    Chilaquiles
    Lauren J.

This restaurant is conveniently located in the lobby of the Marriott, right next to the Mechanics Bank Arena. We had about an hour and a half to wait between events at the arena. It was raining outside and we didn't want to walk anywhere, so we decided to eat here. We were seated right away and ordered shortly after. And then the wait began. At first we were like it's cool, we have plenty of time. After 30 minutes we got nervous, and after 45 panic set in. We finally got our food after close to an hour wait. And for the record, it was not busy. In fact, we were one of the last people left in the restaurant at this point. The food was average. Like cafeteria quality. It was ok. I got Chilaquiles which comes with eggs. Our server had asked how I wanted my eggs. I said over hard, and specified please not runny. Well it was like pure liquid. I know some people love that. I'm not one of those people, which is why I asked specifically to make sure they were not runny. When it came time to pay, we presented our Yelp check-in offer. Our server went and got a manager. The manager looked at it and said what is this? I explained. She said "ya we don't do that. The only time you get a discount here is if you work for Marriott." Okie dokie then. So I'm not a fan, but I would go back given similar circumstances. I now know to have low expectations. Pricey food that is edible.

Fried calamari and cocktail sauce. Surprisingly good.

This restaurant is a solid three star experience. Turkey club. I always ask, "Is the turkey carved fresh roast turkey or is it luncheon meat?" I absolutely abhor luncheon meat turkey. The waiter said it is definitely fresh carved turkey. I was excited. It was not. The turkey was that really wet off-white luncheon meat. The fries. I always request my fries extra crispy, and these were fantastic. They were fresh cooked, and salted to perfection. The fried calamari. I was surprised that the fried calamari actually seemed pretty fresh. It was not frozen Costco calamari that was reheated. The service was very friendly, although misinformed. The highlight of the meal was definitely the fries in the calamari. If I'd stop there this would have been a solid four-star review.

I really enjoyed my salad! I had the red zin as well, which was okay. The salad was such a large quantity, but I did spend some time sitting at the restaurant while working- so I picked at it quite a bit. The staff was also very attentive and helpful. And as I mentioned, I was working, and no one minded. It was pretty empty, but I'm not sure how many folks who are not staying at the hotel would go to the restaurant. But the entrance display was really nice, and was very accessible and available to the guests.

We attended a Cheer competition for our daughter at the Mechanics Bank Arena and were hungry in between our club's performances. We were going to walk somewhere downtown but the weather was not in our favor so we ended up here. When you first enter the greeting area looks somewhat upscale leading you to believe that this was going to be a really good spot. There were only a few booths and mainly tables and chairs. The server seemed frustrated that we had not decided what we wanted to eat when she returned with our drinks. Being our first time we were taking our time going through the menu which was fairly small but none the less we were trying to make the best choice. They had a buffet option which we looked at and looked like less than what you would get from a Hilton hotel for free. I ended up choosing the Benedict. It took quite some time to get our food and did not get refills on our drinks while waiting. When the food finally arrived I was disappointed in the quality and flavor, to top it off they stated the coupon in Yelp was only for employees?!?!? I'm pretty sure Yelp is not randomly making coupons with out consulting with the businesses first. Don't think we will be coming back here anytime soon.

Usual Marriott lobby restaurant setting. My server was very nice and attentive. Unfortunately, my Parmesan chicken dish was extremely salty, and the chicken breast, although a nice portion, was quite tough. There was a lemon caper sauce the entire dish was resting on, which was way too lemony. So between the caper's salt and the lemon overload, it was not a pleasant dish. There was supposed to be arugula on the side, but those wilted green things were them! The rolls that were brought were little dense doughballs with no flavor. If I stay here at the Marriott again, I'll be ordering Doordash in. (One additional star for the server)

Typical Marriott breakfast, good for a nice morning breakfast and portions are filling. Good service considering how busy it was at 8:00am. Starbucks is also served here which is life changing (if you know me). Overall a good place for a bite when starting at Marriott.

Good food and great service! I had chicken Cajun pasta because it was recommended . It was fragrant and tasty. The complimentary rolls were a great combo with the pasta. Our server Josh did a fantastic job at attending us. He was polite and the service was fast!

One of the most depressing dishes I have ever eaten .

I was so very super excited about having the opportunity to eat here, after going through many of the reviews and researching a great place to eat in Bakersfield ,this seemed like a very good option. The Host & Waitress were gracious kind and my water glass was never empty. I was absolutely starving and usually when I am at such a point everything tastes delicious. I asked the waitress for the largest plate available I didn't even ask the cost or look at the menu , she said it was chicken something and I said I'll have it. The plate was just okay, it was very salty and the chicken breast was super thin and The mashed potatoes tasted like they were from a Ready-Mix, I would give it a 4/10 I had very hi-hopes and was let down. (this was for dinner Service ) I also had the opportunity to have Breakfast Buffet here. The breakfast tasted like cafeteria food , bacon was over-cooked, the only good thing was the orange juice and Activia, the bagel warming machine was off kilter, the potatoes were cold, it was very disappointing. But the Morning Waitress was Fantastic and totally on point , that's why I gave it an extra star.

The first time we ate here, the service was incredibly slow, but we ordered Cioppino and it was really good. The broth was a good consistency and very flavorful. They were not stingy with the fish either! On our most recent visit, the service was better although it did take some time to get our food. We ordered the artichoke dip and I loved it. So did everyone else at the table because the bowl it came in got scraped clean! I got the Skirt Steak beef dip and found it delectable. It had a good strong garlic flavor and was very expertly complimented by grilled portabello mushrooms and swiss cheese. I also really appreciated the toasted ciabatta bread on this sandwich because it was able to be dipped in the au jus without falling apart. I enjoyed the mild seasoning on the fries as well. The cocktails on the menu looked really really good and I hope to try one next time!

The nines Brown lettuce Caesar. The dressing was tasty but the lettuce was old. Croutons were old too.

NY steak was amazingly tender and cooked perfectly, the kind of steak that really does not need much done to it because the flavor already speaks for itself. They served it with chimichurri sauce, which just was not exactly my cup of tea, but once I added Worcestershire sauce, it really brought out the flavor of an already all-star steak. The Chicken Fried Steak 'n' Eggs with hash browns was also very tasty Steak even the batter had flavor and definitely worth it. The chicken fried steak had that good comfort food quality to it, with a crispy outside, tender bite, and a savory flavor that worked really well with the eggs. The hash browns helped round everything out nicely and even the biscuits and gravy which im generally not a fan of was very good. Service from Holly, and I hope I got that right, was amazing from start to finish. She was friendly, attentive, and made the visit feel easy and comfortable. Even the iced tea stood out to me because it tasted like the homemade sun tea I make every year by the pool, and that gave the whole meal an extra familiar touch. Overall, this was a very strong visit with a standout steak, a satisfying breakfast plate, and excellent service.

The steak was thin so it pretty much was all well done apart from the center being slightly pink. Such a disappointment. Country fried steak was one of the worst I've ever had, super dry, could have done with more gravy. Ordered drinks with less ice, glass came full of ice like an ordinary amount but went the wrong table at first. The restaurant was dirty. Needs sweeping as there was dirty tissue under our table before we entered but instead staff are cleaning the glass panels between the tables that aren't as dirty as the obvious tissues on the floor. Are they hoping the decor draws eyes up away from the dirty floor? 2 stars for the retro decor.

The food was good. The tri tip and chicken fried steak were full of flavor and seasoned well. The only negative we would say about the food is the tri tip was a little on the dry side, and the chicken fried steak was mostly batter. Both still tasted good, though. Just wished the tri tip was juicier and chicken fried steak was proportioned better with meat vs batter. Sides were really good (descriptions in the pics). Food was 4 stars. Atmosphere is very old school feel. They even had the Price Is Right from probably the 70's or 80's playing on the tv. Brought back funny memories. Overall, recommend. Very good local restaurant.

The rib was probably the best of the meats. The trip was okay. The food is buffet food so I don't have really high expectations. For a traditional family style buffet I would give the a 3.5 on the food. They had a great selection on salads made in house. The meat guy recommended the broccoli salad and I tried it. It was pretty good. It's been at least 15 years since I've had broccoli salad. That did not disappoint. My wife liked the good variety and selection, and the fried chicken was pretty good. My son liked the apple cobbler and their homemade peanut butter cookies. The service was exceptional. Everyone working there was pleasant and friendly. 5 of 5 for service. The atmosphere, the design and theme was very appropriate, although dated it is still very welcoming and appropriate for the venue. With that being said, the carpet was filthy and the upholstery was warn and old. It looks dated and tired. They can keep the overall theme and look, but give the restaurant an updated facelift of sorts. The seasonal decorations were nice. The store gift shop sold miscellaneous items including some of their baked goods, so that was cool. The lighting needs to be updated. That would really enhance their atmosphere. The bathrooms. You can learn a lot about a place from the bathroom. These weren't filthy per se but the floors were pretty nasty. It always grosses me out when my shoes stick to the tiles. The fixtures were on par with a lot of the restaurant, old, dated, and tired. Formica countertops? A lot of these design elements just need to be polished up. I think this is a great part of the Bakersfield community, but I think it's been a bit neglected. It's probably family owned for a while and the kids or whatever have gotten complacent with the business. I'm not saying it is poorly ran and the positive experience with their staff can attest to that. But they can use some freshening up. Tip to owner, I didn't see any take out happening during my visit but in today's food retail market, take out is HUGE! Especially with the Holiday season and football games etc. I have a feeling you are missing out on some of your local market. Reach out if you want a more detailed discussion. Bakersfield is poised to grow and i hope that you are poised to grow as a local business as well. I'm glad we stopped by on our way back to Sacramento.
