That bahn mi sandwich was one of the best things I've put in my mouth for years. Holy delicious, unctuous, balanced bites of joy. I haven't found good bahn mi in Monterey, but will be a regular consumer here from now on. Also bought one of the cold Italian sandwiches but was feeling so satiated and grateful after my lunch, that I gave it to a homeless man, whom I'm sure will love it. Bought some beautiful toasted Israeli couscous, some marrow bones to roast and some other pantry staples. Also, they have the A5 wagyu steaks for $160/lb. What a find. Treat yourself! read more

Found this on Yelp looking for a Tri-tip sandwich. No Tri- tip so I ordered a Build Your Own roast beef sandwich, then while wandering the store I spied what I thought might be some Tri Tip in the deli case? Asked about it, and Yep it was Tri-Tip and Yes I could change my order. All this to say that the Meatery was very friendly and accommodating, and the sandwich was tender and tasty. Somewhat pricey meats but to be fair they are mostly locally grown and grass fed beef as well as local pork products. The lamb is from Colorado and the corned beef is not local either. This is a new place (open 1.5 months) so worth checking out particularly if you prefer to BBQ organic local meats. Also beer and wine available. I'm addicted to the porchetta roast--recently brought my daughter and brother in to try it and they were stunned by the deliciousness. Just really good food. While we we there, we picked up 5 pieces of veal osso bucco to make for a rainy New Year's dinner. Magnificent! I also love the bone broth and my doggie loves the homemade bones. While we were there, we had to pick up prosciutto potato chips, some gremolata, and some pickled veggies. Just yum. I really wanted to love the fried chicken!! It was very underwhelming... Spent just shy of $74 on 10 pieces of chicken and 4 sides. I had to call and warn them that the breading on the thighs was not cooked all the way through. It was just blah and VERY thick. Not crispy and the coating fell apart and left the slimy skin hanging. The mac salad was another issue. I'm all for al dente pasta but this was about two minutes prior to al dente on the pasta. Mac and cheese was super dry, probably made several days ago? Idk but the winner was the amazing Vermont cheddar mashed potatoes. I could eat those velvety and delicious whipped potatoes any day of the week. Bottom line, I'll stick to ordering my Turkeys and things like that. The specials, like the fried chicken, hard pass for me. I truly hope mine was the first batch and all the rest turned out amazing. read more

Love this place! First off, best sandos in Monterey area! The Bahn mi is excellent. Of course their Italian Po Boy is also incredible with all of their diverse and delicious cured meats. The only downside is having to pick only one. I love going here when they're slow and getting tons of amazing cured meats for a cheeseboard. Also they have locally grown and butchered meat that is of the highest quality. Last time I was in there they had a 4H pig they were butchering. I tend to avoid grocery store pork and beef given the conditions the animals are raised in these days, so its great to have a humane option for these tasty meats! Honestly one of my favorite food stops of all time. read more

I've been here twice already and their sandwiches are delicious. Due to the partial shutdown of many restaurants from the "shelter in place order", I had to call in to make a To-Go order. They're very accommodating and attentive to details so that the sandwich is made exactly how I want it. The first time here, I ordered the muffalata sandwich but said that item is no longer on the menu. However, he tried accommodating by recommending another sandwich that was very similar to it. The second time I was here, I ordered the brisket sandwich and man... It was good! The brisket was very juicy and tender as it melts in your mouth every bite. I asked for additional bbq sauce on the side to top it off. Last but not least, their chili beans are amazing as well! I would definitely come back again. read more

After a 40 minute drive and trying to beat the clock so I didnt miss the sandwich of the day I arrived at The Meatery only to walk in and be told that they werent making sandwhiches today. Go figure. What kind of deli doesnt have sandwiches, I hope the car dealerships have cars. The place looked clean enough I will give them that. But what a serious dissapointment and waste of my time and gas. This place is a hidden gem in the heart of Seaside. Walked in and the owner Todd reccomended his Fried Chicken that he had just set out from the fryer. I also had to try his Vietnamese banh mi sandwich. The banh mi was rich and full of flavor with pork belly, cilantro, and pickled carrots and radish on french baguette. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. Washed it all down with a pilsner and called it a day. Will definitely return and I highly recommend checking this spot out if your in the area. read more

When we moved down here the Meatery was failing under its prior owner and we were devastated because we so wished to have a good local butcher in our area. We understood why it wasn't going well based on a first visit there. It closed and we were bummed. We were delighted to hear it was reopening under Todd and Ada its now owners. The meats are amazing. Sandwiches great. Salads yum. Whether you drop in for a light bite or buy meats out of the display it is all great. I am not sure what the gentleman who experienced the sausage is referring too - we order the sausage with lemon, feta, spinach all the time and it is a favorite of ours for easy weekday meals with lemon rice and spinach. Delicious. We love love love their steaks, have amazing short rib periodically. Love the lamb rack chops from Colorado. They are SUBLIME. We have only had one bad experience and their meat - a pork roast that turned out chewy and tough but also wonder if we overcooked it. . The pork shoulder we've gotten since then has been remarkable. We have ordered brisket and salad for a quick lunch when we drop in and wait for things to be cut. Todd and Ada and their team are warm, welcoming and have amazing meats on offer. Even our dog loves the dog food they are now making. Win-win and hands down the best butcher on offer in the Monterey County area. Went there to see what kind of beef they would have and ended up staying for a sandwich. Had the Italian cold cut. The bread is good and there is a touch of sweetness to the spread that is a nice touch. The meats were all good with nothing that was over powering. A smoked brisket sandwich was also ordered and the meat had a good flavor to it. I bought a filet mignon and a New York strip. I was worried about the strip steak because when I got it home I noticed some silver skin on it and a big strip of fat in it. The steak cooked up nicely and the two people that ate it had no tough spots and one said it was a very good steak. The filet was cut in half before it was cooked and it cut so easily the meat was so soft and juicy after cooking. The people there are friendly and helpful. Over all the steaks were very good, definitely better then the grocery store. The sandwiches were good also. The only thing is, be ready to pay for anything you get here. The steaks were over $30 a pound. The 4 stars is because of the sticker shock but the need to find a way to buy more steaks. read more

We ordered several things from Chef Todd for our Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone loved whatever we bought from the Meatery. It made our dinner so much easier to have a few things prepared. Chef Todd even made us some deviled eggs even though they weren't on his menu. We ordered the rolls and they were prepared for us so they were ready to bake. Service was great, owner and his staff are top notch, I felt like they cared about service, which is definitely part of the experience. The place is nice, clean, layout was cool, options are plenty as well. But, I went there for the "Best Pastrami on the Peninsula", and so that's really what I graded on. I've had Togo's #9, Beachhut Hightide, corned beef at Harry's Hofbrau, reubens at various places over years, I've even smoked and made my own. This one did NOT hit the mark at all. Alone the pastrami meat was ok but dry. In this variation of Pastrami Reuben it's mixed with a strange sauce, nearly raw slices of brussels sprouts, a very salty double layer of unmelted cheese, and honestly it just doesn't work. I like the crunch of the brussel sprouts but it still doesn't belong. The bread gets too soggy with the sauce, the cheese didn't melt, and there was no sauerkraut, making for a sharp but forgettable sandwich. The amount of Pastrami was disappointing as well, most Reubens are loaded, this one was less than 1/2" thick. I like trying new variations and therefore gave it 3 stars for effort, but it by no means is a top contender. Again, the place and people are great, my review is really just about the Pastrami Reuben. read more

Today, my second time, i ordered a sandwich and the preparer of my sandwich seemed to have got into an argument with someone from the kitchen. So i received my sandwich like this, are you kidding me? You sell sandwiches but don't know how to wrap one? At first i didn't want a bag because I was heading to work but when i got my sandwich unfolded and no tape to keep it closed i obviously asked for a bag. 2 stars for the sandwich. I was so happy to find this butchers shop after we moved to Seaside! It's a little pricey, but that's no surprise with the bougie vibe they've got. I've been having trouble finding my favorite Duck Mousse and Duck Rillette around here, and they've got both! Their sandwiches are amazing too- I've gotten the Bahn Mi twice, and, while it's significantly more than you'd pay for a Bahn Mi at an actual Vietnamese place, its flavor is well worth the cost in my opinion. As a native of the Chicago area, I've always asked to sample a small slice of lunchmeat prior to purchase. As soon as I asked, do you provide samples? High-end butcher shop with gourmet sandwiches, to be sure, but just way too expensive, especially for Seaside. I was impressed with the quality of their California-raised lamb and beef, but again, the prices are just astronomically high, to the point of being abusive. I ate the over-priced brisket sandwich on site and liked it. Their method of serving and pricing the side dishes is dishonest. You think you're ordering a normally-sized side, and then they serve you a huge (pound+) container and charge an exorbitant price per pound for it, without asking you how much you want first. This place has so much potential. How about hanging on to some of the quality, but also getting some reasonably-priced products for those of us who have to work for a living? Oh well...they'll probably stay in biz even with the high prices because there are so many wealthy people coming from Carmel, PG, etc. I look forward to stopping by and trying another one of their sandwiches (without a side of course); but buying meat here is probably going to be a once-a-year thing, like for Christmas. read more

I've been in twice. The first time we purchased a sampling of pork chops, pate, and various sausages. Took them home, cooked them up, and ate every bit. Delicious...though very $$! Second time in I got the roast beef and cheddar sandwich. Not so much a fan. While I know intellectually that the meat is superior, it didn't taste like anything great...in fact, there was so much horseradish, onion, and cherry peppers, quite frankly I have no idea what the meat tasted like. Ditto for the cheese: I saw it in the sandwich but never actually tasted it. Nothing fresh like a tomato or lettuce. Bread was good but didn't like the bread to filling ratio (heavy on the bread side). The part that really sucked was the price: over $14 with tax for a very disappointing sandwich. I'll try again with maybe the Reuben or Banh mi since everyone is raving about the two but I'm not getting my hopes up. The decor and ambiance is wonderful...but for the price, I'd rather just purchase something at the grocery store and make my own at home. read more

Went into the store at 6:00pm for some steaks to grill. Got a couple of filet mignons and a couple of NY strips. Service was fast, friendly and efficient. The meats were premium priced, (4 steaks = $70) but totally worth it. They cooked up super tender. Much better quality than the supermarkets. read more

Came for the chicken meal Friday. It was ok, overpriced for 1/2 chicken with sides for $52 not really a meal for 2. Chicken was a little dry and not seasoned at all, not like chef ballesteri's buttermilk chicken which is what I thought we were getting. Also they forgot the corn rounds in our order. Slaw salad and pickled veggies were really good and biscuits were awesome. Mac and cheese also good. Disappointed with the main dish fried chicken. My husband wanted a bahn mi for lunch. I suggested trying The Meatery because I had heard about their bahn mi. I was very excited to try it until I took the first bite and had to spit it right back out. The "pork belly" is straight FAT, mushy slimy blobs of fat. We both took all the Fat out, gave it to the dog, and took a few more bites of bread smothered in mayo with a few carrots and a couple jalapeños before just throwing the whole thing away. What a disappointing and complete waste of $30. Next time we will stick to the good old $4 bahn Mi from the Vietnamese place. read more

Reuben sandwich is pretty good, the brussel sprout sauerkraut adds a nice crunch. The Italian sub is classic and great as well. Wasn't a fan of their fried chicken. Mac n cheese has a bit of heat. I ordered the Wagyu Experience over the phone and expressed concern over how to properly cook the meal. Isaac was insanely helpful. I went and picked up the meat the following day and he walked me thru the Facebook page tutorials and was super patient and helpful with all my questions. The meat was incredible. I also picked up truffle butter and risotto which everyone loved. I can't complement Isaac or The Meatery enough. Every time I go there are tasty new selections and the quality and customer service is awesome. read more

A quick lunch with a friend. They had the roast beef sandwich - a bit too much 'other stuff' in it (i.e. peppers, onions). I opted for the Reuben - fantastic! (A) sliced on the diagonal which always merits extra points (B) meat was lean and mean - yummy (C)so full of meat, I'm having the other half for supper. I was wishing for a side slice of Kosher dill pickle which would make the price less painful. In all fairness, this is a real butcher shop with sandwiches on the side.
