Out of the other two bars that were visited, this place was the busiest. St Paddy's day for a drink that led to bar hopping along Broadway. Last time we stopped by it was mellow. This visit, it was a little more lively and a mixed crowd. The music sucked whoever was in charge as it kept skipping and changing constantly. Not consistent whatsoever. It could be coming from the jukebox right at the front. People were out for drinks which it was pretty lively. Of course as it's also a dive bar with a pool table, people were having fun. The place was chill as most bar in Long Beach are. Nothing stuck up here with pretentious people. Everyone is here for the same thing, a dive bar and drinks. There was actually more than one bartender this time. Normally it's one who was taking care of everyone. And a mixed crowd, people all having fun. It's bigger than the other one we just came from But did notice some other guest from the previous bar doing the same thing we were, bar hopping. There's a decent amount of seating along the bar counter. Hi top tables along the front and entrance. Some in the back area as well and the main seating area thats along the other wall with a built in seating. Great for people watching and viewing the game of pool that's right in front of you. I think there's two pool tables. It's a simple fun place where you guessed it, all the locals and regulars visit. They do have happy hour which we found out a while back. Same as all the other bars along the area, it's street parking. I don't know if it's a regular thing but out front was a taco stand getting ready for the night. This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a bar. The manager, Matthew, was unbelievably aggressive and unprofessional. My female cousin was using one of the gender-neutral restrooms. None of the restroom doors had working locks, so my other cousin and our friend were simply holding the door closed to give her privacy. Instead of handling the situation professionally, Matthew stood outside the door yelling for her to hurry up. He yelled, "I'm gonna kill a bitch if I don't get in the restroom." When my cousin came out, he called her a "stupid bitch," said that "three men could have peed in the amount of time she took," and then said, "I'm gonna leave before I kill someone." When I confronted him about how inappropriate his behavior was, he identified himself as the manager and threatened to kick us out. No customer should ever be treated this way, especially by management. I won't be returning. read more

Went here a little after midnight last night, most of the waiters there seemed friendly and the atmosphere seemed pretty interesting. My partner went to go use the restroom before we were going to leave but the only one open was the one that doesn't have a lock. It's got one toilet with no stall and some urinals in there, my partner and I are both trans so he asked me if I could just wait by the door to make sure no one walked in. One of the waiters came up so I just told him someone was in there. He literally gave me a dirty look before asking if it was a girl in there. He then shouted over the door asking if they were done. My partner said "Almost" but he reached for the handle opening the door into me to shuffle me out of the way anyways while saying "Well I work here." he barged into the bathroom while my partner was still inside but he at least wasn't indecent by this point. I was so mad, we left right after and I'm never going back. No part of that was okay he mentioned something about his shift almost being over to my partner while he was in the bathroom but that's no excuse to be so unbelievably rude in a place that's supposed to be inclusive. I will not be back and I hope no one else ever feels that disregarded by this waiter again. I don't really write negative reviews because all jobs come with their stress but this bothered me on a bare basic human decency level. read more

I haven't been to a bar in almost 10 years, but yesterday I was really craving a Martini, so I asked a friend to join me. I arrived about 30 minutes before my friend and ordered a Martini. When my friend arrived, there were maybe 15 people in the entire bar. We ordered two Martinis from the bartender, Chase. His reaction was honestly priceless--he huffed, puffed, and threw his arms up as he turned around, almost as if we had just asked him to make drinks for a packed house. I'm not sure if Martinis are particularly difficult to make, but apparently two of them were a tall order. We decided to step outside to the back patio for a cigarette, expecting our drinks to be waiting when we came back in. Nope. Chase never made them. Chase appeared to be high on something. I have loved this bar and have been coming here for the past six years, but unfortunately I will not be returning. My friend was using the restroom when the manager, Matthew, threatened her for "taking too long" and called her a "stupid bitch." It was shocking and incredibly disappointing to witness someone in management treat a woman this way. I was excited to come here for my girlfriend's birthday, but unfortunately the experience was disappointing. I was recommended here from a friend. The line for the bathroom was very confusing, and since we're not from here, we were just visiting for a few days (out of state) we had no idea where the back of the line was or that we were standing near the bathroom area. Instead of politely explaining, some girls screamed at us to get to the back of the line, which felt rude and unnecessary. I believe they were not having a great night, but i hope they had a better rest of their night. We were only here for about 10 minutes before deciding to leave because the vibe was ruined for us so we headed to another bar. False advertising, rude staff, and a hot, stuffy venue. This place was a total disaster. Their Instagram explicitly said clothing check was complimentary, but when we got there, it was suddenly $5. When I showed the post, the person working the check gave me major attitude and completely dismissed me. It wasn't about the money, it was about being lied to and then treated like I was the problem. We were in and out in five minutes because the whole vibe was ruined. The place was miserably hot, the energy was off, and honestly, it felt like the owners just want your cash and couldn't care less about the experience. This bar is a stain on the gay bar scene. We were waiting on the bartender who took forever even though the bar was practically empty, but whatever. We waited patiently. Then when we ordered and my friend was going to pay, the bartender said "it's cash only. There's an atm over there. Come back to me when you have cash." Then he quickly snatched away the drinks and walked away. I'm not going to pay a fee just to withdraw money, then pay for an overpriced drink, and give a tip on top of that to a rude bartender. Hubby and I were checking out the neighborhood in Long Beach and we came across the Mineshaft. It was a warm spring day and St. Paddy's Day, so we decided to pop in for a drink. Let me say this up front - don't be afraid of going into a gay bar if you're not gay. I've rarely felt more welcome and at home than I did today at the Mineshaft. Many of the people here are long-time regulars with one man saying he's been coming in every day for the past forty years! The music was terrific and had us singing at the bar. Although the jukebox was playing when we got there, a DJ showed up and then the place really started hopping. The bartenders were attentive and everyone was so nice. They even had one of my favorite red blends at a decent price. There are TV's and pool tables for those who want to do something besides drink and chat. They don't serve food, so make sure you stop someplace else before you start drinking here. I'm so happy that we stopped into this local pup and can't wait to go back. read more

I did not feel welcomed at the door. I couldn't make this up. My other half and I (we are both men of a certain age. I am black, my husband is white.) approached the front door, and were greeted by the door person who was talking to an intoxicated person. He told us to go right in, cool. This is where it gets a little dodgy. The intoxicated person says directly to me, "I want to see your identification." I laughed it off, but then they said "No, really show me." It started to get very uncomfortable. That's when the door person tells me that the intoxicated person was one of the owners of the bar. I was surprised and stunned, but I showed them my identification. They could see that I was surprised at their behavior and then this is what they said to me, "You're a good looking black man. I just wanted to flatter you." They never asked for my white (equally handsome) husband's id. Still a bit stunned at their behavior, we went into the bar. Something just didn't sit right with both of us, so we left after one drink. So, this is one of two things: either it's an intoxicated bar owner so out of it they are inconsistently enforcing id checks, or it is an intoxicated bar owner exhibiting racist behavior. In either case, it was an uncomfortable situation and we won't be back. read more

I came here on a Sunday for a night out with my best friend. We were only here for a few hours but I really enjoyed my time and the vibes at this bar. There was a lot of eye candy, but of course, typical me didn't approach anyone. Drinks were fairly decently priced compared to other bars that I am used to in Los Angeles. I believe each drink was around $7 when I was there. The bartenders and staff were really nice. The music was good. The drinks were good. The crowd was good. Front of the building is a western wooden 19th century store facade. The interior ceiling is low w/ heavy timbered beams to simulate an old fashioned mine. The emphasis is on the big square shaped bar manned by a shirtless slim, young bar-t, and the 3 pool tables w/ all of them engaged in play. Sunday was packed, and music was loud. We went on a platform away from the bar to get away from the music. No such luck since there were speakers nearby. After spending time here, we concluded that a bar patron from 1980 could be dropped in, and he would scarcely know he was in the first quarter of the 21st century. 3 Yelp stars. read more

Have frequented this bar for more than 20 years. Waited at the bar for more than 10-minutes and there was no service. Went behind the doors, inquired what was going on! Straight red head said get the fuck out... I said we are just waiting to be served... he approaches me... said get the fuck out, 'we have a gas leak.' Then I'm 86 from the bar... When I took photos is when they took pictures, then had the bouncer, Richard Taylor" ask me to leave. No drama, but clearly a shit-show! Ahhh, sweet little Mineshaft, my bar, my place, my people!! I miss it so. My boyfriend and I live right across from here and it was the first bar we went to when we moved to Long Beach! Mineshaft has always been so welcoming and always has a good, diverse crowd of LGBTQ+ people!! When they're open, they have a juke box, pool tables, a little smoking lounge, the works. The drinks are reasonably priced compared to most bars around the area, and I've always had a pleasant experience with all of the bartenders! During COVID-19 they created a patio using some of the parking spaces out front, and did it up with some cute, mood lighting! Douglas was always our bartender, and he is just so accommodating and friendly. With the ban being lifted (for you guys outside of California, out door dining was just now instated!), I crave the day for the Mineshaft to reopen. Such a fun, safe, queer friendly bar. Used to love the Mineshaft. But after the pandemic the place smells like a bathroom that has a toilet that hasn't been flushed for a long time. The bathrooms smell better than the bar.
