Once again, Yelpers, you helped me out in finding a great hoagie (ahem, sub) place. We got some subs for lunch while sitting in bliss at Schoodic Point in Acadia National Park again this week. The owner, Diane, thought she recognized us, but I told her she was mistaken. She then told us the short story of taking over the establishment which used to be next door run by a gentleman for upwards of 60 years. She kept his menu and added to it. Their subs are slightly different in that the meat is on top, and the fillers in the rolls. The wife picked out the #7 - Tourney Time Turkey which has veggies, American cheese, Turkey Chunks, Pepper (Green), and Pickles. I chose the #6 - Blu Ox Roast Beef which has the same toppings but also with Horseradish or Bleu Cheese. All the sandwiches I believe also have raw onions. However, since they are made to order, they can customize your sandwich to your liking. Diane also recommended some homemade macaroni salad or possibly the soup of the day, which today she called "Thanksgiving Leftovers." She said she just made it this morning, and had lots of turkey, potato, and other stuff (but not real leftovers!) We both went with that "soup." She also suggested the homemade croutons instead of crackers to go with it, and we also chose them. She threw in a baggies full of the croutons, and we were quickly on our way. We thankfully avoided the seagulls in Schoodic, and had the soup in the car as it was slightly raining. OMG, this was really a Thanksgiving Gumbo with a lot of flavor and pep. The homemade croutons threw it over the top. I could have just had a few more servings of this instead of the sub. After a couple hours overwatching the Schoodic version of Thunder Hole, we had our subs. My wife and I were a little surprised at the foot long rolls they came on as they had the consistency of being like a hot dog roll instead of what we're used to. The turkey chunks were plentiful and tasty. They are also made daily as they cook whole chickens and turkey breast to cut up for their foods. I could have used more meat and fillers on mine, but it was still quite good. And the seagulls got zip. So 5+ stars for the Thanksgiving Leftover Soup (Gumbo), and 4 for the subs. I'm rounding up due to the very friendly service and I always like to support local businesses when possible. I think there's a bazillion Subways in Maine, but only one The Legacy Sandwich. I'm going with The Legacy Sandwich. $30 for the two subs and two soups. Well worth it. read more

Best of the best. Owner is super sweet! Went in one day to try out the legendary pickle sandwich, but they were out of pickles. Owner told me to come back the next day, and he'd buy me one as I had traveled from Presque Isle to try this sandwich. Came back the next day and he stuck to his word. I ordered two small sandwiches, two bags of chips and a bottle of water. $22. The sandwiches were VERY small. Like they were essentially on a bun, respectively. Or a roll. Bagel sized. Stumbled upon The Legacy Sandwich on a drive through Bangor. Our sixth sense told us to stop, and we are so glad we heeded the call. Owner, Diane, met us when we arrived and gave us the rundown. It was raining out, and the warmth of the shop along with Diane's welcoming manner immediately made us know we'd found a local treasure. We had the daily soup special along with sandwiches and a side of loaded macaroni salad (cooked perfectly al dente)! And of course we had to sample something from the bakery case, and the homemade chocolate cookies did not disappoint. Everything was very well prepared and really delicious (and very fairly priced!). It was obvious to me that all the homemade food at The Legacy has a healthy dose of love mixed in and that, to me, is a winning formula. Kudos, Diane! Great food, incredibly friendly service. They really listen to their customers and will customize your order down to the last detail. Highly recommend their #6 Blue Ox roast beef (ask for horseradish AND blue cheese- you're welcome!) The daily soups are also excellent, along with their wide selection of other sides. Tried The Legacy for the first time today and I'm very impressed. I had a Paul Bunyan and a Beef Chili Soup and both were absolutely delicious, the soup especially so. I am one who likes / prefers to support local businesses when possible and I can recommend this one. It's hard to find places quite like Legacy Sandwich Shop anymore. A stuffed footlong sandwich for only $5? If the place isn't called Subway, forget about it. But, Legacy delivers in both quality and value when it comes to their sandwiches. The shop pays tribute to the famous Coffee Pot sandwiches by constructing them inside-out style with the meat, cheese, and pickles overlying the bread roll. I was told that Legacy makes the best tuna salad sandwich in town and I was not disappointed. The soft, footlong bread roll was stuffed with white albacore tuna and topped with cheese, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, and slightly sweet pickles to top it off. The service was quick and I was out the door in less than 5 minutes. In addition to 12 different sandwiches, they also have daily soups. For smaller portions, they also have a bulk roll option for $3-4. read more

I used to be a huge fan of the Coffee Pot, (the sandwich shop that Legacy Sandwich is styled after), so I had to give Legacy a try. When I got home and opened my sandwich up, I was really disappointed. I ordered it with extra pickles and there were only 5 pickle slices on the whole sandwich. The onions were so rancid (they had that old feet, sitting-around-for-too-long smell) that it turned my stomach. I ended up having to throw the whole thing away. I was really hoping I'd found the replacement for the Coffee Pot, but I think I'll have to keep looking! read more

I am a celiac and get gluten free sandwiches there. They have a great variety of choices. They also have gluten free desserts and soups. The minute you are waited on by any of the staff,it is a pleasant experience. Can't tell you enough good about this place. Busy sandwich shop with very fast service and good sandwiches. $5-6 for a footlong sandwich, and you can add on chips and a drink. My only complaint is there isn't much room to sit down. Only 3 small tables that sit two people each. We were there on a Tuesday at lunch, and there was a steady stream of people coming in and receiving their orders. read more
