I haven't been to the Knotstop, but I did get a free massage from them this past weekend when they were at Stingaree. I have to say, I wouldn't even know how the massage was because the whole time I just wanted it to be over so I could run to the bathroom and throw up. I told my boyfriend (who went to school for massage) that I got a massage at the club and it made me really sick, and he said it's like, against the rules of massage to work on people that have been drinking. I love this place. Not only is it in a super convenient location in Hillcrest (the strip mall where TJ's is- and there's no shortage of parking), but the quality of massage you can get here is the same or better than at swankier places. Now, this place is cute for sure- it's got the requisite soft candles and cucumber-infused water-- but don't expect your fancy magnolia pre-massage bath here. Nadine and Sze have said everything important, so I'll just add this note-- Shelly is amazing with deep tissue/therapeutic massage. I've had this horrible pulled muscle in my neck/shoulder area that's made it impossible to even turn my head to the left (a problem when you're trying to switch lanes on the freeway!). Ricardo is AMAZING and always manages to untangle the mess in my shoulders. His work shows he is highly knowledgeable, experienced and well trained. I have had a lot massages in my time, having worked at a massage therapy school, and also from having chronic back pain. I have to say you are intuitive and know how to customize a massage. My DT massage was near perfect. My only complaint is that I didn't book 2 hours with you instead of 1. You read my back and applied perfect amount of pressure without making me tense up in pain. You understand the nuance of Deep Tissue massage very well, unlike a lot of therapists who think extreme pain and bruises are part of a DT massage- err improper technique people. Since switching my insurance, I have lost my chiropractic coverage. In need of some serious treatment, I opted for a deep tissue massage, boy did I need it! When you first walk in, they have a lounge to relax in while you wait to go into your massage room. The lounge is nice, comfy and relaxing. Once you get into the room, a personal level of ambiance and comfort is found. From relaxing music, to soothing aromas, this was very good for relaxing and mellowing out. My masseuse Julie was very helpful. I knew where my problem spots were, but didn't know how to go about curing that. She made some recommendations and was really right on the money with them. After an hour that went by way too quick, my back, neck and legs felt great. I thoroughly enjoyed my massage and my experience here. This is a place I will definitely be coming back to. Unfortunately, I wish I could afford to come back weekly, but since I can only do once a month or so, I will be ok with that knowing that I am getting quality service here. read more

After reading the reviews, and after running the Disneyland half marathon, I thought a visit to the Knot Stop was in order. I called and booked an appointment for a 60 minute deep tissue massage. Upon entering, I was kindly greeted and asked to fill out a questionnaire about current needs, issues, etc. The waiting area I found to be tranquil and serene. Once inside the room, my masseuse Jenny went to work on my aching muscles. I usually have males work on me as they seem to provide deeper pressure, but I was pleasantly surprised. She was able to get out knots in my back when others were unsuccessful. The only reason I wouldn't rate this 5 stars is that it's adjacent to a pilates studio, with hardwood floors, and no soft fabrics to help with the noise. You could hear laughter and loud voices echoing during my massage. But after about ten minutes, I kind of lost all that due to the relaxation coma I was entering. I've been to dozens of spas/resorts/etc. but I have to say for the money, the Knot Spot is a great massage experience. read more

I've been a member at the Knotstop for about 9 years now, so that should tell you a lot! The front desk staff is ALWAYS friendly and their hours of operation make it easy to get a massage at any time, even at short notice. I love their waiting room which is more like a Zen, relaxation room to prepare you for your hour or two of relaxation. Their masseuses are very interested in giving you the massage you want and need. I have too many favorite masseuses to name but they are all very good at what they do. I've even gone there just to purchase gifts in the retail section in the front. From candles to books and gift certificates, the Knotstop is such an awesome place to go! I've referred at least 15 friends here and they love it too! Give them a try! I love The Knot Stop. I have been going here for a number of years and I am always pleased. They have a great massage of the month club where for either $59 or $69 you can get an hour massage or deep tissue. You can check out the profiles of the masseurs online and I think you can book online as well. Pros: Pretty easy to get an appointment. Nice environment, great staff, fair price Cons: The awful parking lot that is the Hillcrest Ralph's parking lot. My advice is to leave a lot of time to find parking, because the last thing you want to do is feel rushed for a massage. If you get there early, there is a great waiting area where you can begin to wind down before your massage. read more

I really need to set aside some cash for a massage fund. Because the one time I went here, I was a very relaxed and happy camper when I came out. I have herniated discs in my back, and the woman who gave me the massage was very mindful of that. My discs were not aggravated at all! The whole atmosphere was very relaxing, and her technique was awesome. I nearly fell asleep, and the hour passed by very quickly. They had a "March Madness" promo where they had a discount for certain times on certain days - and I was going to go back then. I could have, since at the time I was unemployed and had the free time. However, I was...unemployed, and even with the discount...money was just too tight for me at the time. I can't recall the name of the guy on the phone, but he was very friendly. I saw Jonathan. I'm officially obsessed with him now. So since my boyfriend went and bought himself all sorts of fancy schmancy shaving goodies just weeks before his birthday and foiled my original (and somewhat uncreative) plans for a gift, the wheels in my head started to turn as a coworker was handing out little brochures for this place.... My boy does gnarly manly work and he's always got aches and pains, so I made us a Side by Side appointment for a surprise birthday present (Ok so a present for me too, but hey what else would I do while he was getting a massage?). Aside from our massages being absolutely divine ( I mean really, you've got to be sent from heaven to make me feel that good), the entire staff was so accommodating and nice. I called and got their voicemail, and received a call back within 15 minutes. They answered tons of questions for me, as I had never had any sort of massage before. I was also not 100% sure on being able to get my boy there on the element of surprise, and the gal I spoke to was super nice giving me info on if I should have to cancel, etc. I can't remember the woman who was my boys therapist, but I know he was like jello afterward, so props to her! Let me start this by saying that I have been having an extremely difficult time with my body lately, especially my joints. I've been going to the doctor repeatedly, dealing with my nightmare of an insurance company, had x-rays, been put on medications that I can't even function on all because my joints hurt unbelievably.. Until yesterday!! I went in to use a gift certificate a friend gave me for my birthday for a deep tissue massage and was paired up with Dani. I've had massages in the past, so I wasn't expecting any miracles, just wanted to relax. I explained my trouble, being told I have fibromyalgia and tendonitis in both my wrists. When I went in, I could only tip my left wrist back by about 20 degrees, rather than a full 90. She was probably the strongest masseuse I've ever had and extremely good at finding the right pressure for me, also using a wonderful minty oil that relaxed my muscles even further. After she spent a good amount of time on my shoulders, forearms and wrists, the massage went as normal, ended, I got up and had some of their tea in their lounge and I went to leave, grabbing the door handle with my left hand carelessly, which usually would have sent sharp pain up to my elbow and numbness into my outer fingers.... except it didn't happen. I was able to open the door without any pain at all! I got in my car and took it easy, on my wrist, still not doing anything much with it, thinking it might be temporary. Well it's the next day and there is NO MORE PAIN in my hands, wrists, arms, or shoulders! As a web developer, my hands are my tools and this is the first time in months that I've been able to work without shooting pain up my arms in several years. I really like this place. My back has been giving me problems s I decided to call in the day and see if I can get an appointment right after work. They fit my in at the perfect time of 645pm. I got a male therapist, which I dont care since Im not picky on that sort of thing. The massage was great. He did a combination of techniques. From deep, to soothing swedish to pressure points, to stretching me a bit. Man it felt good. And $49 for first timers is a great price. Even at $59 its still such a good deal. The place itself is in a shopping center inside the pilates place next to Starbucks. Its pretty quiet and small but very comfortable and relaxing. Im giving it a 4 for now, but Im gonna keep coming back. I will bump it up to 5 if I get a consistant good experience. Oh, another great thing about this place is that its open late everyday....till 9pm even on sat and sun which is such a convenience for people with a regular work schedule. read more

I arrived at the location right on time, at 3:30. I checked in, went into the waiting area before meeting my masseuse. We talked about any issues I was having and how I normally like the pressure of my massage. Then I changed, he came back in and the massage started. HOWEVER - when I looked at the clock, I noticed my massage still ended at 4:30 - even though there must have been 10 - 15 mins of preparation. I need to talk to them about keeping the length of the actual massage at 60 mins, not just ending at a set time! Otherwise, they should check me in early. Massages are a favorite holiday gift for my staff, and my wife and I typically indulge a couple of times a year. I have been pretty loyal to the spa at Paradise Point until this year, when I switched up to the Knot Stop (largely based on the positive reviews here). Today was the first time my wife and I had a chance to go get one ourselves. We got a couples' massage that easily rivaled the quality we were used to at Paradise Point. The interior at Knot Stop isn't as swank, nor is there a steam room, shower, and pool to enjoy, but the massage itself was fantastic. The mission of the Knot Stop is to make this type of indulgence a more regular part of people's lives (to that end, they schedule massages all day, 7 days a week), and after our experience today, I can't think of a good reason not to make them a monthly ritual. read more

I love knot stop! I don't have any particular favorite masseuse, I've never had a bad experience with any of them. The only reason I don't rate knot stop with 5 stars is because my massages are never the full 90 min that I purchase. I'm always brought back to the massage room at my exact appointment time, but by the time I change and the massage starts, it's already 15-20 min past my apt time. So say my apt is at 1 pm. My massage actually ends up getting started at 1:17 ish and still ends at 2:30 but it actually should end at 2:47 since I booked a 90 min. Frustrating. I really hope they find a way this can be fixed and prevented! Other than that... It's my favorite place to get a deep tissue :) read more

I had a "Back on track" massage this evening with Karen, and WOW!! I was impressed!! I have had massages before- but nothing like this. I can't tell you what Karen was doing to my back, but it felt incredible. She did a mixture of relaxation techniques and working with pressure points. I appreciate that Karen asked me questions in the beginning, and made me feel welcome and cared for. She was extremely knowledgable and made sure to check-in with the pressure with me. I had a wonderful massage with Shelly Meeks. She does a great job in connecting and building a relationship with the client, while also listening to their needs! Shelly does a great job of curtailing the message to the client's needs and focusing specifically on what they want but also listening to the client's body. She paid great attentions to my shoulder, neck and sub-occipital muscles (back of skull and below) She is a gifted healer and would recommend her highly! Shelly is extremely gifted and talented with both massage, but also "being with" the client. I came to get a massage to relax emotionally and she definitely was a facilitator in that way. I called day of hoping for availability for at least an hour massage and they got me in a little over an hour after I called... perfect! *chefs kiss* My massage therapist was Crossly and I asked for the muscular therapy massage and wow! He has a firm touch but my oh my I felt like new person after. Exactly what I was looking for. I have had some injuries since my last massage and this was the best thing I have ever felt in the prime spots that bother me. The front desk also discounted my service because I had not been in, in so long. Another score and super kind of them. ANDDDD, since it was Easter, they had these little Easter eggs in a basket up front with a piece of candy and a little raffle fortune inside and mine said "Jewelry" and I got to pick this cute bracelet out of a selection of jewelry. I came across the reviews for this place a while back (thanks yelp!!) and bookmarked their site for a future massage. Well my husband suggested yesterday morning that we should go get massages in the evening. So immediately I thought of giving this place a try. I figured they wouldn't have any openings at such short notice - especially for two people. To my surprise they were able to get us both in at the same time that evening. We arrived early and filled out of forms and off we went. My husband's massage therapist was Katie and I had Elizabeth. We both got the 1 hour firm swedish massage (an awesome value at $49 for first time clients). We both we amazed and impressed - the best massages we have ever had! Both Katie and Elizabeth listened to what we wanted and were extremely skilled in their massages. It was so much more than the pansy fluff massages we have had before at other places! The only somewhat of a negative is that there is a pilates studio in the same space and we could both hear the noise at times. We will definitely be returning for more massages!! UPDATE 3/10: I had a firm swedish from Lauren last week and she was amazing! The only unfortunate thing is that we had to go to their upstairs suite for the massage and it must have extremely thing walls (as compared to downstairs) because for about 45 min of the hour massage I could hear the MT next door talking to his client the ENTIRE time. So frustrating since she gave an amazing massage! They are getting docked a star (it would be 1/2 a star but we all know that can't happen)! read more

I guess I'm not as easily impressed by the rest of these yelpers. I've actually had several non-pleasant experiences at this place. Yes, some of their therapists are great... but... I once scheduled an appointment with someone I hadn't seen before. I specifically asked to not have this one other woman because of her name. Kind of stupid, I know... but I had a roommate with that name and it just gave me a bad impression of people with that name. Trite, yes... Human, also yes. So I show up, wait for the therapist and it turns out the girl I was booked with couldn't make it and they failed to tell me. Honestly, I wouldn't have booked with this lady because I just had a feeling it wouldn't be a good match for me. I got her anyways. It matters to me. I didn't like the girls energy. She was too harsh. Yes, it's nice to be able to get in quickly but let's at least inform clients when things change. Gordon is great but I've had a guy there who felt creepy. I've since found a guy with a private practice who is AWESOME and more affordable than this place. I also think it's rude they don't have a place to write on a tip and you have to tell the receptionist. read more

That being said, I've had my fair share of bad massages and was slightly skeptical about going to The Knot Shop given that it's basically located in a strip mall. However, being new to the area I'm in an adventurous and open minded state. I've been here several times and have been thoroughly impressed with the place itself, the professional and friendly staff, the affordable price, as well as the downright AMAZING massages I've had here (seriously some of the best I've ever had). The place itself is very unassuming but don't let that disuade you. It's clean, pleasantly decorated and the service is top notch. I've never had a problem making an appointment either which can sometimes be an issue. Tip: be sure to ask about "the rub club" where you get discounts on monthly massages. Came here for a 90 minute runner's massage and it was absolutely amazing. I told the workers at the front desk that I wanted someone to work on me pretty tough and not take it too easy...they looked at each other and recommended Sergey. Sergey was exactly what I was looking for...he worked out the knots perfectly - taking me to the point that I could not take much more, but never too much. He responded very well to nonverbal cues and targeted all the muscles that were ailing me. I felt damn good afterwards (a little sore) but totally rejuvenated. This place goes beyond just A-OK because of the fact that they are open 7 days a week and into the late hours (9pm). whoooot. I hurt my back on Sunday. Pulled a muscle. In pain. help! On a Sunday? omg... I combed yelp to see what was open and the options were bleak. I was hoping to find a chiropractor initially because I knew it was bad - but no luck there. So then i started searching for massage. Nothing near the house... but after reading the reviews (not to mention i was near desperation at this point) - I called Knot Stop. Was able to get an appointmet for 6pm. Whoot. I got there a little early, and glad I did too beause parking was UGH. It shares a lot with Ralphs and Traders Joes so it was just plan UGH - even for a Sunday evening. went around the lot a couple of times before I finally got a spot. First off, Knot Stop is HUGE. rooms up top as well. nice. The waiting room was small and pleasant. I did notice that my therapist was a few mins late in getting to me, but when my service was completed, i was happy to see that it was certainly past the hour to make up for it. Thanks! I had Michelle. she was really sweet and made sure I was comfortable with everything she was doing. I told her about my back issue and she adjusted accordingly knowing that was someone injured. I typically don't fall asleep during massages because I am not really a "massage" person.. however... once we got to the neck and shoulder part - i was out! heheheh. ahhhhhhh. just what i needed. Felt so much better leaving the place and helped me sleep better that night before i could get to a chiropractor the next day. I've been here 3 times and had a different "therapist" each time. There are three things I require for a massage to be deemed good: 1. Quiet atmosphere 2. NO TALKING 3. Rub HARD! and the Knot Stop has failed me in these categories. The rooms here are smallish- one guy was sipping on his Starbucks mid massage, CHEESY! The rooms don't have much soundproofing (IE. I could hear doors to other rooms opening and closing) and the massages I've had haven't been very deep. So, If you want something on the fly, or don't want a hooker showing up at your door, this place is a safe bet. If you want a quiet, relaxing experience with some good thumb action, go elsewhere! read more

I was glad to have found a professional massage place in Hillcrest that is devoid of the colloquial "happy endings." The atmosphere here is calm and welcoming, and the mint/cucumber water is especially tasty before and after getting a massage. The staff here are very professional and, after completing a brief intake form, I was whisked away by my massage therapist for the first deep tissue massage of my life. Oh. My. Goodness. It was amazing. Sure, the massage hurt a tiny bit, but the end result was a fixed lower back and better posture. My therapist was especially attentive in giving me some aftercare tips and suggested exercises to help with my shoulders. This past weekend my husband and I were in San Diego for the Rock 'n Roll Marathon. We knew we wanted to get massages after the marathon (at least 2 hours after) to help ease the pain, so I checked out a few places on Yelp. I pretty much agree with all the reviews for the Knot Stop, especially for the $49-hour long massage for first time guests. The place was clean, the staff was friendly, the prices were easy on the wallet, and the massage therapists were knowledgeable. Gilda did my massage and she was awesome! I really felt relaxed and enjoyed my massage. She asked me about any problem areas, asked me if the pressure was okay, and even told me where she felt the most knots after the massage for future massages. Gilda even gave me some tips on some easy exercises I can do at home to prevent knots in my arms. She honestly helped me feel comfortable throughout the process. My husband had his massage from Ed who really took some time on his feet, which took some rough pounding for 26.2 miles. He said that Ed really knew what he was doing and has been in the business for almost 10 years! For $10 extra you can add aromatherapy with many different scents to choose from. This place is great, especially because it's not stuffy or snobby like some of those high end "foo foo" places. I'm definitely going back when I'm in town! read more

I would do 3.5 if I could. It was a great massage, the ambiance was totally spa-y and great. However, my masseuse was a full blown nutter. I could have stopped him at the beginning of the massage by saying I didn't want to talk but I didn't. And I was treated to some really insane stuff. Including him referring to his girlfriend's genitals in a totally old school, slang-y term that almost caused me to choke. That being said, I bought my boyfriend a gift certificate and plan on going back but asking for a different masseuse. Again, I think the whole thing could have been averted--I could have said, "Oh, I don't like talking" but instead I heard about his aborted porn career and his girlfriend's...ladyparts. EDIT: I went back 3 more times, had different therapists each time and had great massages each time, so I'm making this a 4 star-er. read more

I got my massage with Jose. He was very good with loosening up the tight spots and had excellent technique. If you are in a position where you need a good relaxion massage or you are a runner looking to losen up some tight spots, you won't be disappointed. I had NESTOR, who was so friendly and made sure I was comfortable right off the bat. Let me tell you, before the first 10 minutes passed, I could not wait to book another. He was THE BEST. I absolutely hate to pay good money and end up with a foo-foo wimpy massage. He was strong but not rough, actually took the time to ask how the pressure was, and encouraged me to "just relax" There was not one part of me that was not relaxed when he was done. Time for my monthly deep tissue fix and pulled muscle in a shoulder brought me to Knot Stop today. I called in the morning and I asked for a therapist who specializes in deep tissue and shoulder problems. It was hard to get the names out of the person on the phone but finally I settled on a female therapist for the same day, evening appointment. I'm not big on massages, but I'm not small on them either. I've had three professional rub downs in my lifetime. One many moons ago when I was still athletic and had an injury, one in Thailand because, well, I was in Thailand, and one at The Knot Stop because my old job was extremely stressful. The Knot Stop delivered the best of the three. It was an hour of focused, pure awesome. It was clear to me that my masseuse knew exactly what she was doing and had a very strong sense of how the body works. She was able to realize where I had injuries or tension immediately without my saying a thing. I don't remember how much it cost, but keep in mind a tip is nearly obligatory and well deserved. It's definitely a bit decadent if you're on a budget, but sometimes you have to treat yourself in order to get back out there and back to work. I almost forgot, the service, aside from the massage itself, is also great. There is a very zen waiting area, they give you some infused, relaxing water (or was it tea? One spring day, on day three of a particularly monstrous brand of migraine, I caught sight of The Knot Stop sign. I walked in, desperate. Told the nice gentlemen behind the counter that I needed someone experienced with migraines. They suggested Shelly and fortunately, she had an opening later that day. Shelly is magical. Really! I knew it from the first time she put her hands on my head. Her technique is intuitive and skilled. She's very strong, but tender. Shelly is the only person I let touch me when I have a migraine. I would pay for 60 minutes of just her facial massage. Through my ~monthly (I am a member) visits (some of which she could probably bill me for therapy!) over the past couple of years, we have become friends and I fully trust her to manage my pain and to listen to me vent on occasion. If you suffer from neck pain, migraines, TMJ or just want a really thoughtful, deep-tissue massage, go see Shelly! PS: For facials, TKS carries/uses organic Éminence skin care products, which I love so much, I purchase to enjoy at home.
