This place is so incredibly underrated, we absolutely love it here! I think the salmon is the best in Bend. We've always experienced great and friendly service.

My husband and I were in Bend, Oregon in September for our wedding anniversary. We wanted to dine somewhere special and I found this place on Yelp. I went ahead a made a reservation. They serve French American cuisine. Easy to find and there is a nearby parking garage so parking is a breeze. We walked in and this restaurant is decorated so beautifully. It had a very nice, relaxing vibe. Very dark, but cozy. Had it been a bit warmer, I would have much rather sat outside on their gorgeous patio. We were seated quickly inside and we perused the menu. I decided on the King Prawn and Shiitake Risotto while my husband selected the Jaeger Schnitzel. We both enjoyed a glass of wine with dinner and I also loved my Caesars salad as it tasted so fresh. I really enjoyed my dish. I always love mushrooms in my risotto and the King Prawns were so tasty. Unfortunately, my husband did not enjoy his dish as much and he is a huge fan of German food. Our dessert was tasty and they indicated that all desserts are made in house. Service was good but not outstanding. They seemed to be a bit short staffed. This problem seems to be the norm everywhere now when you dine out.

3.5 STARS, TECHNICALLY, BUT THE HALF ISN'T AN OPTION. We dined here after my daughter and her (then fiancé) eloped. I had higher hopes. There were some things that we ordered that were really good, some that were mediocre, and some that were just meh. We were a party of 8, so there was a wide variety of tastes at the table - and I think for the most part everyone were pleased. I eat out A LOT, and I can safely say that I'm not sure I'd come back. The interior is well done, it's the right amount of dim and not super loud, which was nice. The service was good. I think I just had higher expectations when it came to the food. I ordered the schnitzel, which I ended up giving to my (new) son-in-law, because his wife (my daughter) stole his pasta (Truffle radiatory). She ordered the browned butter lobster risotto (they must have just waved the browned butter over the top of this gummy rice dish - and no way was the tiny bit of lobster fresh), which is what I ended up with (because I'm THAT mom) and - wow. let's just say I could have made this better at home. Others in the party had the filet mignon, the crispy skin chicken and the Mediterranean pasta - the chicken looked anything but crispy. We did not order dessert, because there was wedding cake to be had! The best I can say here is that it wasn't completely terrible.... but it also wasn't completely good. A decent meal at best.

Took my wife for an evening out and thought I would give Jackelope another shot. Was greeted quickly and sat at a nice table. After reviewing the menu we decided on some sea scallops as an appetizer they were cooked to perfection and the sauce was delicious. The wife had wild mushroom pasta awhile I ordered the steak au poivre (tres major). Wife loved the pasta it was very rich and flavorful. The steak was tender cooked just right at medium rare and delicious. Looking forward to going back when the bone marrow appetizer is available.

Good food. Very small restaurant, did not realize it would be that type of atmosphere. The menu is fairly small as well, minimal options. I got the pasta which was good. A little pricy for what it was. Service wasn't great and good took a long time even though we ate of 5:30.

Located on Lava Street in downtown Bend, around the corner from the Oxford Hotel and across from the DoubleTree. White table cloth dining with New American cuisine of steaks, elk, bison, fresh seafood. The entrance was unique and seemed to take you into an adventure. Inside it was a dark, serene, nicely decorated dining room filled with diners. Dined in with a party of five. Hostess and waitress were nice and accommodating with requests. Ordered: Appetizers to share: * Roasted marrow bone w/Bacon and caramelized onion jam, garlic confit, and toasted crostini - very good! * Baked Brie w/local Honey, dates, apricots, dried cranberries, and toasted almonds & grilled crostini. Who doesn't like Brie! Salad: * Caesar salad - Romaine, parmesan, and garlic croutons, with a Lemon-Anchovy and Egg Dressing, topped w/shaved Parmesan Cheese. It was plain but I liked it. Entrees ordered in the group: * Vegetarian pasta - Brown butter sage pappardelle, with a miso truffle and white wine sauce, sweet peas, asparagus, and Shiitake mushroom topped with toasted walnuts and parmesan breadcrumbs. * Seared duck breast - with a balsamic and black cherry sauce, Arugula, creamy Goat cheese polenta, with a bacon and green bean sauté. * Pan-roasted elk - creamy mascarpone Polenta, crispy Pancetta Brussel sprouts, & sweet garlic. Topped with a Blackberry and Pomegranate Bordelaise sauce. Not my entree but tried a bite and it was really good. * Filet mignon - Pan-seared prime cut Filet Mignon, Topped with French Compound Butter, Malibu Carrots, and Yukon gold garlic & parmesan smash. * NY Bison - Local sourced Bison from Pine Mountain Ranch Bend, Oregon. Soaked in duck fat for four days, grilled and served with garlic cream parmesan potatoes, cipollini onions, sautéed asparagus, with a roasted shallot and thyme sauce. We all liked our entrees and thought all was flavorful and tasty. I can only speak specifically for my bison entree which was tender, flavorful w/nice accompaniments. One star off for a mistake in one of the entrees (they apologized and prepared the desired entree) and though the food was great we didn't realize until the end of dinner that most of our entrees were lukewarm (except the corrected entree). We were all having a good time! I've seen more than one review here about lukewarm entrees. If food can be this good then it would only be better if they can improve on this point. I would definitely return to try the other entrees like Halibut cheek, King salmon, or any of their pastas. And house-made desserts like flourless chocolate cake, apple Tarte Tatin, pots de crème.

JoJo answered the phone and we laughed about how motherhood is never-ending (in a good way) and she managed to slot them into an immediate table. By the time they arrived, she had bread on the table and made them feel like VIPs (thank you lady!) Garrett came over as they were perusing the wine list and helped with selection (thank you sir!) & chatted with them for a good while. All three of them said it was the best meal they had on the trip, and my hubby told me this morning that he thinks it was the best restaurant he's ever been to & the most perfectly cooked steak! High praise indeed. They also shared (and loved) the escargot, salad with blue cheese, popovers, squid ink linguini, and the mixed grill. A lovely family-style experience. I was jealous from afar! Unfortunately, despite the med rare order, the filet was well. The other side was med rare and tough, but for $90, you kind of expect perfection. What was perfect? Brioche popups, radicchio salad (I could eat this daily for the rest of my life), salmon (mouth is watering thinking about it), corn ribs (pretty good but I won't get them again). We shared the lava cake--perfection--and the butterscotch pudding cake. Cocktails and wine were sublime. I hate to withdraw a star, but a $90 steak should be perfection. We'll be back for sure! The open kitchen is especially very cool to watch if you don't have anyone else to hang out with. The reason for the review rating, is just the quality of the food. The day before I went to RBC, and not only was it less money than this, it was much much better. This is absolutely not what I expected from a place that looks like this and cost this much. My steak was OK, but as I said, I got the same one at RBC and it blew this out of the water. Picking your knife is a cute little exercise, but after all that I would've expected my knife to at least be sharp enough to cut the steak the way I wanted it. But that's a silly thing to even get stuck on. What really bugged me was the brussels sprouts first off were just swimming in grease and sauce, they were intense, and I only had a couple spoonfuls. The other thing that really pushed this over the edge was the brisket Bao. That seemed like a cool idea, but the brisket itself was extremely basic and just in a formed square. The sauce tasted like just peanut and nothing else, and the bao itself was extremely dry. The bread service was probably my favorite part, that thing was really tasty and so was the butter. I can't remember what they said the butter specifically was, but it tasted like just butter, it wasn't special. This place just doesn't have the value for the cost for me at all with the other nice steakhouses around.

Verdict: Zydeco is an outstanding restaurant in virtually every way. No negatives to report. The place is popular - arriving just before opening on a weekday, there was a line to get in. Reservations are definitely a good idea here. Our early arrival in line allowed us to choose a good table in the back, where it wouldn't be too hectic. That too was a good idea as the place gets loud with conversation when it fills up. Music wasn't loud, just the people. The menu isn't huge but there are quite a few, varied choices. Given the meal was a bit of a splurge for us, I essentially ignored the prices, which are not trivial by any means. Fine dining entails spending money. Zydeco has a ton of reviews and as the menu apparently doesn't change, I'll just say everything we ordered was great. Cocktails too. The Bramble Down is exquisite. Service was top tier as well. Timely, attentive, professional without being stiff. The capstone to our experience involved the bill. We actually had a gift card from 2017 - nine years ago. While it certainly didn't cover the whole bill, or even half, it was a nice way to defray costs. Unfortunately, when the server ran the gift card, it showed no balance. Not sure why but perhaps over the years, the card had been erased by stray EMF. Despite that and given we provided the card receipt, the restaurant honored the card for the full amount anyway. Well done. Highly recommended.

Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. In the meantime, I remember how fun and delicious it could be to eat at The Drake.

They were simple and well-made and relatively strong. Very cute little location seating wasn't an issue, even though we didn't make reservation reservations ahead of time Just overall a very solid little spot, we got some sliders and some other little sides and everything was put together well and price right. Definitely acquired a place so probably good. We didn't bring the kids.
