This place is a gem. I'm not sure how I lived in Oakland so long and have never stopped by. Once you go in, you'll be greeted by a lady who will help you out. She reminds me of that one cool auntie that gets on your case when you f*ck up and it annoys you because you know she's right and she's just being real with you. The Lunch Box probably makes the best sandwiches in the world in my opinion. I live right around the corner and always pass by them. There's always a crowd waiting outside their storefront. They have picnic benches for those who are waiting or want to eat outside. It's a great place to pick up lunch and go somewhere to eat like Lake Merritt. All the sandwiches I've gotten are delicious and the meat is also fresh. They're also vegetarian friendly by the way. I'm looking forward to try their Roasted Eggplant Sandwich. I've had them almost every weekday the last 3 weeks. I've had their Roasted Turkey Sandwich, Pastrami Sandwich, Ruben Sandwich, Chicken Salad Sandwich, and their BBQ Brisket Sandwich. They roast their own meat everyday. They also have hot plates like turkey, mash potatoes and gravy, soups, and salads which are delicious too. They have fridges for drinks and snacks like chips and cookies to grab. You can order online. The wait to pick up is usually around 10 minutes if you order in person and 20 minutes if you order online or over the phone to pick up. I honestly look forward to coming here most weekdays especially when I'm busy with work. I bring my two dogs here, Lily and Kevin and they love the owners Jeff and Ann. They spoil them with fresh deli meat like beef and turkey. Jeff and Ann are amazing to talk to and they remember their customers names even after the first time time you order. They say hi to their customers right away as soon as they walk in and they're extra friendly to dogs. I have yet to try their other restaurant Dinner House down the street which are open Thursday-Saturday I believe in the evening. They know the menu by heart and you can trust that they can make a great recommendation for you especially if you're the type to be overwhelmed by menus. Sometimes, I come in and ask them to surprise me which has been my go to recently. They have different toppings and tapenade which I recently discovered which is by the way a total game changer! Jeff and Ann don't know how much they make my days a little easier and my days brighter every time I see them and order lunch. It's a small gesture but they're definitely a hardworking business who know how to operate it well. Put in my order online for a pastrami sandwich on Dutch crunch with provolone cheese and their olive garlic tapenade. Walked down and picked up my sandwich 15 minutes later and it was just being bagged up. Everyone was super friendly and the food options looked great. I found my way back at The Lunch Box for yet another lunchtime sandwich. I arrived a little before noon and they were busy but they sure do move quickly! I ordered a Tuna Sandwich (~$9) on a Dutch Crunch Roll with pepper jack cheese, topped with lettuce, tomato, red onions, mayo, and mustard. For my tapenade, I chose the Olive & Garlic. It was ready in a timely manner and I began to dig in! Although it was filling, the amount of tuna wasn't plentiful and the whole sandwich felt pretty dry. I expected a "truer" tuna salad taste but this was definitely on the drier side. The Dutch Crunch Roll was great as was the Olive & Garlic Tapenade. It has typical popular deli vibes with an open door, lots of chips hanging around and lots of people waiting for orders. They have lots of sandwich offerings both hot and cold and the best part is they make their own meat. So you can get a fresh non processed meal to-go. Happy to report that the majority of Yelpers got it right - this place is an excellent sandwich shop that also serves up hot plates, wraps, and salads. In COVID-times, you can walk up and order and wait for your food outside. However, you can also order online through their website or through the Yelp interface. Highly recommend ordering ahead as when I walked up to the storefront, there were probably about 6 folks waiting for their order. Meanwhile, I strolled into the counter, grabbed my sandwich and went. If you are also a WFH person, you can easily slide onto their website during a meeting, place an order, and 20 minutes later it'll be hot and ready for you. I ordered: 1) pulled pork sandwich on dutch crunch with cheddar, pepperoncinis and jalapenos and all the fixings (default sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion) 2) bbq brisket sandwich on dutch crunch with cheddar, lettuce, and onions - per the owner's recommendation! I added a note on my online order asking her to fix it up how she suggested to make sure I got it right my first time. The sandwiches freaking DE.LIVE.RED. Both meats are on the sweeter side vs savory. Sandwiches are loaded up on protein so you def feel like you're getting bang for your buck. The wrap was double sealed first in the foil and then in Saran wrap, which was very considerate since it seemed like a to-go friendly place.
