The salmon is cooked and seasoned perfectly every time (always medium, never over-cooked like how so many of the other healthy restaurants serve it). The cabbage slaw, marinated beets, tomato and cucumbers and radish offer a ton of delicious, tangy fiber, all over perfectly cooked rice. Sumac has quickly become my go-to delivery option. Y'all. It's SO GOOD. There's a low floor and high ceiling for Mediterranean food, in my opinion. Getting to that ceiling takes some differentiation, and Sumac does that through offering fantastic basics, unique combinations, quality and flavor across the board, and (for delivery) fantastic packaging. For the fantastic basics, like, guys. You just can't go wrong. Chicken, flavorful, not dry. Meatballs, tender. Falafel, crispy, dense, not greasy. Red lentil ball, so interesting, yummy, refreshing. Their mezze, which I need to have more of, tasty and clearly made well. Their wraps, specifically the house-made lavash? You aren't getting better lavash. I trust that no matter what I order, the key components are gonna hit. For unique combinations, have y'all had their soups?!! The soups are game-changing. And also, they deliver well which is very impressive, but anyway, let's talk about them. The red lentil soup that's blended with potato and lemon???!!! They aren't playing. The beef bone marrow soup is just... I could eat that every day. These two soups, I would highly recommend. But also!! You can't go wrong with their chicken soup! And their chard and barley soup is made from a yogurt base, so it's got a weightiness and tang. So interesting and really cool. And all soups come with bread!! They have cool combos outside of their soups. Like, for example, the baseline falafel bowl has muhammara rather than the usual hummus. Smart, interesting. I just really love those soups :) Everything I've gotten from Sumac is so fresh and high-quality. I always feel full and not sluggish. They are very good on portion sizing too. Greasy, Salty, and Nothing Like It Used to Be!! I've been a big fan of Sumac since it first opened. During COVID, I used to order a few times a week and recommended it to many friends and coworkers. I tried every dish and especially loved the grandma's banana bread pudding. It was a great, healthy delivery option during busy times and one of my go-to places whenever I craved Muhammara and lentil balls. Today, I decided to order ahead and pick up on my way home. I placed an order for a side of okra for myself, the beef and eggplant stew for my boyfriend, and two jars of chicken and beef broth for next week's dinners. Unfortunately, this will be the last time I order from Sumac, the quality just isn't there anymore. When I arrived, I realized my online order hadn't gone through because the beef bone broth was no longer available. Since the order didn't process, I ended up ordering directly from the window and got my food 10-15 minutes later. The side of okra was disappointing, I only received three pieces of okra. The container was mostly filled with tomatoes and fried potatoes, and everything was extremely greasy. It seemed like the tomatoes and potatoes were grilled on the same surface used for burgers. The eggplant and beef stew was basically just a beef stew with the same greasy tomatoes and potatoes side order okra had. It was extremely salty and oily--to the point where it was unpleasant to eat. I had two jars of chicken broth instead of chicken and beef. Maybe they were out, but when I asked, the person said they did have beef broth. This wasn't the first disappointing experience either. Two months ago, we ordered the salmon wraps, and they were a mess. The salmon wasn't crispy or prepared in a way that worked for a wrap--it ended up soggy, lacking balance, and missing ingredients like arugula or cucumber. Earlier this year, I ordered the lentil bowl, and the lentil balls weren't the same as they used to be--the whole bowl was overly greasy. read more

The chicken was thigh meat, seasoned well and plentiful, not to mention well-dressed (no gristle anywhere!!) Don't sleep on the spicy sauce -- its peppery hot and adds excitement to the whole situation. Albeit a little pricey to have this delivered to me, it was enough food to feed me for 2 meals and was one of the best lunches I've had at work in a while. I got the half&half chicken bowl that came with choice of side (I got roasted veggies), and choice of sauce, along with pickled beets and red cabbage. I got the sumac lebneh hot sauce on the side, but truthfully, I was enjoying the food so much on its own that I forgot to use it until later in the meal. This was a bit of a whirlwind experience with us not being familiar with the ins & outs of SF, so I'll get right into it.. Ambiance - This is probably the biggest shock for us. While doing research on finding dinner options, we came across Sumac and loved the photos of the food we saw along with the menu options. Our plan was to go there for a nice meal and then go to a comedy show afterwards. Little did we know, this is not a restaurant you can dine in. It's essentially a working kitchen where you pick up food to eat elsewhere. Had we known this, we probably wouldn't have selected this place as it was raining pretty heavily on the evening we decided to check it out. Food - The food here was fantastic. I can see why this place receives glowing reviews. I had a meatball rice bowl while my wife had a chicken rice bowl. Both came with hot sauce and a couple of colorful sauces (one pink and one green) and both sauces were delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals, but again not knowing that you couldn't eat there we didn't get to eat it until we got back to our hotel which was a 15-minute ride so it wasn't as fresh as we were expecting. Service - There's not really much to say about service since it's basically a working kitchen, but the guy who took our order was very nice so no problems here. Overall, I think this is a wonderful place especially if you live nearby. They had a couple of other restaurants operating out of that same kitchen as well, so look them up and see what tasty options they have available. I think the only improvement may be to let outsiders of SF know that you cannot dine here. Maybe they do and we missed it, but I think getting that message out may help others avoid the same fate as ours. We have no regrets over the food, we were just hoping for a slightly different experience but chose to make the best of it. Love the simple menu at this place - there are only a few items but they all sounds so good. It's more of a ghost kitchen (no seating), so expect to take it to-go. I tried the chicken bowl, red lentil wrap, and banana cream pudding. My favorite was the chicken bowl. The chicken was seasoned perfectly and I loved the roasted veggies that came with it - felt super light and healthy. I also loved the red lentil wrap - the red lentils had a sweet legume flavor which I liked. I'd recommend getting the bowl over the wrap because it has more veggies and food! But both are good. I ordered a chicken salad which came with grilled chicken (obvi), pickled beets, pickled onions, and roasted vegetables atop a bed of baby spinach. The portions were HUGE, and they did not skimp out on the meat. Upon opening the box, the overwhelming smell of dill invaded the room, and I was afraid dill would overpower the other flavors in the salad. But, I was pleasantly proved wrong! The chicken was so flavorful, slightly smoky, and incredibly spiced. The pickled vegetables against the roast zucchini was an amazing flavor balance, and overall, the salad was a perfect symphony of savory and tangy. I didn't even need dressing! THAT's how good it was. Extra props for the service! The chicken salad was taped down which was great as the contents inside the box were secure throughout the delivery process. As a fan of Oren's Hummus Shop in the bay area, I kind of figured I wouldn't find anything comparable in the SF area after my mother moved nearby to Sumac. Thankfully it's a swing and a hit! The falafel was delicious and so was the hummus. Very fresh tasting and not at all as heavy or harsh on my stomach as Oren's. I'm curious to try whatever else they serve. I was partial to Oren's beef but I'll at the very least come back for the falafel + hummus. The meat was tender and not dry at all which tends to be a problem with to-go orders. It was fresh and the tahini/hot sauce paired well with it. I would go check out Sumac in person! My only con is that the portion of meat to rice/chickpea ratio was on the smaller side. There was plenty of rice and chickpea and slightly smaller portion of meatballs. Sumac is my favorite local salad/bowl shop. Luckily, it's walking distance for me, and so are some of the best Italian bakeries in town, so I'm grateful for its proximity as it does help me make a smart, healthy choice now and again. My partner and I typically order one bowl and one salad and share them both for a few meals. We can usually get 4-6 meals out of our order and love the lentil balls. Everything has been fantastic. The flavors really delivered too. We got the chicken bowl, red lentil bowl (which I was skeptical about, but wow! So delicious), and the falafel bowl. All were very good, and we shared them for a wonderful, healthy feast. I had heard of muhamarra, but hadn't tried it before. It's like an extra tasty hummus, and it came with the falafel bowl. Up a big hill, no matter where you approach from. Fast casual counter service looking, but now takeout only. Not many Turkish options around here, so a nice way to mix up your takeout regimen. Red Lentil Balls Wrap: This was a real sleeper hit. I kinda expected it be like some variant of falafels. Instead, it was so much better. The lentil balls were more like homemade lentil burgers that got smooshed into a partially firm partially pasty texture. In the center of the wrap was some greenery, which paired nicely against the more dense lentils. Butcher's Kofte-Meatball Rice Bowl: I was looking forward to some kofte, but this was a tad disappointing. Didn't have that burger-like just off the grill texture. Was more like squeaky Italian meatballs that uses a good amount of filler. The flavors were nice though, even the texture was a bit off. I also like all the chickpeas against the rice. Cacik: Like tzatziki, but a lot thicker and creamier. A really large portion, compared to the measly amount of pita provided. I was in the area and I tried this restaurant out. I ended up ordering the red lentil balls bowl to go. It only took about five minutes to come out and by the time I ended up walking to my car I was hungry the food was still warm, and I loved every bit of it. The ingredients were fresh and delicious. The sauce was also great. It went well with the entrée. Overall great experience great food I just wish there was a small table at least to sit outside because when I was waiting for my food, I had a stand. Sumac is offering some of the freshest, healthiest, & tastiest fare in Russian Hill. I started with tzatziki & pita. Of course I had to add tabouleh. And the red lentil salad was my choice for entree. First off, delivery presentation is on point. Really well done, nothing sloppy here. Secondly, I couldn't get over how fresh everything was. The tabouleh was so green & robust, it looked surreal. It's as though they grow everything in their backyard, & make it to order. The red lentil balls might have a less than intriguing name, but they shouldn't be missed. I certainly am no vegetarian, and I didn't miss meat at all. They're dense & very filling.
