15 Years of Loyalty Flushed Down the Drain by Greed and Incompetence I have been a loyal client of this establishment for 15 years and after today I will never step foot in this building again. If you value your peace of mind your time or your dignity I suggest you stay far away from Carol and her unprofessional staff. For over a decade I have consistently made the hour long drive each way just to support this business. Recently Carol made a manual error on her end charging me a tip and then refunding it herself. Instead of taking accountability for her own technical incompetence she coordinated with her receptionist and my therapist Bob to confront and ambush me about it two weeks later while I was there to relax. Even worse Carol and her staff had the audacity to embarrass me in front of the customers waiting behind me. The receptionist made me look like I do not pay when I have been paying and tipping every single time for the last 15 years. To treat a long term patron like a deadbeat over a mistake the owner made is a total slap in the face. To Carol: Chasing down a 15 year regular for a tip you accidentally refunded is the definition of poverty mindset management. You are so desperate for a few dollars that you are willing to harass and publicly humiliate a client who has given you thousands over the years. Having a therapist like Bob and a receptionist confront a client about money while they are there for a service is predatory tacky and a total violation of trust. It is clear that Carol has no idea how to run a professional business or how to treat the people who have kept her doors open for nearly two decades. I paid the missing money today just to prove I have more class than the owner of this shop but the bridge is burned. Carol you are a truly pathetic excuse for a business owner and a person. To coordinate a three person ambush against someone who has supported your livelihood for fifteen years shows exactly what kind of character you have. You are small minded and cheap and you clearly have zero respect for the people who pay your bills. You would rather play power games and humiliate a loyal patron over a twenty five dollar bill than admit you made a mistake on your own computer. Instead of just being a professional admitting you made a mistake and saying hey I am sorry we actually accidentally refunded this you chose to make it look like I was the one who couldn't pay. A real owner would have apologized for the confusion and handled it privately but you decided to smear a loyal customer's reputation to cover for your own stupidity. You made me look like a non-payer in front of a full waiting room even though I have never missed a payment or a tip in fifteen years. It is honestly disgusting that you sleep at night thinking this is how you run a professional shop. You have turned a place of healing into a place of hostility and greed. You are an absolute piece of work for trying to make me look like a thief in front of other people when I am the one who has been inconveniencing myself for an hour each way just to give you my business. You don't deserve another cent of my money or another second of my time. You should be embarrassed and you should honestly just close your doors if this is how you plan to treat human beings. read more

Update : I just spoke to the super rude owner /manager. And him instead of speaking to their years long customer in a nice and respectful tone, he was extremely rude and aggressive. This place has turned into a complete scam. They advertise $67 for a 60-minute massage and $87 for 90 minutes, but try booking and suddenly "every therapist sets their own rate" -- and surprise, it's always higher. Classic bait-and-switch. Even worse, they sell prepaid bundles at the advertised price, but when you try to use them, some therapists won't honor them or try to upcharge you. How is that even legal? If you're going to advertise fixed prices and sell packages, then honor them. Don't hide behind "independent contractor" excuses to avoid accountability. It's shady, misleading, and unethical. I've already reported them to the Los Angeles Department of Consumer Affairs and will be filing a complaint with the California Attorney General and FTC as well. I have been going to the Massage Place on Overland for around 10 years now and Nantha is my favorite. She is so sweet and kind and addresses all of your issues with her wonderful hands. But my favorite thing is the end, when she covers your back with a Hot towel, such a heavenly feeling! I also love Kate, she is very good and applies just the right amount of pressure that I need for my aches and pains. I go to the Massage Place 2-3 times a month and it is a heavenly experience for my old bones (I'm 77 and get lots of aches and pains these days). Cannot say enough good things. I've been having scary painful nerve pain for the last week or so. We remembered that my boyfriend's sweet grandmother gave us gift carts to this place a few months back, so we booked last minute yesterday and went in. I ended up with a massage therapist named Thomas who went to WORK on my back and neck. This guy was digging in tendons and working giant knots out. He knew the nerve and the path it took and spent an hour truly working to help bring me some pain relief. While I'm sore from the massage (it would be weird if I wasn't), I woke up for the first time in a week without shooting nerve pain down my left side. 10/10 would recommend read more

Had a very great experience here! This has been my first time here and the Swedish massage was amazing! Sam was my masseuse today and she was so sweet. Right away she asked if there were any problems she needed to know about and any specific places I might want her to concentrate in. I do a lot of desk work and I asked to work on my lower back and neck. She did just that! She checked to make sure the pressure wasn't too much for me and to to make sure I was ok. Just spoke with Michael the manager. He was very rude and tried to rush from the start. I read the reviews about the horrible massages and mandatory 65% tips. I questioned him on this and he said that it's true and if I didn't like it I could refund the gift certificate I got. Clearly this punk shouldn't be a manager and the reviews are right. He's admitting to mandatory 35% and within a 10 second phone call said to refund a gift certificate that was given to me. Really bad business. If you have a bad manager that effects the employees and they end up being just as rude as this manager who thinks it's OK to have mandatory 65% tips when your giving terrible massages from rude employees who are copying the managers behaviour. I love this place but I don't understand WHY they think tips are MANDATORY. Don't get me wrong I was leaving $20-25 tip for a one-hour massage. But then I get text messages saying tips are a minimum of $30.00. I called to complain and they said some of the therapists are 'independent contractors' and they expect $45 dollars as a tip. Terrible experience in this place. The massage therapist did not reply when I greeted her and aggressively responded by telling me to "move," when I was explaining to her the situation with my pain. I tried again, in which she ignored me and told me to move. I told her I felt uncomfortable, and she left the room saying "she doesn't want the massage." I spoke to the manager in the front in which he simply responded that he gave me a refund and there was nothing more to talk about. This place lacks professionalism and hospitality. I've been coming here bi-weekly for 5 years. I guess losing a customer who tips well is worth the cost of one bad experience. I came here for an hour long massage. Requested deep tissue as usual. Masseuse not only didn't even touch my body, but also ended the massage 10 minutes early. When I informed the staff, they told me they would "talk to the manager and this isn't the first complaint." Not good enough. You should refund a customer who has been coming there for years. read more

I get massages once a week and my go to therapist is John at overland who also works at the Palisades' location. He knows my body, and tackles the areas that need work. If John isn't available with my schedule I use Thomas for deep tissue massages. He really gets the knots out. read more

Great value hands down. For a full 60 minutes I paid $47. The masseuse overall was good but there was a bit of a language barrier. Her stomach also gurgled a few times, right at my ear level. Sounded as if she had not eaten lunch. This posed a challenge for me to fully relax and be in the moment. I don't need fancy spa perks to create an enhanced massage experience especially if Massage Place reduces overhead costs and therefore massage prices with the minimum - massage rooms for independent contractors and a bathroom. However, it would've been nice to have a room to decompress in after my massage. Instead I headed to the reception area to pay and my masseuse gave me a cup of water. There is parking in the strip mall and it's right off the 10 freeway. I would give this place another try but am willing to pay more for a better experience. read more

My husband recently went there and the experience was far different from our first one. Even though their prices seem low they in actuality are not because they almost require a 40% tip. As my husband was going in he saw a man being chased out by his massage therapist who was demanding a higher tip. From what he heard the man gave her $10 on a $45 massage and she was saying that signs are posted around their place saying he needs to give her a higher tip. That is so tacky. A tip is a reflection of your value for the service you received, an additional token of appreciation. If there is a required amount, that's not called a tip that is a Charge! That is part of the cost of the massage. There were signs posted around the place again requiring a 30-40% tip. And on the door of his therapists room there was a sign saying that 40-50% was required. BOTTOM LINE: if you're coming here for the massages and you like them, then by all means keep coming. But if you think this place is a value then you should find another place. For the price we had to pay for then massage and the REQUIRED TIP we have gone to better places and had a better experience. Their business practice is shady and rude and that is reason enough for me to never return! read more

I was able to get a last minute deep tissue massage with Nancy on Sunday. I appreciated that the rooms were fully private (not a curtain connecting the rooms) and it was a great 60 minute massage. They also have 2 large bathrooms in the back and a water station in the front. They do suggest a pretty sizable tip given their prices but I was happy to support. read more

I used to be a regular here for years . But a recent experience was just awful. Be careful if you even name Therapist this place will consider it a "request "and they will make you pay a $40 tip. So do not mention any names when you book even from a list of names given to You of who is available . The owner should really be careful who she hires for the front desk to give appointments. The front desk person I spoke to was a little teenage girl who was extremely immature and a drama queen and would not stop being a cry baby. Even after the owner and I spoke, and the owner agreed that I could get my massage, she still would not let me go to the massage room. Because she decided to go into room and get all the therapists in the room and have just have me wait in the waiting room at which point I just left. The owner should really hire people who are mature and professional to take care of her business. This is not a kindergarten. read more

I've come here twice, and have received different experiences. During the first time, the masseuse was great - less conversational with me, and wasn't too hard in terms of pressure. However, the second time, the masseuse had too much pressure for a massage I would regard as "medium" pressure. I have yet to come here to get a feel for which masseuse I am sticking to. The price is OK for West LA, and getting an appointment here is relatively easy on a Sunday. They have specials and deals if you buy more massages at once, which is cool. read more

For me: mental tension will every now and then translate itself into an aggressive, painful muscle spasm along the shoulder blades and neck. Being at the computer for most of my waking days, poor posture, spastic sleeping positions, stress and an old shoulder injury~ my upper back/ shoulder muscles will lock making it hard to move around and function when this happens. Found this place randomly while in West LA (via yelp of course) after waking up to the same old pain i'm much too familiar with. It's hard to find someone that knows what they are doing with the muscle. I've been to massage places where they either don't hit the muscle deep enough or they end up hurting me more than I entered. I consider both instances a waste of money. But hey~ any massage is better than nothing. * This joint was an absolute God-send. I was "man-handled" by the gentle bear called David Shao and I LOVED IT. I found my go-to-guy for massages, especially when this stupid body of mine gives out. David Shao is fabulous. I'm already thinking about scheduling my next appointment with him before this wretched exam. I will caution -- as others have here -- David is the guy to go to if you can take a man-handling. I mean this is a good way. I'm no athlete but I do play sports, work out, yoga.. and I still have swimmer's shoulders (think: female linebacker). I may be only 5'2" in stature but I am (unfortunately?) not your dainty little asian girl. I can punch a boy and use the bench at the gym. *insert evil smile* If you're looking for a soothing gentle rub down, ask for another person with the front desk. If you can take a little pain and have someone really get elbows deep into rubbing out knotted muscles to a point where you're drooling, David's the guy for you. * Let's start from the beginning. I have absolutely no idea what's around here. Just bee-lined to business from my review class. There was a Mediterranean cafe next door (They have good reviews. Note to self to try it next time. Aroma Cafe~ old woman there was a bit rude, young woman nice) and a small parking lot with even smaller stalls. You can park on the street if you've got a nice car and are afraid of dings. Guy on the phone was UBER nice. Booked me same day and within 1/2 an hr of my phone call. Also linked me to David. When I first saw David, he seemed like a shy, potbellied Asian man with big ol' bear paws. Very quiet ~ almost to a point where I wasn't sure what I should be doing. I think he said three phrases to me. "Hi I'm David" / "You ok?" / "Let me know if it's too hard." Super sweet tho. He doesn't really use oils or lotions, which was a first for me in a massage but by the end I was really glad that he didn't. He uses a little oil when digging the elbows into your back. But overall, he will use his big paws to unkink all the knots. It was like he just shook me out like a wrinkled sheet. He also ends with a scalp massage which was nice too. I was all drunk-eyed and wobbly by the end of the massage. It was great. I also appreciate how he gives you the full hour of massage. You get what you pay for and then more. I can move MUCH more freely now. He's now got my vote as the go to massage guy. David~ you can manhandle me all you want. Earned my 20+% tip for sure. * I like that this place does massage and no spa. If I want a spa massage, I'll go to a spa. Here- I wanted a massage that would fix my neck and back, and that is exactly what I got. Will absolutely definitely return for David. Recommended. Great Fabulous Service with front reception. I had been aching all over without other flu symptoms and had been feeling nauseous for two days... enough to cancel my sushi date (that was to be omakase at either Mori or Sasabune.. we are talking ill). Based on Yelp reviews and Yelp reviews alone (I am starting to question whether it is healthy to rely so much on Yelp..), I chose the Massage Place. I started writing first how I came to my choice but it got too long so it's at the bottom of this review now. So I call. It would help establishments to learn that the receptionist gives its first impression, and Monica the receptionist was courteous and spoke soothingly - which isn't necessary for a restaurant, per se, but for a massage place is good. She asked whether I am comfortable with a masseur (male therapist vs. masseuse) and recommended a couple of people based on my requested time and description (prefer Swedish/deep tissue, have typical shoulder and back pains, pulled hamstring, swollen calves, help). Funny - I stuttered cuz I was reading a previous reviewer's review and was trying to find out what her masseur's name was. I wasn't recommended Oak; I went with Joey. Knowing that this place is a no-frills place (no showers and slippers, etc., get in get out), I took a bath to warm up before my appointment. I was hoping Joey wouldn't be the garrulous type - I was low on energy and not feeling small talk - and thinking of how to word that without being rude. When I met Joey, he shook my hand. He asked me about my experience with massages and Massage Place. I almost feel like he sensed my state of being (I realize that could sound frou frou) and he didn't waste words nor time. When he came into the room, he asked, "Not much oil, right?" How did he know that? And from then, it was all surprises. Surprise that my back was more out of line than I had thought (he didn't have to tell me that). Surprise that it felt like he was piecing my vertebrae together into a line, then adding my shoulder blades and my arms (it was like he was putting puzzles back together... I had never had that kind of.. how do I say this.. physically logical? experience before). Surprise that he knew where I had hurt and that he tailored the techniques he used on each side of my legs. Surprise that despite it usually taking me awhile to relax completely, I completely trusted him. Surprised that I could actually feel my circulation increasing through my hamstring and legs. Surprise that my breathing changed and my inhales and exhales lengthened on their own. And the biggest surprise - that my digestive system was responding and I wasn't nauseous anymore. Throughout the massage, I kept having to pull myself back to enjoying it from thinking how sad it was that the hour would be over. It was the best technical massage I've had (vs. just a feel-good one, which, those are wonderful too) and I walked out feeling like I was floating. I am actually thinking about going back in an hour -_-;; It was that good. And they open 'til 10. Sweet :) I am home now and going through bottles of water with my phone still on silent. That visit made today feel like a detox day (which my love of food and being around phone/internet all day have kept me from ever having done it, hahaha). Cannot believe I am taking this long to write a review, but this Massage Place has made an immediate follower out of this skeptic. Then I called Century West but found out that Christine doesn't work there anymore and that Rene only works Fridays. Today is Tuesday. I called Ken Ng but he wasn't available when I called and there's a Massage Place location literally across the street from me so I made the appointment there. Ken called back, btw - and he sounds like a genuinely nice guy so I may give it a go at a future time. I don't know why but his two reviewers didn't leave the price in their reviews albeit alluding to it so I will honor that and not reveal that here either. Massage Therapy is obviously higher-priced than other ones so I figured I'll try the other places first and if they're no good, I'll go. Don't mind paying top dollars for high quality goods and services, but not considering lower-priced places that may be as good first is indecent (and unintelligent) money-flaunting. Seriously, some reviewers: "$100+ is cheap for a massage in LA!" Really? I call that lack of research. That, and I get annoyed by gushy reviews. I have had many massages all over the world, and have to say -- Kate is as good, and more often than not better, than anyone I've ever met. I almost didn't want to write this review out of fear that she'd get booked up or poached and I'd no longer get to have her as a masseuse. She's just that good. The other masseuses at the Massage Place are a bit more of a mixed bag -- but they're never bad. The range basically runs from decent to exemplary. Had a Bad experience here. Worst Massage ever. My wife gave me a gift Certificate for an hr. Massage...I finally used it. I am an older guy who is well dressed, Fit, and well groomed. When I approached the desk, there were 2 gals there- One older...one younger. The younger one points to the receptionist to select the other woman. I see this, and I figuered -if you're going to be rude- Please don't let me see. I go into my room and I had the worst massage ever. The woman left the sheet on me and massaged me over the sheet..WTF......I was showered and am fairly good looking with NO diseases.....I will never go back here again........I don't know if my masseuse was new or what the problem was........But I just left afterwards. Loved my experience here. Clean, friendly staff, calm and soothing private massage rooms. Also very affordable! I had always thought massages were at least a hundred dollars but a 60-minute full body massage was $47 and I thought I'd give it a go. Ayanna was great. She was friendly but also very considerate and asked me multiple times if she needed to go softer or harder. I think I even fell asleep at one point it was so relaxing. She ends on a head massage and it was magical. I did have trouble finding parking since the lot is very small. Because this is a no frills operation, everything comes down to how well your specific massage therapist delivers on your needs. I had Fred, who provided a mix of Swedish and deep tissue. He was very nice, quiet, used unscented oil, and had the right pressure for me. I took away one star because I asked him to focus on my neck, shoulders, and back (where I carry all my stress) and although he spent more time on that area than others, it wasn't enough to work the knots out completely. There also was something wrong with his CD player because he kept having to stop and start it during the massage, which was distracting. So I'll be back to try out another therapist until I find that 5 star experience! All the pros and cons noted by others are correct -- great price but they expect a big tip so figure on spending at least $62 for that $47 massage; clean; free parking; same day availability; pleasant staff; thin walls; and, that first room next to the receptionist definitely can be noisy. read more

I know that this review is years late, but I have not had a chance to write it until now. I am writing this review for the manager Julie (who might or might not still be with the company). Back in 2010/2011, I came here for a massage and when I left, Julie managed to follow me to my car after and went into a whole 2-5 minute speech about how their masseus work hard and that I was no longer welcome back at their location for not leaving a proper tip. She even used the words and I quote "shame on you." Come 2/3 years later, I called to schedule another appointment at this location, (which I don't know why), but Julie called me beforehand to remind me that I was not allowed back at this location. I did not realize this at the time, but all I have to say is what a way to harass someone and good luck with trying to get more business after the unacceptable and childish behavior you set for your customers. Working in customer service, I know this is NOT the way to treat a person and hopefully someone can see this review and take the appropriate actions if necessary to correct this type of behavior, especially after all of the negative reviews that i'm still seeing about this location and company. read more
