Believe the hype! Good food does come from small restaurants. This tiny unassuming restaurant with the big reviews deserves every five star review it gets. The burger, voted one of the best in the Hudson Valley is phenomenal as is its vegetarian counterpart. The fries are not an afterthought. Actually, they vie for top billing! As much as I really enjoyed my grass-fed, local-beef, cooked-to-order burger here, I have to say this is the first time I ever thought a crafted veggie burger looked even more interesting than the burger I was eating. My dining companion who ordered couldn't stop raving about it (and he's used to cooking pork loins on his own gas grill). It was so thick he had to use the knife and fork they gave him to cut it rather than eat it as a hand-held burger. And the slices of avocado under it were a nice plus and nice tough. My cheeseburger was no-frills, but that's the way I like them, so that I taste the flavor of the meat instead of the condiments. But what really impressed me were the fries. These were like "7 Guys" fries, definitely local and naturally cut and cooked to perfection. I had to remember I also had a burger to eat. Oh, and the music playing was a lot of fun too. I made sure to pick up a menu, too. This place has a great breakfast menu, and I got to see some of those items prepared as late breakfasts while I was having an early lunch. The food is very good and they give you very large portions. But frankly, I could do with human portions and not so ridiculously expensive. The meatloaf sandwich was HUGE. Who can eat that much ground beef at one sitting, plus french fries? It must be a day's worth of calories and fat. They charge almost the same for a chicken sandwich as they do for a Shrimp "Po Boy". That makes no sense. I just read in another review that they have no bathroom? Seriously? Now you know they have one......they are just not providing the paying customers (who are paying a lot) with bathroom facilities. Is it a restaurant or a gas station? I think that is tacky. Rhinebeck is a tourist town that is very full of itself. EVERYTHING is expensive. This place fits right in. Full of itself and very overpriced. You could get a better meal in Manhattan for less money. And we all know how expensive New York City can be. read more

Husband has the grilled cheese and the house made potato chips were the most bizarre chips we had ever seen. Pure white, No salt, completely tasteless. It's a nice place to have and the people seemed pleasant however for a Mac and Cheese which had no taste and a Berger with bacon and fries ( nothing to drink it was 30 dollars. I think it was a little expensive for what they gave us. And the place had no bathroom. No even a pot-a potty. So my thoughts are if you happen to have a few dollars to burn and don't need a bathroom. This is the place for you. read more

Truly this was one of the worst dining experiences of our life. The female owner is horrible. We were treated very rudely when we asked to use the restroom. We waited over an hour for some cold sandwiches. The food was nothing special. Not to mention I was pregnant and we were with my husband's handicapped mother. Pros: Perfect fries, perfectly cooked eggs, the mac 'n cheese is excellent, great lemonade, tea, or mixed plus those famous baked goods done just right! Cons: Limited seating, the female owner is a bit moody and off-putting, outdoors seating is too noisy with the garage in back, and the veggie burger has a center texture and taste that needs some work Still, this spot has my favorite food in the area, isn't hippy dippy in the slightest, and hasn't failed me or my husband yet. read more

We wanted a place to eat that offered outdoor seating during this Covid time. Rhinebeck has many places with outdoor dining, but we now have a baby! And we wanted a place with a bit more privacy for our sweet baby so we decided to go back to the Matchbox Cafe. We had been here about a year ago and our time there today did not disappoint. Delicious homemade fries with shrimp paboy sandwich stuffed with fried shrimp, lettuce, avocados, tomatoes, and a homemade orange looking sauce. Delicious!! And the owner was an absolute sweetheart as usual.. he gave me a free cookie and waved to our baby from afar! I really didn't know what to expect once we pulled into the parking lot. The small unassuming building didn't look like it could hold very much of anything much less a great burger joint. But a great burger is indeed what you find within. I had heard from others how good the burgers were but I had to try for myself. We placed our order at the counter and waited about 15-20 minutes. The owners were exceptionally nice offering us beverages while we waited. I ordered the MATCHBOX BURGER hand formed, local grass fed grain finished beef served on a toasted bun with a heap of hand cut, double cooked fries. The burger itself is probably one of the best I have had. It was a thick juicy patty with an incredible sauce on top. The fries were very good as well. Now you will pay a little more than you would for a burger elsewhere. I do believe your getting your moneys worth. I would recommend this place. read more

WOW. I found this place on Yelp, and it blew away even the amazing reviews already online. FYI, it's first come, first served, so grab a seat when you see one! Very small space, but worth the wait. My dad had the veggie burger, and I tried it, and honestly, it was delicious. And that's coming from someone who eats meat three meals a day and would never endorse a veggie burger. So good that I'm gonna go pick some up from where they're sold in nyc (somewhere in midtown east)! I had the chicken salad sandwich and it was also just perfect. The fries are delicious as well--get a lot of those! For dessert we tried the ice cream sandwich and double espresso brownie. Tbh, I've had better sandwiches, but the brownie was to die for. Great little spot, perfect for take out or eating in. BYOB. on a nice day you can walk from the center of Rhinebeck village, otherwise just a quick drive. Inside it's pretty small and cramped but also cozy; the staff is super helpful and very attentive. Usually the same folks working and I am sorry to be blanking on their names right now! Usually I get the farm burger which is vegan if you leave off the mayo and my partner gets the cheeseburger. Portions are generous and the fries served with the meals are ample. For the farm burger, the patty is homemade and they really lay on thick the avocado. My last visit I decided to split the farm burger with a friend because it's so ample and they kindly split it for us and served it on separate plates with separate fries. Wow, that was a terrible experience! My mom has a service dog and they told us that we had to leave even though she is a fully certified golden retriever dog(not just one of those emotional support dogs). They said we either had to eat outside(it was pouring rain), or leave. My mom's dog is was fully behaving because she was working but we ended up leaving. This is actually illegal to do but we didn't feel like getting into it with the store so we just left. We have never had this experience before where a business doesn't allow us to eat because of a certified service dog, and I definitely don't wish it on anyone else. They also waited to tell us that we couldn't eat there until after we had already spent 80 dollars for 3 people. I can't speak for the food because we didn't get the chance to try it, but the way they handled that really rubbed me off the wrong way about the companies work ethic. read more

My mother and I have been coming up this way for many years and we love when we find new places. Matchbox Cafe has been here 6 years and all I can say is I wish we found it sooner. The food is delicious and the service is terrific. The portions are quite large and everything is fresh. From the homemade veggie burger to the freshly baked rhubarb pie, everything was mouthwatering. We stopped into the Matchbox Cafe on our way back from delivering gifts at the fairgrounds. The kids with us were not excited about our choice of places to eat but they reluctantly agreed. It was a small, unassuming stone building on the side of the road with few cars but it was late and we were hungry. The interior was small, with just a few tables and a large counter, filled with awesome looking baked goods; giant cookies, brownies, etc. they had a small menu and a blackboard of specials. The owners were very friendly,greeting us if they knew us. We made our menu choices. One order of the grass-fed beef burger with bacon and cheese. Cooked to perfection and very juicy and tasty. It came with hand cut, natural fries also cooked crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. Another order of chicken Parmesan sandwich from the blackboard. It was HUGE! The chicken was moist and crispy with a generous amount of mozzarella and a delicious sauce. The bun was dwarfed in comparison to the chicken. It also came with a side of fries. We took most of that home because it was too much to eat. Then there was an order of portobello mushroom sandwich, another blackboard special. It was a juicy portobello mushroom laced with balsamic served on a toasted sesame bun with garlic mayo, which add a great flavor, lettuce tomato and melted cheese. Had to cut it with knife and fork because it was too thick to eat. I ordered the veggie burger sandwich from the menu. It came on a toasted bun with garlic mayo, tomato, lettuce and avocado. It was also served with the delicious fries which normally I don't eat but once I tasted one, I ate them all! I discovered the veggie burger is one of their specialties which are available frozen for purchase online. They are very proud of their product and when I ordered, the gentleman who took our order seemed to beam and told us about the veggie burgers. They make them fresh daily right there in there restaurant. Totally worth it. I had to cut mine up with a fork and knife to eat because it was too big. I had some warm cider, also from the blackboard and it was great on a cold night. The kids requested the hot chocolate to go. The lady said it takes time to make it because they have to melt the chocolate! It was 'real' hot chocolate which I explained meant it wasn't a powder from a pouch. Mounded with whipped cream, the kids loved it! They eat got a sweet (White chocolate chunk cookie about and 1-1/3" thick) and a Shmoogie (2 chocolate cookies sandwiched with chocolate ganache dipped in chocolate!) which they were too full to eat until the next day.
