I love dive bars but I don't like this place. Pretty sure I got charged for a drink with zero alcohol in it. People are off putting. It's strange to be shunned as a nonregular by a bunch of people who probably get shunned in their lives. Nothing like becoming the thing you hate! I want to preface this with two things: I am a real Human Being, and I'm going for word count here. I moved to Denver nearly a year ago. I ended up moving close by, behind the Basilica, and working in Central-Downtown Denver. I quickly became a regular, a partitioner of Good Dive Bars, and this one excellently qualifies. Their karaoke night is an absolute banger. Every regular, and every bartender, treats you for comfort and respect. This bar is one of the only places I feel safe to socialize, to be able to walk away from my backpack and my purse, and Know that it'll be the same as when I went outside to smoke. When I'm feeling alone, I know I can go to Nob, and even if I didn't talk to anyone, I got to a part of the community. Despite being pushed away quite loudly, the bartender did nothing to intervene, ask what was going on, or show the slightest bit of concern. Was looking for a fun little dive bar to take my friend for her birthday on a Friday night. My friends husband had recently passed away and just wanted to enjoy some drinks to brighten her day. When we walked in, we could tell the bartender was in a bad mood. Took her almost 5 minutes to recognize we were sitting at the bar. After watching her yell at another customer for drinking to much (and she served this person?), she asked us what we wanted. I was then reluctant to order anything at this point, but we did. After listening to her tell another couple that Friday nights were basically for the gay community, we decided to leave. We also highly support and have many friends in the gay community, but for her to make us feel unwelcome because we are not gay was all we could stand. I like Nob Hill, but only for certain times. It is a DIVE bar, and if that is what you are going for, it is great. Depending on who is running the juke box, it can have some great throw-back music and usually has an all around good vibe. The new automated darts board is pretty fun... I enjoyed the fact that even though my dart bounced off, it counted! (I guess if you are an experienced and serious darts player though, this might not be a good thing...) Friendly bartenders, cheap drinks, fun dive vibe. Great spot... if you are there with a smaller group. I hate going there with a big group because the physical layout of the space is hard to chat with a bunch of people at once and you inevitably end up getting split among the room and in different booths. The epicenter of crazy on Colfax and my favorite bar in town. The Nob is simply a bar, lacking in all pretension and fanfare. The crowd is interesting, the art terrible, the alcohol affordable and the overall experience variable, but I always enjoy it. I did enjoy it more before they replaced one of the most interesting jukeboxes in town with a typical digital piece of shit. This is unfortunate and it stings every time I walk in and hear Kid Rock or Toto's Africa for the thousandth time, but it won't stop me from coming. Enjoy your beer and tip well. read more

Upon visiting a town I've never been to before, I have a habit of going to the diviest bar in the city on the first night. Denver was no exception. My friend and I stood in front of the bar for a few minutes, debating on whether we should go in or not. Some patrons inside the bar saw us and said "Come on in!" That made us nervous, but there were some really shady charcters milling around on the street who tended to walk a little too close to us, so we decided that inside the bar was safer than outside of the bar. Not sure if we made the best call. Most people in the bar were men who looked like they haven't had the easiest lives. We decided to stay for one drink due to concerns about safety (or lack thereof). This old guy (who we later found out is named "Harry") sauntered in about 30 seconds after we did, and started talking to one of the employees. They were speaking to each other quietly for a minute or two when we heard the employee say "Harry, I told you not to look at them directly, look at them in the mirrors!" (on the wall). I knew we were in for a treat at that point. Harry (who kept winking at us and doing a lot of lip-licking) sat next to us and bought us drinks, and the bartender (who was nice) gave us some shots. When we left, the bartender gave me a $2 bill with "Nob Hill Denver" scribbled across it. Said it was a "tradition". Another employee said that we should come by at last call and they would "hook us up". Between the $2 bill and the drinks bought for us, we pretty much got paid to drink there. Everyone was actually really friendly and respectful, but I'll admit that my friend and I were a little on edge the whole time, but I think the threat of danger added to the fun! Hey there, so you said that you want to go to a DIVE BAR? Look no further than Nob Hill Inn (or the Nobbers, as I like to call it). Quaint and dark and magical. The crowd that comes in is worth the price of a drink (or many drinks) alone. Eclectic Colfax folks that like to keep things funky and stimulating. The staff is great, as they know how to handle the drunkards and people that they just don't want to deal with. They serve cheap drinks that are strong. That's usually my jam, so I like coming in here every once in a while. My favorite part of the place is the old school cash register on the counter. The new-ish electronic dart board is a lot of fun. You have to ask the bartender for the darts, and a lot of the tips are broken. When you throw, make sure it hits and keeps track of your score. I've known some cheaters who try to use this system to their advantage. Not in my house, buddy! You have to take a look at the creepy clown art that is around the bar. It may give you the heebie jeebies, but embrace it. You are in Nob Hill (affectionately Nobbers). It helps accentuate the murky lights and mucky smells. You want a dive? You found it. read more

Its an even better sign when the place is filled with friendly people who are enjoying company of each other in good conversation. When the old guy sitting next to you at the bar offers to buy you a drink, just say no. Shots of Smirnoff on an empty stomach are not a great idea. When staring out the window, and you see two fine local Colfax women fighting in the middle of the intersection, and one steals the others cane.....don't get in the middle of it. They will sort it out on their own. When a woman waves at you from one end of the bar, and then approaches you on your end, calls you Doug, and claims that she's met you before....just go with it. Its for the best. When you wake up at 6am, with no pants on, and wonder how you got home into your bed and are amazed that you don't have a hangover...take it from me, you are still drunk. She assured me that "Sadie" only has a little and only while at the bar. I dared not bring up anything along the lines of animal cruelty because I'm sure I too would have been thrown out and then had my ass kicked. It still got better when a couple came in pushing a baby stroller...YES THEY BROUGHT A BABY INTO THE BAR!!!! While the husband settled into one of the old school red leather booths, the wife ordered two beers at the bar. Sometimes you need to check in on the mother of all Denver dives, and that means having a couple at the Nob. None of those fancy soda guns here. They mix your cocktail poured from a liter sized bottle. And the bartender is likely drunk enough to splash on you while he does. At least that was our experience during a recent drop in. The juke was screaming Motown, which is never a bad thing in my book. But I've also been in there and heard nothing but bad country. Still, I've also heard good country in there. How many times have you been driving down Colfax and noticed a seedy-looking business and wondered "is that place even open?" For several years, the Nob Hill has occupied that spot in my mind. Due to it's location, I'd always imagined that this was where Denver's finest alcoholics came to both start and end the day with quarters and dimes carefully plucked from nearby sidewalks. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the true beauty of the Nob Hill several weeks ago with a big group of friends. It was a friends' 30th birthday party, and we were getting close to last call. We decided to try the Nob Hill. Walked in and it was like walking back in time to early 1960's Colfax. Same original decor, Chuck Berry on the jukebox, mirrored walls and cheap, stiff drinks. A strange crowd -- definitely a few veteran alcoholics, but no one being too creepy. The bartender was cordial and friendly and even let us stay a few minutes late after our limo abandoned us. It's not the type of place I'd go for a drink after work with colleagues, or ever by myself, but this place can turn into a good time quick with the right group of people. read more

After spending some quality time at Sancho's, we drunkenly wandered into this bar and frankly, were glad we did. After walking west from Sancho's we noticed crossing a street and all of a sudden there were crack heads everywhere. I live in downtown Phoenix, and I'm fairly used to seeing bums and druggies, but this was on another level, it was as if we had stumbled into a zombie movie. I overheard one lady saying to her friend "I didn't wanna kill him, but I had ta'... I just had ta'." We *only* went into this place because it looked like a safe haven. The bartender assured us that we were safe in there and that we should avoid talking to anyone outside and try not to be too drunk if we were walking. We told him we would prefer a taxi at that point, lol. Inside the bar, there were young people talking politics with older alcholics, a veteran alcoholic rolling a joint at the bar, a woman who appeared to be legitimately down's syndrome, and a pimp. Dives are fun every now and then.. actually, they are fun all the time. The Nob really takes the fun dive to a new level. The characters that come in here are a blast. Old dudes with wild stories, rowdy 20-somethings, crazy older women, and more... The jukebox is even a little crazy - it has the ghostbusters them song on it!! Combine this with crazy cheap drinks and bartenders that are quite the characters themselves...you are in for an awesome night. Oh, Nob Hill. You are such a Colfax dive bar. And if you go expecting more, you'll be disappointed. I have spent many a drunken Friday night here...if you make it inside without being slightly harassed by homeless folk on the street, consider it a win. The layout is tough. There is a bar in the middle of the space with some booths throughout. If you have a large group, it's tough. This spot is great for 4ish people. Here's the deal: you can count on stiff drinks at a reasonable price. That said, I was super bummed with my experience last weekend. Yes, it's divey. So I won't fault it on ambiance. But I was there with a huge group for a friend's birthday. And I happened to not be drinking. While everyone else in my group was drinking at least one drink, I went up to get some waters for myself and a friend. To be fair, the bartender told me she'd have to charge me since I wasn't getting any alcohol. I mentioned that everyone I was with was drinking (including my husband who had just bought a round). She said she could only give one water per drink when you were buying. So I was charged for water. TWO BUCKS a glass. Wtf. I get it. You don't go to Nob Hill to drink water. But that's stingy. I did, however, enjoy playing darts. Ask the bartender for the darts, as they aren't left out in the open. Beware that they are not in the best of shape, and we had a heck of a time getting them to stick in the dartboard. Nob Hill, I will be back. I've lived in the neighborhood for over a year now, but always walked by this place, although I'm usually attracted to dive bars. Weird. Anyways, my co-workers wanted to go out for happy hour after work one day, and we decided to come here. WE HAD A BLAST. Eclectic people, great jukebox, heavy drinks, lovely service, and awesome prices. I don't think I've ever met as many people in one day/night of drinking than I did here. Everybody is just so sweet and friendly - I went from having a conversation about flowers and gardening to a conversation about the mysterious S.T.D., "blue waffle" - and, if you don't know what that is, look it up. I'll definitely be back to drink and, hopefully, have some entertaining conversations! My tip: Two-fer happy hour. Sweet locals and great service. Yes, it's cash only (most dive bars in the city are) and yes the patrons are mostly old and hard-drinking (it's your fault if you feel out of place) and yes it's dark and old-fashioned. This is a ridiculously enjoyable dive bar...and by dive bar, I mean really, really, really, really divey bar. I was introduced by my cousin and her husband, who are regulars, as a cheap, comfortable and friendly place with some interesting characters. All of these and more were true. The people there are ridiculously friendly - staff, regulars, everyone. Some of them are a bit sketchy but not in a dangerous way at all. Heck, the place has a cab company on call for some of the regulars and all they do is call up and say "yeah...its Nob Hill...yeah...it's Karen this time...see ya" and a cab pulls up 2 minutes later and whisks them (willingly or not) away. Let me start off by saying that I really like this place. It has character like few other bars I can think of. The paintings are tasteful, there are little bits of stained glass in the windows, and the booths are likely a good place to have an intense conversation. Every time I've been in here, it's been the same bartender, and he's a rock solid character of a bartender and the perfect fit for such a place. It's also not uncommon to get a $2 bill back in change, I doubt that it's coincidence since it's happened to me twice. The bartender or someone must make it a point to give $2 bills as change. And you're pretty much guaranteed a strong drink. But I've been in some hilariously awkward situations with some of the other patrons I've run into here. In just one visit alone, I got felt up by a lady? who was there with her man-friend. Then an older woman invited me to go to another bar with her. I declined, but was amused by the fact she offered to buy me a drink -- at a different bar. Then there was an incident where a guy on crutches crutched in off of Colfax and offered to sell me his Codeine prescription. I declined, and the bouncer recognized right away what was going on. From there I saw an impressive display of crowd control from the bouncer. He put his hand gently on the guy's shoulder, talked to him in a very pleasant voice as he slowly walked toward the door, making sure the guy followed. In summary, this is a great stop if you're on this side of town, but I will be disappointed if you leave without a decent story about your visit. read more

This is a good little dive bar. Like all dive bars, there's very little atmosphere but cheap liquor and beer. This place easily fits that bill. It's right off of Colfax. That should describe about half of this place's clientele. The non-panhandlers, prostitutes, and addicts are really friendly here. Made a few friends at the bar. Most people were really nice but There appears to be some regulars that come every Friday night. They were somehow nice and rude at the same time. One of them asked me how much money I make point blank and then acted baffled when I refused to answer. Another regular was so drunk he could barely speak. He got thrown out when I was there. From context clues, I was able to determine that he gets thrown out almost every night. Oh, Colfax. You're so classy. All in all, good spot and really friendly bartenders. What do you get when you mix your parent's liquor cabinet & the 2nd oldest bar in Denver? NOB HILL INN. This ultra dive bar has got to be one of the best places in Denver. Imagine popping vicodin, drinking a 1/2 bottle of vodka, & a line of coke because that's how much fun you will have here. Seriously, though, the staff is awesome...don't piss them off. The entertainment is great (the drunk Angelina that tried bringing a 40oz. of Old E inside.) The drinks run 3 fingers deep and the jukebox well.....hope you like country. I seriously heart this place and I've only been there once. If your looking for somewhere touristy keep walking, but if you replenish the alcohol level in your blood stream this is for you. read more

This place is where dreams go to die...The clientele can be quite interesting to say the least. Most are very polite but some can still be a bit scary. But, if you belly up to the bar it will be a good time as long as you have an open mind. However, it's a solid stop if and when you are cruising down Colfax on a bar crawl. It's a bit rough when the ATM isn't working as they only accept cash. Pluses include an awesome juke box, very nice staff and an old school charm that you can't find many places these days! The Nob Hill Inn is a DIVE BAR. If you're looking for a reference point to DIVE BARS, this is where you start. The five star rating is specifically for an unapologetic DIVE BAR in the area of Denver on Colfax in the area where you would exactly expect it. Seriously, if you're rating a DIVE BAR, you can't issue any stars at all until you come here. I've been here at least dozens of times in the last five years. During those visits, at least half of my conversations around the bar (it's REALLY good for that) have been with ex-cons (released that day) or black market pot dealers getting their drink on. The bartenders are smart about kicking out blackouts, and serve a smart shot / beer. Get yourself a PB&J (PBR & Jamo) for a cheap tasty buzz. They even have a banner proclaiming their "Best Dive Bar in Denver" status, half falling off (from several years ago) above the entry. It remains the best. There are many, but this one is stumbling distance to my house, therefore it is mine. read more
