    Irish coffee.

The James Joyce in Santa Barbara is a lively, casual Irish pub on State Street known for its authentic, cozy atmosphere, featuring peanut shells on the floor and eclectic decor. It is popular for live music--particularly New Orleans-style jazz on Saturdays--karaoke, and a good selection of beer and cocktails.

ooh weee! after a super fun day in Santa Barbara we stumbled across a sign for irish coffee's that drew us into the James Joyce. the floor was sprinkled with sawdust and it was not crowded at all. Felt very local. Turns out it is a local spot. The guy next to me was my waiter at another restaurant the previous night. My sis and i each got an Irish coffee. They gave us the sugar on the side so we could sweeten it to our liking (that's pretty darn cool!) Boys went with Guinness draft. love my irish coffee (i was going to have one at the hotel for a nightacap but i'm sure this was much better). i would 100% return here! it is my favorite SB bar so far.

Kinsella Band back to the Joyce heck yes like old times

We clearly came hungry We ordered the poke nachos, avocado egg rolls, spicy tuna crispy rice, yuzu buffalo boneless wings, crispy coconut shrimp, fries, and the prosciutto and arugula flatbread. Everything was fresh and really good, elevated bar food with lots to choose from. The spicy tuna crispy rice was probably my favorite! My sister LOVED the avocado egg rolls, which have mango in them and were definitely a fun twist. The only thing I probably wouldn't order again was the prosciutto and arugula flatbread. The prosciutto was sliced pretty thick and cooked almost like bacon, which just wasn't what I was expecting. And the margaritas!! We tried the skinny, guava, and spicy mango and ALL three were excellent. I also loved being able to split and pay the bill ourselves on the little kiosk at the table. No waiting around for the check, which is such a nice touch! Fun atmosphere, great service, good food and EXCELLENT margaritas. I would definitely come back! Only took pictures of the drinks because we were too hungry lol.

My mom's family lived on Cota St. for decades (since the 1940s), so Joe's holds a special place in our hearts. I lived there during my stint at SBCC, and during that time, it became a monthly-ish tradition for my mom and I to gorge on the blessed stuffed chicken. Now, we're both out-of-towners (shout out celebrity gentrification!) but we always make it a point to stop by Joe's when we're in the area, especially if it's a Wednesday. It's impressive this dish has maintained its quality in the 15 or so years my mom and I have dined here. That's not even considering the excellent staff or the old-school diner ambiance amid the beauty of State Street. Long live Joe's!

However, by the time I got there, it was past noon and selected their daily special which was a stuffed chicken dish. Think of something like cordon bleu, white meat stuffed with 3 different cheeses and spinach, then breaded on the outside and deep fried. The dish arrives hot and sliced in 3-4 good sized pieces. Lovely aroma and optics. The chicken meat was moist and tender, the cheeses melting in harmony and each bite delivered a piece of that crispy outside. For the sides, I chose the mashed potatoes and vegetables (zucchini and carrots), both of which complemented the main perfectly well. Service was attentive, caring and friendly. This eatery has a spacious dining area and the place can get busy. Not surprising, because there are so many options on the menu (for breakfast, lunch and dinner), that there is every reason to come back, so you could try more of the vast menu.

Not mentioning that it was an extra three dollars on top of the $13, if I chose any other side besides fries. Which I thought was a little manipulating on his part. I pulled the manager to the side and mentioned it to him, he cleaned it up and corrected it immediately very polite and forthcoming. Other than that, Service was outstanding, And I tipped accordingly. Now about the food, Burger was medium rare as I asked. A little Dry for the Cook. It would've been much better with the bone marrow butter, but they are asking an extra four dollars for that. Nice brioche, bun, secret sauce, fresh slightly grilled onions, thinly sliced fresh tomato. the only complaint I have is about the lettuce. It was old, and brownish edges in color. Fries were crispy and hot. I was also offered ranch with them when the server brought the meal out, and did not charge extra for that. I was also given a punchcard for the lunch menu with one stamp and at five stamps You get a free item from the lunch menu. Which is a great customer service touch. Restaurant was inside but open air, with a full bar and five big screen TVs playing sports. Will be back to try menu items, The bill was $14 and some change with tax, I tipped five dollars so a good burger and fries for under 20 bucks. Cheers.

Overall, the food was excellent, the ambiance was welcoming, and the service was outstanding. One thing we especially appreciated was how family-friendly the restaurant felt. They had old-school cartoons playing on the TVs above the bar, which was a fun touch that kept everyone entertained. One thing to know before you order: the "tapas" here are much larger than what we've experienced at traditional tapas restaurants. We ended up ordering far too much because we expected smaller, shareable portions. Fortunately, that's a good problem to have, as everything was delicious. Just keep the portion sizes in mind when ordering. The drinks were also solid. The sangria leaned a bit more toward fruit juice than wine for our taste, but the other cocktails we tried were well-balanced and enjoyable. Between the great food, generous portions, excellent service, and relaxed atmosphere, we'd definitely recommend this spot to anyone visiting Santa Barbara.
