Got the Mayfair Classic with haddock, chips, mushy peas, curry sauce, and English breakfast tea. Solid fish and chips -- proper crispy batter, decent chips -- but didn't deliver the hype, especially at £27 for the classic alone. More of a Mayfair location premium than a destination meal. Service was fine, kitchen clearly busy. Worth a try if you're already in the area; wouldn't trek across London for it. 3 stars out of 5.
I'd give Mayfair Chippy about 3.5 stars. It's a solid fish and chips place, but it didn't really stand out to me or feel worth the hype. The fish and chips were good overall. The fish was fried nicely with a buttery flavor, and the tartar sauce really stood out. It was very flavorful and tasted house-made. The fries were a bit soggy for my taste, though if you like thick, softer fries, you might enjoy them. The prawn toast had good flavor, but the batter was a bit too thick. The Pie Minister dish was not for me. The mashed peas needed more seasoning, and the meat in the pie lacked flavor and had a mushy texture throughout. I also wish the pie crust had been flakier. The shop is quite small, so it can feel a little tight inside. The waiter was nice, and most of the food came out fairly quickly, although the pie did take longer. Overall, it's a dependable spot for fish and chips, but I wouldn't wait in a long line for it.
I've had fish and chips in London three times before this and have always been disappointed in the past. I'm glad I didn't give up on it though, because I now get the hype. I would definitely recommend making a reservation if you can. We didn't, but we were pretty lucky to come right as a table was clearing up. Literally 10 min later, there was a whole queue waiting to get in. We got the Mayfair classic. I love that the portions are pretty big, we were able to share between two people and we still had some chips left over. The fish was super moist and practically fell apart. But the outside was still super crispy without feeling too oily. The curry and tartar sauce were delicious. And the salt and vinegar was really good on the crispy chips (which also didn't feel too oily and gross). I don't think I'll ever really understand mushy peas as a concept. But it was also pretty good. The waiter was super friendly and cracked a lot of jokes. I could tell he was very used to dealing with tourists though, I think I heard him warn like three tables (us included) about keeping our phones out on the table because it's common for strangers to just snatch it up when they walk by. I also love the little bag of candy they bring out along with the bill!
Long overdue review, but went on a week-long trip to London in the fall and the Mayfair Chippy was by far one of the most memorable meals we had! Came here as a group of 4 for dinner on a weeknight with no reservation, but only waited around 25 minutes in line then got seated indoors. This was conveniently located near the tube stop and Oxford Street - great meal after a day of shopping/sight-seeing. Our server, Isaac, was awesome - super friendly and made our experience more enjoyable! We ordered the classic fish and chips with both cod and haddock, and also thought both the sauces (gravy and curry) paired nicely with the meal. Both the fish were perfectly cooked and flaky, although the haddock had a slightly sweeter flavor that stood out in a good way. The chips were great as well, not overly salty. We ended our meal with the Sticky Date Pudding and it was SO delicious, I think about this dessert all the time!!! Such a great experience and if you're visiting London, definitely try the Mayfair Chippy! Worth the hype!
The fish and chips (cod) was 10/10 the best I've ever had!! Service was great, super nice & accommodating. Ambiance was okay, this location is small and it was a bit hot because of that. Overall though this didn't bother us. Reasonably priced too. I will come back next time I'm in London!
Not me getting secondhand embarrassment while a lady sitting at the next table over also with an American accent yells at the server "WHaT's tHe Wi-Fi pAsSwORD?!?!" D; I don't associate with her!! Lol. Major props to the very polite and patient staff dealing with rather obnoxious tourists (quite a bunch of tourists dining here actually). Delicately flaky and super tender fried cod here!! Batter held a little too much oil for my liking though, but not a dealbreaker. Pretty standard chips but huge portion (this fish & chips Mayfair classic entree is definitely sharable between two hungry people). Also tried the baked sourdough bread. Scrumptiously crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! Didn't really notice any tang though. Overall the overly-touristy vibe was kinda a buzzkill, but if you happen to be in the area and are craving for fish & chips (and don't mind the crowding; very packed inside) then I still recommend checking this spot out!
i got rained on while eating here and honestly with an umbrella on hand, couldn't complain. the fish and chips were good and that tartar sauce is gorgeous. my server was so kind and accommodating. the view of the buildings and the people watching opportunities made a solo fish and chips trip relaxing and enjoyable. but was a bit overpriced overall. my total came out to be nearly 50 US dollars for a slab of fried fish, chips, and small sides of tartar sauce, curry, and mushy peas. you could probably find something just as good for much cheaper if you scoured london a bit more. a side note, as i traveled london, i heard the most saturated amount of american accents at this restaurant. maybe it was coincidence. but do with that what you will.
The number one food I was looking forward to trying in England was fish and chips! After perusing the internet, many had recommended The Mayfair Chippy! I made reservations for our group and we had an enjoyable meal. Reservations are highly encouraged because this place is packed with people and has lines of those waiting to dine. We arrived a few minutes past our reservation, and they called me, but we were still well cared for. The service was quite accommodating as we requested to be at a different table. The wait staff checked on us and took great care. The restaurant is somewhat big, with tables for two and a few larger tables spread both inside and outside. It's loud, bustling, and busy. I had to have the Fried Haddock, Chips, Mushy Peas, and Chip Shop Curry Sauce. First off the portions here are massive! It was a giant piece of fish and loads of fries. Honestly, I think I ate three chips (fries) because I was so focused and full from the fish. The fish was perfectly fried, golden crisp, and the fish was so moist and delectable. I loved their tartar sauce but still getting acquainted with curry sauce! The mushy peas were fun to try but a one-and-done for me. My group also shared the Eton Mess for dessert which was airy, creamy, and sweet. The reviews are right, The Mayfair Chippy is an excellent choice for fish and chips. Even residents in London have spoken highly of the place! Just be sure to make reservations. You can find them in Mayfair off North Audley Street.
If you're in London and craving fish and chips that actually live up to the hype, this is your spot. I went for the Mayfair Classic cod fish n chips w/ curry sauce (not spicy, more like japanese curry) and--no exaggeration--this was probably one of the best fish n chips I've ever had. Crispy batter, flaky cod, perfect chips. Just exceptional. The place itself is small, but it buzzes with energy and character. You feel it the moment you walk in. The staff were friendly and personable-- welcoming without being over the top. Also tried the beef and oyster pie. Flavour was solid, but I wish it had come out hotter. Still worth a try if you're not in a rush. Pro tip: If you're hungry and want to eat fast, go straight for the fish n chips. They nailed it! Would 100% go back. Might even make it a regular stop when I'm in the area.
My friend and I were in London this past week and we had been wanting to try a good fish and chips spot. This restaurant popped up for her while searching on Yelp. As most restaurants in London, it is small and very busy. My friend got the traditional fish and chips and I got the fish sandwich which also came with chips. The food was excellent! Everything was hot and tasted fresh. Portion size is quite large as well. Service was prompt and friendly. I highly recommend making reservations because it gets very busy and your table time is limited to an hour. Definitely a spot I'd come back to whenever I find myself back in London.
Best fish and chips place in Mayfair. So good we went twice during our trip to London. We didn't have reservations so had to wait about 40 minutes for a table for 5. Book reservations if you can! It is a touristy spot and locals like it too. Saw lots of takeout orders also. You can wonder around the food hall next door while waiting. Food was amazing. Fish was crisp on outside and juicy on inside. They had sides that were very kid-friendly. Glad we found this place!
Had great reviews and had to drop by while in covent garden. It was packed on a Tuesday evening but the host did a great job of seating us. Had the fried mushrooms as an appetizer and cod and chips for main course. The fried mushrooms were large and had a great fry which you would expect from a premier fish and chip spot. It came with a truffle dipping sauce. It was a tasty appetizer. The cod and chips were a very good dish. The fry again was perfect and they got us our food straight from the fryer, it was piping hot. Great cook and the fish was nice and moist. Only feedback was that is could have used a little more salt. The chips were good but they could have been a tad more crisp. In all excellent meal and even better service.
I really wish wanted to like this place. I was debating whether to give 2 or 3 stars but this is based off MY experience, as I know others had a better experience. We didn't wait long in line and we got sat for a table of two after maybe 20 minutes. We got sat and was told we they had a strict time limit. We put in our order almost right away, which was cod that had fries and all the sauces, and then a haddock just the fish. A table sat next to us after maybe 10 minutes later, and they also ordered. After a bit, they got their food which was more food than what we ordered. Someone came around and said our food was coming. After about 20-30 minutes (it was difficult to waive down staff as we were sat in the back) we finally were able to get someone's attention. They came and asked if we were all set, only for us to tell them we haven't even gotten our food. They went back and told our original server and he came out and double checked what we ordered. At this point, the party next to us already finished their food. Once we finally got our food, which at this point is after 45 minutes, the food wasn't even hot and it was like it was sitting out the entire time. At this point we didn't want to complain or say anything since we were so hungry and just wanted to leave since the place was also small and cramped as well. The food was alright for being what it was but it was very bland. Again, this is just my experience since I know others had a better experience, it's just sad that they were so strict with the seating but can't be bothered to even check that we gotten our food yet. read more
Yum! Stumbled upon this place as we were headed somewhere else last night. There was a line of ~20 people waiting to get in. Looked it up online to see what people were waiting for and lucked into a last minute reservation. My husband and I each got a classic Mayfair and wow! So delicious. The curry sauce went so well with the fries, and the breading on the fish was incredible. Service was decent, though don't expect much. They are mega busy. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting who wants to try a chippy restaurant! read more

Of course we had to go to Mayfair Chippys. In UK, you have to try fish and chips and when you search for the top places for fish and chips Mayfair Chippys pops up as the top spot along with Poppy's. Poppy's seems more casual and given Mayfair is close to Oxford street we decided to give it a try. We showed up at 2:30 on a Wednesday and had to wait in line for about 20 mins. Got a table for 3 inside right by the door. Had to defect a star as the bathroom wasn't clean and it was full of flies. There was a ton of liquid on the ground that grossed us out. We ordered a full combo fish and chips that comes with mushy peas, curry sauce and tartar sauce. It's 25 pounds. Ordered a fired fish with a side order of chips that comes to about 20 pounds and a separate fish as the fries were plenty for all three of us. Unless you really want the curry sauce of mushy peas, I would not order the combo and just stick to fish with a side order of chips. The fish is nice and large and the chips are plenty. It was really tasty and well prepared. You get 1 hour time limit to consume your food before they ask you to leave. read more

Come for the fish and chips. Finish the meal off with the sticky toffee pudding. That's all you need and you will leave happy. I still don't understand mushy peas and curry sauce. All the fish needs is vinegar, maybe some lemon, and tar tar sauce. The sticker tough pudding is light, airy, sweet, and served warm with vanilla ice cream. Great way to finish the meal off read more

Amazing Fish and Chips. My wife and I ordered Cod and Haddock respectively and it was fresh and everything was crispy. The Chip wasn't as crispy as I would have liked it but the amount was plentiful. We enjoyed the Crispy Oyster mushrooms especially the black garlic & truffle mayo it came with, we even used it to eat majority of the chips with. Service is friendly even when it was really busy if it wasn't so cold we would have eaten outside instead of waiting 45 minutes for an inside seat highly recommend get a reservation on open table. We liked the decor but since it was so full we couldn't see all of it. read more
This place has such a cozy ambiance! I was able to get in after a brief 15 minute wait and it was well worth it. Loved the holiday music and decor, and they also had blankets for folks who were sitting outside. :) The fish and chips were solid! Got 2 orders of the fish & chips through takeout and avoided the long wait. The curry dip was amazing, but didn't really care for the mashed peas. The breading on the fish was very crisp and the fish was flavorful. In hindsight, I should have ordered a single order of chips as there was plenty to share. read more

I saw this place on a YouTube video prior to my visit to London. It was highly recommended and so of course I wanted to try it. The location is very small but very cozy. Our server was very kind and explained the menu to us so that we could decide which fish to have with chips. I thought that the food was just "ok" and not 10/10 as per the YouTuber's description. The food lacked flavor even with the sauces that were provided. read more
I had the classic fish n' chips here with haddock. The fish was fresh and the batter was light. It was very comforting biting into crispy goodness and hear that crunch each time! Both the tartar sauce and the curry sauce (must be a London thing) were great dips for the fish, however, the mushy peas...not so much. I have had green pea dips that were seasoned or flavored much better; they make you actually want to dip fried fish into green peas. Here, the mushy peas only reminded me of bad school cafeteria food unfortunately (1 star off). The chips were crunchy though. Even after about half an hour, they maintained their crunchiness. Here's a confession: I dip my chips into tartar sauce and curry sauce. Don't judge until you've tried it. ;) read more

Loved the local feel. We visited London and the concierge at our hotel recommended the restaurant. Nice vibe. We each had the fish and chips. Really good. We thought the mashed peas were tasty and we loved the idea of them being included. The fries a bit overdone so they were dry but the service was so excellent and their wine by the glass nicely priced, made it a wonderful casual dinner experience. We would probably go back if we were staying at the same hotel. read more

Do not come here. We waited outside for 2 hours from 8-10 pm while we watched reservation after reservation come through. They hold tables waiting for reservations that haven't shown up yet. By the time we were seated it was 10:10, they sat us at bar stools and then finally moved us to a table since we had a party of 3. Their take away is 6£ cheaper than the in-house price. They charge $6 for coke and the fish and chips were $31. The food wasn't bad but not worth the wait or the price. The sauces that come with the fish and chips are curry, mashed peas, and tartar sauce. There is some serious mismanagement occurring here and the prices are the epitome of tourist trap. Find fish and chips elsewhere. read more

This is the best fish and chips on Earth! I would fly to London just to eat here. I have Celiacs. They have a dedicated fryer. They are so attentive and careful! I enjoyed fried cod, tarter sauce, chips (fries) and mushy peas and their amazing slaw. Oh! Don't miss the fried squid starter. Don't be concerned about the long line, they are very efficient. I am sad that it will be a while before I can go back to the Mayfair Chippy to get some of the best fish and chips I have ever had. Before we went to London, I did some research on the best place to go and landed here. I recommend getting a reservation ahead of time, otherwise you might have to wait in line for an hour or so. My born-and-raised-in-the-UK British uncle, who had quite a few complaints before we even sat down - why did we need a reservation + this place is a far cry from a traditional Chip shop + back in my day, etc, etc, etc - finished his meal quite pleased and satisfied. The hostess was the most pleasant person, even with many customers badgering her with questions and complaints. She answered everyone with so much politeness and with a beautiful smile. The place itself is small but with lots of charm. The servers were charming as well and very efficient. They do want to seat as many customers as fast as they can, but they're not going to push you out the door if you go over the "time limit." Uncle and I opted for the Fish and Chip combo which includes mushy peas, tartar sauce and either HP or curry sauce. Mom and Aunt shared the mussels. Appetizers included the fried prawns and squid. All the fried foods were perfect and not overly greasy. Seasoning were on the milder side so that the sauces can shine. Price was definitely on the higher side, but for that experience and fantastic meal, I would gladly fork over my wallet. read more

My brother and his family were here earlier in the year when visiting so we made it a point to get here. After a long day, we walked here and the queue was 15 deep! Luckily we had a reservation and got inside (warm because of the fryers, I suppose. I got a pear cider with a glass of ice so I could get something cool to drink. Brother got Sauvignon Blanc and nephew had a couple Sprites. We started with the fresh baked sourdough and it came with butter and some kind of sauce that was a perfect complement to the bread- salty, creamy. My brother and I got the Mayfair Chippy Special, he with Haddock and I got cod. Chips came with curry sauce for dipping and tartar for the fish. Mushy peas was also provided. Nephew got kids fish sticks and he destroyed them. I apologize if I misspell names here. Beatrice was our server and was absolutely slammed all night. Still was amazing we never needed anything and they didn't push us to eat quickly like other places in the US when it's busy. When the food is freshly fried, it takes a while. At the end, I also interacted with Ambra who was also helpful. Being so tired from the entire day's walking and events I made the cardinal sin of thinking she was our server. But she was also quite helpful and without making me feel like an idiot she mentioned she wasn't really the server. Both were excellent and I was happy to pay for this meal. Couldn't even come close to finishing my dinner so this could be the last meal I eat in London tonight after the NFL game. Suggestion: make a reservation. Not a good idea to show up without one, it's a long wait. Thanks Mayfair Chippy! My brother mentioned he recognized the manager John who was also working crazy hard. Food (4) - Cod was better than haddock. My uncle was even able to have gluten-free cod and chips. The mushy peas were underwhelming. But the curry chip sauce was awesome. Service (5) - fast and friendly Ambiance (3) - its very, very small. So we were seated outside where it was a little too cool and windy to thoroughly enjoy being gawked at by people in the queue read more
We heard that this was one of the best fish and chips spots in town, so we had to give it a try. We came right when it opened at 11am and were seated right away. The service was good overall. Ambiance was a bit upscale but still seemed casual enough. - Mayfair classic (5/5): We got the cod, and it was breaded perfectly. Super crispy and delicious. I LOVE all the sauces it came with. The tartar sauce was great, and the curry sauce was super savory and the perfect addition. The chips were pretty thick but still crispy. Mushy peas also yummy! - Sheppard's pie (4.5/5): Very savory, big portion. The meat and veggies complemented each other very well. Buttered greens were delicious; cooked well and not mushy. read more

Delicious Fish and Chips! While some may say it is on the pricey side, we went in aware of it. We were visiting London for a week and planned to go to the Mayfair Chippy, based on recommendations that it is one of the best in the area. Be prepared to. Wait in a queue outside (unless you made reservations). Inside the restaurant were a tables (i think more in the back), a counter sitting area by the front window and outdoor sitting. We had a very friendly server. We tried 2 of their Mayfair Classic: haddock and cod. Each came with 3 dipping sauces (tartar, mushy peas and curry)and generous amount of chips. My favorite was definitely the curry sauce! The fish was quite large, crispy on the outside and juicy inside. Needless to say, we finished it off and went home very happy with our meal. read more

Very popular spot in London for fish and chips! We had to wait for 30 min to be seated because it was so busy. Once we got seated the waitress was so quick and you can taste that the food was freshly made. We got their two most popular items on the menu: Mayfair classic and the mussels. Both were sooo goooddd!!! read more

The best fish and chips in all of London! Small location - so plan on waiting in a line outside.....but it's worth it! Tables turn over quickly. The tartar sauce was delicious! The muscles with the wine sauce were also incredible read more
The best fish and chips! The fried cod was the best I've ever had and their tartar sauce was perfect to dip the fish in. The batter on the fried cod was light and crispy while the cod itself was perfectly cooked. They gave a lot of fries, which also were so good when dipped in the tartar sauce. After, we shared the sticky date pudding with clotted cream ice cream and it was the best pudding I've had so far! The cake was warm and moist which paired nicely with the sauce and ice cream. We went early so we were seated immediately. It's a bit small inside and we did see a long line when we left. It's worth it though! Service was friendly and quick, they checked on us a lot but didn't rush us at all even though they were so busy. I'll be back the next time I am in London! read more

If you have the pleasure of visiting this restaurant make sure to make a reservation especially during the lunch rush. I made a reservation for 11:30am when they open, and by 12 noon the restaurant was full with a queue. It gets busy quick and it seems the staff was stretched pretty thin, but they were very kind and provided fast service. Visiting London, although I do no eat seafood, I had to try fish and chips. They opened on time and I was seated right away. I ordered the haddock Mayfair Classic and it was served less than 7 minutes later. I wasn't a fan of the accompanied sauces, but the fish and chips were outstanding. The fish was fried perfectly crispy yet it was still juicy and tender inside. I will need the recipe for the batter alone. The chips were also crispy, but weren't too salty. Everything was seasoned perfectly. The restaurant itself reminded me of a modern yet traditional kitchen with the checkered floors. It was very welcoming with the cozy booths and high counters with views of pedestrians walking the streets. It created the impression of restaurant-style elevated home cooking. read more

I do not perceive tourists to be a red flag, when I am one myself! Some things are popular for a reason, and mostly it may also be the location and convenience. Sometimes you really don't have time to go off the beaten path just to have fish and chips. Mayfair takes reservations, although they are hard to get. It is tiny inside. On a shine day, there is a tiny patio. Between haddock and cod, you will be told that haddock is more fishy. Because we have mkre cod in the US, we picked haddock and did not regret. Good tartar, good chips. Also enjoyed the jumbo shrimp. Our server was funny, which is always a bonus. read more
