I love when this happens. With no agenda, we ended up in West Chester PA (vs Westchester NY.) A cute town with an inordinate number of restaurants, we peered into windows and read menus. "The Mediterranean Restaurant" sparked interest. Infusing Lebanese and Italian cuisines, they garnered great reviews. Also BYOB. After running to Carlinos for a bottle of red, we took our chances at Mediterranean without a reservation. (Do indeed make one if you come for dinner.) I chatted with the couple across from us. "This is the best restaurant in West Chester," the fellow said. They live here and have been to them all. We started with what's called a Maza Platter: customer's choice of four appetizers. I selected feta & olives, tabouli, hummus and baba ghanoush. Delish!! (Unlike my husband, I wasn't a fan of feta, but this feta was infinitely better than anything I've had before.) The spreads are made inhouse. The cheese isn't. T raved about the lamb kabob, which was likely grilled. I in turn recommend their falafel encrusted chicken. Chef isn't afraid to spice things up and everything was noticeably fresh. Even the sides were stand-out. The aforementioned couple recommended Mediteranean's apple pie for dessert, a seemingly odd choice. They said it's baked in the restaurant's adjoining bakery. Since they ran out of ice cream -- what's pie if it's not a la mode?! -- T and I shared baklava. Two thumbs up. Homemade, not saturated in syrup. I'd like to give a shoutout to Jason, our delightful and efficient server. He does the restaurant proud. Note that Mediterranean has been in West Chester for 29 years. (That's a virtual lifetime in the restaurant world!) Prices we thought reasonable, and portions generous. read more

Flavorless hummus. It tasted like ground, canned garbanzo beans with no salt, lemon or tahini. That store hummus is even better than this. The pitas are cold and tasted worse than what you can get at Giant. Sautéed mushrooms are flavorless and in a mushroom water. Meat pie tasted like unseasoned, old meat with tomatoes. The entrees weren't any better. Ran out of beef. Not sure how one does that on a day with like 3 tables. Tried the special soup, which we sent back. The bolognese was gross. Tasted sort of like Chef Boyardee, but worse. The had to argue with the "chef" to even take it off the tab. She suggested we'd be better off eating at home. We agree. McDonald's would have been a step up. It seems like they just don't have any spices or salt in that kitchen. Plus the servers would just disappear for ages. It appeared that this was our server's first job in food service. Service was rather slow. And hour in, no entrées. It's in an hold house, which was cute. Most tables are upstairs. If you want Mediterranean food, you'd be better off cooking something from the Betty Crocker cookbook. read more

Dinner last night with friends. Inside is cozy, we sat upstairs - it got loud - but it was nice. Service was great, server was very knowledgeable about all the menu items. Tons of specials probably 5-6. We go the maza player to share - yum. Falafel was really really good. Lamb kabobs great. My husband got the salmon special was huge. Amazing hidden gem in West Chester! Cozy spot with amazing food and great service. Our waitress, Jen, was very knowledgeable and friendly. We were interested in going here for the small shared plates meal. We got seated right away with a bread basket but the dip needed salt. Our server was great with lots of specials. We ordered the maza platter with 4 choices and here is the ranking of each- they all came on one plate. 1. Roasted red pepper toasts- great! 2. Tabouli- like bruschetta- needed more bread 3. My husband got this to go Sunday night. I love Mediterranean food and I was craving it. I was so excited to eat it when I got home. My husband started eating before me and told me that the food was not good and he wouldn't eat it. I thought he was just being dramatic until I started eating it. The food tasted off, and the textures of some of the food were off. We spent over 70 dollars on the food so I didn't want to throw it away. I ended up throwing about half away that night and then the next night I went back to see if I could eat it and it was not good so I ended up throwing away the rest. I was really disappointed with my experience. I don't know if the food would have been better if we had eaten at the restaurant but unfortunately, with our experience, we will not be returning. read more

Let me preface this review by saying I'm having a bad day. We have a teething infant at home and nobody is getting a lot of sleep. I'm sure some of you can recognize the level of tired I'm at right now. On one hand I'm going to be snippy because I'm tired but on the other hand you have to understand how annoyed I must be to write this review instead of getting some extra sleep. Another factor to consider is we have been pampered by one of the best lebanese restaurants I've ever been to (Cafe Baladi in Frazer). Full disclosure I have celiac so any review for things containing gluten come from my wife. We will not be returning to this restaurant. I'll give you a rundown of the food from best to worst. The scallop small plate was excellent but overpriced. In case you are wondering, the market price for TWO scallops is 18 bucks. The hummus was good. It's not winning any records but still pretty good. The falafel was also pretty good but the sauce was well I don't know what it actually was because all I tasted was Franks red hot. This was confirmed by my wife. I said 'tell me what you think of the falafel sauce' and she replied 'all I tasted is what I think is Franks red hot'. She is from Buffalo and eats lots of wings. Franks red hot is a common base to wing sauce. We both know what Franks tastes like. I know there slogan is 'I put that **** on everything' but I'm not sure this is what they had in mind. The bolognase was awful. It lacked flavor and the pasta was so overcooked it was practically mush. The ground beef in the kafta platter was not salted and there was an overwhelming taste of charred meat with what I think was clove. The rice in the Kafta platter was also mush. The pita was served in a plastic bag from which the restaurant got it. I know the boiling question on the tip of your tongue is 'ooohhh where do they get their pita?' They source their pita from soumaya & Sons bakery in Whitehall, pa. The restaurant advetises that bread is made in their bakery. Perhaps only levened bread is made there - I have no idea. Maybe it's a religious thing? The baklava was soggy. I dont know how else to describe it, soggy. I tried to take a picture but soggy doesn't seem to translate to a digital format. The gluten free cookies were pretty good though. read more

While I like my ahi tuna rare, I do not care for salmon this way. It came out rare and mushy. I Guess the old adage of not getting fish on Sunday nights is true. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here. I love a good falafel and their's was yummy and compact. I think I would have preferred a tzatziki sauce to a tahini. The pilaf was so rich and flavorful! The best I've had in a while. The chicken kebab that my friend got was incredibly juicy and delicious--we were impressed at how much flavor was packed into some chicken on a stick. The dolmas were delicious as well, not too salty while still packing the desired flavorful punch. We considered giving 5/5 stars; it was a very good meal but something about it wasn't the greatest? There weren't enough veggies for the hummus, but I bet they'd give more if we had asked. The experience was just so close to perfect, but it wasn't perfect. We have been here for 3 dinners now over the last year with 2 of them during Covid dining outside. The outdoor set up was great with the add of heaters. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable (and they have a lot to remember with the changing specials). The specials are creative and compliment the menu nicely. Tried this place for the first time today with my girlfriend and her mom, and instantly fell in love. The owner was super sweet and accommodating, and he made all of the food himself. We ordered two appetizers, grape leaves and the hummus, and were insanely impressed with how flavorful everything was. As a main dish, I got the chicken gyro, which had fresh ingredients, including the chicken that was grilled to perfection. The inside at first glance is small and homey, with only a mere 5 tables set up. However, there is an entire upstairs section that offers ample seating for any occasion. Where do I begin... After a gorgeous day at the Longwood Gardens my boyfriend and I wanted a fairly casual BYOB night out. After reviewing Faunbrook's catalog of local menus, we decided the Mediterranean would suit us well. Their menu seemed great and the reviews, fair enough to give it a try. We showed up 10 minutes early for our reservation time only to have confused the wait staff as to where we should be seated. Outside? Downstairs? Upstairs? Where?! So we finally say upstairs after requesting outside only to be told "yes we have a table... Oh wait no we don't..." We arrive upstairs to find the noisiest of noise levels. We have to yell to hear each other. After waiting 10 minutes with no glasses, no napkins and no silverware, we flagged down someone who seemed like a busboy to get us some glasses for our wine. He brought us 2 cheap plastic champagne glasses. Thanks... Then another 15 or so minutes go by with not even an acknowledgement from any staff member. Finally some young girl brings us pita bread and some gooey green dip which was a far cry from pesto if that's what it was supposed to be. We requested that we finally place our order and she said "sure let me go get your server." Another 5 minutes down and frustrated we finish our champagne glass of wine and the "busboy" comes over an says "so do you wanna hear the specials?" Surprise!! The guy who gave us crappy glasses, no water and no utensils was our server who couldn't care less about how long we waited. Without a second more we said we were just going to leave and he said "ok..." Took our pita bread and dip and walked away without an apology or anything. We walked 30 feet to the Olive Branch and had an impeccable meal with top notch service. Long story short... Don't waste your time. Stopped by for lunch today and had the Lamb gyro. All ingredients were super fresh and the lamb is local/grass fed. This is not your traditional gyro with sliced meat that tastes artificial. The meat is chopped and presented in a charred wrap with diced tomatoes, lettuce, diced onions and a home made tzatziki which perfectly coats the meat - it's not thick like traditional tzatziki. We stopped here on the way home from Delaware, in torrential rains, but the freshness of the food and the many healthy vegan choices made this small restaurant a true pleasure. We opted to go upstairs, which is more intimate. Our server handled our wine quickly and knew a lot about the food's ingredients and preparation. The Gay Street area has many other restaurants that looked good too. The falafel was some of the lightest and freshest I have tasted, and the rice lentil pilaf was served with a very tasty tart cabbage salad, which we have unsuccessfully tried to replicate at home. A parsnip soup was blended to a puree and was a delicious alternative to the usual lentil soups we cannot resist. Good low lighting, soft Mediterranean music, candles, and hand-painted walls added to the relaxing atmosphere. People will surely bash me for this, but I don't understand parents bringing toddlers to small, quiet adult restaurants like this. Yes, kids should be exposed to new things, but can a 3-year-old really appreciate a relaxed-paced falafel dinner? None I know can, and the banging and loud talking can really spoil the mood for other adults who are only feet away, sometimes inches. I guess I just have to start going to dinner much much later. One last curmudgeonly comment: Cute or not, kids should never be permitted to stand on chairs. Their shoes walk on the same slop on the street that mine do, and a fall could of course be very dangerous. Just another sign that dinner for the poor bored kid is taking too long and that a more child-oriented place is a better choice for now. Rant off. read more
