Every so often, we decide to give M.J. Dowling's another try. And, each time we do, we wonder why we had bothered. ‍ Management is rude and the service is terrible, as is the food. (Can still remember the undercooked shrimp from three years ago.) When you ask a waiter how something on the menu is and he shrugs, you should probably take it as he doesn't like the food, either. If you sit at the bar and try to have a decent conversation, be aware of imbibing patrons. Would like to add something positive, but not sure what. Inviting atmosphere but poor food quality. When you think of a tavern you expect easy food, but good food. It's very evident this place has gone downhill in the past couple of years. $32 for a "cheddar waffle" that was clearly cooked too long. Hard, brick like exterior with a bland taste. The chicken was coated in an oat cereal. Tough, and bland. With the audacity to charge $32 for a dish that is barely edible is a crime. First time in last night and already can't wait to go back! Every dish that we ordered was delicious, plentiful and reasonably priced. Baby back ribs were tender, burger was juicy and flavorful and the shrimp poboy was so tasty. Onion rings are a must but make sure to share because they are filling. This was our first visit post covid. I love this place. First and foremost, their Covid safety measures are on point! Their glass dividers at the bar are effective and so unique!! Garrett & Eddie were bartending. They were attentive, friendly, we could not have asked for better service! Our dietary needs were gladly accommodated. I asked if I could possibly get the mini burgers with turkey as opposed to beef, and without hesitation, the chefs told Garrett it was not a problem. They were delicious!!! (See photo) We also had the arugula salad with fried goat cheese balls, of course we asked and ordered an extra side. They were amazing! Definitely a must try salad. 3.5 stars above average but nothing mind blowing. Decent food with decent service. If you are a local maybe you would rate it higher. It seems this is a regular spot for locals. Lots is TVs for sports action but definitely not a steakhouse vibe. Sport bar more like it. I had the sea bass and it was average. My husband had the prime rib. Prime rib looks big but it's actually very fatty. Two people with a glass of wine each $111.05 definitely not worth that. I would say a far price for what we had maybe $80. Excellent food and service! We come here often and it's the perfect spot if you're looking for good, elevated comfort food. Very homey environment and a perfect place to watch the game, without it being too loud. They also have live music some nights. MJ's has become my new go-to takeout spot. Although I feel their prices are a bit high, their portions are large and I am always very satisfied with my order. My favorite thing on the menu is the Greek gyro salad-- it is massive and very delicious! I hardly know we're to start so here we go, We decided to stop into M J. Dowling's on a Saturday night in December, I had not been here before and don't know why. We were quickly approached by a blond hostess who appeared to be the owner. After being seated in a very comfortable booth with nice back pillows we were greeted by a server who brought a carafe of water to the table. At this point I'm already impressed by service and the wholesome kindness of the staff. Our waiter approached us, took a drink order and gave a few moments to examine the menu. The menu is GREAT, WELL PUT TOGHER ABD FAIRLY PRICED. I ordered wings and a burger with mushrooms and onions. My wife had Nachos. The wings came out quickly and let me tell you there fantastic. The burger perfectly cooked was delicious and the nachos were excellent. During our meal multiple people stopped by to check on our table. For a Restraunte to be this packed and have the service and food dead on GREAT is impressive and a rarity in the Hamptons. If zero was an option that is what this restaurant would get from me. Not because the food is bad, and honestly not even because the service is bad, but completely because the manager (owner?) is belligerent and intoxicated on his shift. Remember, even if you don't care for your patrons, this is the hospitality industry, and the primary focus is making sure your patrons have a good experience. We ordered their Friday night Prime Rib. Appetizers, and drinks were great, and arrived very quickly, and our entrees did as well. The person who delivered our entrees asked if we needed anything. We asked for Au Jus and Horseradish. She didn't understand and said she'd get the waiter. He came over a few minutes later, and said he'd be right back. 5 minutes later, he realized he'd forgotten, and by the time the au jus hit the table, it had been about 10 minutes since we asked for it and the meal was cold. I didn't eat it. Not one bite. I moved it to the end of the table, someone asked me if I wanted to take it home and I declined. The server dropped the check and there it was. I asked to see the manager, and along comes Mr. MJ Dowling himself? (When I asked his name, he told me it was printed on the door). Mr. MJ Dowling was giving the intoxicated stare. The first thing he said was "well, did you order the sauce when you ordered the steak"... Clearly this wasn't going to go well, and dealing with a human this many drinks in, that has been pulled away from drinking at (his?) a bar to actually do his job is never fun. My response was, "well prime rib usually comes with au jus and we asked for it..." he cut me right off to tell me that it does not come with it there and essentially suggested that if we didn't want to pay for it, "just get out and never come back". (Again, this man was intoxicated). Surely sir, we will happily leave and never return. As I was leaving I explained to him again that we asked several times, and his server should have sent him over and removed it from the bill. His reply "why?, the steak doesn't go bad" ... no sir- but it gets cold. When you go to a restaurant, there will be times that your meal isn't great. It happens. I've never written a restaurant off because of one bad night. In fact, I've been to this place a few times, and had a decent experience. This type of behavior is inexcusable. Even if I was 1000% wrong (and I definitely used an expletive that I shouldn't have because I was so shocked, and for that I apologize), restaurants are in the hospitality industry. If my experience in your establishment wasn't great, make me want to return. Telling me to never come back is not going to make one difference in my life, but now I will make sure everyone I know hears how Mr. MJ Dowling treats his customers. Shameful. read more

Went for dinner at 7pm having made and confirmed reservation on Open Table. When we got to the restaurant it was closed with no explanation.

Pretty disappointed in my take out order tonight: clam chowder and a Caesar salad= $29.00. The salad was really skimpy and I get twice as much soup and a really good Caesar salad at The Corner Bar for about the same price. read more

That is just a weird amount. I can see 4 or 5. But 3??? And they were cold.... Strike 2 She ordered their prime rib. $30. It was tasteless. Strike 3. Your out!! Ordered pick up on a late Thursday evening: chopped steak with mash and veg. Got there place was packed so I anticipated a wait. Got my food and headed home. I was a bit disappointed. Big improvement from my last time here a couple of years ago. Boys night out with my Dad who lives on Shelter Island and comes here often. We split an amazing ahi tuna sashimi with avacodo. He had the shrimp frajitas and I had fresh flounder with a scallops and crab meat stuffing over orzos. Both dishes were perfect! Nice selection of beers on tap and the service was great. We love this place. I love the different "nights" that they have! Burger night is a great affordable solution to dinner in the Hamptons. The staff is very friendly, and it has a great "neighborhood" feel to it. We always sat at the bar and the bartenders were always fast and friendly.
