This was a place I truly wanted to visit. It's off the beaten path but the drive is just beautiful. This is small but so cool! I felt at home right away. Very welcoming and well kept. The menu is simple but has items for everyone. No burgers but a chicken burger grilled. No fries but they have lots of sides. Oysters are their specialty and they do it right. Had winch a wonderful mid afternoon lunch at the end of the summer season. Oysters were sweet and fresh.

Make a reservation before even coming. We made the mistake of not doing that and we had to wait an hour, but there is a nice beach nearby to spend the time. We had the oysters, mussels, fish cake and scallops. The best part of the meal was the mussels in house seasoning. They were just sooooo good and well flavored. The runner up with the fish cakes, which were packed full of fish and barely held together with the potato mix. It was pan fried so that it had a crust of flavor on the outside while being tender and soft inside. It was one pricey meal, but worth the experience of having everything sourced so locally! read more

Heard all about the raving reviews and decided to come here... But unfortunately left quite disappointed. We ordered a couple items to share, but nothing really stood out to me. Half a Dozen Oysters: Honestly, I've had better oysters in Toronto. The one I had was pathetically limp, and not at all flavourful. There also wasn't any briny taste whatsoever. My family had better feedback for theirs, so perhaps it was a one off incidence. Steamed Mussels: Honestly can't go wrong with ordering this dish, as the entire island does a pretty good job of cooking mussels! The broth was flavourful and rich, and quite compatible with the mussels. Seared Scallops: We got a Caesar salad as the side, and it was delicious! The bacon bits were quite prominent in flavour, and the restaurant was very generous with the amount of parmesan cheese. The scallops themselves were quite good too, though I found the caramelized onions to overpower their tastes a bit. Fish Taco: The fish was breaded and fried quite nicely, and the condiments added a pop and depth of flavour. We chose the garden salad as an accompaniment, and I was instantly taken away by the beautiful colours! There were gorgeous shades of purple and pink, and the edible flowers made this salad almost too pretty to eat! It was a lighter salad, but still undeniably delicious. This place is awful small, so be prepared for a wait. They do have a takeout counter at the lower level, where prices are significantly cheaper for their seafood (like their oysters and clams). Be prepared also for some attitude; though our waitress was nice, we witnessed firsthand how feisty she could get when a customer sat himself down without her permission! read more

Honestly I can't understand why there wouldn't be a line out the door around the clock at this place. Located in the town of Malpeque, needless to say the oysters are world class. They purchase their oysters and mussels fresh off the dock on alternate days so they are always at their freshest. We ordered one dozen choice small and one dozen choice large oysters. They were extremely flavourful and tender. I would tend to lean towards the small as the large can be a bit of a mouthful. We also ordered the pan fried haddock and a strawberry shortcake for dessert. The haddock was good but not the star of the show, the shortcake was out of the world. Definitely the best that I have ever had in my life! Typically I'm not a big fan of strawberry shortcake as I find the cake spongy and dry. This shortcake was amazing, moist, yet crisp on the outside, just mind blowing. Add the fresh island strawberry, which they pick-up daily from a local farm, and fresh whipped cream and this dish absolutely hits it out of the park. On our second visit we ordered the mussels with their house sauce. They were outstanding. The thing about Malpeque Oyster Barn is that they produce outstanding food, not by employing world renowned chefs who dream up elaborate recipe incorporating espuma or never heard of ingredients. Here, they keep it simple and stick to what they know. Fresh local ingredients that were growing in the wild the day before find them selves delivered to your plate. A formula that you just can't beat. If you are in PEI you must come and eat here. yes you can find Malpeque oysters throughout the island, but I think that it is worth coming to the source. And if you are not in PEI and you love oysters and/or strawberry shortcake you must get on a plane, boat or car and get over here ASAP, additionally PEI is a beautiful place to visit and I haven't even mentioned the lobster yet... read more

It was quiet so we were able to be seated right away, but typically there is a line to eat here. We ordered two dozen oysters and two glasses of wine. I eat a lot of Malepeque oysters in Toronto, and thought I oughta eat some fresh from the source. I'm so sad to say it was disappointing. It was MORE expensive than in Toronto (East36 does a buck a shuck for the same sizes), and it was about the same amount of freshness. I'm very picky about the freshness of oysters, but really, the ones at this restaurant were similar to the city, which doesn't make sense at all. read more

What's a better place than trying the PEI famous Malpeque oysters at its home? This place is definitely worth a try if you are around the area. A little fishing harbor with very nice scenery. Tried the local quahog clams, oysters, mussels, lobster roll and chowder. All are amazingly fresh. Also enjoyed the local PEI blueberry beer together. Which is a nice touch. This is a delightful place for a date night after a day at Cabot Beach. We had the fresh raw oysters (which were excellently prepared and shucked), the fried oysters (best we have ever had so delicate and not over done at all) and the fish burger (also excellent and truly amazing value to be honest). We stopped here on our way back from a tour of North Cape Coastal area. We called ahead for reservations even though it was a Monday afternoon. We were able to score a nice table by the window. The waitress said they were booked until 8 pm so it was good that we called for a reservation. We ordered a half dozen each of the small and medium oysters - they were creamy and fresh. Malpeque oysters are some of the best so what else can I say? We also had the mussels (large-house sauce) and fish tacos. The mussels were tasty and the fish in the tacos light and flaky. The 'taco shell' more resembled a piece of naan than a soft flour taco. We used the taco shell to soak up the liquid in the mussel bowl - a toasted piece of garlic bread would have been a nice touch for the mussels. They also offer a variety of wines and local beers. The servers were friendly and the atmosphere 'relaxed'. The oysters were pricey but the rest of the items were on par with other island restaurants. Definitely worth the drive - give it a try. read more

The first thing to keep in mind is that the Oyster Barn is worth the trip. The second thing is that it isn't where Yelp shows it on the map. Kensington may be its mailing address, but it's actually located 4 kms away on the Malpeque harbour pier. A small sign in Kensington points the way and a second sign tells you there's still 2 kms to go. But there's a little jog in the road that isn't marked and if you keep driving straight you end up on a dirt road. Turn left before you get there, then right and you'll find it by the harbour on the road to the Provincial Park. So. Oysters. You can look out the window of the restaurant and see the boats that they came in on that same morning. Small and large sized. As fresh as you can get and with a briny sea taste that somehow seems to fade when they're shipped across the country. We had six of each and they were delicious. There are a number of other seafood items: mussels, fish, scallops; pan fried, deep fried, on a bun, in a roll up, in a taco. All good. But the mussels, cooked in the house broth were unique. Our server wouldn't reveal the secret, but I would guess that salt and butter figured more prominately than in other typical broths. They were absolutely delicious and I devoured them like eating a bag of chips. The wait staff are friendly and will tell you the full story of sourcing their products. Not to be missed. read more

The quaint little cafe is located upstairs in the barn and is peppered with a few tables. Had to wait about 30 min, so we decided to explore Cabot beach, down the road. So glad we did! Beach was beautiful and not very populated. Remember to bring the bug spray this time of night. Just enough time to return to the restaurant for our table. Fried oysters were absolutely delicious! Small place at which you may have to reserve (or call ahead). Oysters are definitively the reason to go there. The shucker is among the fastest one in north america (awards on the wall). the strawberry dessert is worth it also. Do not have more expectations with the other items (chowder, mussels etc) are better prepared elsewhere. Added a night in Malpeque just to go to the Oyster Barn. Made reservations to get the two top table under the window. You should too. The oysters were super fresh ... harvested that morning, the steam mussels in the house sauce were spectacular and the pan fried oysters were exceptional. We had eaten enough and passed on dessert but the rhubarb crisp sounded like something I would enjoy. The desserts are house made. Kids had grilled cheese and hot dog. The owner or manager stopped at our table to chat. The serving staff were so accommodating and gracious with the kids. We tried to make reservations to go back a second time but they couldn't seat us at a time that would work for us. Great, quaint seafood restaurant! We had pan fried oysters, 1/2 dozen small oysters, 1/2 dozen large oysters, and the chicken Caesar salad with Gahan blueberry ale. Everything was fresh and delicious! We were able to get a reservation on the same day, but we definitely recommend getting one as there are a limited number of tables. Went here after Labor Day so the Island was winding down. This place was pretty good. I had the fish cakes (3/5), which tasted great but did not have all that much fish. The halved baked potato was nicely garnished but served too cold to start with. We sat at the middle 4-top table (just 2 of us) and the air conditioning breeze cooled things off too much (don't sit there, ask for something along wall, or better, right at the window overlooking the water). She had the scallops, which she says were 5/5. Raw oysters were cold and (of course) fresh, and typically delicious for PEI. Caesar salad was great. read more

Yes, the famous Malpeque oysters are fresh off the boat, and no, the Oyster Barn isn't as easy to find as you might think, at least for us. We got lost, albeit not for long, but the signage here is not great, so pay attention. It's worth it, because the Barn has some really fine briny Malpeques here. We ate several dozen, consumed a cold local brew with them, and even found room for some salad. But the lure is basically oysters. You can eat 'em upstairs in a small, very casual dining area with tables overlooking the bay (it fills up soon after the restaurant opens at 11 a.m.), or you can get 'em to go downstairs. Very nice. So why not five stars? Well, as other Yelpers have noted, the prices here are the same as you pay in big-city restaurants much farther away (like Toronto); seems to us that the proximity of boat to plate ought to count for a little discount at least.
