It's unfortunate that because they do good detective work, they are going to charge astronomical prices which push out working class people. They are taking advantage of people who are sick and desperate by charging that much. They are now like all the other people working in mold who prey on the scared and immune compromised. While they appear to be very competent, I felt I was taken advantage of by spending several thousand dollars for them to do some dust samples and send them to a lab for analysis. I already knew my house had mold since my doctor had tested my body for mold, and the test came back positive for several species of mold. The Mold Guy was recommended by the doctor's office as very skilled. I scheduled an appointment . On the day of the appointment, my gut said "I don't have the money to spend on this right now on mold test of house" (I was so sick, I was already out of work). I told the Mold Guy when he showed up I didn't feel like doing the inspection right now, and asked him how much he "trip fee" was if I were to pay him and he just leave. He never answered that question, and kept talking. He was calm not overtly pushy, but persuasive. I spent several thousand dollars to find out my house has mold (which I already knew since my body had mold) but he didn't do any investigation at all as to where it was. Others who spent thousands of dollars told me The Mold Guy spent spent half a day or more digging and probing the house to determine where the mold was, and they received an extensive report. I received lab test results, but no report. I've looked online, and the cost of the 3 lab tests together would might have been around a thousand, but I was charged way more than that, which is why I feel taken advantage of. I do believe they are very skilled in their trade. If you are considering them, just make sure you (a) have thousands of bucks set aside for the mold testing (b) money set aside to do the repairs (c) you talk w/ them on the phone before they drive out and have them line item exactly what they are doing and the cost of each line item. If you are not ready to do the repairs, probably better to hold off on doing the mold testing of your house and just have your doctor test your body for mold. If your body has mold, then you are on the tough road of figuring out if the mold is from the air around your house, your house, your car, your work location, your food, your water, your vitamins/supplements). p.s. I did speak w/ a fellow patient at the doctor's office and he/she said they had one mold tester, that was pretty sloppy, he/she then hired The Mold Guy and Mold Guy found stuff the other guy missed, and she was really happy w/ The Mold Guy's work. read more

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! I am totally amazed at the kindness, generosity & professionalism of Mark. RIght at the holidays, Southern California encountered some of the hardest rains in years. These rains caused our power to go out in our house, and the delay in our landlord resolving this issue then caused a mold issue because of the lack of ventilation. Currently, our roommates and the landlord are in a serious conflict over the resolution of this issue, but at the moment, any repairs are coming out of my pocket. So, I called "The Mold Guy, Inc." with literally $20 cash and the serious need for a professional to help me verify that the mold is because of the rain, not our negligence. After consulting with me for over 30 minutes, Mark came and visited my house to take a look at the mold. When I tried to offer him the $20 that I had, he refused. This is community service at it's finest here folks. Here I am, a 20 something year old girl in L.A., being threatened and pushed around by our landlord, and Mark takes time to provide his services despite our finances. We had health problems for months and the doctors couldn't determine what was wrong with us. As a last resort we figured we'd do a mold test on our house and I am so happy we did. Mark was extremely helpful and through on his inspection. He was understanding and considerate of our situation. And he found traces of 3 different molds (one of which was toxic black mold) in our house, all of which are toxic to people and our poor little dog. We hired The Mold Guy to come and inspect our home. He did a very thorough job and my wife said they were professional and thorough. However, he completely freaked us out. He said someone in my wife's condition should never live in our home. He charged us $2500 JUST FOR THE INSPECTION and wanted another $4k to run the test from all the areas he looked at. I had another mold guy test a year before and he found nothing. My wife has immune issues so we're hunting for the problems. I didn't feel good about a $2500 inspection fee and another insane bill for tests (he's going to reply he discloses his fees up front, but I honestly didn't know NO tests would be done for $2500). So, I got TWO other opinions. After $2000 in tests we found out... NO MOLD, NO TOXINS. NONE. This guy almost freaked us out into selling our home. His reputation is an alarmist who over charges for tests and suggests insanely expensive remedies. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE. read more

I am so grateful to the staff at the Mold Guy and Jason who has helped me in two different houses. I was originally deterred from using The mold Guy since they stated they are more extensive in their testing and charge more than most, and it could cost 2-3K for an inspection - I thought that was/seemed unnecessary. However, inspection fee is around $600 and then whatever tests they need to do is charged for each test. You can speak to the Inspector so that you are mindful and strategic of what tests to take though. As a renter it is not worth it to do very extensive testing, if your landlord is willing to let you out of lease - and if that's your goal, which the landlord usually is inclined to do when there is a mold problem. I still highly recommend having an inspection done by the Mold guy and paying for the inspection yourself as you then own the report -for legal purposes. Because not all mold inspectors are created equal. There are many bad fish in the sea. I was totally screwed by another inspector, whom I had used in a previous building, I thought he was trustworthy so I had my landlord arrange and pay for him. I had no idea this inspector, not the Mold Guy, would end up changing his opinion based on who paid him. His inspection was $1,200, that my landlord paid, and despite lab numbers off the charts he said it was safe to live there. Then I had the Mold Guy come to do an extensive second opinion inspection for $1,700, reviewed the testing done by the other guy and confirmed the massive problems. Not that big of a price difference either if you think about all the money this has cost my health, and the samples the Mold Guy took from wall cavities vs. the other guy who took pointless ambient air samples. It is very easy for the landlord to hire shady mold inspectors who do ambient air samples that show nothing, and say there is no mold problem. Even though mold is in 80-90% of all buildings in LA. I highly recommend anyone suffering from mold to do an ERMI test yourself first (which is trustworthy, it was literally developed by the EPA) educate yourself by listening to moldfinders radio podcast with Brian Karr, and finally call the Mold guy for an inspection for your sanity so you can 100% know where the issue is, for legal purposes if your landlord has been negligible and as a result you have incurred medical problems and costs, and whether to decide to ask for remediation or to move. I wish I would have just done this from the beginning, it is certainly what I am doing now and will continue to do from now on. read more

There is not enough space on yelp or enough words to express my gratitude and thanks to Mark Levy. Several weeks ago, we rented an older home built in 1952 in the Rancho Palos Verdes area. Because of its location and quality of schools, this area is in high demand. As such, I never imagined or thought there would be the problems that Mark uncovered during a mold inspection. The reason I called Mark in the first place was because of a large amount of black mold that was under the sink against the back wall upon move in inspection. Despite my realtor's remarks that all houses in the area had mold and could be cleaned with soap/water/bleach, i had an uneasy feeling and called Mark on a Friday afternoon to inspect the property the next day. The reason for our move to this area was because our 2 year old son has asthma and his doctor recommended we move out of the SF valley to the beach area where the air is cleaner. What Mark found as he inspected the house was horrendous. He discovered addtional areas of mold throughout the kitchen, appliances and furnace. There was also extremely high content of moisture in the walls. The attic was a disaster - extremely dirty, covered with asbestos, including the vents. The exhaust from the bathrooms were directed into the attic (apparently a big no-no in construction) as well leaving more mold deposits. Right there and then an there, we knew moving into this home would be extremely dangerous and cause irreversible health issues for my son. Upon completion of the inspection, Mark recommended testing to confirm our suspicions. 3 days later, we had the verbal results of the test showing that the home did indeed contain toxic mold - SEVERAL kinds. 2 days later he had a written report and lab results that showed the home held dangerously high contents of black toxic mold. I can't even begin to think what would have happened had Mark not been so kind to inspect this home for us at the last minute. He was genuinely concerned for our family's safety and our healh and went to great lengths (even working over the weekend) to ensure we had the documentation needed to terminate our lease. The scary part of this whole situation is that the owner was made aware of the issues and claimed she had the home remedied in just 2 days - which, is impossible as the entire kitchen needed replacement along with the ventilation system. Without a doubt, Mark is the best and I can't recommended him highly enough. I think Mark is probably one of the most genuine and caring people I know. His expertise and experience in his field is exemplary. I will NEVER move into a home thqat is not brand new without Mark's inspection first. Thank you , Mark! read more

I had the Mold Guy come out to assess my property for mold a little over a year ago. I had read all the rave reviews and was really eager to finally figure out what was going on in my house. I thought they would help me dig into the causes but that wasn't the case. They just pointed out all the potential things that may be an issue. I had another inspector come out before and I thought they would be much more thorough so was willing to pay their steep fees but after everything just felt I didn't even come close to getting my monies worth out of it. For over a $1k I really didn't learn anything new about my home. I was also disappointed that having been a former client, I recently discovered mold during a remodel and called them 3 times, and left voicemails and they didn't return a single phone call. I even spoke to one of the guys for a couple seconds before the call dropped and he didn't even try to reach me back. I tried the office but it went to vm. Just really disappointed. I spent a lot of money with them last year so you would think the least they could do is call me back. In the end, I had to find another inspector to come out. Never heard from them. read more

This review is long overdue, but better late than never! Mark is incredible. He is a true gift and I will be forever grateful to him. I had a mystery illness for 7 years before it was finally discovered that my body was toxic with mold. My doctor recommended that I have my house tested and recommended Mark. Mark is highly skilled and very knowledgable about finding hidden mold and also knowledgable about CIRS (mold illness). He found mold in multiple areas of my house. I remediated it, but decided to move due to the trauma I went through there. When trying to find a new safe house, I called Mark again to assess a home which was in escrow. He saved me once again by finding mold and I dropped out of escrow. Thank goodness for him because my healing depends on me living in a safe space. Beware! One word - marauders. The most expensive testing and sampling. Most companies charge $50 per sample. Some $25. This company charges $135 per sample fee. Most companies charge $250 for inspection. Some are free. The Mold Guy will also sell you a DNA test your do not need. Also, their recommendations are the most destructive. They find the most expensive way to remedy the problems and then they refer you to the most expensive restoration companies. read more

I cannot express enough appreciation for Brian from the Mold Guy, Inc. He came highly recommended by a friend. Brian is extremely professional, knowledgeable, patient and dedicated to his work and customers well-being. After having rapidly developed some mysterious health issues and subsequently discovering a black colored mold in my home, I contacted Brian to do a mold inspection. Brian explained the process in detail to me and answered all of my questions. He took air samples and dust samples and did some VOC testing. We ended up having the toxic black mold and other toxic molds. Brian provided a detailed report, analysis and remediation recommendations that also considered health safety precautions. He patiently went over the report results with me. I ended up having to do a series of testing due to additional flooding. Brian was available even on short notice. I've been so ill since Oct 13, 2016...after numerous visits to many doctors and then the Emergency Room at Cedars Sinai...my brother in Dallas tells me that my symptoms sound like Black Mold poisoning...so I went online and found Home Advisor and put my information into their site...The Mold Guy came up...I looked at his info and THANK GOD that I did...they immediately called me and set up a day to come to my Hollywood apartment and their testing...they even suggested an 'additional test' that that was not in the original price...but was very happy that I did it...and they RUSHED my results so that I could get them back so the building owners could start reimbursing me for my Pet Hotels bills...The Mold Guy found Chaetomium Golbosom mold in my apartment and in HIGH LEVELS...so as soon as I turned this info over to my building they began remediation immediately. I have been on Yelp for a number of years and never had the urge to write anything on this website. I'm not one to complain about terrible service or bad food when eating out. I usually just roll with it. What has compelled me today to post this is the absolute Professionalism that was given to me when I called Marc at The Mold Guy, Inc. I had the horrible misfortune of encountering mold in my closet at the beach in Venice. I spoke to my landlord and was able to approve Marc to come in and inspect the apartment. Not only was the inspection comprehensive and informative, but Marc had a genuine interest in hearing me speak and was more than willing to bounce ideas and thoughts off of me. I would say that his business will flourish for years to come based purely on the genuine attitude and demeanor in which he carries himself. After the detailed inspection, I was sent a full report and lab report as well. Not even 48 hours later and I had the proof I needed to give to my landlord. She was unwilling to accept the fact that there was a major problem and was (quite frankly) difficult to deal with, so in some ways it's sad I'm moving out of my apartment of 4 years, but with the time and care that Marc provided, my health was always his top concern. Jason just left our home and I immediately jumped on Yelp to leave him 5 stars. We have not yet received our results, but that is inconsequential. Jason is knowledgeable, professional, thorough, patient, I cannot say enough good things about him. Mold inspections can tap into people's relationships with money, health, family, etc. Jason was understanding and incredibly helpful. We asked copious questions, and he patiently and thoroughly answered each one. At no point did we feel mislead or upsold. We are aware this is not an exact science. I called the Mold Guy into my home because me & my children were having some health issues & sensitivities. We all had been experiencing discomfort for awhile. I was having all sorts of different allergies. Constant sinus problems & even breathing issues. I felt miserable and tried seeking out Doctors. I still didn't feel any better with all the different medications. Some time ago, I had a flood in my basement. We dried it, sprayed it & bleached some areas... opened windows & assumed all was well.
