This was the first North Face store I had ever seen. That was years ago. Now, they're everywhere. I once wanted one of their puffy coats. Now ever yuppie has one. The unique is now the ordinary. I won't buy one now, but there are plenty of other things. Excellent products and high prices. What keeps this place going, other than trendy products and styles, is the high quality of their products from material to craftsmanship. Yes, something can be fully functional and look good too. I went in today in search of shoes and a travel bag. We were ignored by everyone in the store except Paul, who while walking asked if we were in need of assistance. We were, and for the next 30 or 40 minutes he proceeded to answer our questions and explain all of the things we wanted to see. Yeah, the place can get a little pricey, but they had what we were looking for, so thats all that really matters to me in the long run. We were looking for a bag that would be good to use as carry on for an international flight- he went as far as to wright down all of the bags that would work- their dimensions and name. I recently purchased a think sunning jacket which I'd only worn a few times before the zipper came off it's track. I called and spoke to an associate who asked that I bring it in for a look to determine how they'd handle the exchange. There was a possibility they'd have to send it off for repair through the warranty dept... but the problem was I had a race to run this weekend. NO PROBLEM! I arrived, spoke to a manager who was more than happy to not only exchange it for a floor item (considering my circumstances) but also to help me look through the jackets and make sure that was still the one I wanted! They did not have to do this and I respect procedure, but given that it was new and I needed it they did right by the customer which makes all the difference to me! read more

While I was touring Chicago I came across this store and I was very excited to shop for a new book bag. The associates are great and the establishment and where it's located. But I kept having a worker named of Eric. Tall with glasses . I hated how I couldn't look around in peace with out him showing me and shoving jackets down my face just for a sale. Yes the North Face is expensive... also crowded and lacking a variety of products and sizes.... but they're getting 4 stars for the quality of customer service that Adam provided to me on Saturday afternoon. North Face makes great clothing and this is the biggest brand store I've been to. The selection and sizes are there and the items I purchased from as far back as 2006 are still in great shape. I wasn't really a runner back then but coming from a place with a similar climate, there was a large selection of winter clothing given that it was October when I was there. They have sections dedicated to camping, mountain climbing and other outdoor activities. It may not be the easiest to find exactly what you are looking for but it's easy to know that you're in the right area. One of the staff members was very friendly and knew that I was visiting from Toronto. He suggested I go up to the Hancock Tower for lunch on Tuesday as they have a great deal on a buffet lunch. read more

Yes the logos prominently displayed all over the clothes are annoying. But who the hell cares? Chicago has pretty much the worst weather of any major city short of Alaska and Siberia, and I don't mind paying some money to be comfortable in it. As a consumer, I can say this much about North Face.... very well made products.... from their warm and not so 'puffy' down jackets to backpacks to shoes to winter accessories, they definitely have products that last. The store is nice and their employees are well educated about their products. Even the guy helping me pick a backpack and waterproof shoes did a fabulous job, just wished they carried more larger sizes. If you ever need a guy's shoe that is oh so toasty, never leaves you with soggy socks and made just for the brutal Chicago winter, I strongly recommend the "Storm Peak Clog." Sad face; as my twenty-something colleague likes to say; North Face selection doesn't tend to carry the same things year after year so things I see on folks from a year or two ago are no longer available. The customer service at this store is horrible. You will get a different answer with who you speak to. The manager refused to do a return because it would "hit the store". Full tags on the item, within 30 days, never worn. But purchased online. No one will initiate conversation or if you need help. Coming from the San Francisco Bay Area we knew that we needed to prepare for the extreme cold winters in Chicago. In August when we got here, North Face received the men's business winter coat and hat and we got them immediately. Mid October the boots arrived, we got the top two models that the sales person said it will keep him warm and dry. Also, smart wool socks but their selection is limited. Luckily we bought everything right away because a lot of the stuff is gone now. Their prices can be steep, but if you're going to invest in much needed winter clothes might as well be a warm jacket, socks, boots and hat that will get you through temps in the teens. North Face has durable gear that can take a beating, and never seems to get old. The North Face store don't sell Earmuffs this was a disappointment. Lucky for us we Macy's is the only store in the loop that sells them. read more

Everyone knows how great North Face products are, so I won't bother talking about them. I will, however, highlight the great service I got. I walked in unknowingly about 5 minutes before they closed. Before I knew it, I had been toying with buying a coat in one of two sizes for over a half an hour and trying on other ones. The salespeople were nice and continued to help me long after they were closed. I was embarassed for myself, but incredibly surprised at just how nice they all were. I ended up putting the coat on hold and buying it the next day--everyone was equally nice that day. Thanks for a great experience, North Face! read more

The NF is a company that has steadily been in decline since the early 90's from a technical aspect. They happily bought into the wilderness chic trend, and they became massively profitable because of it. Unfortunately, they have seemingly poured very little profit back into R&D, and to also keep costs down for the financially challenged outdoorsman, like myself. Quality has gone down as they have shifted to China as a manufacturing base. At least the other overpriced 'outfitters' like Patagonia, still manufacture in the Americas, or Thailand. Makes a big difference quality wise. Even with their technical gear, it is only a matter of time before the zipper goes, or stitching starts fraying. Their top tier mountaineering gear is still top notch. Every mountain in the world is populated with their gear. And you will pay through the nose for it. Best to do business with a company like Outdoor Research that manufactures in the USA. You will save coin, and support an amazing outfitter, still dedicated to the sports they represent, and the country they call home. Best thing about the NF is their guarantee, combined with a store front. They will replace or fix everything they sell, but for repairs, it will take many weeks. Aaah yes. The pacific northwest. Where the winters are mild and I can tell the cold wind it ain't shit by bearing my legs, wear hooded sweatshirts and flip flops (quit judging) throughout the winter months. Don't get me wrong- north face had its place in portland's culture cuz we like to do a lot of outdoorsy shit like biking to work, rock climbing, snowboarding, skiing (see we got mountains), hiking, protesting, tree hugging, petting elk, etc.. Despite the lack of mountain fun here-north face has its place in Chicago cuz it's fuckin cold here! Telling the cold wind it ain't shit around here? As if! You're Cwrazy. It means business! snow! *gulp* ice! *double gulp* below freezing temps and cold wind blowing in your face and cabs driving crazily by splashing you from a giant puddle! *triple gulp* Good God it gets cold. I know not right now, for these temperatures are considered "nice" and come towards the end of December is when my face will start stinging and I wish for death upon myself so I can be nice and toasty in hell for all of eternity. Ooooo blazing temps- me likey (actually I prefer fall weather mostly but beggars can't be choosers!) That will be me in a ski mask with dress pants strolling down state street. Anyhow I bought myself a stylin coat here that keeps me warm, covering my bottom AND doesn't make me look like a puffy mashmallow. The place is pretty well organized and the staff is very helpful. Their fleece pullovers are usually warm enough for me rather than wearing a jacket. You see, it's not just a dumb trendy label like Von Dutch. North face is known for quality hence the prices and for warmth! Yay warmth! You Go warmth! Tell off that cold wind! If you like cold I guess you can go get yourself a crappy coat at macy's and the cold wind would give your crappy coat one look and say: Hmmmmmmph BITCH please, I'll freeze your ass off in a second. Todd the store manager here is horrible. After the inside lining on my gloves ripped I took them back to see what could be done. I had only worn them a few times and informed Todd about this. He blatantly said I was lying and was extremely rude. When I asked another employee for his first name she told me she would get in trouble by him if she gave me that. What type of store has managers that train their employees to be in fear of them and to have them work in anonymity? Store is extremely poorly run and do not recommend it at all. read more

Please note that this review is for the service, not the products. The North Face has great products, but awful service. I was looking to purchase a backpack for my mother. Since she had a specific use for it (commuting from the suburbs to the city - not for hiking), I thought I would ask someone for some assistance, to narrow down my options. Asking a cashier "Is there someone familiar with women's backpacks?" He told me, "Yes, what's your question." I told him what I was looking for and he told me "There are different prices and different sizes. It depends what you want from it." That was some pretty unhelpful advice. The whole 90 seconds he was there I wished he wasn't, since it was pretty obvious that he just wanted me to compare tags and figure it out myself. I was hoping he would say something like "A lot of older ladies like item X, since it has this feature.." but he didn't. I even asked about customer recommendations and got a blank stare. To make it clear: I will continue to buy The North Face products, I will just do it at a store elsewhere in the city (like Moosejaw on Clybourn) that has more helpful assistance beyond "read the item tag." read more

5 stars for the clothing. Honestly, I love their clothing and can't stand the fact that I even like it that much. I feel like such a lemming whenever I wear anything North Face. But the stuff holds up really well, look good despite multiple washings, and given that Patagonia stuff is even more pricey and not nearly as stylish (albeit, amazing quality though), I usually turn to North Face for a lot of my travel - though not hardcore trekking/camping - needs. I like to travel a lot - and usually some kind of North Face clothing - be it convertible pants or a moisture-wicking shirt - usually makes it into my suitcase. 1 star for the customer service. I felt so much better when I read the other reviews about the poor customer service. I was beginning to feel intentionally slighted - like maybe all of the sales staff just had a problem with me. Now I know that they just have a problem with anyone who happens to be a paying customer. WTF? I've actually seen sales associates walk away from me when they saw me coming towards them with a question. I don't know why everyone in there looks so depressed. So 3 stars for the average. Anytime I'm in the North Face, I nearly almost walk out because of the horrendous service. But then - almost regretably - I'm drawn back because of the clothes. Damn. read more

The North Face stands behind their product! I sent in my beloved Steep Tech ski jacket in for repair of the zipper and lining. The North Face notified me that the jacket was beyond repair because of the deteriorated lining, but were willing to refund 100% of the purchase price. Keep in mind, my jacket was about 8-years old! I love The Northface products, I have been buying their products for years, ever since I lived in New York. Well today I decided to replace my old Northface bag pack that I've been carrying for years. This bag pack has been with me since Spring of 2008, and I've taking it every where from Jamaica, England, France , and Japan. Now my zipper is broken and I had to replace it, so I did some research online; and decided to visit this particular store. When I entered store we were greeted very nicely and we looked around until we found the backpack section. Long story short we found my new bag and now I'm very happy. read more

I arrived at the store, a true tourist, looking for a backpack. I have never purchased North Face in the past, but, being on vacation, wanted to splurge. I was one a handful of customers in the store. No one approached me, nor said hello. I shopped a bit and bought a backpack based on reviews I found on my phone. The staff were talking to one another. I made the purchase and the clerk did inform me that I could have 25% off any item I could stuff in the backpack. She asked if I wanted my receipt texted or emailed to me. I told her, left, and continued on my vacation. I realized a week later that I never received the receipt. I googled North Face and emailed the customer service. Paula answered me in a short period of time. I informed her of the issue. She told me that I contacted the online store and that I needed to contact store where I made the purchase. I emailed her back about a contact name/number. I never heard from her again. I googled the store number and was connected to John. I informed him of the issue. John resolved the issue and had the receipt to me in under five minutes. He was kind and knowledgeable. It is highly unlikely I will purchase North Face again - the clerks in the store and the online help were disconnected and not customer oriented. John, he would be the only reason I may choose to frequent North Face again. Maybe everyone was having a difficult day, but, it wasn't that they were rude - just - not interested in helping.
