They couldn't stop talking about how delicious it was, and we couldn't resist trying it ourselves since it was just a short walk from our hotel. The hype was real! There was a constant line waiting to be seated, and making reservations is best, especially for a party of three or more. If you're a party of two without a reservation, you can be seated sooner since they have many tables for two. We were fortunate to be seated quickly, while other larger parties had to wait a considerable amount of time. The wait was worth every bite! I highly recommend their Fried Haddock & Chips, which is under the MAYFAIR CLASSICS side of their menu. It comes with three sauces, but their tartar sauce is unreal delicious. Other options include mushy peas, chip shop curry sauce, and HP gravy. They also offer gluten-free options. My wife enjoyed the fried cod (gf) along with a side of fried shrimp. Fish and chips is equally difficult to ruin as it is to perfect. I'd say this place has done neither. I ate here twice - once at the very cramped counter, and another time via delivery. I'm reviewing the in house visit because the delivered food was predictably pretty cold and soggy. The in house was much better - very hot - thee chips had a nice crisp to them that sadly didn't last. The batter on the fish was pretty standard. Probably the best fish and chips I've ever had. You can choose between haddock or cod--I went with the haddock while my friend had the cod, and both were fresh, flavorful, and served in portions so generous that neither of us could finish. For €25, it's absolutely worth it. The line of people wrapped around the block says it all, but thankfully we had reservations and were seated straight away. The space itself is small and cozy, which explains the wait, and the interior has a really charming vibe. We visited the original location near the West End, though they now have a second spot in Knightsbridge. I also have to mention the mojito--it was one of the best I've ever had, perfectly balanced without being overloaded with mint leaves. I love a restaurant that is accommodating to the gluten free girlies! Not only were they accommodating but they took it so seriously and even had their manager speak to me personally to take my order. I of course ordered the fish and chips which were absolutely divine. The fish was so light and flaky and the chips provided a nice bite. I also had the side salad which had a nice dressing to it. The area around is beautiful. 45 minute wait on a Wednesday at 7pm. Provided mobile so they texted, then you have 10 mins to get there. Lots of shopping in area, and a statue of Ronald Reagan / Berlin Wall chunk 2 blocks down to look at. It was windy and a bit cool so we selected inside seating. We were placed at the tiny counter in the front window, on tall stools. Took over 10 minutes for someone to give us menus and take our drink order. Our waiter informed us that my wife's drink choice was out of stock due to a delivery error. But we went in the basement to look and came back with the cider of choice. Much appreciated. Due to our seating position we were able to view the table outside directly in front of us and we saw that the standard fish and chips was absolutely huge. So we decided to split one and got the fried mushroom app as well. Appetizer was very good; mushrooms were giant. Fish was pretty good (again huge, about 16 inches). Lots and lots of chips (fries). Table malt vinegar, but you have to ask for ketchup if you want it. Comes with tartar sauce, mushy peas (!) and gravy for dipping. I could have eaten the whole fish by myself but 2 of us could not finish the fries. Just too many, and hard to get more tap water to wash them down. Compared to US, very expensive, but not out of line for London. Also no tipping in Uk, so consider that as well. Overall was 2nd best meal we had all week. We wanted some really good fish and chips while we were in London so we made the 30 min trek here from our hotel. There was a short line of people waiting for tables when we arrived. They told us when we sat down that there was a 45-60 min time limit for the table and they only take cards as payment, no cash. They are very busy but the food is very good. Service was friendly. Without a doubt, this was probably the best fish and chips I had while I was in London. There is a reason there was a long line to wait outside to get in here because it might even be the best fish and chips in London. I did my research to find the best fish and chips in this city, and I really do not think the reviews exaggerate anything, this is a well done plate and deserves all the accolades. The fish is the perfect fry (get the cod, or just listen to your server), and with the mountain of fries and the mushy pies, tartar sauce (a bit onion forward, but it works), and the curry sauce work so well with this plate of food. I was just shoveling it in, not caring that I was a tourist for the time I was eating this. A nice cider makes this all go down nicely. Be prepared for a bit of a wait if you go during lunch. But the service is quick so you will not be waiting long for your food once you are inside. It is order, eat, get out, with little fanfare but with a great outcome. We had a reservation at 7pm and the hostess said we had an hour and a half so to my surprise at the 45min mark they were trying to give us the bill however we asked for a dessert menu to which the server said she had to go check. My guess is if you don't have reservation you have less time allotted and I get they want to flip tables as soon as possible because again there's a never ending line of people trying to get in but also allow your patrons to order whatever they want. It ruins the experience when because you want to sit someone else at my table you have to "ask" of I can order dessert?! We were able to order the sticky pudding which ended up being incredible but after 3 different times that the woman I'm assuming was in charge last night saying to clear table 19, which I can only assume was my table, I took my time eating my dessert, I had 90 mins and thanks to her being so rude I was going to make sure to sit there for every one of those 90 minutes. The fish and chips were also delicious, it's a giant piece of cod which is definitely shareable. Getting a reservation to dine here was a challenge at first but we found a few openings for lunch via OpenTable. Seating is at a premium here as space is limited. Mayfair Chippy is a bit pricey (25 pounds for a fish + chip combo), but worth the hype and the best fish and chips I've ever had. The store itself is quite small and seating is relatively limited, so it's likely that you'll have to end up waiting outside unless you made a reservation ahead of time. As for the food itself - you're allowed to select either the cod or the halibut for the combo, and it comes with a sizable serving of chips (fries) and 3 "sauces" - tartar sauce, mushy peas, and one of either gravy or curry sauce. We got both options, and I'd say that the cod was thicker and meatier but the halibut had a crispier fry. Both were delicious though so you can't really go wrong with either option. The fries were decent, a good amount of salt (and you can add more salt/vinegar if you want). Honestly, I found the mushy peas, curry, and gravy just ok - nothing super standout, and I'd be okay skipping them next time. The real star of the show was the tartar sauce - a perfect balance for the crispy fish. Tip - if you don't think you can finish two servings of fries (we came hungry and couldn't finish both), I'd recommend ordering two orders of only the fish, a single order of fries, and then just the tartar sauce on the side. I was so excited to eat here but ended up so disappointed. We made reservations as this place has practically no seating or availability from what I gathered in the reviews. We were a party of two and we ended up shoved in a corner in the back half of the restaurant, which happened to have no working A/C. The back of the restaurant was unbearably hot and, combined with the fried fish smell, it was terrible. We actually saw a family leave moments after being seated in the back near us because it was that hot. On top of that, the service was amongst the worst I've ever had to deal with. We were ignored the whole time and we couldn't get out of there sooner. They didn't give us utensils or the water we requested, so we had to wait (and hope) one of the staff members would pop their head into the back so that we could ask for the utensils (while our food was getting cold) and water. Later, I asked for the check and had to wait 20 minutes before we were helped with paying, despite numerous staff members seeing our empty plates and having asked for the check already. None of the employees seemed like they were in a good mood. The only reason I'm not giving them one star was because the fish was actually decent. I absolutely love that you have a variety of sauces/side options; they were all very tasty and I ended up liking mushy peas more than I expected! This Fish and Chips restaurant indeed serves some of the best or better fish in London. Having consumed a fair share of protein and carbs in various locales, I can confidently say they have amazing fried fish here. Fish - The fried Cod here tasted clean, fresh, and cooked to order. Breading wasn't overbearing nor heavy. It was just right and stuck to the fish well without completely separating in one go as you consume the fish. Cod was flaky and delicious. Bar none some of the best fish around. The classic comes with a trio of sauces. I opted for the classic tartar, curry, and mushy peas. The tartar sauce was tangy and delicious and delivered all the expected goodness you would from the sauce. The curry was delicious, mild, and a bit sweet and went very well with the chips. Mushy peas aren't something I'm a complete connoisseur of, but was good, albeit a bit bland for my tastes. The mushy peas indeed tasted like peas. Fish and sauces are a 5/5. Chips - Giving the chips its own review. Chips, were mostly, if not almost completely unseasoned. They offer salt and pepper at the table as well as the malt vinegar so you may season on your own to your liking. Unfortunately, the chips themselves almost seemed like they have been sitting under a warmer for far too long and were at best lukewarm. Some chips almost seemed overcooked and the ones you'd expect to be a bit more full bodied were a bit dry. Definitely had better at many other establishments. Might've just been a one off or miss on the batch, but the one served failed to match the quality of the fish. 2/5 on the chips. The unfortunate drawback to the experience dining in was the service. Our group was fortunate to get seated in roughly 30 minutes in queue. However, we were offered a split table near each other, which wasn't a concern. We were advised that we'd only have 45 minutes to dine-in, which we were fine with since we knew exactly what we were ordering. However, when we tried to order when seated they wouldn't take our order for our group, but only for half. Half our group was left sitting for nearly 30 minutes before our order was taken or any attention given to us. By the time our food arrived, half our group was finished leaving the other half to expeditiously consume our food as soon as it arrived. Someone dropped the ball and we couldn't fathom why the server outright refused to accept the entire group's order despite all orders being paid for and accommodated for on one receipt.
