I arrived and had to wait about an hour before my colleague arrived. It is a beautiful atrium that screams elegance. I grabbed a seat at the fairly crowded bar and figured I'd order an old fashioned or two while I waited. They gave me water and a little dish of a nut mixture with my drink (I added a mid-level Uncle Nearest for the bourbon). The drink was so good I ordered a second one! But I was shocked when it was time to cash out and move over to the reserved table with my colleague. 2 old fashioned drinks = $72! At the table, I had a couple of appetizers. I got the sliders (they come with a side of fries) and the wings. You get 2 sliders and 6 wings, and that's another almost $60. Expensive? Yes! Delicious? Yes! The service at the bar and table were both attentive, which was another plus. I almost took off a star for the prices, but then I remembered: this is the Waldorf Astoria! High prices should be expected. Anything less would be uncivilized...

Come to learn - multiple other tables had complained as well.... They offered us another table but it was not conducive for an intimate feeling... so we risked staying hoping they'd wrap it up. The manager was lovely and poured us 4 glasses of prosecco as an apology. The food is spectacular- lots of incredible seafood options included in the 3 course $65 RW menu and not one smell of fishy-ness. The sauces and execution are truly delicious- I've lived in the Mediterranean and in France and this is the real deal. Tons of gluten free dairy options which is so amazing. Service was nice and pleasant - not mind blowing. The manager also comped an additional incredible desert and I appreciated that. By the time we got our check at 9:45, another table of 10 was seated at the center of restaurant... and the noise level started to ratchet up. I looked at our check and realized the extra desert that was comped was actually charged to us ... and it was a $22 desert... obviously asked for a refund which they obliged. The establishment is a year old and I think it's having a small identity crisis still - it's stunning inside with an elegant feel and some people dressed in an impeccably classy manner ... and others ... dressed as though they're headed to the club or a pop concert... by no means should a restaurant with such elevated dining where apps are $20 plus and entrees $40 plus feel like you're having to yell at your dinner companions at 7:30pm. Perhaps they need two seatings & advertise that from 9:30pm onwards large parties and noise levels will exponentially increase .. Coffee - out of stock for cold brew and horchata latte. Only had espresso and milk. Had iced latte but was basically just milk since brought out in a large glass. I had a hurtful and disturbing experience at Riggs. I (a black woman) walked in a few minutes…read moreearlier than my friend (a white man) and asked if there was a table for two for brunch today (Saturday 26 Sep 2026). The hostess (black, young with big Afro--identifying her in case management cares to follow up) told me that they only seat guests with reservations (my friend and I had spontaneously decided to meet for brunch so we had not made a reservation). So I went back out and waited for my friend, so that we could decide where else to try. He arrived a few minutes later but came in from the other side of the building so I didn't see him. When I called him to see when he would arrive, he told me he was already in and was seated at a table...by the same hostess. So, even in the year 2026, the 60s and 70s are still present at Riggs Cafe. We proceeded with our brunch, but in the back of my mind this issue was still percolating. When the same hostess came to our table to bring the dessert menu after the main dish, she never said anything to me, neither apologised nor tried to explain. It may very well be that this is not a personal call that she made to turn me away and accept my white friend, instead she may be instructed by management, so perhaps none of this is her fault and she may have been just following orders to do this. I guess I will never know whether the racist approach was a staff or management choice. Be it as it may, I am struck by the existence of old-fashioned racism in in this day and age... in liberal DC. Neither is this in any way classism (not that that would be any less disturbing), both my friend) and I are in senior positions in international organisations with high incomes. So it is not like I would be screened out because I looked like a homeless person who couldn't be conceived of as a paying customer. Before posting this review, I made a phone call to Café Riggs. The person who picked up the phone claimed that he is an assistant manager and that I should relay the incident to him. I did, and found the reaction rather disappointing, to say the least. He just just said he is sorry about my experience, and asked me to come back for another brunch to have a better experience. No indication whatsoever that this would be treated as a serious manner and that they would follow up with the staff involved. And even better would be if they had taken down my number to follow up with me to inform me what steps they took to ensure that their staff act in a professional and non-discriminatory manner. But there was sadly none of this whatsoever, which makes me again more concerned that the turning away of black guests who come in without a reservation while welcoming white guests without a reservation may be a managerial strategy that they instruct their staff to pursue. Riggs Cafe's actions left me deeply sad and upset.
