Have been before and the Friday Fish Fry was good. But my most recent visit was very disappointing. For the money, I would have preferred Culvers fish, although obviously the atmosphere is not comparable. My mahi sandwich was fishy and borderline inedible. The haddock was okay. Everything was bland and flat. Even the tater tots. 2 of the 3 of us thought the walleye was unappealing. It very loud but I am okay with this as long as I can hear my guests. Based on other reviews, maybe this was just an off night? But NO excuse for bad mahi. I will return to try other things. The menu looks great, but never again for fish. read more

Surprisingly Good! We have been going here for a few years, but we were there recently for the Friday Fish Fry. The dinner was great! My wife and I enjoyed the Walleye. The portion was huge (you can also request more if you like). The batter was nice and light, the tartar sauce was good as well as the slaw...I loved the truffle fries (definitely upgrade to Truffle Fries when ordering). The service was exceptional and I apologize for forgetting our server's name, but she has been there for 10 years. She was patient taking us through the menu on her likes and what is good. I've been impressed with the menu and the chef's creativity with new dishes and specials. The house Chardonnay was excellent and all their prices are very reasonable for the quality of food, service and ambiance of the room. We love the room with the big windows and high ceilings. It is a fantastic comfortable room to enjoy company and good food. They have a Saturday Steak Night that sounds interesting that we want to go back and try. Kudo's to the culinary and serving staff for a great relaxing evening. It is a must try and great value! read more

I have only been here twice and the first time (weekend late lunch) was good enough to warrant a second visit. I recall having a steak salad that I enjoyed. I made a reservation for a birthday dinner for a Monday night, requesting a table in the dinning room by the windows. Upon arrival it turned out that while they had the reservation they didn't take note to our requested seating. The hostess (a young lady) said she would move some empty tables together to place our party of 5 near our requested area but for some unexplained reason returned and said she was unable to do that. Subsequently we ended up at a table near the bar area, on league night (full at the bar and spilling over into the seating area). It was so loud that you could not hear the person next to you, a phone app said it was 85 db (think subway train passing by). To our surprise they have a limited menu on Mondays and Tuesdays (think sandwiches and a couple apps - no "entrees"), it really would have been nice if we were notified of the reduced menu options when making a (birthday) reservation. Not to mention they didn't have enough menus for our party and we shared. Menus were not the only thing they were short on, they only had 1 wait staff serving indoors and outdoors. With plenty of empty tables I didn't think it would be a problem, but it was. 15 - 20 minutes after being seated the bartender came to check on us and took our drink order (she was very friendly and apologetic). When the drinks arrived the bartender realized the waitress had not stopped by and took our order. The French onion soup was good, as were the pretzel bites but the cheese curds were under-cooked and and served near room temperature. The chicken panini was good, the steak sandwich ordered medium was served more towards rare, the bacon cheese burger came without the bacon and the 1/4 lb hotdog was, well a hotdog - cannot mess that up. This selection was a good representation on what to expect on their Monday / Tuesday menu. I know we wont be returning on a Monday or Tuesday. read more

We've started going to the Oak Terrace Grille again, as the once eliminated menu items are back! The Shrimp and Grits is phenomenal! I can't thank the restaurant and chef enough for reintroducing this favorite! From the feedback of the waitresses, other customers were equally as thrilled. The food continues to impress, including recent Cinco de Mayo dishes, that blew us away for how authentic and tasty the items were added for May 5th. My husband and I went there for a special anniversary celebration in September 2023 and loved it. Hadn't been there in a while and they did not disappoint. The weather was nice enough to sit on their patio - just a few sprinkles, but we had an umbrella over the table. Beautiful view of the golf course. Our server (Ally) was excellent and the food was delicious. My husband had the "porterhouse" pork chop - huge and perfectly cooked! I had one of the best petite filets I've had in a long time - so tender and flavorful. They gave us a free dessert for our anniversary - amazing limoncello shortbread cake with blueberry chambord sauce. Wow! read more

My husband and I came for dinner and had a very pleasant dining experience. The patio tables were socially distanced. We had nice shade under the umbrellas. It was peaceful and quiet. This review is for the 2 pasta dishes we ordered tonight and I'm being extremely generous on the 3 star review. We were a party of 5 and 3 had the fish fry which looked very good. 2 of us had a sorry excuse for the Pasta Bolognese. This was not a Bolognese sauce and the 2 meatballs that accompanied this dish could have been golf balls. So tough and chewy. A lovely setting but do not order a pasta dish here. read more

Went for dinner last night. The food and drinks were fine, however the hygiene practices displayed by the manager, hostess, and a waitress (not the one serving our table, but another one) was completely atrocious. None of them consistently wore their face masks and the manager went around to nearly all the tables without his on - even singing happy birthday with a table. Tables were not properly wiped down or even wiped down at all before new customers came in. It makes me nervous to think of how the hygiene practices in areas not visible to the public are maintained. Unless things drastically change, despite the food being perfectly palatable, I would absolutely recommend AGAINST eating and drinking here. Completely irresponsible staff in a time of a global pandemic. read more

Looking for a special event brunch spot featuring unlimited mimosas/champagne and a buffet? Pick up your jaw and listen up. First, know that you're going to have to get in your car, or find a pal with a car, and drive. For anyone reading this that thinks going further north than Irving Park Rd is too far, you might as well stop now. This is even further than that. The place is easy to find, unless you're incredibly directionally challenged and lack maps or GPS. Once you arrive, the restaurant is located in the golf course's huge clubhouse and there's plenty of parking, even valet service. The building is a large mansion, which is seated on a hill and looks out over the golf course. If you happen to like scenic golf courses, you'll be pleased. If not, remember what I said above about the bubbly. The décor is charming, full of dark woods and a touch of elegance. Classy. On to the eats. From what I gather, Sunday brunch isn't their regular thing. Holidays and other special occasions seem to warrant a spread of this sort. I'm not a huge fan of buffets, mostly because they feature overly produced, low quality food that they can move quickly. This one, however, is a step above that, feeling somewhere in between a big potluck brunch spread at your grandmother's house and a nicer restaurant. The highlights: -Big pans of sausage and bacon that were constantly being filled. -Two tables of desserts with everything from flourless chocolate cake, pies, and cheesecake, to cookies. Yeah, this is where it feels like Grandma's house. -An omelette station with lots of fresh veggies, ham, and the usual suspects. -Raw oysters on the half-shell, boiled shrimp, and a host of other seafood. -Full lox and bagels platter. -Paella. Yup, paella. -Eggs, potatoes, and the typical breakfast stuff. -Lots of pastries and baked goodies. Need I go on? I have only a few complaints about the experience. One is that the buffet was on the second floor and we were seated on the first floor. While we were near some windows with great light and a "view", traversing the stairs with plates full of food was tricky. As you can imagine, after a few mimosas, that might prove to be more *ahem* challenging. The second is that they served crab parts without a crab tool in sight. Was I supposed to crack it open with my champagne flute? Finally, each table is given a two hour limit. Two hours isn't much when you consider having to potentially wait in lines for food, eat, enjoy brunch conversation with your companion(s), and for us, get the little one fed. Tick tock tick tock, kids! I realize lingering in a busy place with people needing to be seated isn't cool, but pulling out the figurative stopwatch is a tad tacky. We had wonderful service and they were really good and accommodating to the little one. That is, except when the Easter Bunny came around and scared the peeps out of him. Overall, $30 is a bit high for the wallet when I know of a handful of places closer to home where I can an equivalent deal, even without the buffet option, and not have a set time limit. However, I'd make the drive again if another occasion came up and the family wanted to go again and I couldn't convince them to stay within the Chicago city limits. For anyone already in the area, give it whirl. read more

I had my wedding here in October 2010. We worked with the Bridal Consultant Laurie and she was great. Everything went really well and any questions or concerns we had, she was easy to reach via email or phone and that helped keep me relaxed for my big day. The venue is perfect for a one location wedding and if you want a location all to yourself, then this is your place too. The upstairs ballroom has low ceilings and has all windows overlooking the golf course, and there is an outdoor balcony with chairs and tables for your guests to use as well. I would recommend this venue to any future Bride and Groom. I also highly recommend having lunch at the Oak Terrace Grille. The food is really good and the service is great! read more

At MakRay Golf course. This has been our go to place this summer due to COVID. A beautiful outdoor patio to eat at. Monday and Tuesday are an abbreviated menu (Avoid these days) Other days they have a great extensive menu, fresh food for lunch and dinner. Fantastic prime rib on weekends, great sandwiches, salmon, burgers, soups, light lunches and large salad selection. I wish they had brewed iced tea. The wine service is a large pour. A real winner for outdoor eating and a large inside restaurant too. Lots of parking. Staff was masked and social distanced. They usually take reservations. read more

Makray Golf Course in Barrington in the winter is often overlooked but is a great place for an evening out. The Oak Grill is a great blend of a country club and a full service restaurant. Susie the bartender, is out going and personable and the drinks are generous. The menu is diverse and if you like mussels, they are outstanding...they can be served as an appetizer or a full meal. We went for the fish fry (all you can eat, of course) and to start with we were seated at a table that was too small for our party. Okay, no reservations so we will manage. The service went downhill from there. It took 25 minutes of trying to flag down our waitress to order, which she sent someone else to do. Once we finally got food we were basically ignored again. No drink refills, or do you need anything. Finally, one person asked for more fish and after another 25 minutes of being ignored we finally got our check and just left. This place is a hidden gem. A restaurant in the club house of a golf course is something most people just drive by, but this one, you should stop in. First, it's in a beautiful building and has the feel of a nice country club. The view of the course from the patio is the best dinning view of any place I have found in the suburbs. The patio on a beautiful day can't be beat. The service is typically good, usually not outstanding. The staff is always friendly. On bad weather, not good for the patio days, I sit at the bar. Staff and beer selection are good. The food is also good, but not exceptional. A wide enough menu selection to please everyone without being too expansive. I have tried 7 or 8 dishes over the past year of coming here and they all were good. I have never had to wait for a table, which I appreciate, even on a weekend night. I went here for lunch today , it wasn't busy by no means but I have to say I had probably the best fried calamari that I have ever had, the nacho's yes nacho's were fabulous , the tortilla soup was delicious and I had a Caesar salad with chicken that was very good other food at the table with no complaints was , the special blacked prime rib sandwich , which they said it was great also the others at the table had the mussels and from what I heard they were awesome I think we found our work lunch spot . read more

The waiter was beyond nonchalant about this in my food and I had to request some retribution from the junior Managment employee whom did not appear to value my business as this will be my last time ever eating here as there approach to simple hygiene and customer retention skills are void ....really you are going to give me a $2.50 discount for serving me hair in my food?? Nice bar pour and the Gin and Tonics are great.The problem with this restaurant is the manager Cindy. 6 of us went this past Saturday night for the Prime Rib special. Waiter advised us they were all out. Ok, so we expected the manager, after our waiter told her of our displeasure, to come to our table and at least acknowledge our dissatisfaction. I finally called her over and told her we were disappointed the special was sold out but understandable. Her response was short and rude, she said " well what do you want me to do ? when it's gone, it's gone." No apology or acknowledgement. So unprofessional. She was busy chatting and waiting hand and foot on another table who appeared to be her friends. Our group not only eats there fairly regularly but also plays golf. The owners would do well to let her go as doing her job seems to be more than she can handle. read more

We go to this restaurant on occasion and it has always been a good experience and we have recommended it. Yesterday we went for dinner for our anniversary and were very disappointed. I got the NY strip steak and she got the filet mignon. Both steaks were terrible. Mine was ordered medium rare and came medium. Hers was ordered medium and came medium rare. Both steaks were very tough and chewy. We actually could not finish them they were so bad so the dogs had a nice meal when we got home. How can a filet be tough, especially for $30. Those 2 steaks cost us $55. We could have gotten much better quality meat at Costco and grilled them better. I'm not sure what happened. This place was really great last time we were there in the spring. It seems they are now using low quality beef. Soups and potato skins were good though. We told the waitress the meat was tough and she said she would tell the chef. Really? I'll bet not. I would have preferred the management talked to us. For the money we spent, I'm not sure I would take another chance. read more
