    Topnotch!

Had a much better experience this time around. The fish and chips were spectacular, and all the other dishes we ordered exceeded expectations. The only noticeable drawback was a shortage of staff, though we were informed about this in advance. Lastly, the views of the ocean and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport were priceless.

Honestly I was quite surprised at the quality of the food here. I did not expect it to be this good. But the salmon dish was just amazing. They did run out of several appetizers which was disappointing. They also charge 3% for use of credit cards.

EDIT: ( this is the edited part. Woke up this morning to a poorly written and incorrect evaluation of my review from the management,Ted C, ignoring several of my comments as evident by his comments to me--and to my personal message box, not in view of you, the readers. So I am adding a screenshot of it here, and downgrading from a 3 to a one star review because clearly the management is poor to non existent, not showing any leadership to their staff and evidently not wanting to make things right or use it as a way to improve their operations. THE MILITARY DESERVES BETTER THAN THE LANAI based on that response to me. Also, the server had no idea that there was an issue with the edamame, that they were brought to us by another server and explained to us why they were delivered after our first entry was received. Also, as stated below, we had to wait for quite a while before we saw her to request our check. Furthermore, I didn't mention that our female server was unprofessionally dressed, wearing ripped up, cut off shorts with a hoodie wrapped around her waist the entire time; not what I would expect at a lunch that cost us $109.76.) On Joint Base Hickman Pearl Harbor, so you need military clearance to enter. Had been here 10 years ago when it was Sam Choy's, and had a great experience. Unfortunately, the reviews now for The Lanai are not so glowing and I agree. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated on the side closest to the beach/ bar with a canvas roof and not the nicer side on the right ( main dining area), even though there were other customers there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our server never introduced herself nor was not really attentive. We ordered drinks: the sangria was good, and made with a different wine than in the description as they " ran out." Hubby enjoyed his Mai tais. We ordered edamame which were good, although we received them after our entries as they weren't cooked properly before they were served. The Lanai garlic shrimp dish was delicious, reminiscent of Giovanni's. The rice was eh, even with seasoning on it, but the steamed vegetables were very good. Still hungry, we ordered a second entry, the Island Catch whitefish which was very good. No dessert was ordered; had to call the server over for our check. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A bonus: awesome view of HNL's 8-R, the Reef Runway.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] ( sadly, won't be back to this restaurant unless there are significant changes)

We were out for a walk and I didn't even know this place existed. Super chill beach vibe ambience. Awesome outdoor covered seating. Such a cool place to chill, beach view and you can also see the planes take off. We only had a drink, as we hadn't planned knowing this place was here. Service was chill and attentive. Love the hangout vibes. I got the drink special and oh was it yummy. It reminded me of being a kid and going to the store to get the watermelon candy with chili lollipops. The right amount of sweet and spice. Now we know of this little place close to home with a good view and good drinks. So next time I will try some bites!

    Chicken and waffles with fries

The service from our server was great. She welcomed us, took our drink order, then later, our food order. She also mention 5 items that weren't available on the menu. The issue was the timing of our order and the food. She was apologetic that our order was taking longer than normal. I ordered the chicken and waffles from the special brunch menu. Unfortunately, it didn't look like what was shown on the menu. The dish fell short of expectations and the overall experience was underwhelming. I was not expecting chicken fingers that you find in the frozen section and Eggo waffles. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's disappointing that a prime location with great views doesn't match the menu.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This restaurant services military service men and women and their families who are usually not from Hawaii. This is another opportunity to sell Hawaii, our cuisine, and friendly service. It should match the view. I hope this helps The Lanai's management to do better.

We've tried to eat here multiple times. The hostesses aren't the most friendly, and theres always a wait even if it's not busy. During dinner service they won't allow you to sit at the bar to wait for your table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's cool to see planes and jets taxi on the runway with a nice view of the ocean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Today was a good experience. I have been here when it was 0 stars, but today they had most of the menu items we wanted (were out of cheese curds) and the bartender was attentive.

Yikes. Plenty Karens in these reviews. Came in for lunch severely hungover. Liliana and Katie were absolutely amazing. They went out of their way to make me feel welcome as I had never been there before. Also personalized service and cocktails tailored to help my hangover. Amazing. Fried pickles were awesome as well. They are usually soggy at other places but were super crispy here and the chipotle ranch was top-tier. 10/10 would recommend. ([[HIGHLIGHT]]Oh and the view was great as well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]])

After golf refreshments with a view
    Wesley T.

This place was just OK. The beer was cold (best part), the service was OK and the food was just OK. We came here after golf because it was convenient. Nice place right on the beach. We ordered one pitcher of beer, chicken quesadilla and pork nachos. The view was the best part, right on the beach breathing in the ocean breeze. The beer was cold but the food was just OK. The chicken quesadilla was good but the pork nachos were meh. I probably wouldn't come back here. The prices were not cheap and the food not great.

*** Do not eat here during renovations. *** First of all, I had no idea they were going through renovations. I came in the bar side as I have for years. No one ever mentioned that the kitchen was closed or that the food was gas station quality. I found out it was closed because I looked on Yelp to see when the menu changed. I have been eating here off and on since 2016. The experience is usually fairly positive. I no longer spend much time on the base but thought it would be a nice spot to chat with a friend. By the time we realized what was happening, there was no time to course change to a new restaurant. Service was initially friendly, but our server disappeared by the end of the meal. The nachos were uncannily similar to what we sold at the gas station I worked at in college. They also didn't include the advertised salsa and sour cream. My friend's sandwich was in a plastic container in the fridge. Her Caesar salad was nothing more than lettuce and dressing, no croutons or Parmesan. Our drinks were ok. Hers was missing the muddled cucumber. For $30+ per person, the value was poor. Also extremely unimpressed with the super rude and entitled manager response to someone's yelp review that stated the price and quality of food is subpar for this style restaurant. If you can't provide a quality product, don't serve food. It's that simple. Two stars for the view.

Inside Old Timey (sorry I bit it)
    Chelsea S.

Another dine in conveniently located for Hickam/Pearl Harbor folks. Came here for lunch with some coworkers and sat on the outside, which is very nice and pleasant. Ambiance was definitely relaxed and chill. I got the Old Timey Burger that's supposedly partnered with Slater 50/50. They did not ask how I wanted the burger to be cooked, so I ended up with well done, which was fine. It wasn't overdone...but maybe I should have asked to cook it medium or something. Overall, the burger was alright. Nothing particularly special. The fries were not fresh, which was kind of a buzz kill. Actually, the worst offender was the beer. It as flat AF. I know, I should have asked for another one but I was so turned off, any beer would not have sufficed at that point. (The beer was the Lavaman Red Ale.) Didn't try other coworkers dishes but it didn't look all that great. Looked very ordinary. Also, no one raved about their food either. Prices were typical dine in prices (~$15+). No deals here! But they apparently have Happy Hour, so maybe come during then for a slight discount. Definitely not somewhere I'll be telling all my friends and family about. Maybe I'll give it another shot if coworkers have no where else to eat at Hickam or Pearl Harbor. But sadly, I will not be driving here on my own.

Is it a good place to hold a wedding ceremony and reception?

Perhaps a *very* low-key, casual wedding. The view is nice and the food is decent but as far as view obstruction control- well- there is none. There's a grassy lawn behind the restaurant by the water which is nice and a good size, but there are…

    Is this inside the base?

    Yes. It's on Hickam AFB.

Do you have to have base access to get to the restaurant?

Although in a weird spot, I promise the food is worth it! I personally have never had this type of Mexican food before. I'm used to chimichangas, enchiladas, street tacos so I was really out of my comfort zone here. But, I'm so glad it gave it a try because it was delicious! My friends & I came here for lunch and it was pretty busy. The line to order was out the door! I already knew I wanted Da OG Tostada with the infamous blue crab dip and shrimp ceviche. It was soooo refreshing & citrusy! The ceviche and well with the crab dip. The tostada was super crunchy despite all the juices from the dip and ceviche. My friends ordered the Kiawe Smoked Marlin tacos and the Ahi Tostada. They said they were delicious as well. The marlin was smoked and deep fried. The ahi was super fresh and the portions were generous! Lastly, we got chips and salsa and chips and guacamole. The salsa was on the saucier side (not chunky) and had a little bit of a kick to it. The guacamole was so good! You could taste the onions they added in it. The chips though. Omg. They were super crispy and perfect for dipping. Overall, although this was my first time, my friends said everything they've tried has been phenomenal! I'll have to come back to try more!

Of the two, we surprisingly ended up liking the latter more, as it had more of an Asian flair to it, whereas the OG tostada just tasted like traditional ceviche. Each tostada came with a generous amount of fish, which made the pricing more worth it. Although the tostadas were good, we didn't care for the steak quesadilla, nor the Mexican rice. The rice tasted oddly charred and smoky, which was not at all what we were expecting. It was honestly hard to finish. We tried mentioning it to the staff, but they seemed dismissive. Also, the parking is a hot mess here! There's literally only three small lanes that can fit two to three cars per lane for tandem parking.

After walking around, the hostess asked if we had a reservation. I gave her my name, but she said we didn't have one, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. She then explained that our reservation was actually at their sister restaurant around the other side of the building. We went over there and found that it was primarily a sushi restaurant, which wasn't really what we were looking for. We had expected more of an izakaya-style experience, so we canceled the reservation and returned to the original restaurant. Once seated, the service was good and our server was attentive throughout the meal. One thing that was a little confusing was that sushi and sashimi had to be ordered from the sister restaurant, even though we were dining in the other restaurant. The food was brought over and served to us without any issues, and there were no problems with the bill, but it took us a while to understand how the two restaurants operated together. We ordered several dishes, including chicken skin wrapped gyoza, crab tempura, an assorted sashimi platter, a cream cheese and fish roe appetizer served with toast, an egg dish topped with fish roe, chicken karaage, and the miso butterfish. The highlights for me were the chicken karaage, miso butterfish, and gyoza. I enjoyed them enough to order another round of the gyoza and chicken. That said, many of the dishes leaned toward the sweeter side of Japanese cuisine, which just isn't my personal preference. If you enjoy those flavors, your experience may be different. Overall, the food was good, the service was solid, and there were a few standout dishes. The confusion with the reservation, entrance setup, and relationship between the two restaurants got the evening off to an awkward start, but the meal improved once we were seated. I'm not really a Japanese food person, so four stars is probably the highest rating I could realistically give a Japanese restaurant. With that in mind, I thought they did a good job, and there were a few dishes I would consider ordering again.
