I've been wanting to try Cassava for years. I missed out when I lived in the Richmond District…read morewhen they were on Balboa. I missed them in North Beach as I was passing by to do time sensitive errands and there was no line miraculously. Finally I got to try them when I just happened to be near Jackson Square, where they are now located. First off, what a beautiful space! I don't know much about architecture, but I'm a sucker for exposed brick. It feels like an oasis in the middle of downtown. The host asked if I was dining with them, which I said yes. And the I couldn't quite understand her next question, partially my fault. It was Star Wars Day and the background music was from one of the episodes. Not as epic as the Duel of Fates, which I rate a 10, but I'd rate the music playing at around a 6 for intensity. So my ears were tuned to that. Turns out she was asking if I wanted a table, which confused me because I had stated I would be dining there. The next set of patrons also had the same exchange. After some thought, I realize that she must get a lot of questions as they're in the epicenter of the building. There's businesses all around, so the must get a lot of questions for directions. And I'm detailing this because I have a bit of social anxiety and appreciate details like this in other reviews, as a way to mentally prepare myself. But this doesn't affect my rating. The hostess was really nice. I got the egg salad sando, which came with a potato salad. I wasn't expecting the traditional Japanese sando, and I think that helps going in. This sando was more herbaceous from the chives. It also has more texture from the crunchy lettuce. The bread itself was soft, but still had structure. My only wish is that the eggs were creamier. I wanted the kewpie mayo to have more of a presence. But overall it was a good sandwich. And I really enjoyed the potato and cauliflower side. The potatoes were soft and the cauliflower had a good bite. And the bright acidity balanced the richness of the egg. I paired it with an earl grey tea, which was also good. I really want to go back and have a nice cup of coffee and a pastry, and to enjoy the space. They even have blankets as I'm sure it gets chilly. But bring something warm to wear anyway.

I normally don't love hainanese chicken (their cold chicken small bite) but there's is fire. DO NOT SLEEP ON THE JELLFYFISH WITH HOT MUSTARD. Or the escargot for that matter. Dip that milk bread in that buttery garlic chili oil goodness. I'm literally getting hungry writing this as we speak. Everyone was so friendly, Jane was super helpful and nice when we asked questions about menu items. Wish I caught everyone else's name too, very welcoming spot. Heads up; not a huge spot, so I wouldn't recommend for a group bigger than 4. Come here, it's a must! Definitely grab a Rez if you can.

Long overdue review! I've been here twice now, and both visits were excellent. The escargot with…read morethe milk buns is an absolute must order. I honestly think it's the best in town. The steak arrives on a sizzling plate and is packed with flavor. The complimentary salted nuts are also delicious and something I always look forward to. The squab wasn't really my favorite, and I found the clay pot dish to be mediocre and not particularly memorable. Service was fast and attentive during both visits. My only minor complaint is that the space is quite small, but it also adds to the cozy, intimate atmosphere, making it a great spot for a date nights.

This was our view from the bar and it served as the backdrop to our entire dining experience. We had been wanting to visit this restaurant for quite some time, and after finally making it in, we left wondering why we had waited so long. Everything on the menu sounded really appetizing, which made it difficult to narrow it down and choose. Thankfully, to help first timers like us, the Tasting Menu offered a curated selection of items from each section on the menu. First things first... the cocktails. I ordered a Fhloston Paradise, a perfect blend of kõ hana agricole rum, coconut liqueur, falernum, lime and absinthe; just enough sweetness for my palate. It was appreciated with every sip, but went down more smoothly than expected and I was already eyeing my next drink. Having a husband that loves watching me enjoy life was the first to suggest another drink. Sitting at the bar (our favorite place to sit btw), was the second encourager as the drinks were made right in front of me. One caught my eye... BUT... it was a mocktail. Not a worry in my mind as I asked our wonderful bartender if he could make it an "un-mocktail". So... the "Bittersweet Life" turned into a rum filled "Sweet Life"! He painstakingly made every effort to make sure my drink came out perfect, exactly how I like it... sweet. Bravo to your attention to detail! One word to describe our dining experience here is "fragrant". From the aromatic bouquet of the cocktails to the enticing scents rising from each beautifully plated dish, every course engaged the senses before the first sip or bite was even taken. Our Tasting Menu included these items: *Tuna poke *Caviar Taro Puff *Duck Liver Mousse *Pig Head Croquette *Halibut Sashimi *Gulf shrimp *Local black cod *Daikon cake (not on the printed menu) *American Wagyu Zabuton *Sesame cracker (not on the menu) *Baked Hawaii (not on the menu) We enjoyed our evening so much that we're already looking forward to returning. With so many enticing dishes still left to explore, this certainly won't be our last visit.
