Another stumbled upon spot while galavanting around downtown. Glad this bakery caught our eye. Seating area on the patio in front of the shop to enjoy the sunny day or inside tables along the wall to admire the history. From desserts and pastries to savory empanadas or pizza & pasta. Oh yes some bbq pork steamed buns and themed tiered cakes were a sight to see. They also have smaller sizes available in the display case when you're in need of a cake on the go, neatly packaged. It was a whirlwind of choices but I went straight to the plain cannoli. As we were ready to check out Amy and Luis (the owners) greeted us. Super friendly we felt right at home with the warm welcome. They've been running strong for 19 years at this establishment that has been here since 1895. They also had some empanadas. Couldn't pass up the opportunity we took home a sweet plantain & savory Japanese curry. Will be back to support this piece of history that is a home to passionate and talented individuals. Fun facts: Luis came from a family of bakers from Manila in the Philippines. Taking on the family tradition, he decided to start his own baking business. Stopped by on Thursday, 09/28/23 for the first time. Located in the heart of downtown Upland. If you would like to order a birthday cake and have it all customized to your liking then you would have to call in and preorder in advance. Unfortunately I wasn't aware however there were 2, already-made small lemon cakes with a 'Happy Birthday' tooth pick sign which I purchased or $15. I spoke to a lovely man who I believe is the owner. He asked if I wanted to try our their famous plantain pastries, guava pastries, and empanadas. I ordered 2 of each. I paid $37.20 total. My dad and I ordered coffee and the day's special: a croissant sandwich with sausage, avocado, and eggs with mojo-style potatoes. I got a cheese danish to supplement my meal. The potatoes get cut thin but not too much that it feels crispy like snack chips. The thickness allows for an inner soft texture, which tastes lovely with ketchup. The way they cook their fresh potatoes inspired me to do it myself, but I feel much better buying from the restaurant. The whole meal tasted very good and filling. I also ordered takeout pastries, including croissants, cookies, and turon. I recommend coming here to support this stellar small business. Luis and Amy welcome every guest and work hard to create a great customer experience. This little place is my favorite for food & a treat. It's been open since 1895 which is so cool, so much history. The inside is so clean and is decorated so interestingly with vintage pictures of the bakery and all of their lovely cakes. This café is quaint, nostalgic, and has delicious baked goods. The egg, sausage, cheese and avocado croissant sandwich was very filling and easily could've been split between two people. It came with freshly prepared potato slices, which were slightly crispy. I would recommend to season the egg on the croissant sandwich, and either provide salt and pepper for the potatoes on the tables or to season the potatoes a little bit more. I also tried their spinach and cheese empanada: the bread was soft, warm, and buttery. I wish bought some to take home. My sister tried the guava cheese pastry and enjoyed it. The cookies have a very soft texture, which I really liked, but if you like more crunchy or crispy cookies, you may not favor these. Lastly, we ordered some coffee which were made with vanilla Nespresso pods (they also had caramel). They provided cream and sugar, it was basic coffee (provided the caffeine we were looking for). Customer service was amazing! I didn't catch the staff person's name, but he was very helpful in taking our order, patient, and really friendly. The interior has some seating, and there is outside seating as well. It's located in the downtown area of Upland and I had no trouble with finding parking. I think it's worth stopping by if you're craving some baked goods and you want to support a local shop. read more

I don't even like lemon bread/cake, but my daughter wanted some and so I bought a 1/4 of a round to go and eat the next morning for breakfast. It was so moist and good that I kept eating. I thought, "man! What if I had bought the cinnamon cake (my preference?!), because I couldn't stop eating the lemon bread! This was my first time visiting this cafe. I was in the downtown Upland area and had quite some time before meeting with a client nearby. I almost went to another nearby establishment, but it was very busy and noisy. I drove down the block and found "The Local Baker & Cafe". The sign outside said since 1895 and it caught my attention. They had a variety of breakfast and lunch choices as well as delicious baked pastries. I ordered the bacon egg cheese crossiant and added avocado...DELICIOUS! It was a good-sized breakfast crossiant and came with a side of thin sliced potatoes. I had it with coffee and extra half-and-half... very good as well! The price was fair at $22.00 (including a peanut butter cookie I got for the road). Plenty of seating inside as well as an outdoor patio area, perfect for those nice days. The owner was nice and friendly. He brought my coffee and meal straight to my table. I didn't have to pay until I was finished with my meal (most places will make you pay first), but the owner, again, was very polite. I live about 25 minutes from here and frequent the Upland area from time to time, and I will be coming back again. read more

This is a family owned business. I stumbled on this place while I was taking a stroll through downtown Upland. My family's favorite pastry baked here is the curry chicken empanada, but if you don't come early enough, they're all gone! I have to remember to call ahead to have them save some for me by the time I arrive. It's out of this world! It's savory and you won't be satisfied with just one. Came by to read and eat while I waited for my daughter who was having a tea party around the corner. Glad I did because I was just delighted by this little cafe/bakery. It was hard to decide what to get because there were so many options. I ended up getting the turkey cranberry sandwich on their homemade bread, also had to order a a bombolini while I was here. First off the man working here was just so friendly and welcoming, he didn't rush me to order and was just such a lively little man. I really enjoyed my food, the bread was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside, the portion was very good and it came with fresh made potato chips. I am really glad I did because it has a long list of history and owners throughout the years. The guy at the cashier, who I think was the owner, was ecstatic we were there. He was so cheerful and let us know that our food we be up shortly. He kept updating us and made small talk with us. I ended up ordering their 3 cheese grilled cheese sandwich and it was yummy. My coworkers had the special which was a chicken salad sandwich and it came with a side or macaroni salad. I definitely will be back because they make their own personal pizzas and they looked yummy. The service was very friendly, nice guy behind the counter. My only complaint was the box he gave us wasn't big enough to fit everything so he gave us a croissant in a separate pastry bag but it was so big that it stuck out of the bag. I'm having a hard time coming up with any other descriptive words, everything was just ok. The croissants were big, but are more bready than chewy and flaky. The texture was just not what I expect from a good croissant. The apple turnover filling tasted very much like the old fried apple pies at McDonald's, which is not a bad thing. I haven't had one of those in so long, I enjoyed the feeling of nostalgia, but overall the pastry as a whole was still just ok. The cannolis were fine. I liked the guava cheese, but my husband thought there was too much filing. Can there be too much filling?
