We started the night with a table of five at five p.m. to hopefully be seated and attended to our christmas show at 7. The waiter we had was a very nice and took care of all of us fairly well. The ambience of the restraunt was amazing we liked how it was more dimly lit. The only issue we had through the night is the wait we got there at 5 and waited an hour and a half to get our entree's. Food was good but not excellent for the amount of food options and the food on the plate being served. We did respect our waiter's accountability for him admitting he should have took our orders better but we were also dissapointed slightly at the same time for how long we waited. Four of us went for dinner tonight and 2 meals had to be returned as we were unable to eat the meat. It was a special for Octoberfest - sauerbraten. My husband tasted it and called it rotten braten. The meat could not be cut even with a steak knife - imagine trying it chew it. We returned the meals and the waitress was very kind about it all. We were really looking forward to eating there because the owners also have South Bend Bistro in Sunriver and it is great. So sad that this experience was so bad. We had an absolutely fantastic experience here!! After a time deciding on cocktails, we all ordered the Huckleberry Cosmopolitans and they did not disappoint. The cocktail list is very well thought out with a mix of classic cocktails (like a Boulevardier) and newer, creative cocktails. The fennel sausage pasta is a MUST have. Wonderful outdoor courtyard in back. Restaurant, itself, was very dark and kind of odd. Service started strong and faltered. King salmon and ribeye were tasty. Radiatori pastas with sausage and tomato were luke warm--pacing of entrees was way off. Escargot was a fun appetizer. Salads were fresh. Of the two that we tried, the burrata was the best. Randomly found this place through Resy. And it is one of the best restaurants I've been to in a long time. I had the Beef Paleron and my wife had the Pecking Duck. And both were simply amazing. The Beef Paleron was melt in your mouth good and the duck was cooked perfectly with a delicious sweet and savory sauce. And for dessert we had the crème brûlée! The custard was cold (like it should be) and the caramelized sugar crust was made perfectly and took a couple good hits with the spoon to crack. I could have ten of those in a row! We arrive and the front desk person rudely states that we don't have a reservation and goes on to ask me to prove my innocence as if I'm just going to walk into a restaurant and lie about a reservation. I was disappointed in both the service and food quality. I brought a friend here from out of town last week. I've dined here about ten times when it was Tim Garling's Jackalope Grill. It was always a special experience then. The wait staff was excellent and very responsive and the food was superb. In October '22 a friend and I ordered a bottle of the DeLille red and I believe it was about $80. Last week, the same bottle was $150, and they were out of two bottles of a red we wanted to order. Service was so slow, we didn't get water for ten minutes and had to ask the waiter for a water refill. He said "she'll be by soon". Soon was not soon. Midway through the dinner we were showered overhead by someone that was power washing the building behind the outdoor area. The Caesar salad was minimal, and tasteless. The previous ownership always gave a Parmesan crisp and the dressing was perfectly prepared. The Schnitzel is gone, it was a favorite. I was a bit embarrassed bringing my special friend here and the the dining experience we had. I am truly disappointed with the decline in this beautiful restaurant! read more

I have mixed feelings about Jackalope Grill. First time we tried it we ordered take out and were impressed with the perfectly cooked salmon (although it had a 'maple syrup' tasting topping that was a little off putting). Still, perfectly cooked salmon is hard to find, the kind that melts in your mouth. Everything else about the meal was delicious as well and we decided to keep Jackalope in the mix for occasional take out during Covid. Problem is, we can't seem to time it right to get an order in for take out. They're closed 3 days a week and the days they are open you have to get your dinner order in before 3pm. We missed their deadline by 5 minutes yesterday and they wouldn't take our order. Very disappointing to say the least. I'm afraid we're going to have to take them off our take out list permanently. Its really too bad. It sounds like they need better management. UPDATE: I just visited Jackalope Grill's website and they clearly state take-out orders must be made before 3:30pm. We had called at 3:05pm yesterday and were denied as having missed their cut-off time for ordering. Its apparent they have way too many changing rules placed on their potential customers (but don't bother to update their website to reflect the changes). I guess they don't want or need new/repeat customers. We definitely won't be calling them again. read more

Charming restaurant in the heart of walkable downtown Bend. Delicious food, great service and lovely atmosphere!!

First dinner at new Lava Street location with outcome similar to our many dinners at old Division Street location. Charming ambiance. Warm hospitality. Some misses on food. And this time, for the first time, major misses on service too. We'll go back but won't rush back. Jackalope is listed as fine dining so it's fair to consider that in the review. Were it a pub, expectations would be different. Four of us left feeling fine dining expectations were not met. Not less than AOK but not more either. Local owners are good folks and we're rooting for them. NICE AMBIANCE : New space as of about July 2012. (see photos) Has small lounge in front with windows looking onto Lava Street. Dark walls in dining room are great backdrop for many pieces of local artists' work. White tablecloths now as before. A BIG round of applause to them for arranging tables in a way that avoids the "sardine can" seating of many other Bend restaurants. As in the other location, music mix is lovely. Although, unlike the other location where the vibe was intimate and more quiet for acoustics, the big space and high ceilings here make it noisy. Nice add for this location is outdoor seating at several tables in large enclosed back patio. DOWNTOWN LOCATION: On Lava Street on the back side of the downtown parking garage; convenient since street parking in downtown Bend is at a premium. On the flip side, this makes Jackalope less visible than some other downtown Bend restaurants in the fine dining class. That may explain why Jackalope was nearly empty when we arrived at 6:30 and was no more than half full for the 2 1/2 hours we were there. SERVICE STRUGGLED : On every experience at the old location, we enjoyed some of the most skilled wait staff in Bend delivering gracious, pitch perfect service. This time our friendly server seemed to be in learning mode with tasks complicated by having to run between outdoor patio tables and tables inside. As one example of several "oops" for the night of being spread too thin, one of our tablemates got up to fetch the host to ask him about a very late wine delivery given he could not get the server's attention as she zipped to and fro. And whether the server's issue or the kitchen's, the food took a long, long time to reach the table. This is a criticism, slow to table food arrival, I've heard from friends who are fans of Jackalope and friends of the owner but say they've been reluctant to discuss it with the chef / owner to avoid wounded feelings. But it does need to be discussed. He can't fix what he doesn't know is broken. If our experience was a common one, this needs attention. FOOD NOT UP TO PAR: Two of four entrees arrived lukewarm instead of hot. Another entree, the daily special, was so over salted and surprisingly swimming in butter (not expected per our server's description) that it was nearly returned to the kitchen to ask them to try again. Instead it remained half eaten. A woman at the next table who ordered the same dish did return hers to the kitchen uneaten and declined her server's offer to replace it. LIMITED MENU: I characterize the menu as "timeless continental". My husband describes it as "past its time" I'll explain by saying he puts a high premium on creativity over the classics. Different strokes for different diners. Menu has about eight starters in things like crab stuffed mushrooms, soup du jour and Caesar salad (from $7 to $12.) On the night of our visit, the menu had but five fixed entree options ($23 - $33) including salmon filet, beef filet, stuffed chicken breast, seafood pasta and jaegar schnitzel plua one nightly special. One of our tablemates was disappointed to find that with but five standard entree choices, at 7pm one of them was already sold out. Also worth noting there was not a single vegetarian entree and among the starters perhaps but two items that would work for those diners. WINE LIST: Extensive with a good number of bottle choices under $50 and many choices above for European wines as well as domestic. Strength in the wine list is a definite plus. We narrowed it down to three bottles and ordered one to find that wine not available. Choice two to the rescue. VALUE: Four entrees, one soup and wine was about $175 before tip. Compared to other fine dining in Bend, like two of our favorites Ariana and Zydeco, prices seem similar. But we found this unsatisfying all around. ACCESSIBILITY: Level in and all on one level including patio. Standard height tables in dining and patio should work for wheelchair users. Not sure about lounge / bar seating. read more

We are locals. Heard of new chef so decided to try Jackalope again after being away for awhile. Dressed up a bit as we were celebrating. Greeted warmly @ the entrance. Arrived a little early for our reservation so stepped into thei bar. Decor there looked as it did when Tim Darling owned it. Proceeded to our table and sat down. Noticed immediately that the table cloths and cushioned chairs were replaced with shiny tables and hard backed chairs. Also it appeared that more tables were crowded together making it a Bistro look rather than an elegant dining experience. I believe there used to be more wait staff roaming the room attentive to customer's needs. As a positive note, our server made sure our food was hot. The new chef made sure it was delicious. For the dining tab, I would expect the ambiance, and table decor to match its fine dining. read more

Wow... I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant but didn't get the chance. We made our reservation for our 25th anniversary and my mother's birthday 3 weeks in advance. It was just canceled last minute with no reason given. We left a message and received a call back. The staff who called was rude and argued with us implying we missed a step or somehow didn't confirm. Rude enough that we just hung up. Screen shots of communications are below. Given the inconsistency in this new dining world when the rules change by state, county, zone, political whim, latest paranoid reaction....we haven't been able to have a truly memorable dining experience since March, regardless of all our travels. Jackelope broke that streak. We were fortunate enough to have sat outside in their amazing courtyard full of flowers and vertical gardens. The salmon was confirmation why no one should ever eat it out of the Atlantic, the schnitzel was even better than we expected...and....wow...the bone marrow. The bone marrow really stole the show. we have eaten there a number of times, even followed them from their past location. Service was mediocre. Restaurant at 5:00 was pretty empty - no problem. We ordered snails, caesar salads, salmon. Snails were served properly but lacked flavor so I added salt and some lemon to help Never had to do that. Caesar salad was very poor, had a few tomato slices, no croutons, no grated parmesan, had to ask for dressing as didn't seem to be dressed. I don't think it was Romaine lettuce. Salmon was good with mini vegetables. Could have been the chef that night, not the owner cooking No excuse for this. read more

This was our first time to Bend, Oregon as we were looking for a bit of a mini-getaway during the COVID pandemic. Right before we arrived the Oregon governor closed all restaurants for in-person dining so we shifted to takeout for our (Thanksgiving) dinner. We were absolutely blown away, not only was the food impeccably prepared and served hot but even with curbside pick up we were greeted with joy and smiling eyes. Holy smokes, this place is DELICIOUS. My wife and I came here to celebrate a few things and we were not disappointed. A beautiful layout, attentive service, and some of the freshest food I've ever tasted. The bone marrow is something I will dream about for ages. The watermelon soup delicately balanced sweet and salty to perfection. The burrata was tremendous. For our mains, I had the wagyu New York steak and she had the veal special. The steak may have been one of the best I've ever eaten, and for a steak that thin, I could not imagine it could be so tender. I tried the veal, it was great, but I was distracted by my steak.... We had a most excellent dinner at Jackalope Grill in July on their beautifully manicured garden courtyard. It's an impressive setting! The food was very tasty and the service was spot on! The name I found rather odd, almost comical, vs. the quality of the food and ambiance. It's a fine dining experience with a funky name. Apparently this place has been around for quite a number of years, and now I know why. I highly recommend JG when in Bend, and ask for the courtyard. read more

My family and I came to celebrate my dads birthday at Jackalope. My husband played a short birthday card video on his iPad for his father in law. The waitress that had the table next to us snapped at us making a very rude comment to our table and really just ruined the moment saying we were being to loud and disturbing other guests when an ipad isn't very loud to begin with. Your staff needs to be a bit more friendly and if you don't want people to celebrate anything then maybe you should list that on your front door. I've never been to a restaurant in Bend that expects guests to have the inside voice of a library. Your food was delicious and our server was excellent but one staff member ruined the night for a short 50 second video clip for all 5 of us. read more

We just walked out after sitting at a table for 45 minutes, that we had reservations for, without even getting the drinks we ordered. I know that being short staffed is a big issue these days, but why continue to accept reservations if you can't accommodate customers. This is the first time we returned to the restaurant after a bad experience 6 years ago. I ordered a traditional German dish, which was one of their specialties. It was frozen solid in the middle. We read a previous review on Jackalope Grill and almost didn't go because of one of the reviews on the service and the terrible Elk Steak. We decided to go anyway and we were so thankful we did. I ordered the Elk, because it sounded so good and boy was it. The best Elk I've ever had and I'm quite a foodie and have traveled all over the world. Another shoutout is for the bone marrow. WOW! Five of us came here for dinner and sat at a table in the bar. The food and service was good but one of our entrees had a cooked rubber band in it. My friend pulled it out her mouth after eating it with her broccoli. We notified the server who apologized and then brought a glass of complimentary port that we didn't ask for, or want and didn't drink. They didn't take the meal or even our dessert off the bill. Considering the entrees are about $45 each and my friend didn't finish hers because of the rubber band they should have done more. Disappointing customs service. read more

Brought guests from Berlin here last night and everything was superb. They fit us in even though they were short a server, and didn't rush or pressure us to leave though we closed the place down & likely kept them late. The service was attentive & friendly, the cocktails were made to perfection (not too sweet as we requested), and the food was also excellent (dip the fresh warm bread in the escargot butter, it's heaven!). The atmosphere of the courtyard is really something special!! The plants and decorative lighting make you feel you're in a secret wonderland garden.
