I went with my kids for their birthday, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience from start to end. Service was great, the restaurant was clean, tables well spaced out, and food was delicious. It was also really easy to make a reservation online (I believe it's through Resy). I thought the service was incredible from start to finish. Our table was ready for us to sit right away, and while service was great, it was not overbearing. Our drinks were always full, and there was just enough attention where we could get something if needed. We enjoyed the food. The dishes felt "simple", but yet well executed. I wouldn't say this is the finest dining you've ever had, but all of our dishes were delicious, fresh, and well prepared. * Fish and chips with caesar salad: delicious light batter - the chips (fries) were delicious and very nicely fried; the garlic aioli was amazing. The caesar salad * Caesar salad: Nicely done, very good croutons, and I appreciate they were willing to put the dressing on the side to control the amount of dressing on the salad * Trout: It was a nice, light fry, and very tasty. It was not very salty, and the garlic aioli was a perfect complement to the fish. The green beans it came with were deliciously cooked with a nice crisp and almond slivers * Vegetarian chili soup: The chili soup was delicious. My kids don't like chili but really liked this * Fish pasta: The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, and the fish was so fresh. The pasta sauce was a nice compliment to the fish. It also came with some butter bread which was absolutely delicious and so nicely (heavily) buttered and toasted. It tasked like two very large crispy / soft croutons The neatest part were the movie posters in the hallway on the way to the bathroom. I was able to recognize all the movies (crazy how many Spielberg produced), and my kids recognized quite a few of them as well. A very nice café that we really enjoyed. It's clean and well-kept, and the staff are friendly and polite. The menu is interesting, with plenty of dishes to choose from. In addition to the soup, we tried mashed potatoes with salmon and truffle-and-cheese fries sprinkled with garlic -- everything was delicious. I especially enjoyed the soup. Unique and one of a kind! I've heard about this place due to its famous late owner, Leah Adler, famous restaurateur and once concert pianist, also, most of all, mother of Steven Spielberg. I finally came with a friend and we both enjoyed the food and the nice atmosphere! It is a small place, hidden on Pico Blvd, not too far from Fox Studio. The outside is busy street scenes but the inside has a calm, quiet, and neighborhood vibe. We ordered a salad and a salmon dish; both were good and the portion size was good. Now, before you leave, make sure you take a walk through their poster gallery -- Spielberg's masterpieces are all there! This is an LA classic. Never heard of it until last week, but I think any visitor to Los Angeles should make a stop here. Why? Because atmosphere is elegant and classy, but not stuffy, the food is exceptional, and it occupies an interesting cultural niche. The late owner of was Steven Spielberg's mom, which puts one foot squarely in the secular world, but the restaurant is also dairy kosher, which adds a very traditional element. For those who don't know, dairy kosher means the restaurant serves fish, dairy products, vegetables etc, but not meat. The waiters were very nice. The restaurant was owned by Steven Spielberg's mom, Leelee. Her memory lives on here through her delicious comfort food. I ordered the trout almandine from the regular menu and my dining companion ordered the halibut from the special menu. Both fish were excellent and came with an appetizer. Kosher restaurant located in the mid City area (I think) of LA. I seriously never heard of this restaurant until recently. My friend and I got like the idea of going here after we visited another Jewish deli the day prior and had sandwiches so big we didn't have room for latkes. So, my friend hit me up and told me this place is supposed to have good latkes. Got here around peak lunch time and it wasn't that busy so we were able to sit right away. Between me, and my friend, we split the latkes, some cheese blintzes, and a tuna melt. I will have to say that this place is very good. I haven't been to a lot of kosher restaurants in my time, but I would imagine this is pretty darn great when it comes to kosher restaurants. The tuna melt was made pretty darn well and it was perfectly crispy. The quiet self was really clean. It almost felt like a northern European type room with a lot of wood. Again, we came here for lunch around 1230 and it was pretty quiet. You could hear conversations almost on the other side of the room even though we tried to not to listen in. The service here was super attentive, and the folks were super nice. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience, and would love to come back here again. Also, it should be noted that this is or was Steven Spielberg's mom's restaurant. Her name escapes me and apologies for referring to this restaurant as such, because irrespective of famous ties, this is a quality establishment. read more

The food and service were outstanding. We took our family there for our daughter's birthday, and couldn't have been more pleased. As a table, we had two orders of fresh baked bread and butter, fish and chips, fish chowder, tuna melt, lasagna, and fettuccine with artichoke hearts and wild mushrooms. We also shared a slice of cheesecake and one of chocolate mousse cake. Every single dish was delicious. The portions were generous and no one left hungry. This place is definitely sort of hidden on the main drag of W. Pico amongst a large collection of Jewish restaurants. It only had a very small sign to start with, and with the new outside seating even that sign is hard to find. I didn't realize this was Steven Spielberg's mothers place, but there were tons of pictures of her and the family throughout the restaurant, as well as a TV playing some additional footage of the family. On entering, it was very clean and quiet, and looked recently refurbished. The host and waitress were both very pleasant. As a Kosher restaurant, they were serving what I understand to be a Kosher white wine at a pretty good price, "Baron Herzog Chardonnay". It wasn't great but it also wasn't very expensive. For lunch I had seen good reviews for the latkes and the fish chowder, so that's what I ordered. The latkes were quite good, very thin and extremely crispy on the sort-of frilly edges. They came with sour cream and not applesauce but more of a sliced and sautéed apples, which were quite good. The chowder had a pretty good flavor and some potatoes and a few pieces of small fish. I thought it was OK but definitely wasn't blown away. I really wanted to try the well-reviewed blintzes but didn't ... maybe next time! read more

Great ambience & service. Our server was Gabriel; very nice, respectful and great customer service. It's a homey place with good food; we order a few starters including the famous fish chowder ( OMG, order it without any hesitation), Santa Fe salad (yummy with a good creamy spicy dressing). My husband and I come here often for date night. Milky way is hands down the best and only kosher establishment in Los Angeles that has delicious authentic beer battered fish tacos. Our waiter, paul, is always so friendly and welcomes us warmly when we enter the restaurant. If you come here I would encourage you to sign up with their rewards system so you can get a free dessert or appetizer when you accumulate enough points. If you're not strictly kosher, don't bother. The restaurant didn't smell like food. I wondered whether I'd walked into a set (it is a Spielberg owned restaurant after all). The ambience was lacking. I think it's had its heyday. The whole place felt like a vacant homage to its original owner--mama Spielberg. The same videos played over and over again. Photos that should have felt warm but instead felt like crate and barrel ornamentation. The food was expensive and bland AF. The waiter and welcomer were very nice but the vibe felt off. It's kosher so it seems to attract predominantly kosher families. For me, I had the most bland "tuna melt" of my life, a boring glass of wine, and just kind of a weird vibe. I ate nothing there that was worthy of a return. I even began to question whether I had Covid because the flavors to the food were non existent. read more

Our server was slack, not providing basics for us such as plates, forks, Moreover when my friend was dissatisfied with her entree the server copped huge nonverbal attitude ie: disapproval. I came here to experience or see our galaxy. The magnificent 13.6 billion-year-old galaxy that is 100,000 light-years across and holds our solar system. Instead, I was greeted with lots and lots of pictures of Steven Spielberg. I believe the owner is a big fan of theirs. I really think Mr. Spielberg, as an homage to the owner's love for them, should film a scene here. Maybe a film about a Jewish boy who goes to film school and is told will never amount to anything but ends up being one of the best directors. This place does not show you the galaxy; instead serves you fish. In a way, fish is just as interesting as the galaxy. Had they not evolved into tetrapods, who come out of the water and evolve into humans, we would not be here. That's, of course, if you believe in evolution. So I ordered the fish and chips with a substitute of Ceaser Salad. The fish and chips came with a side of Veggie Chili Soup. I have to say the soup was absolutely magnificent. Talk about an understudy stealing the show. I highly recommend getting the veggie chili. Their fries are great too. Ceaser salad was legit The beer-battered fish was delicious. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It is best with lemon. Garlic Aioli and Chipotle Aioli are good dipping sauces but stick to lemon and tarter sauce only. Great lighting and atmosphere. This is such a quaint Kosher restaurant in mid city. The entrance is adorable and the decor inside is such a lovely homage to the Spielberg family (the restaurant was owned by Steven's mother and features many of her recipes). The restaurant recently went under renovation with tweaks to the menu and I am loving it. Definitely take a trip to the bathroom for a trip down movie memory lane. The menu is all kosher and vegetable and fish forward. There is no red meat on the menu and I do not miss it at all. Must orders are the latkes and thdeliciouse famous fish chowder. The latkes are traditional and served with sour cream and the most apple compote. They are the best I've ever had. The fish chowder is out of this world. It is creamy, savory and comes with a generous portion of fish and potatoes. I could eat an enormous bowl of this and be satisfied. Their burgers use impossible meat and are surprisingly delicious. The patty melt is perfect and tastes like a decadent burger. I love the oozing cheese, sweetness from the caramelized onions, and bite from the rye bread. Service is so kind and attentive.
