    Irish coffee.

The James Joyce in Santa Barbara is a lively, casual Irish pub on State Street known for its authentic, cozy atmosphere, featuring peanut shells on the floor and eclectic decor. It is popular for live music--particularly New Orleans-style jazz on Saturdays--karaoke, and a good selection of beer and cocktails.

ooh weee! after a super fun day in Santa Barbara we stumbled across a sign for irish coffee's that drew us into the James Joyce. the floor was sprinkled with sawdust and it was not crowded at all. Felt very local. Turns out it is a local spot. The guy next to me was my waiter at another restaurant the previous night. My sis and i each got an Irish coffee. They gave us the sugar on the side so we could sweeten it to our liking (that's pretty darn cool!) Boys went with Guinness draft. love my irish coffee (i was going to have one at the hotel for a nightacap but i'm sure this was much better). i would 100% return here! it is my favorite SB bar so far.

My FAVORITE bar ever. Low key ... cozy. Great beer. And on magical nights, a band called the Ulysses S. Jasz plays. Feels like home.

Is it 18+? My friends and I would like to go to a karaoke night, but some of them are under 21.

Yeah I know this great bar but unfortunately yes it has to be 21 after 7 pm :-(

The bar itself doesn't serve food, but take-out can be reliable until 10pm.

    When does karaoke happen?

Sunday and Wednesday from 9-1 Saturday from 10:30-1

Did like the attempt at English decor, namely the phonebox hanging on the side of the bar and the usage of the Underground signage. Appreciated the (at least two) beers on tap that were imports -- couldn't quite see what they were, but they had my Guinness, so that was enough for me. (They do have a good selection of taps, including 805, another blonde, etc. Again - since I really only drink Guinness, I can't say I paid much attention.) The one thing I will say is that the atmosphere can give off a... I dunno, vibe. It's quite dark inside, even when it's moderately light out. (I called in around 7pm). Nevertheless, you can get a Guinness, so that's good enough for me. 2025: 23/100

Once the food was brought out by the "food server". Our server disappeared and never came to ensure that we all got our meals. We had to get someone to check on "one" meal that was never brought for my daughter. The server came to the table to ask what happened? He was informed of the missing meal and told us that he was going to check with the kitchen. Yup you guessed it took him forever to return to tell us that oops the kitchen was slammed and either they forgot to make the order or faced it to another table seriously who says that? The manager came to the table to apologize and said oh I'm sorry about that I'll take it off your tab. WTH that is the least you should do. Well let me comp you with some desserts, no thanks. It took them over 20 minutes to provide us with the bill. This was the worst experience I've ever had, management did not handle the situation properly. Also, this is my FIRST negative review ever. But I just had to vent because this really made me angry especially on a night when we were out to celebrate my husband's birthday with the family. Definitely will not be able to recommence as my experience was not a positive one. Ambiance was nice, I just think it was over crowded and not enough servers to handle the Sunday crowd!!!! However, by the time I got there, it was past noon and selected their daily special which was a stuffed chicken dish. Think of something like cordon bleu, white meat stuffed with 3 different cheeses and spinach, then breaded on the outside and deep fried. The dish arrives hot and sliced in 3-4 good sized pieces. Lovely aroma and optics. The chicken meat was moist and tender, the cheeses melting in harmony and each bite delivered a piece of that crispy outside. For the sides, I chose the mashed potatoes and vegetables (zucchini and carrots), both of which complemented the main perfectly well. Service was attentive, caring and friendly. This eatery has a spacious dining area and the place can get busy. Not surprising, because there are so many options on the menu (for breakfast, lunch and dinner), that there is every reason to come back, so you could try more of the vast menu.

Overall, the food was excellent, the ambiance was welcoming, and the service was outstanding. One thing we especially appreciated was how family-friendly the restaurant felt. They had old-school cartoons playing on the TVs above the bar, which was a fun touch that kept everyone entertained. One thing to know before you order: the "tapas" here are much larger than what we've experienced at traditional tapas restaurants. We ended up ordering far too much because we expected smaller, shareable portions. Fortunately, that's a good problem to have, as everything was delicious. Just keep the portion sizes in mind when ordering. The drinks were also solid. The sangria leaned a bit more toward fruit juice than wine for our taste, but the other cocktails we tried were well-balanced and enjoyable. Between the great food, generous portions, excellent service, and relaxed atmosphere, we'd definitely recommend this spot to anyone visiting Santa Barbara.
