Matchbox cafe has what I think to be the best burger in the Hudson Valley. They are consistent, the quality of the ingredients is always great, and they are reasonably priced. Expect to have to wait a while on your food(the breakfast is also fantastic) knowing that it is worth the wait. My fiancé and I frequent this cute little cafe year round and we always leave satisfied. We even ordered the Thanksgiving dinner from them last year and will definitely be doing that again. This place is as good as it gets. I can't say enough about how thoroughly crafted their breakfast food is here. I come from the Jersey Shore where breakfast sandwiches are everywhere and it's a staple of our lives so I know a good sandwich when I eat one. Matchbox though???? UNBELIEVABLE! I had their bacon egg and cheese with avocado and I felt so warm and sooooo content eating that work of art. They get all of their ingredients locally and you can tell the owners take their time to ensure that each item between the bread is cooked to perfection. The eggs were scrambled with the cheese inside so it was creamy and had just the right amount of saltiness. The bacon was thick but had a good crispiness to it. The avocado was beautifully ripe and soft so blend in with the texture. They barely use any of the sauces because anything more than just a small spread would be an insult to the masterpiece of a breakfast sandwich they scientifically engineered just for you. Breakfast food is my favorite and I can have it for every meal of the day, but if I lived around Rhinebeck I think I literally would eat it 3 times a day from Matchbox until the heart attack from the cumulative high cholesterol intake consumes me. After sitting in the car for a minute, a woman from the restaurant came out and asked us to leave if we weren't coming in. Very rude attitude, not friendly at all. This is the charming lunch spot from my most delicious dreams. Honestly, it's like the owners here at Matchbox Cafe trespassed their way into my subconscious in Being John Malkovich fashion and took notes of what would constitute a good meal. The food here is at the very tippy top of great food I had the special of the day -- a sweet sausage topped with onions and peppers, alongside fries. The amount of food on my plate would set back my diet about 3 years, but it was well worth it. Before I even got to the sausage, I ate a mountain of fresh, delicious, and perfectly cooked onions and peppers. The sausage itself was still warm and juicy underneath... a treasure spot after the veggies. It oozed delicious fatty oil with each bite -- the kind of sausage you fantasize about when you're at a ballgame, but never come true. My fiance had their chicken salad sandwich... except she substituted the avocado (sensitive to it) with bacon (good substitution, i'd say!), topped with lettuce and tomato with a side of chips. This sandwich was so large, we had to call an emergency surgeon to come over, unhinge her jaw, and fit the stomach in her mouth. Just kidding... but you get the point. Kudos to whoever can finish their meals. But please please please save room for dessert. Their home-baked desserts has been all the rage in previous reviews, and it did not disappoint. We got our goodies to go... we got a rice krispy that Rick Moranis blew up to life-size, an oreo cookie that was dipped in by chocolate 18 times, and a chocolate chip cookie. They were all delicious. No complaints here at all! Definitely going to try to red velvet cake here next time. Other notes... -- The owners were super friendly and attentive to our needs. You could tell they care a lot about every single customer and their comfort. -- It's a relatively small spot... enough seating for about 20 people inside comfortably. Thank you for continuing to "Wow" me the last few months. After several visits (and even bringing in my brothers who later mentioned they were unimpressed - except for the big Rice Krispy Treat bars), you make me coming back for more. Yes, prices are high, but it's worth the extra. I came in yesterday. I wasn't really knowing exactly what to have. Originally found the Matchbox Dog, but then saw the price. I didn't really like the description: as it had multiple items I tend to take off (not my cup o' tea) so I looked further. I came to the Grilled Chicken Sandwich and despite changing one cheese (from Mozzarella to something else), I was thoroughly impressed. Throughout the cooking process, was told that the Grilled Chicken Sandwich was the sandwich with the longest cook time) but it was worth it. I was presented with a sandwich that at first I couldn't even sink my mouth into fully without getting grease all over me - it was juicy, spicy and just overly delectable and just the way I pictured it when I read about it and thinking back to just how many burgers I had that I could juice myself up). I had to take off a layer of the tomato (and several unappealing lettuce slices) they stuffed on there to be something I could bite into, but otherwise it was worth it. (I took a picture which will be displayed on the profile page with this review.) Later, I knew it was coming up to their closing time. The owner put two and two together and thanked me for bring him more business (from the other day), and although I really didn't want to mention it, I tried to keep that low-key. After saying "thank you" he thought my brothers were around and looked out the window for a moment (thinking they could be around the corner - but they weren't). As I was about to leave, I knew I couldn't leave without a Rice Krispy treat bar and something I thought I'd keep forgetting after seeing it so many times - Homemade Ice Cream Sandwich. I went up and paid, they placed the Ice Cream Sandwich in a bag and I walked out. I was getting towards closing time, I had had some great food, I almost didn't want to walk out it was so warm and humid, but after a rainstorm that kept some Uber business away for quite some time, I knew my time was up for the day and I had to force myself out. I don't mind coming down. I'm on a strained budget, so I hate not giving Tips, but continue to Wow me and you'll keep getting more money. The fact that this business is family run is very interesting. It's small, but works for the business they have. If they charged $20 per cup of hot cocoa I would gladly pay it. Such a cute place to dine. It's tiny as can be, but really lovely. The building is all stone and a wonderful piece of Hudson Valley charm. The owners are former New York City restauranteurs. And they really know how to get a delicious meal into your hands quickly without making the atmosphere feel rushed. The sandwiches are heavenly and made from the freshest ingredients. I favor the chicken salad sandwich. The soups (served during colder months only) will warm your soul and fill your senses with wonderful flavor. Don't get me started on the cookies and sweets! They are the reason I cannot dine here regularly. The sweets are irresistible. You are floating after one bite. I love their cookies and the marshmallow squares. There is not a lot of parking space. But I have always managed to find a spot. And during the warmer months the lack of abundant indoor seating is compensated by plenty of space outside. A small old gas station off the beaten path. I do mean small and kinda hard to find but we'll worth the search! Owned by a retired couple, very friendly and hospitable and a hardworking team. Fresh ingredients and some fantastic grass fed beef burgers! Awesome toasted bun! Grilled cheese was excellent. No alcohol but soda and fresh baked cookies including an awesome oatmeal raisin. They've got several portable heaters that only provide heat directly in front. Place should have proper heating(ductless would do the trick) for cold days such as when we visited (mid 30's & windy). Friendly, garrulous owner couple that tend to play up their "NYC Sass" -- which means sometimes they come off as a bit saucy or sharp with customers. Not MEAN or anything, just... abrupt. But hey, at least they are paying attention, unlike many places around here. If it's lunch rush and they are busy, service can take a bit, so this is not the place to go if you are in a big hot hurry. (The fried chicken in particular takes a long time - good, but slow - and it does say so on the menu). I have now been to matchbox twice and both visits are deserving of even higher than a 5 star review! Firstly, the food is unbelievably tasty. Everything I've had here is the best version of that thing that I've ever had. The veggie burger is tender on the inside and has some crunch on the outside - the texture of a well cooked falafel but with an entirely unique flavor. The portobello sandwich had punchy flavor on crunchy sesame bun with smooth avocado. Secondly, the owners Sam and Joann are attentive, engaging, kind and humorous. Served with a nice light coleslaw. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich with homemade potato chips!! It was the best chicken salad I have had north of the mason dixon.
