My friend and I decided to come here on 2/19/26 to try their menu for Chicago Black Restaurant Week 2026. We lucked up and was able to find a free parking space right by the restaurant. We walk in and are immediately greeted by Kai and were seated in a comfy and roomy space near the beautiful black art that is on the wall. It's a place where many come to and sit at the bar as there were many younger females there enjoying themselves at the bar watching from the four TVs they have there. Kai waited on us and was very attentive. We order a mocktail and a cocktail (lemondrop). I didn't like my lemondrop as it didn't taste like it should and Kai was nice enough to try & fix it and had me taste it again but I still didn't like it. It was taken off the bill. We order from the special menu they had for Chicago Black Restaurant Week. Soup of the day was Shrimp and Corn Chowder and Chicken Poblano both of which was delicious! We didn't have to wait long for our main courses which was the chicken and the rib eye sliced steak both that came with homemade mashed potatoes and some asparagus. They seasoned the meal very well and we enjoyed it. We both left the asparagus on the plate - that needs work. I recommend that they be shaved before cooking to eliminate the bitter taste and to get smaller ones for better flavor. Dessert came immediately after that and it was strawberry and caramel cheesecake, both which were beautifully presented. All in all, we enjoyed our experience here. You get ALOT for a $40 meal we felt and it was good. A suggestion: the rap & r&b music was great while there but way too loud - we had a hard time hearing each other in conversation. Jamie is the new owner since August 2025. He served our soup but we didn't know at the time that he was the owner until we were leaving and approached us wanting to know how everything was which we thought was so nice. Make sure you check with the restaurant what their hours are because they are extended from what the past owner had. He told us he will be updating the hours on all platforms including the hours listed on the door soon. After leaving Level Up Coffee, my friend and I walked down the block to Truth Italian Restaurant. I've been once before inside, but this time we were seated in their insulated outdoor tent, which has much more space than the cozy indoor area with a small bar and a few tables. The food was really good, but the service started off rocky. We were seated and no one came to our table due to a mix up, so we had to find someone. Our server was sweet and apologized, but there were several issues...my sidecar didn't come out with our drinks, our food arrived with chicken instead of the shrimp we ordered, and it took a while to fix. Even after that, my drink still hadn't arrived while my friend was already getting her second. Eventually, our server disappeared, and we had to ask another staff member for help. We later found out she was new, got overwhelmed, and left mid shift, which left us without a server. A manager stepped in, apologized, took care of us, and comped our drinks, which we really appreciated. Another manager also checked in before we left. Despite the service issues, the food was great, and once I finally received my drink, it was good too. I understand that things happen, especially with new staff, and everyone we interacted with was kind and apologetic. It wasn't the smoothest experience, but based on the good food and my friend's better past visits, I'd still give Truth another chance and recommend trying it out. read more

Located along a busy street, parking can be a challenge at times but it's at no charge. No reservations were required but if you have a large group, it'd be best to plan ahead by contacting the restaurant. I'd recommend parking along one of the side streets and just walk. Here's my truth about Truth, I won't dine here again. A total let down and in contrast to what the proprietor has shared for her vision. Hindsight is 20/20 and I found the dining experience to be underwhelming and a sign of problems internally. My sister dined here some years ago and she had a different experience that made me want to support this business. Spoiler alert, there is very limited "Italian" fare offered and seems like a hodgepodge of whatever the cook can tackle. Nothing wrong with diversifying the menu but if you have Italian in your name, then make sure it's more than Alfredo and calamari. While the owner Peyton Willborn was on sight, she and some of her good girlfriends sat at the entrance cackling and ki-ki'ing. Nothing wrong w/that but when I brought it to the attention of one of the workers (her son), he recommended that I go over and talk to her. Dude, that's your job! If a worker has intimidation about bringing issues to the manager's attention and she won't address it, that's a huge red flag to take your money elsewhere. I make it a point to support all businesses and with this being a black, woman owned business it saddened me that no one here thinks anything is wrong #Everything's Fine Seating was quick and you use your phone to scan a QR code for the menu. They advertise an 18% gratuity and a 90 minute sitting time during peak times. Is it really an omelet if it's deconstructed w/the ingredients piled on top? There are televisions and music playing to give an idea of the ambiance. It is dimly lit and you're seated in close proximity to others. There is a bar area that supports seating too. I ordered the catfish, cheesy grits and substituted eggs for sautéed spinach. Anyone who enjoy fresh, fried fish knows that the fish should still be sizzling a little bit when your order arrives. None of my food was hot and lukewarm is an overstatement. I am among the many that dislike when your server asks you "How's your food?" When you're chewing. I let the guy know and he tried to remake my food but I didn't have time to wait and hope they get it right. I went so far as to inquire if the fish was cooked today. Because the food wasn't hot, it took away a lot of the potential to be good. All items could have benefitted from a tad more seasoning but there was no saving cold fish. I asked the couple to my right if they had dined here before. It was their first time and they stated their food wasn't hot either. The couple to my left ordered alcoholic drinks and we watched as the pseudo bartender did a search for how to make a Sidecar. It wasn't the server's fault so I did tip him. No acknowledgement or adjustment on the food. I paid the bill and when waiting to sign, watched Peyton showcase by fussing at the guy to hurry up and bus tables. When employees aren't treated well, it trickles down to the customer, and it's evident here that the level of care for employees and customers is limited. This review is from my perspective and experience and not embellished. It may garner a canned reply or stern rebuttal. I visited Truth on a Sunday for brunch and the food did not disappoint. They ordered a steak omelette and I ordered chicken sausage, eggs and a small plate of French toast. The portions were sizable for the cost of each entree. The waitress was attentive -- seating and serving us quickly. The food came out quickly. I love going into a restaurant having in mind what I think I want but the menu takes me a different direction. I had my mouth ready for wings but the Philly chicken omelet and buttermilk waffle ended up winning that battle. The omelet was cooked perfectly with very well seasoned tricolor bell peppers and red onions. The chicken was seasoned very well and cooked just right. It wasn't dry or overcooked. Easy to cut into with my knife I sat inside and the atmosphere wasn't too loud or over crowded. There is an outdoor seating option that's an enclosed patio. I opted for a mimosa due to ingredients. It being available for a spiked coffee but I was very pleased with my mimosas. The waiter Kai, created some unique flavors for me. I had Truth Italian Restaurant on my restaurant list to try for several months now. As much time as I spend going to Bronzeville and Hyde Park, it should not have taken me so long to get there. Today, I went and I can't reiterate how much I kicked myself for delaying trying this restaurant. I went for breakfast and, as usual, I arrived shortly after the doors opened for business. This was so that I wouldn't have to be held hostage to the late morning/early afternoon brunch crowd. I had a seat in an otherwise empty restaurant and I was okay with that. For this visit, I had the Cajun crawfish omelet with cheesy hashbrowns. This was a welcomed switch from having chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, and the longer list of items that are common staples on brunch menus. They did not hold back on the crawfish at all. I would have sauteed the bell peppers until they were more tender, but the were still good in the dish. There was enough seasoning in the omelet that the cheesy hashbrowns didn't require much salt and pepper. There was a nice balance that really made the dish a highlight. The seating area is rather dark. I believe they have a patio that is open when the temperatures warm up. However, if bright spaces are your thing, that won't be the case here. For me, the food more than made up for the dim setting. Service was perfect and I will attribute that to me having arrived before crowds, indecisive patrons, and angry patrons. I saw some other menu items that I would like to try, so that means I will make my way back to Bronzeville in a few weeks for a second round. read more

I was expecting a glamourous beautifully decorated restaurant but got the total opposite. It was a little hole in the wall. Some kind of gnats were taking over the restroom. I was disappointed. The menu was a combination of simple mixed with "why would they put these ingredients together???? I had the lamb chops on spinach instead of the eggs.... I just ate the over dressed lamb chops. I was disappointed with my visit to Truth today. I have been here quit a few times with friends. Today I visited with my son. It was his 1st time there and he lives in NC and we go to different resturants when ever he comes home. I was excited to take him here. Service Our waitress was new. She told us that. I thought her service was good. The owner or manager (not sure) stepped in and started micromanaging her in front of the tables that she was serving. My son works in food service and said that if she had treated him that way that he would just walk out. She was way to aggressive and I was embarrassed for the new server. Food We ate a small amount of the food then took the rest to go just to be polite but my food was not good. I couldnt even get water smh. So me and my cousin decided to go to truth on vday sisnce we didnt have plans. We made a reservation for 7 pm. When we got there, it was about 10 people max inside. With 2 couples leaving out. We decided to sit at the bar. Again, it was almost empty in there and they were not busy. As we sat down we had already waited about 10 minutes before someone spoke to us. Truth Restaurant was one of the worst from the moment we walked in. The ambiance was gloomy, dark, and dank, and it looked nothing like the pictures posted on Yelp. To top it off, we were seated at a table adjacent to the kitchen, where the hostess's accentuated derriere repeatedly made unwelcome contact with the back of my chair every time she walked by. This hostess-waitress didn't win any points for politeness or attentiveness. When we politely asked to move to a table at the opposite end of the restaurant, we were met with a rather peculiar response filled with far too much negativity to be in an establishment where we were paying for a service. The vacant table we wanted was reserved for a group of three, even though it was nearly closing at 3:00 PM, and it was only around 2:15 PM with no other patrons in sight. (Nobody else showed up to eat here.) Thankfully, Chef Kai came to the rescue, taking charge of the floor on this sluggish/slo Thursday. He was THE shining star of our visit; and the food was undeniably tasty, and the portion size was great. I opted for the fried catfish executive with sunny-side-up eggs and cheesy hash browns. My advice to you is to order your food togo to spare yourself the attitude & drama. As a hometown girl, I'm genuinely puzzled by the attitude we had to endure, mainly when an 18% gratuity was added to our bill without any consultation, notation on the menu, or clue. Visiting from LA! Recommended from a Tic Toc suggestion. Decided to try on our last day for breakfast I asked our Lyft driver if she had been. She said she didn't care for the Italian food..not enough sauce on her pasta. however, perhaps the breakfast is good. It's a whole in the wall restaurant. It's totally unexpected from what's described. We arrived about 10ish in the morning( Wednesday) & and were surprised at how dark it was inside. We were greeted by our nice server & told to sit anywhere. I believe one other person was at the bar. We sat against the wall on a bench(?) Unimpressive decor. Music & TV were on. We ordered coffee & a different server brought out our coffee mugs with large soup spoons in them! Okaaaay! I am usually done by then ..but we carried on since we were going to the DuSable museum right after. Okay, back to the food! Hubby ordered Blueberry French toast, sausage & potatoes. He was pleased with his choices. Lots of blueberries & crunchy. I had chicken & and waffles, egg & hashbrown. The waffle was good. However, the chicken breast was small, and I didn't like the flavor. They were not taking reservations but we arrived before 11:00 (on a Sunday) and were seated right away. We also got a parking spot on the street really close by. The outdoor, covered patio was nice and ventilated except one table was seated very close to us. We were able to move a little. I had a Baileys and coffee while my daughter had juice. I ordered the Jerk Chicken Alfredo omelette which was very tasty. It was an egg white omelette stuffed with parmesan cheese with jerk chicken which was not too spicy, and cheesy hash browns and broccoli. The Alfredo sauce was delicious. The whole dish was a nice combination of flavors. My daughter got the Philly Chicken omelette which was also eggs with chicken and crisp roasted vegetables. Presentation and service were both nice. This was my second time visiting the restaurant and the service has only gotten better (and it was great the first time!) and more welcoming. I visited the restaurant today while running errands. It was not crowded, but it was still a very nice atmosphere. We were seated immediately, after being greeted by the owner like she was our auntie--if you don't know about our culture that means it was welcoming and with love. The pancake muffins were delightful and delicious. Warm fluffy muffins with chunks of bacon throughout. My cousin ordered the wings and she's not even a regular chicken person, but she loved them all the same. If you are in the area and need some good food from some great people, this is a great place to stop. Truth is perfect for COVID dining! Their heated patio was so comfortable, the temperature was perfect (I could actually take off my coat) the tables were spaced perfectly apart, and I loved the mood bulbed-string lights throughout the patio with the bright red umbrellas. This vibe is perfect for a date night, a night out with friends, or a solo dinner! The owner was present throughout my dining experience and checked in often to ensure I was comfortable, enjoying myself, and that my food was good. She even stopped by my table for a quick chat about starting the restaurant. It was great to hear her story! I want to start with the French toast, which was recommended by our server and she recommended we try 1 of each that they offered and I was glad that she did. The banana pudding which is the first pictured was good. I would've liked the vanilla wafer placed on top to be softer but the toppings itself was still good. The strawberry French toast was my personal favorite. It was covered in strawberry syrup and real strawberries. Next will be the jerk chicken Alfredo.. I was not sure how I felt about Alfredo sauce on an omelette but it was an experience I'm glad I took advantage of. The chicken was easily about to be cut, the broccoli was not over cooked, neither was the hash browns or the eggs that the chicken sat over. My only recommendation personally would be to add cheese to my egg, which is personal but it was still great without any cheese. They also have jerk shrimp Alfredo for my shrimp lovers and plenty of other specials that I would highly recommend trying. Absolutely great food. We went for breakfast and I ordered the Lobster grits. These grits were one of the best I have ever had. The grits were favorable and were topped with a nice portion of lobster pieces. It was so tasty! Totally recommend! I also tried, from my other friends dish, the chicken and waffles and they were absolutely delicious! The chicken was very tender and juicy. The waffles were perfect. We also ordered the Crab Cakes. Holy Moley they were the best crab cakes I have tried! They were moist and so full of flavor! It was dressed with a light kind of citrus dressing over Arugula. It was the best! We sat outside under their enclosed tent. It was very spacious and warm. The inside is kind of small and dim. It's still nice. The service was great. Sunday breakfast made complicated at Truth. Not very crowded, but just enough for our waitress to have four tables & her hands full. Food came out super fast after being ordered. That wouldn't have been a problem if the orders were correct. A wait on vegan sausage links, missing banana nut waffle well into meal. Constant request for condiments and water refills. One meal was sent back due to having hash browns when potatoes were ordered. The other due to waiting on sausage links, entire meal needed reheating. This really took away from enjoying the meal which was okay, just basic really. The watermelon mimosa I ordered was the best part of the meal. The server was very apologetic for the mishaps offering excuses for the kitchen. She also comped the banana nut waffle that arrived to the table after I was over half way done and had requested it be taken off the bill. I appreciate that the server was trying and the fact she did not have an attitude due to our perceived lack of quality. Upon checkout, the server made mention that she'd remember how we liked our meals prepared on a future visit and that gesture is enough for a possible second try. read more
