Just got done with my first appointment here and had to rush to Yelp to tell everyone about it (even though The Local salon didn't ask or bribe me to... don't you just hate it when businesses do that?) I have been searching for a person to do my hair (I guess we call it a "stylist" now?) for over 5 years since we moved from NYC to LA. I am not a picky person, but I just wasn't jiving with the folks I've been to so far. After a debacle with my appointment at the last salon, I was back to Yelp somewhat dashed and defeated. I found The Local salon and noted that they had online scheduling. Win! Made my appointments with ease and received several friendly reminders leading up to the day of the appointment. The energy at The Local salon is really great. I'm not normally a person who talks about "energy," so, for me to mention it, it's a big deal. It is immediately apparent that everyone there is happy to be there (both the customers and especially the stylists). I'm in HR, so I pick up on these things. There's nothing worse than sitting in a chair for 3 hours, picking up subtleties from your stylist or the other stylists that make you wonder if you wander into some sort of strange Stockholm syndrome situation or something equally unnerving. I scheduled my appointment online with Rosie mostly based on her availability within my schedule and not realizing that she is also the owner. Not to worry, she's so down to earth and incredibly friendly that I was not intimidated. :) I was coming to my appointment with a less than ideal hair situation: seriously grown out highlights and a cut that was less than precise. After a detailed and non-judgmental consult, we were on our way. Rosie was easy to talk with and the appointment went by so quickly. It's usually such drudgery to be "stuck" in the chair for so many hours for highlights, cut, blow dry, etc. Rosie went above and beyond to get my head back in order and I walked out looking like a million bucks! A Brooklyn vibe with a NoHo sensibility, this place is nothing short of spectacular. Rosie, the proprietress, is approachable, hilarious, and damn good at what she does. She and her crew at The Local are so talented and cool, getting a hair cut feels sort of like "hanging out." All of the staff, Kaleigh in particular, are stellar stylists. The Local Salon is super cute and everyone is really friendly. Besides my stylist, the best part about the salon is that there's no snobby hollywood tude there. My stylist is Irena, who is a superhero and her secret weapon is magic hands. Seriously, she effortlessly snips around my head with her scissors and razor and voila, within minutes, I feel amazing. I have thick and wavy hair and she knows just where to cut and how to texturize that doesn't make my chubby face seem so. As my hair grows out week by week, the style just gets better and better. She's fun to talk to and I've been a very happy client of hers for at least 6 years. Even just a quick trim does wonders. She's also a fantastic colorist. I like my hair to be low maintenance and Irena has accommodated that with both my cut and color. No styling is needed except for rubbing some product in and the way she colors can be retouched if I want it or just left alone if I don't want to color for awhile. I send everyone I know to The Local, so I really thought I had a yelp review locked in. Now I must make up for this egregious error. To start off with: Alyssa Kim. She is the best thing to ever happen to my hair. We've trimmed, we've colored and finally we chopped a whole mess of hair off for a transformation Thursday to remember. I have not seriously taken length off my hair since high school because I never trusted anyone to make my extremely fine, straight hair look like anything special. I just had tiny trim after tiny trim after tiny trim. Then there was Alyssa. All I can think of now is what we can experiment with next and how amazing she will inevitably make my hair look. When my mom came out to California to visit from Connecticut, I knew she had to see Alyssa too. If you can imagine my horrible hair anxiety, my mom was even worse. She has had so many people make her hair look great in the salon, only to go home and have flat hair that she can't style. Alyssa showed her everything she was doing and explained what my mom needed and how she could maintain the style at home. My mom has never been happier. I can't share Alyssa with everyone, because if she's doing my hair, she can't do my husbands too. So I booked my husband with the one and only Rosie. Let's revisit hair anxiety for a moment. My husband has had ONE person cut his hair since he was in high school. He refused to see anyone else. This one person happens to not only be an amazing hair stylist, but he's a close friend with a crazy busy schedule. I knew they shouldn't see each other just when my hubby needed a trim so I brought in the Rosie Fiore guns to take over on hair. Guess who is asking for me to book him an appointment again? A friend recommended The Local to my roommate who loved it so much that she prompted me to go. I was able to make a same day appointment and the whole experience was lovely. From the time I walked in the door and was greeted and offered a drink, until I was hugged as I left, everyone was attentive and warm. Let me start by saying I am a huge crier when I get my hair cut. I weep like a baby every time. Until I met Kayleigh!!! Kayleigh has been doing my hair for about two years now and I love it every time. When I got engaged, Kayleigh was the 3rd call I made to make sure she could do my hair on my big day. The owner of the salon, Rosie, graciously opened up the place so that all my bridesmaids, my mom, my MIL to be, my Step Mom, my make up team AND my photographers could all be there at the same time. Just had my first experience at The Local Salon and it did not disappoint! The salon itself is great inside- it felt so comfortable and relaxing. I got my hair cut by Sarah and she rocked it! I have trouble getting people to cut my wavy hair in a way that I feel suits me. I definitely didn't have this issue when I came to Sarah- she really knew what to do and gave me some great tips for taking care of my hair and recommend a curl product that has been wonderful to use so far. If you've got waves or curls and struggle to find someone who can cut/style em, Sarah is your girl!! LOVE The Local. I have been a client of Rosie's for nearly a decade and have never been disappointed. Her vision for a friendly, neighborhood, salon and barber shop is perfectly executed. Kayleigh is the absolute BEST! I am in love with my hair and I will never go to anyone else. I have been "in the process" of going blonde for about a year now. For some reason, no matter what I would tell my hairdressers, they would have me leaving the salon with light brown hair...and with a deep disappointment that I spent all that money on something I didn't ask for. I saw Susannah for the first time last week and she was amazing. My hair was long and doing a weird pyramid-thing where it just poofed out from my head in a triangle. I showed Susannah some pictures and she gave me a cut that left me with a much more flattering shape. I don't really know how to style my hair at all (don't blow-dry or straighten my hair at home) and I mentioned to Susannah when I was leaving that I doubted I'd be able to get my hair to look nearly as good when I washed it. I am a newer client of the salon--I just moved to LA in May (2013) and needed a new colorist. I am a platinum blond and so maintaining my color and getting someone who can really do a good blond (none of that crappy gold, someone I can in to see often often so I don't have horrible outgrowth, etc.) so I did some research before my first appointment. I LOVE this salon. Rosie is amazingly sweet and Sandra D is a true professional at color. She is truly gifted--she knows exactly how to create and maintain color that looks as bright and pretty as I want but it grows out better than any hair color I have had in the more than 20 years I have been coloring my hair. Beautiful salon, friendly staff, family feel. Everyone is laid back, but the quality of the cuts and color are top-notch. I live a pretty far hike from the salon but it's worth the drive! I went here because the reviews were amazing and I fell in love with Kayleigh and her talents just by looking at her Instagram and I knew I had to go there. I can promise you this place is not overrated. I was there for about three hours, but it didn't feel like it because the place was so comforting and friendly. I knew my hair would be a little damaged by the time I was done but not burnt to a crisp. I had dark, black, hair and wanted highlights. However, when my hair was done being washed during my second session, I had an entire head of blonde. Even as Sandra was blow drying my hair she saw my it was ripping off with every stroke of her brush and yet, she still charged me over $200. I came out of the salon with string like hair. For a while I couldn't even comb through it with my fingers because an embarrassing amount would fall out. I know I probably should've said something right away but like many others after an unhappy haircut, I just left. I'm sure Sandra isn't a bad hair dresser but she did mess up my hair entirely by letting the bleach in for too long just so she could take in another customer while I was under the dryer chair. I'm aware I won't get my money back, or my hair (that I've been trying to grow out for years now), but I can at least leave this so that others know to be more cautious of how hairdressers treat their hair. Don't be afraid to confront them if you're not satisfied. Take it from me, it's best to say you don't like something than having to beg others to fix your damaged, doll like, hair. read more

I'm VERY picky when it comes to my hair - blonde highlights are tricky and not everyone can do the process right. I was referred to Max at The Local by a friend because even though she's new to the biz, she's good with blondes and VERY meticulous. Now that she's done my hair twice - everything from color, cut, and even an updo for an event - I'll tell you she's good at everything! It's a drive for me to get there from Santa Monica but totally worth it. The salon and its staff are also very friendly so it's a nice place to be - not crazy and loud like most salons. Kayleigh I was referred to Kayleigh by several people and she is everything and more! I walked into the salon on the verge of a chemical hair cut from box dying my own hair purple and then attempting myself to take the color back out ‍. She gently took the remnants of the color out and gave my hair it's life back with an olaplex treatment and a cut! It's back to feeling so healthy and strong. Kayleigh has been coloring my hair for several months now and it's official: I will not trust anyone else to color my hair! She took me from jet black to the coolest plum-to-violet melt and I ADORE it. When I first went to Kayleigh last August, I told her I wanted to dye my hair a crazy color, but I wanted it to look as natural as possible. And that's exactly what she gave me. If I was born with purple hair, this is how it would look - all the right highlights and lowlights, rather than just straight up unicorn hair. OK so I stand 100% corrected about my initial experiences with The Local. I am a convert and a devotee. After I had a bad hair coloring experience there, I wrote my first Yelp review and got contacted by Rosie, the owner. I made another appointment, this time with her, and came in to hopefully go from Malibu Barbie to the ombré of my hair fantasies. I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience getting my color fixed, and everything I hoped for in my initial appointments was finally realized. Rosie was absolutely amazing, I am totally in love with her. She was the consummate professional and a dream to work with; super thorough in explaining her plans, and made me feel like I was part of the process. I felt like I was in great hands; she is clearly experienced and educated, and I can't recommend her enough. She gave me a ton of tips and guidance for getting the most out of my color, and her humor and warmth made the experience great. My hair is literally a fabulous ombré dream that I have been forcing everyone to look at non stop. My friends were calling me Malibu Barbie, and now they're all dying to copy my 'do, and my husband can't stop saying how much he likes it and how good it looks.
