Thank you, Old Mill. We ordered takeout for five including all aspects of a meal from appetizers to desserts. Flawless. The food exceeded already elevated expectations all around. Particular respect for the chop salad, almond cake, and prime rib. Also, the service was outstanding. I felt so welcome by the staff while picking up my food even though I was not at all dressed suitably for dining out. Our only wish would have been to enjoy our meal at the restaurant, but that is merely a fault of the pandemic. Good food, nasty owner. The restaurant opens at 5:00 and reservations are not accepted for parties of 4. So I got there early to snag a table ( 4:50) and was seated. When my party of three more diners hadn't arrived yet, at 5:03, Terry, the owner, stormed over to me with arms outspread and scowled, "Where are they"? I smiled, thinking that he was joking, and replied, "They will be here; they are never late." He responded, "Well, we don't reserve tables." He then grimaced and marched away as if in a tantrum. Clearly I was way off thinking he had been joking. My party came at 5:12 and his hostility continued until 7:30 when he came over to our table and started cleaning it off and said (again with a scowl), "This table is reserved for 7:30!" Funny, a four-top is reserved??? Parties of 4 cannot reserve tables. Had he nicely told us in advance that we could only be seated for 2 hours, we would have easily complied. But since there was no line of patrons visible who were waiting for a table, we had no clue that he needed that table. Nothing warrants a host or owner to treat patrons so shabbily--especially since we all have been to this restaurant numerous times and were well meaning and polite. His response was so disproportionate to the situation that one can only conclude that he is not mentally stable. Serious anger issues. read more

A wonderful all around experience, excellent food, great and friendly staff, the ambiance exquisitely lovely.

We started with a delicious fish soup, even though it was a little salty. The salads with blue cheese were fresh and simple, but yummy. Quinoa cake with sweet potatoes and green beans was delicious. Chicken with mozzarella, provolone and thin pasta was very good. The complimentary strawberries dipped in chocolate were quite nice. Best part of the meal was the chocolate crepe filled with pistachio ice cream. The old mill is warm and cozy with a fireplace that makes you feel you are in someone's living room. For four years this has been our go to spot when coming to visit our daughter at Berkshire. She doesn't want to eat anywhere else! Her favorite meal is duck pate and steamed mussels with sorbet for dessert. I like to try many dishes. The lamb is always flavorful and perfectly cooked. The decor inside is lovely, the staff and owners warm and helpful and it's never a problem waiting for a table in the cozy bar with a nice bartender making good drinks. We will need to make special trips to the Old Mill once our daughter graduates. read more

My parents, who live in the area, love this restaurant and are basically regulars. Personally I love this place's soups, I've never, ever, had one that didn't taste phenomenal. I can not state enough that the flavor of the soup is not the reason behind the review. Tonight my family got take out from The Old Mill. I was enjoying the fish soup, and as always the taste was excellent. Sadly however as I savored the soup I very quickly found myself choking. Panicked I ran over to the sink and with time and effort managed to cough up what it is I had been choking on - a large and sharp fish bone. As I recovered from this experience my mom decided to call the restaurant to simply warn them to check the soup over for other customers to ensure my experience would be fully unique. Had the restaurant responded to this call in a rational manner that displayed any sort of regard for the well being of their diners, they would not be getting a one star review from me. I reiterate again that my issue is not with the food itself. The incident with the bone would have been easily forgiven had the restaurant shown any form of care over what happened. I get it - sometimes you miss a fish bone, that's life, mistakes happen. The person my mom spoke to on the phone both identified himself as the owner of this establishment and began telling her, repeatedly, that I was making my experience up. My throat is still currently stinging from having a sharp bone lodged in it as I write this, and the man was insisting my choking had been merely a figment of my imagination, and kept telling my mother, who had been worriedly next to me as I hacked over the sink and inspected to bone with me after I coughed it, that she must not have seen what she saw! I am not someone who normally leaves reviews. It really isn't the sort of thing I am interested in doing. Taste is subjective and I know everyone likes and dislikes different things. In this case, where the owner of a restaurant attempted to gaslight away an incident of literal choking, I feel an exception truly needed to be made. read more

Old Mill has always been one of our favorites. During the first few months of covid, we did take out. It worked out well. For the past month, we've decided to eat in the restaurant and it's worked out beautifully. There are less tables, room dividers between tables, and the chairs and tables are thoroughly sanitized before dining. The food has been wonderful! The pumpkin soup is like autumn in a bowl! Delicious! My husband is crazy about the tuna, I've tried a number of different things. The stand out special was the veal scaloppine. And the profiteroles with the chocolate sauce-divine! Had a lovely evening at the Old Mill! Terry (the owner) is a sweetheart and came around to check in on us several times to see how we were doing. Our waitress was similarly kind and capable and brought us super tasty food (burger, ice cream sundae, raspberry sorbet). We got there around 6pm on a Saturday evening and there were 6 parties ahead of us, meaning about a 45 min wait, but we sat in the bar next to a crackling fire and enjoyed every minute of it. Went here tonight to celebrate a family member's birthday...we received fantastic and warm service from the second we walked in the door until the second we left again. I was completely wowed by their specials as well as their summer menu. I had gazpacho and a strawberry lemonade from the bar (which was fantastic!) as well as the grilled zucchini small plate. For dessert they have so many options that all looked delicious. I had the apple berry cobbler. It was to die for! The best part of the night was our server. She picked up on the fact that we were celebrating a birthday and she brought out dessert with a candle and sang!! She was truly amazing and made the night very special for us all! :) I wish I could name her by name but I hope she'll get the chance to read this review. My only complaint is there aren't a lot of options for vegetarians and they don't have dairy free milk. However, the excellent and personalized service made up for it! I can't comment on the food or service because we never made it out of the car. The parking lot (bank parking lot next door, used by the restaurant at night) was impossible to navigate with the geriatric crowd driving without a care in the world for anyone but themselves. In the 8 minutes we sat in the parking lot waiting while a car was leaving so that we could take the space, we were almost hit three times, including by the woman who decided to block us and take the space we waited patiently for. As we watched the scene, we decided there was no way that the atmosphere was right for us, a middle-aged couple out to celebrate a wedding anniversary. The restaurant clearly draws a crowd of elderly, entitled people who haven't let their pushy, "survival in the city" ways go, despite being surrounded by the beauty of the Berkshires. You may wonder how any of this is the fault of the restaurant. Their no reservation policy along with lack of parking seems to bring out the worst in these grandmas and grandpas. In the end, I'm glad we had the experience we did before getting inside. It made us leave and we had a lovely dinner elsewhere. If you are over 75 and believe everyone should get out of your way, The Old Mill is probably a place you'll feel right at home. Enjoy! The rest of us can do better. read more

Let me tell you about the service this establish provided me this last Saturday evening. We arrived at the beautiful Old Mill and were pleasantly guided by their parking attendant who helped up park the car, opened the car doors and then escorted us to the entrance with his flashlight. We entered and were warmly greeted and seated at the bar area while we awaited our table. The barkeep, Tony made us some amazing martinis. The bar area was cozy and took us back in time to the origins of this historic establishment. We were seated and enjoyed some wonderful appetizers, wine and entres. All the food was fantastic, but I won't talk too much about it because what is important is what happens next... Towards the end of dinner, the host (possibly the owner) comes over to our table and discreetly asks us if we were driving a blue Subaru, to which I replied, "yes." He informed me in the most compassionate manner that there had been an accident and someone had backed into my car and caused some severe damage. He asked that he take me outside to show me. Sure enough the car was smashed hard, but the parking attendant took down all the relevant information on the other driver and they handled this situation with such grace. They later taped up my back windshield so I could make it home, they called the police and handled everything on my behalf and truly made it stress-free. On top of this, dinner was "on the house." They truly did not have to do this. It was not they who smashed my car in the parking lot. However, they felt I was greatly inconvenienced and decided to comp our meals anyways. Really, I was blown away by their level of service and care but it is very demonstrative of how the owner runs this establishment and how they treat each and every other customer. I want to thank you for the level of care you provided me this past Saturday and I hope this review is an indication of my appreciation. The worst restaurant experience in recent memory. I live in River North Chicago and I think I know a thing or two about stellar restaurant service. My two friends and I made dinner reservations for 8pm on Mothers Day. We arrived about :30 min early to have a drink at the bar. At approx 7:54 the hostess came to the bar with a small platter, grabbed our drinks and insisted that we move to our table-NOW. We did; a bit disturbed. Our waitress never introduced herself. She filled one drink order but never asked the rest of us for our drink order. I ordered a salad with vinaigrette dressing, but it came heaped with blue cheese in spite of me changing from blue cheese to vinaigrette. She said, "that's the way we do it." A few minutes later the hostess came by and asked how we were. When we mentioned that the waitress did not ask the rest of us if we wanted a drink refreshment, she said maybe its the way you (guys) are slurring your words (I was NOT). That was enough for us. We got up and walked out without looking back. We then rode south to the Boathouse in Lakeville and had a fabulous dinner experience. The Old Mill is snooty and a total disgrace to the otherwise friendly Berkshires (I am a native). I urge you to patronize other establishments in nearby villages and teach this establishment that their attitude is improper and intolerable. I can't remember the last time that was treated this poorly in what is supposed to be a jewel in the Berkshires. read more

Friends who spend time in the area highly recommended Old Mill for dinner. While they don't take reservations you can eat in the bar if the dining room is busy. From the moment we pulled into the parking lot we felt welcomed. Perhaps is was the wave from the kitchen staff! We were offered drinks and presented menus as we were seated. Included with our menus was a hand written specials sheet. After a chat with Mr. Moore, the owner and are charming waitress we ordered trout for DH and a veal chop for me. Our entrees cane with a field green salad with blue cheese crumbles and house dressing along with bread and a pimento cheese spread (yummy). I had inquired about a tomato-onion chutney or jam that was served with another entree and our waitress gave me a sample to taste on the bread/my meal. Now that's the way to a foodies' heart! Our main courses were perfectly prepared and presented. Hubby had requested additional veggies (great beans) in place if mashed potatoes and was thoroughly happy with his meal. My chop was divine with green beans and mashed potatoes. The wine by the glass special from from Spain was a treat, as well. Since we had spent the touring the area and nibbling we skipped coffee and dessert to get back to our porch to enjoy the sunset and foliage. Delicious meal. Thanks, chef. read more

I went to the Old Mill so many times that the waiters got to know me....my favorite table....my favorite cocktail....my quirky eating habits. I felt like a celebrity when I came in, even though my ambitions for stardom have waned with time. They really are welcoming and warm here. I must admit that when I was invited to a place called the Old Mill I was skeptical. I imagined tired old food and a geriatric crowd (which I will soon be a member of myself, I must admit). I sure was happy finding a completely energetic dining scene, a lively bar crowd and a creative menu. It's always- always- packed, as the New England dinner crowds traditionally arrive on the early side. I went with friends several times and with my parents on two or three occasions. Always had a perfect meal and excellent service. It's a lovely environment, as well. Go to the Old Mill. Bring some friends. Bring your parents. Sit at the bar and have fun. He loves the liver and says it's the best he has eaten and I am not only obsessed by the decor in the bar and dining room but love the Ahi Tuna as well as their Borscht and Fresh lemonades with Vodka! Dinner with friends last night. Arrived at 6:30 and listed in the book for party of four and went into the bar to wait for our call. Luckily our friends had arrived first and staked out a table in the bar so we had seats for our wait. Some nice drinks, some great conversation with excellent people. The time passed and we were called and seated. What I like about the OM bar is that the bartender asks under what name the reservation is listed and simply adds the bar tab on the final bill. Sweet and convenient. But what happens if there are three different Smith parties? Well, let them sort it out. We were three for the prime rib and one for the duck and were mildly disappointed by the entrees. The duck was not up to its previous standard, the cherries were a bit dry and the duck was a bit tough. The Prime ribs, all ordered medium rare, were lovely pink but a bit tough, as well. The house salad that come with the entrees was first rate, with generous crumbles of bleu chiz. So the food was only so-so, but the room is great and the company was fine, so we'll definitely be back, but with lowered expectations. And the noise level is moderate, which was a blessing, so we could all converse in normal tones. Thanks OM, for that! Still, a favorite place, but next time we'll duck the canard. read more

The Old Mill is a superior choice if you're looking for ambiance and atmosphere at your next Berkshire meal. Dimly lit with low ceilings and exposed wood beams, this restaurant delivers on the traditional New England setting that you'd expect from its name. One thing to know about the Old Mill before you go is that it's expensive. It would be quite easy for a couple to spend upwards of $100 on a meal here. As such, this place tends to attract rich old people, or at least financially comfortable old people. While I enjoy eating here (mainly because of the aforementioned setting), I'm sometimes mildly uncomfortable that there are no other diners in my age demographic. But on the bright side, old people aren't rowdy, so you won't have to experience other patrons detracting from the dining experience. The menu is more traditional than it is creative or inventive. I've been a few times and have tried a number of items. To me, the best thing at Old Mill is the truffle oil french fries. They're simply great! I wish more restaurants had this on the menu. Last night, I had a meal at the bar with a friend/colleague. The actual bar itself is small, but it does offer some booth seating which is almost as nice as the dining room. Even for bar diners, the restaurant starts you off with a sizable basket of bread and bread sticks along with a dish of butter and a dish of something else I wasn't able to identify. It was orange and definitely tasted like cheese and finely chopped tomatoes; it was really good and did not go to waste. You also get a small dish of Greek olives to go along with your bread basket. Rather than spring for a full meal, I decided to order a salad and an appetizer instead. The salad I ordered was called the simple green mixed salad, and its name exactly fit its contents. It was mostly lettuce with a few cherry tomatoes. When I ordered it, the waitress asked me if I wanted bleu cheese on it. I accepted, not realizing that the bleu cheese added $2 to the salad's original $4 price tag. While I did get a generous supply of cheese on the salad, it would have been nice if I had been told in advance that it was extra. Maybe the restaurant assumes money isn't an issue for its patrons. The appetizer I ordered was one of the night's specials, ravioli stuffed with gorgonzola cheese with a truffle oil sauce. Since I'm a big fan of truffle oil, I was really excited about trying this dish. While I realized that this wouldn't be a large dish since it was an appetizer, I was shocked by how small it actually was. There were only two pieces of ravioli on the plate, and I ended up being disappointed not only by this but the mediocre flavor of the dish. Separately, I really like all of the ingredients in it, but they just didn't work when put together. It's definitely not worth $10. Fortunately, the pitiful portion size of this appetizer was offset by the large basket of bread that I previously mentioned. One other thing that surprised me a little was that my friend was given a second drink (a cosmo) when she didn't ask for it. It was just brought to the table for her by the server when her first glass was empty. If this had been me, I would have been pissed about paying $8 for something I didn't specifically request. Good thing it took me almost the whole dinner to finish off the beer I ordered . . . To sum up, I think people really come to Old Mill because the dining environment is very nice; it's a great place for a night out with friends or for a romantic dinner with a loved one. Just be sure you have a nice cushion in your bank account before you come, though. read more

My boyfriend and I went here on December 30 to celebrate an anniversary and it was quite nice - I would go as far as to say one of the best options in that general area of the Berkshires. We were staying just over the border from Lenox, in NY, but it was still a nice ride and accessible and despite it being the night before New Year's Eve, we had no trouble getting a reservation for dinner. I would agree with the earlier review that was left by Danielle - it truly is an intimate yet rugged type of atmosphere and the atmosphere has a ton of potential. It does seem to attract the older crowd - sort of a late 60's to early 80's aged looking crowd and although that shouldn't deter from patroning the restaurant, that crowd does seem to appreciate a more traditional style meal - and the menu isn't all that creative or unique. It's just a nice, predictable sort of meal without surprises. I hate to sound negative, because the Old Mill really is lovely and has a great little bar/lounge area and the atmosphere is cozy. It would really be perfect if it could be a little more daring with their offerings. It is a little pricey, but not out of the ordinary and not so expensive that you flinch when you see the prices. Other than them seeming a little too anxious to clear our plates and pour the remainder of our bottles of wine (in an effort to move us along?) and the 'safeness' of the menu, it was a good experience and a nice spot to celebrate an event, with the atmosphere truly being the selling point. read more

I was very excited to have a "date" night, and was looking very forward to dinner at the Old Mill. I am very hard on servers, I guess it's in my blood- I personally was a waitress for more then half my life as well as having a "real" job- well let me tell you waitressing is the hardest job ever, and I watch every move servers make when dining out. Waiting on me can't be easy! yet I never complain, I know better! (kidding) That being said- I knew going to the Old Mill would be different, I can actually relax there- the servers and the food is the best in all of Berkshire County. We went to dinner on a Friday night- around 8pm the dining room was very busy- we had decided to eat in the bar anyway, it was so cozy. I started with a margarita right out of the gate, we sat and enjoyed our drinks we were not in any hurry to order and eat. There were tons of conversations going on all around us, and it was wonderful. We knew many of the people in there, which made it that much more enjoyable. Ok let's talk food- I had a wedge of Iceberg Lettuce with Blue Cheese and candied walnuts (?) it was so good, that could have been my dinner, but no- I had ordered Shrimp Scampi- both were AMAZING! I went here on Sunday evening 3/15 with my boyfriend for our Anniversary. We decided to dress up and enjoy a nice meal and since we were on vacation for a few days, my boyfriends dad recommended this place so we went here. It was empty, only one or two older couples enjoying meals. The hostess was nice and friendly and seated us. The waitress was nice also but when I went to use the bathroom I seen her look at me and talk about me to her coworker so that was kind of rude. The food was great. I took my mother there and we all loved it. The service was great and the food delicious. Homemade lemonade and a variety of bread started our dinner. The meat us local and cooked perfectly! Think old world glamour meets country charm. The bartender was funny and amicable. The host, who also happens to be the restaurant's owner, is welcoming, and his love for his place is reflected in the way he treats his customers (he carried our drinks from the bar to the dinner table once our table was ready) and in the way he talks about his restaurant. He truly cares, and he wants you to have a great experience. I fell in love with the restaurant's beautiful decor and with the food. Wow. Each dish was beautifully executed. My husband's steak was incredibly delicious. The pasta dish with shrimp was very good as well, but we believed it needed more pasta believe it or not; they were extremely generous with the shrimp, but not as generous with the pasta, so the ratio was a little off, but it was delicious nonetheless. We had the sundae for dessert, and it was an incredible end to our meal. read more

I was here almost 20 years ago, and was back in town today...remembering it fondly I came in with my husband for dinner. It did not disappoint and now I remember why I loved it. Friendly and warm staff, the owner sat us himself and discussed specials (each sounded better than the next). The food was spectacular! Driving back from the Lenox, we realized we had not had lunch nor dinner yet. Someone recommended the old mill for a fine dining restaurant with amazing food and rustic dining room. That is exactly what we got here. The food was amazing, and the dining room was well designed, clean, and decorated beautifully. The old mill is built inside an old house on top of a flowing stream. I absolutely loved the beauty of restored places like this. The floor is made of polished wooden planks that are slightly uneven, low ceilings, windows pointing to the woods and water out back, and flowers all over. I didnt like that the parking lot was filled while there was no one inside, I barely found a spot and was shocked when I entered and there was only one other table there at 5pm. Must be the staff. The prices here are high, but the food quality deserves it. Wine list is also impressive. I ordered the Duck, which was a good sized portion and was cooked juicy. If ever in the area, I know where Im going for a fine dining and beautiful decor. read more
