I happened upon this place looking for some dinner before a show at the Stanley. It was Christmas time so, pretty arrogant of me to think I could just walk into a place without a reservation, and yet, there was space for 2 at the bar!!! Lucky us! Our order got taken to the wrong table so we had to wait for a long time before enquiring, but our bartender /server definitely made it right. We had the spicy chicken sandwich with yam fries and cauliflour bites. Both were fantastic!!!! The bartender with fair hair and super tall was great. He was attentive and friendly. He appeared to be geniuinly interested in his job, which is always nice. The dark haired bartender wafted in a puff of marijuana smell with him, so that's why they lost a star. We were a group of 4 mid 60's adults who attempted to have dinner at the Marquis before a show at the Stanley. Made a reservation for 6:15. At 7:20 asked a server what's happening with our dinners? She looked at us and walked away. At 7:30 we asked our server for the bill for our drinks as we still didn't have food and at this point there's no time to eat - we need to leave. He looked at us and walked away . We left some cash on the table to cover our drinks and walked out. We did not get our food !! Service was rude. The list of food and drinks they were out of was ridiculous. Sorry, after our experience, will advise you to stay away from Marquis Grill. The food here is pedestrian pub fare, absolutely nothing to impress. Why 4 stars then? Because this just might be the best neighbourhood pub we have int this area. Recently the Stormcrow moved in and showed promise,... but it is quite busy and noisy. From the door this place looks fancier than it is and from the inside, especially the back, it really is a col looking place and less "shiny" than I thought. This IS the place for a drink, to hang out, and to maybe have a bit of food if you are really hungry. Prices aren't bad for a Granville St. location. I'd been tipped off to this place when I moved to this this area 4 years ago,.. it took me this long to go but I bet I'll be back for a second time much sooner. read more

I don't know what it is, but this little place rocks South Granville. I've walked by here 100's of times, and finally for whatever reason I gave it a shot and now I'm hooked. Don't forget to check out the drink specials outside. They have hella good drink deals. $3 beers, $3.25 gin & tonics, $4 Jameson, the list goes on. Best prices I've seen for a non-dingy place and they don't serve crap drinks either. When you walk in the walls of mirrors creates quite the illusion of being a big place. Whether it was the alcohol or not, it kind of feels like a yacht or a wicked cool basement of a house. 1st visit I went with server's suggestion of tempura tuna bits and classic perogies. Tuna was good, but the perogies were all star. Topped with caramelized onions and served with sour cream and feta cheese, this hit the spot. I also tried their bourbon bbq ribs last night. Fall off the bone goodness. Staff are stellar. The bartender also waited the tables, yet maintained high level of service. Open until 2am everyday except Sunday. Rye and coke that tastes like home and the sign outside doesn't lie rye and cokes are at Manitoba prices. It even comes in the same glass as the sharptail (home of the one box hunt!) They even have draft cocktails, like the crown float (somersby and guinness). I'll have to get that next time. Borscht is even on the menu! I came here for a friend's big 3-0 party, not knowing what to expect to be honest. The front of the restaurant is so narrow that I didn't even know it existed until that day. In fact, I walked past it while looking for it that evening. The place is set up similar to Joey's or any of those trendy Yaletown places, with house music pumping away. Most of the walls are mirrored to give the illusion of space. We ended up sitting along a row of tables right next to the corridor connecting the washrooms + kitchen with the rest of the restaurant. For appies, I had the yam fries. They were crispy and not too salty. The sauce was good as well. As for the main course, I decided to try their lamb chops and salad, for $15. I really liked how the lamb was done, as it was the rib section of the lamb and not a leg like most other places. My biggest complaint is that there was nowhere near enough tzasiki sauce. I ran out about 1/3 into my meal. As for the drinks.. well, my friend spent the last 30 minutes of the party in the washroom.. regurgitating. So I'm pretty sure they weren't watered down. The music is so good, 90's r&b. I love it. The service on the other hand sucks balls. The bartenders do not pay any mind to the patrons at the bar. The bar is not important it seems in this establishment. It's not like any other city I have been to, the bartenders here ignore the bar patrons. They take your order, give you what you want and leave you alone. They don't check on you, it's almost like you're an inconvenience to them. Maybe I'm old fashioned, or just an alumni bartender that was taught to respect your bar, and build relationships so people come back time and time again. read more

I was warned about the food here by some friendly folk from both CC and Joey's. But when AC forces you to check your carry on luggage on an empty plane (not kidding) and you arrive an hour late after midnight on a weekday, pickings are slim when looking for a meal, so reluctantly, we tried it out. The place was buzzing and service was good. We each ordered a drink (wine and beer; both fine) and I settled on the infamous perogies. Of course, they were deep fried as all frozen, tasteless perogies are done nowadays (sigh) which is not how to serve a perogy. But they were fine. The polish sausage add on was decadent but pretty tasty, actually. The sour cream and onions helped, too. We were recommended to try the flatbread pizza, and unbeknownst to us, it also came with the same sausage. It was fine, but I would have preferred to have ordered at least one dish without sausage. It was served with a nice sized salad which made up for the miniscule sized pizza. I'm sure I could have made a doctored up frozen pizza at home just the same, but hey, it was all fine. So, if you've been wondering about this place for as long as I had debated trying it out, you can go and it will be exactly as you expected but with better service. It's just a neighbourhood spot, but I'm sure it must struggle with the chain competition down the street. The atmosphere was certainly quaint, but unfortunately, the food just can't match up to those other businesses that I won't mention here. read more

I want this place to be amazing. After deciding not to brave the lineup for Rangoli or Vij's, my husband and I had high hopes that we'd discovered a new little jewel in the neighbourhood. Alas, the Marquis has some sad failures. First, top marks for the decor. Old-school style booths, wood paneled walls and a big bar give the impression of a cozy little Gin spot circa 1956. It all does downhill from there. And a note that it's probably under new management as the food is no longer American style but has an Eastern European bent. The staff should be as elegantly attired as the interior. Instead they are lackustre in standard issue black pants, t-shirts and bad shoes. No charm either. Friendly but very, very inexperienced. Our subpar drinks came AFTER our entrees. Okay. Fine but what really put the nail in the coffin was when the "chef" came to our table, asked us what we thought of his food, saw we hadn't sampled it yet then proceeded to explain that he'd wait until we did. Then he cornily claimed to have a "pistol" in his pocket so we could shoot him if our stew was not to our liking. What? This isn't Barkerville or dinner theatre. Fack off so I can enjoy my meal. What's more he came around a second time and asked us if he should "get the job" as chef at the restaurant. Huh? No you graceless cretin, you and your over-seasoned food should be at ihop and not in my face. So sad. This spot could be amazing with the right management and concept. read more

Being a marketer by trade, this bar holds a special place in my heart- its dim lighting, large mirrors, extensive use of wood, and retro fixtures make it the perfect watering hole for engaging in Mad Men fantasies. It's also rather strategically located, as the Granville area is a bit lacking in bars and pubs where one can relax, catch-up with friends, and otherwise pass a few hours over drinks. Major pluses include the fact that they stay open until 2am almost every night, and a daily drink special that offers a range of unexpected, tasty beers in the $3.25 to $4 range. I've not partaken in their full menu, but have enjoyed the all appies and snack dishes I've tried to date (the perogies being my go-to.) read more

My friend and I visited Marquis on Monday night as it is located handily between my home and her work. It was fairly busy for a Monday, but I definitely felt that service could have been faster and more friendly - I always try and have some rapport with my server (although I totally get some people just don't want to chat!), but our server had no interest in talking, and came over to check on us very rarely. That said, you really can't beat $3.25 drinks! The highballs were fine - nothing special, just your typical bottom shelf booze, but we weren't looking for craft cocktails here, just something to cheers with while we caught up. We were also ravenous by the time we arrived and promptly (tried to) order food (that took a while). We shared the perogies with the additional "spicy" chorizo, the "spicy" jerk chicken flatbread, and the fries with "spicy" jalapeno ketchup. You may have noticed some quotation marks there - when I see the word "spicy" on a menu, I do expect a certain level of tingle in my mouth. Bar food is rarely what I would call spicy, but my tolerance is pretty high - but honestly, there was zero spice to these dishes. The amount of chorizo with the perogies was positively meager, which added insult to injury, and the jerk chicken may well have been switched out for their Mediterranean chicken - I tasted no hint of jerk seasoning at all! And the jalapeno ketchup was unfortunately just ketchup... This place is good for a cheap drink, and maybe the food is better once you've consumed several of said cheap drinks, but it's not somewhere we'll be making a regular hangout spot. read more

I so want to give this place 5 stars..... It's by far the cheapest in South Granville for drinks, $3.25 G&Ts? Absolutely, yes! Especially when your neighbourhood alternatives are the likes of Joey, Earls, and Cactus Club - thank you, but, just....no. I really appreciate the decor of the place - walking in to the place feels like you've joined the old boys club, or are in a scene from Mad Men. The place has this seductively awesome dark brown aura about it. Really cool light fixtures. Plush leather benches. High-end feeling, and this really great old-school charm. But it's all new, and very tastefully done in my opinion. That being said, there are some sticking points. The music is insufferably awful - and it pains me because the place would be super with the right mix. I really wish that the food were better, for a place with inexpensive drinks, I'd expect the more expensive food menu to be a place to show off. I've tried the server-hyped perogies - they weren't very good. The borscht, I would expect to see on a European-influenced menu like the Marquis', but this version was very over salted, and under seasoned. Parhaps my taste - but it wasn't nice. Last time I was there, I had the rice noodle basil and marinara - it was a huge portion, and it was good, but after a while I felt like the huge portion got a bit boring. The service is OK, always seems understaffed, but I can't really complain as the waiter/bartender seems to always come just as I finish that last sip of whiskey. A revamped and tastier menu - and this would earn the fifth star - and would become my go-to dinner and drinks spot. Or maybe, if nothing else changed - just a great place for drinks; yet a very enjoyable, and comfortable place to have them. read more

I had heard of good times here from a couple of friends. The place has been a restaurant forever, but it's apparently under new management now, and things have definitely changed. Had heard rumours of brunch, so went in for a really late brunch just after 2pm on a Saturday. First thing that popped out from the menu was Breakfast Poutine. Oh yeah -- gruyere, bacon, and carbonara sauce over fries. Very tasty, although incredibly rich / filling. The rest of the brunch menu is a selection of bennies (I had a double smoked bacon bennie) and omelettes, plus a cheap "classic breakfast". The fresh fruit with my bennie was a blood orange, pear slices, strawberries, grapes, and oranges -- way better than the average woody cantaloupe. I just had a regular coffee (which was fine - could have been a bit stronger) but it looks like they have a decent espresso machine there. Mimosas were also on offer, which is what brunch is all about. I looked at the dinner menu to see what else was there. Good selection of small plates / mains / etc. Big thing that popped out was the unique beer on tap -- Austrian lager, German weiss beer, and a couple of Belgian ales including a fruit one. Oh, and Delerious Tremens - a beer that I have never seen on draft in Canada anywhere. Definitely will be back to try dinner and drinks. read more

I actually didn't read the yelp reviews before coming here, and for once I'm actually glad I didn't. The Marquis was a pleasant surprise on Granville Street. I think there are some kind of drink specials every night; the night we came it was $4 Crown Royals. I had the lamb shank and for $16 I thought it was pretty darned good! The portion was generous and the meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender and was falling off the bone. My boyfriend had the lobster gnocchi and the gnocchi was very soft and fluffy, and the chunks of lobster were generously sized. Overall we were pretty happy with the experience. The night that we were there the service seemed to be alright; maybe they've improved things since some of the previous reviews. read more

I wish this place were better. We live nearby, and it looks like it could be a nice, mid-price range place to hang out with some food and a drink. We went there once and weren't particularly impressed, but we thought we'd give it another shot. The food and cocktails were okay, mostly. The calimari was subpar. They did have some good beers on tap. I was surprised they had Stiegl, which I haven't seen outside its native Austria (I don't like it... but they love it in Vienna, so why not Vancouver?). Their bottle list was small but had good variety. The reasons for two instead of three stars: -For a weeknight, the music was up awfully loud. -The waitress consistently ignored one of the three of us--took our menus before he'd ordered, didn't ask him if he wanted salt & pepper but asked others, etc. -We waited so long to pay that one of us finally went up to a waitress--not ours, since we hadn't seen her in a while--at their bar's register with the check and our two credit cards, and she actually had him bring the credit card machine back to the table himself! The Marquis is a pretty odd little spot. On the one hand, the decor is marvelous, and the $3 - $5 drink specials make it, if nothing else, a great place to grab a quick cocktail or a beer, but the food and the menu....well, that's another subject entirely. Came in with some friends and, refreshingly, the place was not entirely decorated with sports tv screens (why always sports and why would I need to watch so much TV?). Instead, the cozy, wood-paneled spot was a pretty cool place, with that hard to find, intimate vibe that is just perfect for conversations and having a good time. If you show up at 9 or even 10, the place is still not humming with customers so the service was prompt and relatively good. I tried the Efes beer - a little dark Turkish beer, brewed with rice additives - very mellow and pretty decent for the price even though it falls flat when compared to....mmmm, Negro Modelo across the border. We ordered some yam fries and the meat and cheese platter as starters. Our "platter" came as fast as I could blink. And this is the jinx of it - it was mildly oxidized, relatively uninteresting salami interspersed by 4 slices of prosciutto. The plate that was obviously prepared in advance and sat for hours ready to be scooped up had, for reasons unknown, a generous amount of capers - NOT Olives, but capers. There were mouse-sized bits of mild-mannered, uninteresting cheese. We ordered some entrees but these were equally disappointing. The food could use a lot of work. As could the menu. It lacks direction. It needs simplicity and freshness. That said, it is a fine hangout for some drinks and a conversation. read more

The Marquis, other than the pricier Bin 942, is the only interesting place open after midnight where Broadway and Granville come together. On weekends it gets pretty lively, probably thanks to the $3 drink specials. There used to be brunch, but it doesn't seem to be open in the afternoon anymore; the late night food is just the kind of food you want to be eating late at night (greasy fries, etc.). The Marquis is the perfect stop if you want a quick drink between window shopping at Pottery Barn (10th and Granville) and Pottery Barn for Kids (14th and Granville). My only issue with this place is that the phone just keeps ringing and ringing whenever I try to make a reservation. read more

Being a Vancouverite who moved away a few years ago, one of my favourite things to do when I return to Vancouver is try places that have popped up in my absence. The Marquis Grill happened to be that place last night. After a nearby show, I headed to the Marquis in a group of 5. We got there about 10:30, and didn't have to wait at all to be seated nicely in a big leather booth in the back of the bar. Intended only to drink, but after spying the menu I just had to try a few things. I was pretty surprised that, for a place that had a pretty well versed cocktail, beer and hardbar selection, their food would be equally interesting. We ended up ordering: 1. Chips and trio drip (guacamole, salsa, and a bean dip) Good- chips were fresh and crispy, and dips were pretty nice, but (unlike most of the other dishes) the serving sizes were pretty sad). 2. Tuna tepmura bites. These were amazing. The only other place I've had tuna tempura bites is on Broadway at the Eatery, and they're easily one of my favourite things on the menu. These were pretty good, and had a nice little dipping sauce. At least 10 pieces. 3. Cheddar and potato perogies. These were more deep dried than I thought they would be, but they also tasted fresh, not from frozen, and were garnished with some really nicely done onions. 4. Yam Fries. Can't really go wrong with these, and these ones came with a great mayo chipotle dip. None of the appies were more than 10 bucks, and the server took the liberty of dividing the bill somewhat equally between us, which made paying a treat. Drink menu was great, and though it got a little loud toward the end, and the place is a LITTLE over-mirrored (seriously there are mirrors everywhere) I would definitely return. I've been 4 times now, so I feel like I can make an honest review. They're open quite late so it's a really great spot if you're looking for a drink on South Granville late at night. Just not for food. I've ordered food there 3 times. 2 times it came to the table. Both of those times I was rather underwhelmed. The first time I had the burger. It was mediocre. The bun was seriously stale though, and the fries way too salty. The second time, some friends and I shared some snacks. The perogeys were ok, the little grilled cheese sandwiches.... meh. Which takes me to the third time. I ordered my food and it never even came to the table. The service was AWFUL!!!!! My companion and I sat there, with no food and empty glasses, for over 10 minutes. How is that even possible in a room that small?!?! Again, if you're in the mood for a late night drink, it's not a bad spot. Reasonably priced drinks and a good selection of beers. I won't be back, though. Ouisi is just a few blocks up Granville and the service there is consistently good. read more

I'm not quite sure what to make of this place, but I don't think it knows what to make of itself either. The decor and menu suggest it's a classy European gastropub suitable for a pre-show dinner, but they also advertise $3 rum or $3 Corona on a sandwich board outside the restaurant. The drink specials look like they're trying to attract a different clientele than the rest of the menu, namely, poor students who live in the neighbourhood. Like me! To be honest, I've only been there for drinks. I stumbled upon this place with some girlfriends as we were heading to a different location for post-dinner drinks. The specials seemed to good to pass up, and we ended up being one of only two tables in the restaurant, so we got great service from a friendly, chatty waitress. The next time we went it was to kill time before dinner (someone didn't make a reservation at Shabusen) and again, we just wanted drinks. Ended up getting $3 rum and cokes, but this time it was much busier with a crowd who seemed ready to head off to the Stanley after dinner. Totally different experience with a rushed waitress and a time limit. I'm willing to go back and try their food as their menu did look delicious, but I don't have my hopes up considering the schizophrenic nature of the restaurant. When it comes to 3 dollar drink gin and tonic, I'm a pretty easy sell (as I'm sure is the case for any graduate student on a "limited" budget). The decor is warm and comfortable (although the wall of mirrors is a recipe for self-absorbtion. The drinks were decent (if a bit heavy on the tonic and soft on the gin) but the service was broaching on disasterous. It does NOT take 15 minutes to pour a simple cocktail (no matter how busy the place is). I would have knocked this down to a 2 star review but the place had a nice atmosphere and people seemed pretty happy to be out on a Wednesday, watching the game and enjoying a drink. read more

This is a good place to go if all you care about are drink specials. They often have tequila shots for 3$ and Peroni beer for 4$, highballs for 3$ and change. Also, some good options on the drink menu ranging from Hell's Gate Lager for the less discriminating tastes, to a nice selection of Belgian and other European beers. The service was terrible. Awful. I ordered 3 drinks while there, and all 3 times I had to get up, hunt my server down and let them know I wanted another drink.. Hello, stop by when you see all four people's glasses are empty. There were 3 servers/bartenders on and maximum 6 to 8 tables in there, so there's no real excuse for such poor service. It was packed yet she was so attentive, calm, and just all-around awesome. We ordered several of there new contacts and they were easily drinkable, great flavours, and super creative. We also had the progress which....get this.....FRESHLY SCRATCHED MADE! You have no friggin idea...but you should! Fries were also ordered to accompany the shots. Classic fries. The Marquis Grill is a great neighborhood bar in South Granville. They have a very noticeable sign hanging outside the bar entrance advertising their specials. It's a small bar, but it has a classy, clean European feel to it. I've been here a few times with friends, but where they shined was when I made a reservation for my fiance's surprise birthday party. They were really accommodating and allowed me to make a reservation for 20 on a Saturday night at 7:30 PM. Not only did they do that, but they also gave us great service for the entire night. From that, I'll definitely be coming back here for my birthday. I really enjoy coming here for their drink specials. On Saturday nights, each highball is $3.25, which is a fantastic deal. I'm a girl who really enjoys vodka-cranberry cocktails, and this is by far the classiest place to order them for the price you pay. I've had a few bites of some of their desserts, and they've all been delicious. I haven't actually tried any of their meals since I always come here after dinner. The meals seem a bit pricey compared to the cost of the drinks. Overall, this is a nice bar to go to for post-dinner drinks, or to catch up with friends. It's amazing that I never knew this place existed as apparently it's been around for quite some time! We were there for dinner on a Friday night and the great thing is that they do take reservations before 8pm and it was easy to get calling the same day! You can tell this place has a lot of regulars. The crowd is a really big mix from young to older with lively conversation and a nice vibrant atmosphere. The seating is comfortable and the service is friendly and casual. They have a really good selection of bar bites (we tried the yorkshire puddings, spinach and artichoke dip, mac & cheese, calamari, tempura tuna bites) and we also had a couple mains (Cranberry Apple Pork Loin and Jambalaya) and everything was good. I can't speak to the food here, as we didn't order any. I did notice the menu appeared to be a hodgepodge of several different types of cuisine (Russian, Italian, British...). A bit like they can't make up their mind on which type of food they want to specialize in. It's a small space (you could walk by it and miss it) but there is quite a bit of seating. This place was my local restaurant and I love it. The food was great, the drink specials are awesome $3.25 highballs and I have had pretty good service there too. They also have an amazing strawberry beer (fruli I think but it is quite sweet). I like it as a date place too. I went there twice but the location could have played a role in that. This place is probably one of the better places for food and drink specials on South Granville that still has a pretty decent atmosphere. It's got some comfy booths and seating at the bar at the front for small parties where and there are larger tables in the back. If you go to the Marquis for dinner don't look for anything special. This place is definitely more of a bar than a restaurant. But, they have tons of cheap appies and always have great drink specials. You can even get smaller versions of their Asparagus Ravioli and Lobster Ravioli for around $10. (I lucked out on a special where the large version, which wasn't that large. It was actually something like $11, which is rare for Vancouver). I'm not a huge fan of the lobster ravioli in general, but when my friend ordered it, it was actually pretty good. The Spicy Yam Fries are really good. They serve them with Chipotle Aioli and some spices. Just make sure you have some time to kill because the service can be spotty. I feel like every time I have been there I have had to order my next drink when I'm halfway through my first because the staff are so slow and/or easily distracted. read more
