First time staying at the historic Monterey Hotel centrally located in downtown Monterey where the shops and restaurants are close to Fisherman's Wharf. We've stayed in Monterey multiple times at other hotels. We saw this hotel rate was 50% less than other hotels in the area. It's a charming hotel with good customer service. I always call to confirm reservations and discovered our reservation was placed for the wrong date. I think it had to do with the third party website, but they fixed it. There are a few things to contend with as you stay here and you pay for what you get. There is a 3-minute loading zone outside the hotel to unload and load your bags. $30 for valet parking but we decided to park our car in one of the public parking lots over night for $24 each night. The first parking lot recommended on the website on Calle Principal is very small and was all full. I asked the front desk and was recommended to go to the east garage on Franklin and that was much bigger and I was able to find a spot. It's kind of inconvenient but something we were ok with and knew in advance. The room was spacious. It's a historic hotel, so no central HVAC. There was a fan and you can open the windows but I wouldn't recommend staying here when the weather is hot. The bed sheet had a couple of stains on it and I called the front and they brought up sheets right away. Also noticed stains on the lamp shade and carpet floor. There is a small gym downstairs and you can get ice. Although the lights were off and some other light was flashing like in one of those horror movies! Also maybe this was due to COVID but they do not clean your rooms daily and clean them after you leave. If you call them, they will bring you towels and etc. We weren't staying very long, so we felt that was ok. I can see why this hotel gets some unhappy reviews but for us this is just fine. Overall, a charming historic hotel with its quirks. I liked the parlor rooms with the antique telephone. Nice area to read a newspaper. Thanks to smaller hotels like this one, families can afford to have a nice little beach trip and not have to pay $400 a night like at other hotels nearby.

My boyfriend booked a one night stay here on Saturday 6/29/24. I believe he said the room cost less than $400. It's still pricy though just for a night stay. The hotel was ok. 1.The elevator had a sign saying not to hold the door open too long or it will break down. 2. Our room was small and did not have A/C, microwave or mini fridge but we did have a ceiling fan. Apparently there are two type of rooms to book from online. They have historical and deluxe rooms. Deluxe rooms have the microwave and refrigerator. 3. When the ceiling fan was in use, it was loud. We had to turn it off so that we can sleep. 4. The walls are thin. 5. The hotel does not have parking onsite. You can valet your car for $30 day which is what we did or park at a near parking garage/lots. Overall, our stay was not bad. Location of the hotel is great. It's located near many restaurants and only 8 min walk to the Old Fisherman's Wharf.

    Urine spots on the sheets

Under no circumstances should anyone book this hotel. We booked a standard queen room for 3 nights and checked out after the first night. There were multiple problems with the room, but the worst were the MULTIPLE piss stains on the sheets that looked so fresh I wonder if they even changed the sheets. The toilet didn't work. A single flush would swirl for hours. No wonder the last customer pissed the bed. The room was also incredibly small and didn't look anything like the pictures on the web site. The entire room consisted of the bed, and two feet of space around the bed and that's it. This property is extremely shady as they also requested us to cancel the booking through the website we used, and instead pay them directly. I cannot under any circumstances recommend this hotel to anyone staying in downtown Monterey. Instead, spend a little bit more and book anything else in the area.

We enjoyed their rooftop spa overlooking the bay- next level. The entrance to the hotel opens up to a beautiful first floor with ocean view, large fireplace, sofas and seating areas, and a small bar. The hotel offers a nightly happy hour and musical performances. During our visit we had the pleasure to discover a highly talented artist by the name of Adrea, who has the most incredible voice and presence. We were so impressed by her and were very fortunate that she performed both nights of our visit. It was a performance we would have gladly paid to see, she is a rising talent for sure. I can't state how exceptional our experience was to enjoy the music in such an elevated atmosphere, relaxing by the fire, enjoying the outstanding craft cocktails by their highly talented mixologist. Schooners is not to be missed, the food is as outstanding as the ocean view! A special mention to the superior customer care provided by Pracha, a guest service manager at the hotel, who is an absolute star. And yes, the long review is a love letter to the Monterey Plaza Hotel, until next time!

The lobby has an older, vintage feel to it, which gave it some charm. Unfortunately, the check in experience wasn't the best. The front desk receptionist wasn't very friendly or welcoming, so it didn't exactly start our trip on a positive note. Our room with two queen beds was pretty standard, but it was clean and had a beautiful view overlooking the water, which was definitely the highlight. The service throughout our stay was pretty disappointing. I called the front desk to ask for extra bath towels, and after waiting 30 minutes with nothing delivered, I had to call again. They finally arrived another 20 minutes later, which seemed way too long for such a simple request. The shower was also confusing because the hot and cold labels were reversed, and the water pressure was extremely weak. Neither of those things ruined the trip, but they definitely made the stay less enjoyable. We also ordered room service around 7:30pm. Jerry, who took our order, was very friendly and told us it would take about 45 minutes. An hour later there was still no food, so I called back around 8:45. Jerry apologized, checked on the order, and said it would be another 10 minutes before offering to personally bring it up. I appreciated his effort, but waiting well over an hour for room service was frustrating. To make matters worse, they already charge a service fee and then tack on an additional 20% service charge. The food wasn't worth the wait either. The ceviche lacked flavor and the portion was tiny, the ahi tuna wraps were just okay and didn't taste very fresh, and the Wagyu burger was dry and underwhelming. The fries were probably the best thing we ordered. Overall, I don't see myself staying here again, and next time I'd rather book the InterContinental instead.

When we decided to extend our stay by an extra night, our harbor-view room wasn't available for the additional night, but they went out of their way to make it work so we didn't have to switch rooms. We really appreciated that! Parking was also very reasonably priced at $25, especially compared to other hotels in the area. The room itself was spacious, the bed was very comfortable (firm, just how we like it), and the harbor view was absolutely perfect. We were a little concerned after reading reviews about the sea lions being noisy, but we actually loved hearing them from the balcony! Once the balcony door was closed, we couldn't hear them at all, and they never disturbed our sleep. One of our favorite perks was the complimentary binoculars available to guests--they were a fun touch for watching the harbor. And don't miss the sunrise from the fourth-floor rooftop terrace--it's absolutely beautiful! There were just a few minor things that could be improved. The hotel only has one elevator, and it can be quite slow during busy times. We also wish the freshly baked cookies were available throughout the day. They were put out around 3:00 p.m., but they disappeared almost immediately because they were so popular. When we arrived, our room temperature was around 78°F. We called the front desk to ask about the A/C and were told someone would come up. Security arrived and explained that the hotel doesn't have air conditioning, so the options are to use the fan or open the balcony door. It would have been helpful if the front desk had shared that information when we called. We left the screened balcony door open while we were out the next day, and the room cooled down nicely. The only other thing we wished the room had was a microwave. Overall, these were very minor issues compared to everything we loved about our stay. The location, views, comfortable rooms, and outstanding customer service made for a wonderful experience.

The service was exceptional from the valet to the bellhop to registration and restaurant staff. It was a very nice, spacious and clean room with alot of thoughtful attention like providing refillable water bottles, robes and an amazing Nespresso machine. There was also a wine bar and snacks available for purchase. The hotel had a wonderful scent throughout and we enjoyed walking through the ocean vibes staircase featuring a jellyfish. Definitely look for that! We loved having our anniversary dinner at The C Restaurant, but that will be another well earned review on it's own. However, we did have two negative experiences, one was that we waited a bit too long for our car at the valet once and there was an accidental spa charge on our receipt when checking out. I still gave them 5 stars because they rectified it right away and even removed the valet charge for us, which was much appreciated. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and had a warm charm that made it easy to relax after a day of exploring the city. One of the highlights of our stay was how the hotel carried such a unique atmosphere and history. It wasn't just a place to sleep--it felt like part of the adventure. Between the ocean views, cozy spaces, and local touches, it really captured the spirit of Monterrey. And then there were the ghost stories. Whether you're a believer or just love a good tale, they add an extra layer of fun and mystery to the stay. If you're someone that believes (or not), go to the front desk and ask for the "book". It had 78 pages of first hand accounts of unexplained happenings from guests. We had a very small moment ourselves, while I was sharing what I uncovered about the ghosts with my significant other in the morning, suddenly the bathroom light just turned on. Nobody was around and they do run on sensors. Not a significant event but certainly was well timed. Overall, Hotel Del Monte struck the perfect balance between comfort, history, and a touch of playful spookiness. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Monterrey that has access to a military installation--especially if you're looking for more than just a hotel, but a memorable experience.

The interior is also gorgeous, and it's amazing how well they've kept up the history of this place. We stayed in a queen suite, which was very outdated. Because of how old the buildings are, there is no A/C, which is typically fine, but we happened to be there on one of the warmest days of the year. Our room had an odd smell to it, and the amenities are pretty minimal. However, we expected this due to the age of the building. Our only negative was that we were given the first room next to the entrance and stairwell, which was not fun to hear folks stomping up and down the stairs and slamming the doors. On Friday morning, several people we knew were awoken by the "active shooter drill" announcement at 8:00am. I understand this will happen on a naval academy base, but I wish we were warned about upon check-in just so we were aware and not startled in the morning.
