Went to this place with with some co workers. We ordered drinks, a few of the drinks were made incorrectly, the wrongs drink was bought to the table. The glass did not smell good for the wine ordered, it had a funky smell, I ordered a Wine-Spitzer, that was not made properly. I was not happy with this locale. Interesting visit. Big fan of the Bay Ridge location so had to stop in here. Food is great and this shouldn't deter you from trying the place. But staff needs to be aware. Two of us (adult married couple) seated in the dining room next to screaming family kids. Asked to move to the bar so we could watch afternoon games. Bar tables are 3 small tables for 2 people and 4 or 5 tables for 6 people each. All the 'couple' tables were taken. Every 6 seater was empty. Staff had a long drawn out discussion about seating us. Eventually let us use one of the 6 seaters, but told us we'd have to get up if they were needed. 1 - No large tables were being used . That wasn't going to happen 2 - We were seated. Getting up while eating wasn't going to happen. Then we were watched to make sure we ate diligently. Advice - not every customer who wants to eat in the bar will be a party of 4 or 6. Lighten up. The lunch shift is clearly the "B" team. I came in for a quick bite today. Maybe this is just me, but I asked for a simple substitution. Just not a fry person. I wanted soup instead. So I asked the "waiter" if I could swap out. I offered to pay extra. He mumbled something about that I could swap fries for baked potato, onion rings or salad (I think) and stared at me. I didn't ask about those things, I was pretty specific that I wanted French onion soup. So I asked how big the soup portion was, thinking at 7 bucks, maybe it was pretty big. Now I know it's a pub, not windows on the world but if a simple request was above his pay grade, how about you go check with a manager? Customer service is important, take that extra 2 minute step. I started to wonder if maybe it was his first day, but basic customer service was completely lacking, so unless it was his first day ever being employed, no. The food, meh. Portions not exactly generous. And once I got my food, the waiter didn't check on me once. I was only able to get the check by luck because someone else came in to be seated. I wanted to like this place since it's around the corner from work, but as I've gotten older my tolerance for poor customer service has declined. We visited kettle black last night, had a great time- the live band was very nice, good atmosphere, bartenders were friendly and quick to get drinks out. Drinks were not over priced. I do wish the kitchen was open later. Was impressed with the door security, making sure a young man that had too much to drink was picked up by family, they got him water and one stayed with him till his family arrived, I know if that was my son I would be extremely grateful for their staff. We were sat while I was halfway done with the second. I sat down and ordered another. Waiter said "sorry we don't have that beer." I told him that this was my second one at the place. He went to check and came back confirming that they in fact did not have the beer that I had just ordered from the bar. Not that they were out of. Just that they didn't have it. After dinner I ordered another from the bar. Other than that: putting the same drink order in 2 or 3 times before you get it. Ordering pulled pork Mac and cheese but getting pulled pork sandwich. Not being able to find the waitress for a half hour when you are trying to close out and having to close out with the hostess. Just all around awful service. They do wings and beer here and they do that exceedingly well. The wings were excellent and the beer selection was also excellent. Service was also attentive, prompt and friendly. They also do burgers here and while not as good as the wings, it was still pretty good and would try it again. What don't they do well? Heating. It was cold as abandoned hope in the dining room, but that's something they can remedy easily enough and isn't a deal breaker. Excellent service, lots of tv's for watching sports and the BEST wings I've had in a long time. My friends and I had the Buffalo City and the Great Wall wings. Delicious. The bone-in wings are gluten free which was great as one of my friends is allergic to gluten. Stick with the wings though. In its young infancy on Forest Avenue in Staten Island, Kettle Black has an identity crisis. Is it a bar that serves average food or is it a bar and restaurant that serves quality food? After my latest visit, I don't think they care about food quality. A place that focuses on wings should have great wings. Sure, the sauces here are unique, but when you precook your wings and don't cook them to order, you focus on speed of delivery not quality. When you have mac and cheese as a main entree, don't give me Kraft quality in a cast iron skillet and throw different toppings if you like. Is it baked in the skillet? No, it's just pasta mixed with cheese put in a skillet. I really like the vibe here, and the service, except for one instance, has been good. I really believe they want to be the neighborhood bar and the food is secondary. Their sister restaurant Ho'Brah gets rave reviews. Kettle Black can have its own identity, but the food here is secondary. After the latest visit, I'm not in a hurry to eat there. read more
