoes, escargot and bacon which were between 2, 2 and 3 respectively. The service, lighting and acoustics fell short but were not bad--just not good and probably not average. Overall I'd give them a solid 3+. I go back year after year so suggest people go! Try it!

I had chosen this place to have dinner with friends from out of town that were vacationing in Sag Harbor. Reviews looked pretty good and fit what they were looking for: good food, water view, not too far from where they were staying. When we drove up, I was seriously questioning myself. The outside looks like a little dated and small. But as other reviewers have said, the interior is very nice and spacious! We were lucky to get a window table although it was foggy so we could not see a lot of the water; just the parking lot and dock. But still better than nothing. I forgot to take pictures of the apps but we shared multiple orders of the burata, fritto misto and salmon tartare (yes, you read that right). All were good and I did enjoy the tartare. For entrees, I got the fish and chips, Cathie got the bouillabaisse, friends got the chicken Milanese special (what a deal!!), Scottish salmon with ramen, burgers, and another bouillabaisse. We all loved our choices but highlights were definitely the chicken Milanese dinner special (because even with slight up charges for certain items, it is an amazing deal!!); and the bouillabaisse. As some other reviewers have said, this is a MUST ORDER! The broth is not too tomato forward but instead is very flavorful with other spices, not just saffron, and the same food is generous and prepared so well! I will come back just for this! My fish and chips were good, even the Cole slaw although I prefer meatier French fries (although these were still good, nice and crispy). Desserts were also very good and service was good after a couple of bumpy starts.

A long, dark bar sits by the entryway with cheerful bartenders awaiting. The Bouillasse is a favorite, with clams, muscles, fish, shrimp and lobster in an an unbelievable pinkish-red stew flavored with lovely saffron. I was slightly disappointed the lobster didn't budge easily out of the shell. Nevertheless, the Bouillasse still remains a favorite. Without a doubt, I'll be back for more.
