Greasy and high priced. It is really food from Denny's. It was cold by the time it arrived.

He smokes all of the meat with real apple and hickory wood and I loved the smoky sweetness. There hot sauce was flavorful but not burn your britches off and I wish I earned a commission working for him because he was the only spot I went back to twice and kinda lingered ...outside it's called loitering lol but it was SO good and Lamon was so gracious . We met with their crew as we are planning for rehearsal dinner in October and want to make sure the out of town guests good a great KC BBQ experience. While we've looked at some big dog BBQ spots in town, something about going with the uber-local, passionate group is more appealing. And while I love places like Joe's KC, there's something so manicured and average about their catering versus their individual meals. That's definitely not the case with Applewood, where it feels like meeting up with your friend who knows how to work a smoker. First thing I tried was the pulled pork with a touch of applewood BBQ sauce and spicy sauce. That flavor combo is made for me, and tasted incredible. I had to pace myself not to eat too much of that. The next thing up was the ribs and they were very meaty and perfectly smoked. I absolutely loved them. The crew brought out smoked chicken wings and my Mom and I both said, "Oh thanks, I'm sure they're good but this isn't likely what we'd have at the rehearsal." We each tried one and changed our minds completely. It was like a rib and a chicken wing made sweet love. The sides were good too, especially the "burnt end" BBQ beans. They have some spiciness that I like in beans. We tried a cilantro grilled corn, smoked tomatoes with cheese, and even some Indian rice. All in all, excited to roll with them once we get it all figured out and hope to be able to update this review in October to confirm that everything was as top-notch as it was when we tried it for the first time.

The Pitch Salad Week (fried chicken Salad off the menu special)…read moreThe Pitch Taco/Nacho Week (Korean barbeque tacos) As well as Burger Week and Sandwich Week showings. Clustertruck gets an A+ for convenience, especially if you find yourself in a pinch for lunch or an early dinner and are located near downtown or river market. This is a pick up and delivery only joint and it is a staple when it comes to The Pitch hosting special food weeks, which is fun. It's always enjoyable when local concepts come to play and Clustertruck is as local as you can get. RIP chef Matt but his legacy lives on through yummy decent priced food (excellent priced if you catch them running a half off special). Let's start off with the tacos, the dish I ate the most recently. These were divine and were dripping I'm flavors, the sticky sweet Korean barbeque pork wasn't chewy and provided the perfect Bute of succulent meat inside the white corn taco shells. The slaw was a perfect accent to the tacos with the right level of acidity and freshness. These tacos were top notch! Now, onto the salad which wasn't your basic bed of greens. The creamy homemade dressing was stellar with tangy notes of lemon and earthy Tahini. The crispy lightly breaded fried chicken strips made this salad a bona fide meal with the additions of salty parmesan and bacon it was a near perfect combination of flavors. The burger and the sandwich aren't as fresh in my memory but I remember one being a chicken parmesan and the burger being a barbeque bacon burger. Both weren't as unique as the other two when it came to flavor profiles but, they delivered comfort. And sometimes that's all food is supposed to do- not break boundaries but provide with a warm hug. Clustertruck is a solid choice, super fast and reliable sometimes, their prices are a little steep but, you're paying for convenience and you can usually find some stellar deals! This may be a Clustertruck but it's definitely not a Cluster...well you get the rest!

That being said, it felt like I was the first and only person to ever opt for "pick-up" -- so if you're feeling awkward, and like this is some back-alley transaction instead of a fast food pickup order, you're probably in the right spot. The food was good, but the process for obtaining it {walking around confused and eventually having a delivery driver that had been staring at me, inform me I should knock on the unmarked side door in the alley} was less than ideal.

From the moment you walk in, it feels like stepping into a neighborhood deli back in Northeast. The smell alone tells you you're in the right place. The sandwiches? Huge. No skimping, no shortcuts. The meats are sliced right, the bread actually has character (crispy where it should be, soft inside), and everything tastes fresh and intentional. I ordered an Italian steak, and let me tell you--this is the kind of food that makes you close your eyes on the first bite. Perfect balance of meats, cheese, oil, and seasoning. Nothing overpowering, nothing missing. Just right. The staff is warm and welcoming, like they actually care if you enjoy your food (which matters). It's the kind of place where you feel comfortable, not rushed, and definitely well-fed. Johnny C's isn't trying to be trendy or fancy--it's doing what matters: good, honest deli food done right. If you're craving something that feels authentic and satisfying, this place delivers. I'll be back. And if I'm coming back, trust me--that's saying something.
