Because I tend to avoid Dirty 6th like the tourist, frat, "woo girl" infested plague that it is, it was no surprise that I had never been to the Jackalope before. But, on a very lovely Sunday afternoon and after several previously consumed drinks, I was talked into going here. I have to say, after my experience (and for the huge, mountable jackalope alone) I would make this place an exception to the my "I don't do Dirty" rule and come back (on a Sunday afternoon). The drinks here are not the overpriced watered down BS that are the standard on D6, but were actually perfectly boozy! The crowd was also not just the D6 usual suspects, but a nice mix of tourists and locals as well. And though there were games on the tvs, and people were talking and laughing, it was still pretty chill enough to have an actual conversation. But, this might just be the fact that it was a Sunday afternoon...I am not quite sure. What made it such a great intro and experience, though, was hands-down the bartender, Riley! Aside from being absolutely adorable, this guy knows his stuff and has a stiff pour! So the next time I am in the vicinity and I see Riley behind the bar, I will definitely pop back in to reclaim a seat on the Jackalope throne. read more

Pretty good burger on Sixth St! The place is a fun bar at night, with a big Jackalope Statue you can climb up onto. However, I also came earlier in the night to grab a bite. Any bar where a male bartender is wearing an "I'm a cunt" tshirt has to be the coolest dive around town. For the few years I lived in Austin for college, I was one of the few (if only) that disliked the city--especially nightlife. Frat boys and drunk hoochie-mamas prowling 6th street freaked me out (I usually did 4th or 5th instead). But there was one place on 6th that was like a second home to me, and that was Jackalope. And now that I visit every now and then, I INSIST to first-timers that we visit Jackalope--it's one of Austin's best bars. Introduced to it by my first and coolest friend at college, "Kat" swore by this amazingly different dive with cheap drinks and leave-me-be crowd. It took me a while to get the name right. For the first few months, I kept calling it "El Diablo." "Let's go to El Diablo ... What the cross street of El Diablo ... I Love El Diablo..." You can't blame me. Screaming "Jackalope" in a bar kinda sounds like "El Diablo." Say it with me: JACK-A-LOPE ... EL DIAB-LO. And considering that the dive is completley black with laces of red, "El Diablo" is just as fitting. Along with the decor and atmosphere, hot naked chicks adorn the walls, metal dudes, rockabilies and badass chicks who look like they could be Suicide Girls encompass the "crowd"--but it's a mix, because there are also dorks like me and the strange fratty OU guido guy who shocked me by saying he'd never had a Texas Beer. Get outta mah face, doooood. I've never had bad service. The owner Jason actually stopped by to say hi to me and my friend, listened to me talk non-stop (I'm quite the talker after a few dranks) and also invited us to their Sunday brunch (we couldn't make it. I mean, we could've, but then we'd prolly be in a ditch somewhere off of 290 right now). The bathroom graffiti will easily keep you entertained; door guy is laid-back; bartenders are always great, especially Muffy (also an Austin Rollerderby badass). On our final day in Austin, Jamie W. and I took a leisurely stroll on the nocturnally rowdy and raucous 6th Street. During the day, it turns back into Dr. Jekyll and feels almost like a family-friendly neighborhood with discount T-shirts and no-frills eateries. We decided to take a chance and have lunch at the Jackalope. Enter and there's no mistaking that it's a dive plain and simple, so expectations of gentility should be checked in at the door. You are greeted by a gigantic plastic jackalope, a cartoonish version of the mythical creature that cross-breeds a jackrabbit and an antelope (see photo). There were several at the long bar already enjoying the happy hour that starts at 11:30AM. The decor is vintage peekaboo, and it seemed fitting that "Road House" was playing on the big screen above the bar with a tightly muscled Patrick Swayze beating up some nasty-looking barflies. After about five minutes, we started to realize there was no waitress to take our order, so Jamie let the bartender know what we wanted. He had the $6.75 Pulled Pork Sandwich, which was a mess of hickory-smoked pork shoulder shredded and saturated in BBQ sauce. No fries for him, so I shared the Waffle Fries that came with the $8.25 Chipotle Bacon Cheeseburger, a cholesterol extravaganza that I wasn't able to hold comfortably since the cheddar cheese had the consistency and flavor of Cheese Whiz. Everything we received was priced right, and as the regulars started to come in, there was a casual vibe to the place. Just wish there was a little more focus on service for those of us who were eating versus the ones who were drinking and giggling. Honey jalapeño burger was very tasty - a bit greasiest than I would have liked but definitely tasty. My sister got the chipotle bacon burger and it was tasty and less greasy. Sweet potato tater tots were yummy, but i can't figure out how the ghost chili aioli complimented them. Definitely was not a fan of that. The service was great. Great food, great people, GREAT STUFF! Stopped here first after arriving in ATX with a free afternoon. The beer selection is great, even after they told us they were out of some of the Pale Ales, it was easy to find something else. Towards the end of the wild part of 6th- this place was recommended to me by a coworker who used to live in the area. We even came back after spending time downtown for pizza to bring back to the hotel! While we were there I picked out some awesome local cider, Eastciders- not too sweet and dangerously easy to drink! They also had a blood orange flavor which was delicious as well. Ordered the mild wings, since they didn't have medium but damn the mild has a kick!!! I recommend mild to those who usually order medium because they are not shy!! IF I COULD GIVE THIS PLACE ZERO STARS - I WOULD. DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU ARE TRYING TO HAVE A GOOD TIME. We came here during a BACHELORETTE. I understand circumstances are weird due to COVID-19. I get that. We ALL get that. We are in Austin visiting for our best friends bachelorette and on our second night here we decided to take the advice from our waiter at Caroline's and go to The Jackalope. We went there at 9pm just to check it out and our bartender, Bart, gave us complimentary drinks. We were so thankful, we paid for the giant mixed drink and went next door for a few hours and then went back to The Jackalope because the bride requested it. We sat down for 20 minutes even ordered some drinks (which they never brought) and they were playing the jams -- so naturally we started dancing around our table. Even the other bartender, Dimitrius, was hitting on one of our bridesmaids HEAVILY and hanging around with us while we were dancing - not even one whole song went by before Dimitrius told us we couldn't be dancing and that we needed to be in our seats. We said okay, that sucks but sure. So we sat down and made sure our butts where planted -- next thing you know some random came up to us and started twerking at our table then on jumped on the couch and started twerking and spreading her legs in the air. Again - SHE WAS NOT WITH US. None of us even knew who she was. Immediately, some angry bartender (that clearly needs to get laid) with a ponytail ran over to us being loud and demanding that WE get out meanwhile Twerker conveniently slinks on back to her table I can understand if we were the ones doing THAT and you wanted to kick us out - FINE. But that was not the case. No one wanted to even hear us out, one of our bridesmaids does not drink and she was very civil in trying to explain to Ponytail Bartender but he literally was non-stop raising his voice to us. He even yells at Bart to come over - and this fool just straight up decides to "go with his boys on this one" and preceded to gesture us to get out Ponytail could not WAIT to kick us out, let me tell you. Like there's some underlying issues there He yelled at us saying "You're not even ordering drinks! You're not even ordering food!!!" NOPE. Wrong again, Ponytail. We DID order food and drinks but your stubborn hating ass didn't accommodate us Meanwhile Twerker (aka THE PROBLEM) is still running rampant inside the bar Also, the pink haired lady was GOD AWFUL. I absolutely hate almost every bar on dirty six .. but I love the Jackalope... Its a great place to take people from out of town, I feel like it has lots of Austin attitude, Its a little weird and I'm sure someone is always smoking pot on the back patio. They always seem to be playing some awesome punk/rockabilly/metal type jams. The beer is reasonably priced and they have a nice selection of locals, cant beat that. One of my favorite drinks here is the saki bomb made with pear cider. I'm sure these have sent many people home vomiting because they are so damn tasty. I'd say stay away from this part of the street for the most part but if you have to come over here this is the place to be. Walk in the front door and there is a larger than life (oxymoronic because they don't actually exist, do they??!!) jackalope that greets you. And, you can sit on top of him/her/it and take some fun photos. Cool decor. Just the right amount of creativity without trying to hard to be hipsterish. Diverse crowd, yet not full of overly intoxicated throwing up on the floor young people (you know who you are Library). Very large space; lots of bar area and tables. Nice outdoor patio with full bar and extra tables. Friendly and fast barkeep. Good drinks. And, they have these cute little 7 oz. Miller bottles of beer for a $1. A good way to keep your wallet in check, your ass from expanding too much, and assist in preventing you from becoming one of the aforementioned "drunk vomit-eers." One of the best on 6th. read more

I always have had a really good time at Jackalope downtown. I thought the one on the east riverside would be same vibes as the downtown location but with the east riverside location being across The Buzz Mill, I would say the downtown Jackalope is your best bet for quality people and safe experiences. The east side location could be cool, you just never know who is going to come in from these two bars. The Jackalope is a staple during 6th street festivities during the weekend nights. It gets heavily crowded on the weekends and I always have fun with my friends every time I visit. I never expected to be on the dirty sixth during daylight hours but Yelp reviews led me here for lunch. Being on 6th street during the daytime is soo different. There's a reason they call it the "dirty" 6th lol, but that's another story. The Jackalope is very chill during the day. For food we got: 1. Chipotle Bacon Cheeseburger- So juicy and flavorful. The patty was thicc and the chipotle flavor was not overwhelming. 2. Bacon and Brie Burger- Exquisite! 3. Waffle fries- Amazing! It was crispy and well seasoned. One order was plenty to share between 2 people. For drinks, I had a Moscow mule and it was cheap and good. I definitely felt it a buzz one drink. After our lunch, we returned back later that night and everything else is unrecalled. We went to eat dinner there Friday night, May 29th and had a wonderful time. Jackalope's staff is always on point. My friend and I shared a grilled catfish po-boy with waffle fries. Unfortunately the waffle fries tasted old and chewy. I told the bartender about them, and also said that we wouldn't need new fries because we were already getting full, but she insisted on bringing us a fresh batch. We gladly accepted them and shared them with some folks who were sitting next to us. That's another positive about this place, it tends to attract friendly people. Also, they always have something interesting playing on tv. Last time I went, it was Natural Born Killers, this time it was American psycho. Jackalope never makes the town's phony baloney"10 best burger" lists (see paragraph above) but it's had to beat a third of a pound of grilled to your liking beef topped with a clever array of condiments on a toasted bun. I haven't tried them all because I like the black and blue so much - just go to the menu and see what grabs you. Waffle fries or sweet potato tater tots fill out the meal nicely. Dirty sixth is not often what I think of when I need a good spot for lunch, but my friend told me The Jackalope had dank ass burgers.....soooo here goes nothing. One with a giant Jackalope statue in the front. Gotta have it's character. It was also happy hour so we indulged in some $4 margaritas while we waited. I wasn't really surprised when they brought out paper plates and plastic utensils for us.... if you can't be drunk, ratchet, and dancing on the tables, I guess you have to.... eat ratchet-ly?? Okay. Now to get to the important part. The food. It. Was. Amazing. Far exceeded my expectations. The burger and quesadillas were juicy and flavorful, and the waffle fries were the perfect snack to share. Then you take a look at the menu and try to make an impossible choice from their specialty pizzas. Sure you can get a plan pizza with pepperoni but why not do it big while you are in Austin. We got the El Diablo and it did not disappoint. It was a good balance of sauce, cheese, and protein. The pizza was baked on a really think crust that held together well despite all the toppings. It was served with the usual cheese and red pepper flakes. Would highly recommend this place for anyone in the downtown area. We came from San Antonio to try this place out due to great food reviews. There are no servers that come to your table, if you want food you have to order at the bar. The staff wasn't very friendly at all and of course didn't have good customer service quality's. The D.J. was playing some good tunes and when our food came out - They had the best wings and Cheese Waffle fries. We had a couple of drinks and ordered a couple more appetizers but then we saw the WORST - A RAT ran above us on the beams and then my husband & cousin saw another RAT in front of him running along the opposite end!!! And we all know if there is 1/2 rats their are more to follow. Obviously this is an issue that they are aware of. Needless to say we grabbed our stuff and left! I felt so disgusted and nauseous!!!
