When my gf and I decided to celebrate our anniversary, we decided a nice dinner out was a great idea. Now, if you live in or near Auburn, you know that the choices are limited. We had a nice dinner previously at the Club Car and decided to try the MC since the CC was packed. My gf had the seafood pasta special and liked it. I had the filet. I specifically stated when asked for it to me cooked to a medium rare. The sides were roasted baby carrots and potatoes. Now I've read many of the reviews and it appears service has been spotty. On this night our server was very attentive and we were seated quickly (we arrived early evening around 6:30). Our food arrived fairly quickly. So our take is that the service that night was good for us. That for me is where the happiness ended. My filet was way undercooked. And I've noticed that seems to be a common thing from other reviews. It also was not a premium cut of meat as it had stringy and chewy tissue through a lot of it. The steak knife was very dull and made for more work than I expected. The roasted carrots were nearly raw. The little potatoes were good. Since my gf had a pasta dish it was clear to me that by the time they "fixed" my plate that she would be finishing her dish and we had plans for after that was time sensitive, so I did not complain. In fact I probably would not have left this review if I had not seen that they charged a credit card service fee. It is only $3, but it is ALSO illegal in California. When I saw this had been brought to their attention previously and they still do it, I felt I had to post this. The best ribeye on the planet! Honestly everything is delicious! The bread pudding is soooooooo good and when they have it I have to try and get in to have it! The ambiance is cozy and romantic! Had a delicious meal at Moneky Cat last night. Easily made a reservation for 7:00 pm through Open Table the day before We went early and sat at the bar and had drinks with friends. The bartender was friendly and attentative. The hostess made sure we knew our table would be ready for us at 7:00 and came over and seated us right on time. Our server was very attentive and made sure to get me the Short Rib entree I wanted for dinner because there were only two servings left. The Short Ribs were amazing! Flavorful, tender and had a delcious sauce that went great with the mashed potatoes and carrots. My husband had the sea bass and other couple had the scallops/risototto. They all enjoyed their meals. We came here to celebrate our anniversary. We made a quick reservation and got in. We had a apple brie and that was yummy we also both had the tomato blue cheese soup. That was so good. I had the duck and hubby had the rib eye. The potatoes were fresh and soft. The broccoli looked good with cranberries. I also got the lemon cake to go and that was yummy too. The food tasted all right, nothing special. I had salmon that was bland, though cooked correctly, not too dry. The service was very good, but they added an extra charge on our bill for using a credit card. My husband wanted to subtract a charge from the tip for that, plus seating us next to a huge family with noisy kids. I thought the decor was boring, especially the bar area. Both the Salmon dish & Scallop Risotto. Staff was incredibly friendly but the food beyond subpar in flavor! The seared Ahi app was about 2 oz ahi with a ton of cabbage. Had been once before for lunch and wasn't super impressed, but the atmosphere was nice (cold) but nice and the waitress (same waitress) was definitely 5stars so we decided to give it another go and keep our reservations. The one negative review you immediately notice on Yelp? That reviewer has a habit of complaining at other local establishments. They waited 2 hours for a table? Did they show up at 6AM? Sorry but we are locals, have gone to Monkey Cat nearly a dozen times in the past 2 years, various times of day/week, that does not happen. Their food, service, and attention to details is amazing. The current owner, who took over a couple of years ago, has really stepped up the offerings. We started of with the crab cakes by suggestion of our waitress Shannon, followed by the loaded baked potato soup and the blue cheese bisque. Absolutely delicious is an understatement. I requested more of a keto friendly dish and Shannon suggested the filet with vegetables. It was cooked to perfection and ranks in the top 3 best meat entrees I've ever had. The place was nice inside, but it took awhile for then to acknowledge the fact we were at the front counter waiting for a table. Once seated, the experience got much better. The waitress was very nice and courteous. She recommended drinks and told us about the specials. She recommended wine and desserts. The food was very good, I had the chicken florentine and the wife had the seafood pasta. Both dishes were excellent. We also shared a dessert which was also very good. This place is phenomenal. We started with the Apple Brie crostini which had a nice kick and the peppery arugula wasn't just for garnish. Then we shared the Short rib special with mashed potatoes and the duck leg with butternut squash risotto. Both were delicious! The duck was slightly overdone, but flavorful and tender in the center. The real stars were their desserts!! We were full but they were so worth it!! The tiramisu was light but rich, and the peanut butter candy bar cheesecake thing was to die for!!! I live in the neighborhood and have eaten at Monkey Cat for about 20 years. It used to be stable and reliable and one of our favorites. We recently took a guest there and were embarrassed at how bad the food was. Two of us ordered the salmon, which I have ordered many times before. Unbelievably, it was served skin side up, with a cold apricot glaze on top. It was awful, and served with a spoonful of cold rice and some mushy vegetables. The server was indifferent, maybe her first day on the job. It breaks my heart that one of my favorite restaurants that we have supported for many years has declined to the point where we won't be going back.
