My partner ordered the nightly special, which was a fish with Thai curry sauce, and as good as my crab cake was, I was jealous of his dish. It was so tasty! Server was AWESOME. Well, he was right on the money because man, oh man, was the Kill Devil Grill packed solid. We were told it would be a 45-minute wait when we walked over and waited for a while on the benches at the front of the restaurant. It was so cold that we eventually went into the bar and squeezed next to other folks waiting in the bar, which was also packed solid. Finally, they texted us that a table was ready, and we were seated in a booth in the middle of the dining room, so we had a great view of the hostess station and all the busy goings on. We noticed there was another mass of people waiting by a side door. We met our serve, Becca, who was one of the nicest folks we've encountered on our vacation. We went to their deep menu, and I chose a Grilled Salmon Salad ($18) with a beautifully grilled salmon fillet over mixed greens, cut corn, grape tomatoes, carrots, cukes and a basil citrus vinaigrette. I asked them to hold the included goat cheese, and they did. My wife went for a Grilled Chicken Sandwich ($15) with bacon, Jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and fries. The portions were big, and half of the salad and sandwich went back to our hotel for the next day's lunch. We decimated the fries on the spot because they were outstanding. Wife had a flounder sandwich that she enjoyed and I had the flounder & oyster platter with Yukon potatoes a succatash, very good. I really enjoyed my chicken and dumplings at the Kill Devil Grill. The broth was full of vegetables, mushrooms, large pieces of chicken and 4 large dumplings. I also love that they used a non-plastic takeout container - brilliant!! The broth could have used a little less sodium, but I may be a bit more sensitive to sodium levels than most. Yum! What an OBX gem! A diner with an extended dining room and kitchen added on, this place had one of the best crab cake sandwiches I've ever had. (Slight issue with shredded lettuce which is not my favorite, but a small thing.) The bruschetta appetizer has thick, toasted wedges of bread with a generous bowl of chopped onion and tomatoes that have been soaking in a balsamic reduction. You spoon on as much or little as you want for an amazing bite. Steak lunch with fries was some of the best steak we've had, definitely the best outside a fancy steakhouse. Seasoned and cooked to perfection. Staff were friendly and attentive. Desserts were delicious. (We had key lime pie and strawberry shortcake.) Wow this place was great! It was so packed. We stopped in at lunch and I just couldn't wait the 30 mins to eat so we left. Then we came back for dinner and it was 1.5 hrs wait but thankfully I wasn't hungry yet so we sat it out. We went to the bar and got a couple of drinks, I got the painkiller which was fantastic! So I ordered another. The staff was so friendly and we were able to snag a couple seats at the bar before our table was ready. So we took that. I ordered the scallop special which came with mashed potatoes. It was good but I thought the portion was a little small. My husband had the shrimp pasta from the regular menu and I was able to try that. That was fantastic! It was several large shrimp in a yummy red tomato sauce. I've waited over a year to write this review to allow the emotions to cool down. During the summer of '24, I was planning my wedding. I was living in OBX at the time, my mother in law was a regular at this restaurant and built a rapport and a relationship with Jenn Crossman, a bartender, and Brett, Babick the owner of the restaurant. Jenn and my MIL were talking about the wedding and she disclosed she did wedding planning. We met up with Jenn and decided to move forward with her as our wedding planner. We went in for dinner and drinks one day where we chatted with Jenn and discussed needing a caterer, Brett came up and said "we would LOVE to cater your wedding" we got very excited since we loved the restaurant. Brett and the cooks coordinated a food tasting with a totally custom menu for no charge. While there, Brett tells us, "We are not in the business of making money off of weddings, we are going to charge the cost of food and service and nothing else." I want to take a minute to thank the staff for facilitating that and doing so much work for that tasting day. I appreciate that more than you know and apologize that you have to deal with this man every day. We received the invoice around 8/21 for our 9/9 wedding and it was $4,025 (before tip) to feed 30 people. Including a $700 fee for on-site service, which we never asked for and specifically asked if we can pick up and do the service ourselves. That was not an option for them. That's is $134.16 per person. Our menu consisted of basic foods, wings, fried pickles, salad, pigs in a blankets, etc. (we had a casual backyard wedding) My dad began discussion with Brett to come to an agreement on cost. I found out from Jenn on 8/29, 10 days before my wedding, that Brett pulled out. He ghosted my dad after telling him "it's not worth it if we don't make at least $3,500" so much for not being in it for the money. (I believe that is the amount he said but the communication was kept between him and my father to reduce stress for me right before my wedding) I understand that money is a necessary part of business but $134.16 per person is ridiculous and price gouging. He refused to provide us with a cost breakdown, how much each item costs. That is standard practice for invoices. I want to take a minute to thank the staff for facilitating that and doing so much work for that tasting day. I appreciate that more than you know and apologize that you have to deal with this man every day. I get that the wedding industry is messy and is determined to over charge you for everything. But don't OFFER to cater my wedding, tell me you're not going to over charge, and then over charge and ghost me a week before my wedding. I no longer support Kill Devil Grill or anything that has to do with Brett Babick. We had dinner here for my fiancées birthday and both left feeling like we had one of the best dinner experiences we have had. Ellie, our server, was fantastic and super fun. The food was wonderful, I had the Blackened Mahi special, which was 10/10. We sat in the bar area which was a bit louder than the dining area, but the music they played was upbeat and fun, and everyone in the place was having a great time. Now for the food, the cheesesteak rolls are a MUST! They were absolutely delish and everyone on the table loved them. For the entrees, I had the chef's special which was blackened wahoo with grits. It was really well balanced in flavor. My partner had the BBQ burger, which was pretty good but not necessarily great. For dessert, we ordered a rum cake and key lime pie. Our favorite food stop on our OBX trip. It does get busy, so be prepared to wait on weekends, but it is well worth it. It is diner-style and cutely decorated, but nothing special in terms of ambiance. Clean, a bit crowded, but it feels nostalgic in some ways. Service was impeccable. I have loved Kill Devil Grill for years, but today I was really disappointed and didn't stay to eat. My husband and I got there about 15 minutes before they were to open. At 11:30, opening time, we got in line with other early arrivals, expecting them to open the doors. They didn't. The line kept growing and we kept waiting. A guy who worked there came out and went back in a few times, with his head down and no word for all of us waiting patiently. Finally around 11:43, we gave up and left. One guy in line said, "if the owner was here and saw that they weren't open, he'd be pissed". I sure hope so. I use a cane and it isn't easy for me to stand and wait, but I plan accordingly, get there early before there's a big line, and that usually works out fine. But if they don't open at opening time, it's hard. So today we left and went somewhere else. Bummed. read more

We have been here for 5 days! Honestly the best food! Had the daily special of Grilled Wahoo with avocado and grilled corn and grits! Our daughter had the salmon citrus salad and our grandson said he loved it! The wait was the only downside!
