By 9am you run out of lemon poppyseed muffins. I'm sure they've been gone for some time. Sure, your other muffins are fine, but they're nothing spectacular to write home about. No lemon poppyseed. Well, I'm the fourth reviewer, but the first to have actually imbibed a muffin at the Muffin Shop and write about it. I've imbibed a few, actually, as I used to drop off my ex-roomie at church down the street and then haul my heathen ass over to the Muffin Shop before the townies packed the place, as they are wont to do after about 9 am on weekends. The muffins are really good. There are about 8-10 varieties they bake, but they tend to have 3 or 4 that they bake a lot of, and then just a tray or two each of the less popular varieties. Their coffee is really, really HOT. McDonald's would never serve their coffee this hot! I also note that they tend to sell a lot of traditional breakfast fare - eggs, bacon and the like. I've never tried any of it, but if volume is an indicator of quality, it is probably pretty decent. I wouldn't say this is a charming place - not much atmosphere, the decor is non-existent, and when the place fills up on a weekend, it's anathema to peace seekers who want quiet with their coffee, muffin and Sunday newspaper. So, it's not Shangri-la, but I'm giving it an extra star to offset Rachel H's really stupid two star rating. Deal with it, Rachel - sometimes the proprietor runs out of product, and no, he's not going to bake a whole tray just for you, unless you intend to buy the whole tray. read more

This will be a short review: Sunday morning, Mother's Day, long line around 10:30 and the name of your shop is the MUFFIN shop. After waiting in line for almost 10 minutes, we get to the counter and you have ZERO muffins left. Um... your name is the MUFFIN shop! You should have muffins in abundance. Really bad business to run out mid-morning on a weekend! My boyfriend and I were hoping this would be similar to the Blueberry Muffin in North Conway, NH (which has absolutely delicious muffins) but alas there was no product to compare. I guarantee that the Blueberry Muffin wouldn't be out of muffins (ever) and especially not on such a popular day to go out to eat. Well I was on my way to Foodies when I saw a small sign that said "The Muffin Shop". I love muffins! I am going to try this place out. It was almost 1:00 in the afternoon and all the muffins were gone! They bake them fresh that morning and then they are first come first serve. The empty baskets had names that sounded just delightful, all kinds of varieties for every taste. If only I had come sooner! Well right as I was trying to figure out something else to buy a plump woman came out with a tray of cinnamon chip scones with vanilla drizzle all over them. They smelled and looked amazing. As I took the first bite, it literally melted in my mouth. What-a-scone! It was like having a cinnamon roll fresh out of the oven. The prices are great! I was very shocked my scone was only $1.50, especially in Marblehead! I am definitely going back soon. I have 20 different kinds of muffins to try! read more

We stopped in during the winter, to have some coffee. It wasn't too packed and the woman who I believe is the owner, was nice and helpful. They have a large array of pastries, and we settled on splitting a Hermit. Not a big muffin "Guy". It was good, and a good size, enough to split. They also have a lunch menu and local art on all walls, which is a cool addition to bring out the local small town feel. read more

Everything is amazing here!! Lobster roll was huge with tons of lobster for such a reasonable price. My kids devoured their sandwiches and the croissants were perfect. When they forgot one of my sandwiches, they made a fresh one and threw in a huge delicious cookie. Will definitely be back next time we are in town! read more

I had order for the first time lunch from this place on a Saturday afternoon, and I think it was the worst decision I've made. I had ordered with a few of my friends and the order came out wrong, a steak and cheese came to me filled with bacon cheese and mayo, not even hot but the fact of it being filled with bacon it was beyond me what the girl over the phone heard or even was paying attention in the first place. my friend had order a bacon burger with lettuce and mayo, the lettuce and mayo didn't even make it on to the sandwich. I was told by my friend she was given an attitude over the phone which cant disagree since its happen to me before. when I called to address the issue I was passed to the manager which sounded a bit stressed and I felt sorry for her. if you are an employee to work at the shop the least you could do is PAY ATTENTION TO THE ORDER OVER THE PHONE. the manager was apologetic and offered to make me another which I agreed, yet when I got it i was getting a whiff of tuna and mayo which is NOTHING CLOSE TO A STEAK AND CHEESE! I lost my appetite and only ate the bag of chips I got with the sandwich. I'll stick to my breakfast sandwiches and that's if I get that craving again. if I could recommend, do some updating and maybe cut some items off the menu just to not have a situation such as this happen again. hopefully they read the reviews! read more

Always packed for breakfast and lunch no matter what day of the week. The line to order can sometimes be a little tedious. As in a long line means an extra long wait. Is it worth it? I think so. We are regulars at the Muffin Shop. The Muffin Shop's lobster roll is the best in the area- hands down. For the price at $12.50- the quality (and quantity) can not be beat. I would pay more for this lobster roll (however, considering I enjoy a lobster roll once a week, I am thankful for the price.) The sandwiches are average and the burgers and hotdogs are very diner-like in quality. In my opinion, the only breakfast food worth eating are the muffins and croissants. I am not a coffee drinker but I notice many people indulging in coffee. For me, I like their organic tea selection. Also, they make smoothies- which look delish. I have not tried one as of yet. The owner and his wife are very friendly and very accommodating (especially when one has children..) Best Child-Friendly restaurant in town! A very laidback and clean establishment with a perfect view of the Old Town's busiest street...perfect for people watching! If you haven't tried the Muffin Shop, you should! read more

We are in town for a few weeks, was told this is a must try. Extremely empty when we arrived in the afternoon, maybe the pastries are the best part. I ordered the lobster roll. I think they use a mayonnaise base with it. Been eating lobster rolls all week, this was by far the most disappointing one I have had. I don't know if it was the mayo base that made me sick or what, however I would never recommend this place for a lobster roll. Many other places with delicious lobster rolls in the area. read more

Fourth of July is the busiest weekend in Marblehead. Everyone is hot and grumpy. We looked for a little respite in the Muffin Shop. I did not learn my lesson from a rubbery lobster roll last year. You will bump into tables, chairs and people on your way to the counter. None of the placement made sense. When you finally arrive at the cash register, young irritable girls will take your order. I was with my husband. I ordered one crab roll. Although the price on the board was $13, they charged me $15. I asked "why"? The response, "Split charge". A split charge in a bare bones Muffin Shop? I never said I was splitting the crab roll. I started to argue but, hell, I just wanted a bite to eat. Fine. The roll came whole. On a paper plate. No chips. Nothing. They didn't make the effort to cut it in half for the extra $1.50. Now I'm mad. Please cut it in half. For the love of heaven. The canned crab was watery and salty. Barely edible. I felt sick afterwards. I am a local. No one should be treated that way. Not even tourists on the 4th of July. Spend your dollars anywhere else. I went here with a group of 6 for a casual breakfast in Marblehead recently. The idea of this place is great - tiny breakfast joint in a quaint town with home-style breakfast goodies. While the food was decent when it finally came, there were so many disappointments along the way... First of all, the set-up of this place basically creates breakfast rage among its patrons. While waiting in line, one woman started yelling at us and others in line because she thought we were cutting in front of her. Although she was being rude, the main problem was that there is no clear path for a line, thus confusion abounded. When it was our turn to order, I was excited to check out the muffins considering this place is called the Muffin Shop. You probably have visions of cases and cases of colorful and delicious-looking muffins. What did we see? 1 muffin. Yep, one muffin at 10am. I understand they sell out, but it seemed really ridiculous that they were completely out at 10am. They said they were baking some in back, but to be out of all varieties seems like bad planning to my non-restauranteur brain. After ordering we all sat down and waited and waited and waited. Dishes came out sporadically, but several at our table weren't quite so lucky. After 3 trips back to the counter to see where the food was, it finally came out, about 45 minutes after we ordered. My mom always told me to say something nice about people, so I will end this review with a positive. The prices were super reasonable and fair, which is a definite pro. Unfortunately, good prices cannot fix the inefficiencies and bad planning. I hope this place can improve on its current system because this could be a great place for Marblehead. read more

Horrible customer service do not come here. Friend had baby dumb her sandwich that we waited 15min for and the teenager behind the counter said too bad you have to buy another....so after waiting another 20 minutes still no 2nd sandwich and when asked where it was the attitude filled teenager said well you dropped your sandwich 20 minutes ago we'll make ine now...took money back and went to foodies feast sooo much better! read more

I have had the muffins here...they ARE great...all varieties! We have a full house in summer, but there's always an early riser who drives over to get a dozen... Even summer weekends! If you want great muffins...stop complaining and just get up and get there EARLY! They open at 6am, so yes, by 9 or 10 in summer they're sold out...sometimes by 8 on summer weekends...but this is a small local place, not DD! Owners are very nice and customers are all ages...families and seniors. Very welcoming. By mid afternoon it's all over...so maybe the secret is a late muffinless lunch? PS it's 8am on a holiday weekend, and we just scored eight delicious blueberry muffins...and there are muffins left! read more

The dirtiest diner I've ever been in. First of all I would like to tell you that I ordered lobster roll from this diner. It came with a pickle which I put in my mouth and tasted something fuzzy and nasty. At which point I looked at the back side of the pickle and it was covered in fungus/mold. White mold. How can a pickle have mold is bizarre. I take it back to the counter which this young girl basically took it back without offering my money back or a new pickle. Although I was too sickened to eat anything else there after that. After that I looked around the place and the tables were dirty, floor was dirty with garbage and I really can't imagine what the kitchen is like. Its not a cheap place either. Recommend avoiding like the plague. Im lucky I Didn't get food poisoning. Its a tourist trap about they really should make more of an effort to keep the place clean and food without mold!!!! read more

In the interest of full transparency, the Muffin Shop is my spot. It is a 30 second walk from our apartment and on the days that I work from home, it's super convenient to pop in for a coffee and a breakfast sandwich. The owners are hardworking, lovely, and welcoming.Total old school, local breakfast joint vibe. The muffins are divine though you have to get there early because they go fast. Hot breakfasts or breakfast sandwiches (try the ham, egg, cheese and avocado on a plain croissant) are amazing. Definitely check it out if you find yourself in MHD for the summer or live here but haven't ventured there yet. read more

Take this review with a grain of salt, since we didn't even get around to trying the muffins here...but I have to say, The Muffin Shop was a great place to duck into on a chilly fall afternoon! If I was by myself instead of with my kids, I could have easily dawdled for hours over a cup of coffee and some wi-fi. Since we were so late in coming, though, all of the muffins had long since sold out and we had to be content with scones. They were excellent, and my kids really loved the ginormous cookies! Even on busy days they still manage to greet me and remember my usual order. I like the fact that the Muffin Shop isn't just one dimensional. It has more to offer than excellent muffins and coffees. The Muffin Shop is like nothing like it around. It is the 'Cheers' of the north shore. The food is outstanding and the atmosphere is alive. It is a great place to meet friends and meet up with friends. It is the cornerstone stop to eat in the historic area. Particularly great during the summer when you can eat outside but during the winter, it is a great place for families or to strike up a conversation. Yes it is generally full and often there are lines. There is a reason, it is worth it!! Where else in town do you see it and if it was a problem, there are at least 5 other places within 2 blocks. It is also true the muffins are usually gone by 10 am. I asked once. That start making the Muffins before 2 am but ultimately have to turn the kitchen over to breakfast and lunch. The people who really want muffins come early. I can't put in words effectively why so many people go there everyday and why visitors are willing to wait in long summer lines. It just has that 'home' feel that I know I have not found anywhere else after 22 years in Mass. If you just want to quickly shove average food in your mouth, there are other places to go. read more

I just love the Muffin Shop. It has such a warm and friendly atmosphere. The muffins are great but this place has so much to offer. Their breakfast sandwiches are amazing and their array of lunch options are sure to win you over (especially the delicious paninis). I have been coming into the Muffin Shop for years now and the environment always feels like a family. It is a place where friends meet and families gather. Truly a fantastic family restaurant. First time at the muffin shop about 2 weeks ago while visiting from out of town. I was recommended by a close friend to get breakfast here, and I'm glad I did! Wonderful small town vibe, with friendly, courteous, service. The food was fantastic (I'm a fairly picky eater), and well priced. I was a little embarrassed when I forgot to order my girlfriend a breakfast sandwich to go, and the young girl at the front desk was very accommodating and made it within minutes.
