We were part of the wine tasting trail tour and our group learned nothing much about the wines as the guy poured, said something quick and was off to take care of others. Also I had to ask for a bucket to toss some wine......I hate to do it, but if need be, then let me do it without a comment from the server. There were no snacks either. A hip tasting room and gift shop, it's located amongst a row of ice cream shops, boutique clothing stores, book stores and art galleries. Another maker of old world wines, they practice organic wine making and even consider some of their wines vegan. I guess winemakers employ the use of animal product in the making of their wines, who knew. It's a great place to stop in after walking the street and enjoying the historic shopping district. Biodynamic + organic wines! They have two tastings you can try, a $10 flight that has whites and a $15 that is mostly reds. Not everything is a gem but everything is generally very tasty. We really enjoyed their unfiltered Grenache which is cloudy and interesting in the glass and fresh and fruity in your mouth. I don't remember the whites at all - but I did love the Arts and Crafts bottling - an elegant merlot + cab sauv, which you can enjoy at the Farmer and the Cook in nearby Meiner Oaks. Tasting room staff was friendly - but by staff, I mean one slightly-overworked guy who had to contend with a tour group of 21 people who arrived while we were tasting. (Yikes, I hate those wine caravan people.) We would definitely return for future tastings even if we didn't fall head over heels in love with any single bottle. read more

Took a short daytrip to Ojai on a hot summer day and was rescued by the cool atmosphere of Casa Barranca. Super reasonably priced tasting (even better with a Yelp check-in) and friendly staff. I don't know too much about wine but was able to ask a few "dumb" questions without actually feeling dumb, which is always nice. I was so happy when I discovered Casa Barranca Wine. Absolutely delicious. Love the organic wine and am able to drink both white and red now. I used to get a headache with red. The wine tasting room is friendly and cozy. The owners to the tasting room hostess & manager are wonderful and I am always greeted when in town like an old dear friend. My boyfriend and I did not have a good experience at Casa Barranca on a nice Sunday afternoon in Ojai. When we first walked in, we were greeted by a Maltese who was standing on the bar. Obviously not a good first impression to a wine bar. The wine tender was pouring little to no tastings in our glasses, and as we were tasting our last glass, a woman came in who clearly knew the wine tender and she poured her a generous glass of rose in exchange for food from Ojai harvest. The rose was not offered on the menu whatsoever and when we asked if we could taste that glass of rose before buying a bottle, she declined. Also throughout the wine tasting, she reached under the bar and pulled out various snacks including pretzels in ziplock bags that looked like it came from home that she only offered to the man sitting next to us. When she finally rung us up, there was tax included in the price. As an avid wine taster, I have never once been taxed on a wine tasting. Prior to this experience, my boyfriend and I had a lovely and wonderful experience at majestic oak winery across the street. We would not recommend casa barranca at all! Definitely visit majestic oak where you will receive quality service and no puppies standing on the bar. read more

This is an awesome tasting room tucked into the arcade area of downtown Ojai. Their wines are all organic and sulfate-free and very smooth. Well, my wife and I are never coming back here, period. We decided to sample each of Casa Barranca's tasting menus on our visit. The wine pourer looked and acted as if he was the owner but I wasn't sure if actually was the owner. He was friendly enough at the beginning when he started pouring our tastings. His pours were huge, like a quarter of glass, and as I began to sample, I would take a few sips and then dump the rest in the bucket sitting right in front of me. I figured...the pours are big and the wine wasn't great, so why would I want to get drunk on this stuff? So on the second pour, I took a few sips and then dumped my wine. The guy catches me and then makes a crack about how I just dumped out their most expensive wine. He's never seen anyone do that. Then he proceeds to inform the other customers of my actions. But the thing is, he sounded really offended. He took it super seriously. Sorry dude...just trying to be a responsible wine taster. So then, he re-adjusts his pours which was fine but continues periodically to jibe me about throwing out his most expensive wine. He basically stopped talking to us after that. That is my biggest gripe...making customers feel bad for throwing out their wine. Don't do tastings then. Don't leave a dump bucket out. Don't pour a quarter of a glass per tasting. Never mind the other negatives: extra attitude (he was acting a bit too cool for school), didn't seem to care about telling us anything about the wines we sampled, other customers asked basic questions about the vineyard but he never answered them or only answered them while texting away on his phone. I don't know...all in all a terrible and bizarre experience. read more

Picture this: Date night, one of maybe 6 you get in a year, being parents of young children. Your brother, who lives across the country and you see once a year, buys you a $50 gift certificate for a tasting at this place. You visiting your Grandmother, 95, whose husband was the mayor of Ojai. You get dressed up, hire a sitter, and go to this place. The insolent 20-something behind the counter accuses you of forging the gift certificate to said place, on New Year's eve. I don't care if the wine is good - the energy are unforgivable. I went in to the tasting room in downtown ojai with some friends of mine, and I was looking for some great organic wine for my sisters birthday, and I was pleasantly surprised by many things. First of all, the atmosphere and ambiance was great, it was a very clean place, and I was greeted by the bartender I believe his name was "ricky". He made me feel at home and he made me feel comfortable, not too pushy, very friendly, charismatic, and energetic. He was very knowledgeable about the wine he was pouring, and I must say he made our tasting and overall experience there absolutely perfect. I would recommend casa barranca wine to everyone, and the tasting room as well was a first class experience. My wife and I flew into LA for a few days from Canada to get away. We met a group of really cool people in Venice and started talking about where to go to taste some great wines that were organic and quality all around. Our new friend Alexis suggested we go to Casa Barranca tasting room in Ojai. We had never heard of this little town and when we got there, it was charming and peaceful and a wonderful change of pace compared to most cities we have lived in and visited. We went in on Saturday and it was packed, good music, cool people and an overall awesome time. We were quickly greeted by the guy behind the bar who ended up being RickyV. He was very attentive and helpful and offered that we try both flights of wines so we could get the full experience. There was not a wine that we did not like!! Organic, unfiltered wines that were made on the Casa Estate, but grapes purchased from some of the best vineyards up in Santa Barbara County and Central Coast. Every wine had so much taste and flavor and different personalities. Not only were we entertained by RickyV., but we learned a lot from him about the wines and the concept of growing organically versus conventionally and we ended up meeting a lot of really cool people, had a blast and needless to say, ended up leaving with a case of wine!! A somewhat dispiriting experience. The server was nice, but distant. The wines were unremarkable. The owner/proprietor was holding court at the other end of the bar. The wine bar closed while we were there and more of the owner's friends started to arrive. It was a very exclusive clubby atmosphere and we weren't part of it.
